want to encourage you to schedule the time to talk with your child's teacher, and it is time to develop a relationship with your teachers and work for the betterment of our children. it is also physical awareness month and we want to encourage all of our schools to hold events and teach lessons that promote active living. i am very, very proud to say that i have been invited by roosevelt middle school to run the 5 k with them in may, which i will be doing and i'm training hard for that now. but, we do think that good nutrition and good physical activity is important to good learning. so we want to encourage you and for more information and activities visit the webite at

www.healthy iesf.org. >> okay? also, on thursday, march 7th and this is one of the things that we are so proud of in san francisco. on thursday march 7th, from 5:30 to 7:30, we will be holding our second annual lgbtqt dinner, it is time for the dinners to celebrate the richness that make all of our families special. i will be proudly attending and i look forward to seeing all of our lgbtq families there as well. rsvp is required by march first and you may do so by visiting www.sflgtbqdinner families winner,.event bright.com. just so you know we have fliers in the lobby and have it posted on the website as well. one last item is that on this agenda for the board, it includes four action items

related to preliminary layoff noises to certificate other representative employees and this is necessary by statutory deadline which is march 15th. this year marks the first time since 2007, where we are not facing hundreds, upon hundreds of preliminary layoffs due to anticipated budget cuts to the state of california and i want to thank our community and all of the voters for the passage of prop 30 which is making this possible, and if you do take away those positions lost, due to the anticipated end of the school improvement grand, the sig grand and other categorical funds and other grants that are sunseting, we are issuing over 200 percent fewer, 200 percent fewer prelim layoff notices this year as compared to last year. although this is a significant reduction in layoff notices, it is still a very difficult decision that we take very, very seriously and it is a very
6:21 pm
difficult decision and we do not take that lightly. we still need to make difficult staffing decisions and that will help to bring this into problematic alignment and pers the direction of the board. the staff and human resources will be available in the meeting of all of the considerations that have led to the reduced listing of layoffs which includes our statutory reporting requirements and the loss of grant funds that i have mentionsed and we are also taken into account the programattic shifts to bring it into alignment into the priorities of the district. i also want to say that there are a number of newspaper articles and media reports that say that the financial out look of the district and the state is looking rosier. we continue to be very optimistic about that and as that financial picture does in fact come to fruition, we look forward to bringing back as many or all of our employees as
6:22 pm
we can as the finances improve. with that, i want to say, thank you for your continued support and we look forward to seeing you at the next parent teacher conference. >> thank you, superintendent. >> item c recognition and resolutions of commendation. >> thank you, president norton. i would like to invite dr. brent stevens to the podium to make the first presentation of the rave distinguished serve award. >> thank you, superintendent carranza. it is my happy to present to you robert brecer and he has been nominated for a rave award. he is a former french teacher and taught in minnesota and moved to california to become a teacher and is one of those

rare administrators who comes up through the ranks to become the leader of his own staff at alerado and served as principal for 6 years and during that time he has been instrumental in a number of important pieces of work. that includes leading trainings for staff around supporting english language learners and instrumental in bringing reading partners to the school and he has also been working with the pta to create a support network and a literacy network to support the struggling readers. most recently he has been reading by design to introduce writing strategies to all of the classes. and in my brief stint of work i have had a chance to see his leadership as he has rallied his work during inclusion week and had assembles trying to raise awareness including people with disabilitis in

classrooms and he is also going to be the host in the coming week of the second annual dinner for gay and lesbian familis in san francisco. and we thank him for offering the insight into that and he was the first principals of cohorts for the arts. i was able to see him jam on stage this summer and so it makes me very proud to be able to welcome robert here before you. mr. brecker please come up. but we accept this recognition on her behalf and she has dedicated 20 years of service for our schools and is instrumental in taking care of the nuts and bolts of the day-to-day work related to the pieces that make our library function, smoothly. rochele and michelle have spearheaded the great work that we have been able to do with our school libraries they have provided meaningful professional development opportunities, and direct sight support to 70 teacher lie brae ans through 103 schools in our district. they have led them in the roles as teachers, library program managers, information specialists, site leaders and industrial partners. they are highly esteemed by the teacher librarians and also by

the cross-departmental peers with whom they willingly share their expertise. they are very deserving of this recognition, for providing excellent leadership, guidance and support, to teacher librarians and creating collaboration as we advance the literacy efforts in our district. [ applause ] >> thank you, very much. >> thank you. >> thanks. >> thank you very much. i couldn't have written a better rave than whoever the anonymous co-worker wrote.

for what we hope to do in our department is to support literacy in every school. i also want to really thank people who support us cathy flemming, on a weekly basis and the peace office and daisy, santos on a daily basis and luis on a crisis intervention basis. and pete, the public education enrichment fund has been the driving ford behind the revitalization of every school library and we now have a teacher librarian at every school who teachers literacy and is creating a 21st century library and life-long readers and michelle is going to talk about her program. and happy to work as a part of this team, thanks to the fund, it has helped to create this team. daisy and michelle provide excellent vision and support for our work and teacher librarians work together for every skaout at each school and one big example of the work that we do that has been recently completed is related to the model school library standards that were adopted in california, for the whole state of california in 2010. since then, the teacher librarians in san francisco have met in grade level teams, k5 and 68, to create a library sequence and here it is. and our work continues with the scope and sequence as we create model lessons of the scope and
