>> ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ hello, welcome to meet tour district supervisor we're here with supervisor from district 5 which includes the west ash burger and part of the valley are supervisor is one of the two new supervisors today, we'll talk about the toughest it issues facing the city >> thank you for having me and let's start about where you grew up and what kind of jobs you

had. >> i grew up in the western district and i went to public schools here in the city and ended up at uc davis and started working for the picture mayor's office and worked on treasure i would like and it became the african-american context a place that i participated in the arts of kid and it was really an hour to be able to impact so many lives and i really thoroughly enjoyed that experience. >> why did you choose to live in the city you. >> it's my home it's the place i love the most. i pretty much only lived outside the city when i went to college. i came home on the greyhound

bus. i love san francisco. it's nothing like coming crossing across that bridge and seeing my home. or whether you're on a car just to see the skyline of the city. i can't imagine living anywhere else. i experienced a lot of

african-american center how does that prepare you for the board of supervisors. >> i served on the regency agency and the fire commission. i was fortunate to run a non-profit and working for the city. responding to constituents.

doing the kind of things to make our city better. i don't see a better preparation for being a city supervisor. the non profit world is a challenging community because of the need for the great programs. i want to advocate to work with city departments. the list goes on and on. so over the years i've made some important partnerships who have made me be the leader i am. all that entails really helped me as my roll in supervisor. well, the district 5 was an especially event. >> what did you learn?

>> i learned we have an incredible district of people who can see what's genuine and who has a heart for the community. regardless of are personalities or whatever people know when you really care and i think that came across in any captain. i learned to respect the voters and how they feel about the candidates i want to make sure their given the options. and that once the election is over we move on. >> where you do you place yourself on the political spectrum. that's a challenging question

throughout the caption that divides our city. clearly when you have a desire to serve i have a different way to go about doing that. i don't necessarily see myself in one category. i have different feelings about things growing up in the city. so my commitment to san francisco trumpets any ideologue i might have. i have to make sure that i am responsible for my decisions. what did you feel are the biggest issues facing san francisco. in particular my priority t is public housing. it's a neglected community is a

problem. the fact they're still he dealing with rodent problems. this a wealthy city but why are those social services not changing lives. i want to work with the folks and not to be priced out of the city as a result. the other issue is connecting folks to job employment opportunities. employment that gives people pride. everyone wants to take care of their family and sealed people are pushed into a life of crime because that's the easy route to obtaining money. it was really easy for me to sell drugs as a kid.

it wasn't easy for me to get a job because i didn't have works of family members. for me, i just felt like drugs is easier. you can go out on the corner but lucky because of the mayors training program i worked at the school and because of that opportunity i'm here today. and i think we need to make those opportunities readily available for others >> i worked on say development commission for 5 years now, it's been eliminated do you think that the board of supervisors and a at the mayor is doing enough to serve the city's housing needs? >> well, there's still a lot of folks that are homeless. but san francisco is leading the

way to help change things for the better. the housing trust you fund is in the right direction. i think that the fact that san francisco is so commented to affordable housing we had resources to invest in the city but we're going to look at revavmg housing. we're looking at private, public housing. san francisco is leading the way and could we do enough, you know, we're not doing enough until everyone has a clean respectable place to live >> and oftentimes district and city issues are not the same. what you think about that >> the challenges of

homelessness, folks that are in the upper hate community you making sure we're providing resources to this population more aggressively than we have and cracking down on folks who are breaking the law and making it challenging for folks in the community. making sure we're activating that area. i think that's a huge challenge. the one i dealt with before i gave him supervisor is the access to job opportunities and how do we prepare he folks who have never worked in their whole lives what does it mean to not talk about to your boss. we have done as a city we've focused too much on the local

higher which are all great programs but the part that's missing is how do we keep people employed. what does the long term job turn out in san francisco look like. those are the most pressing issues >> the city just recently enacted a two year budget and it seems like the city is looking at whether or not to raise taxes. >> well fortunately i've been in the non-profit world and i know the programs that are actually effective in serving residents. i understand what the need is and i just want to make sure i'm paying attention to the detail knowing what the programs provided and the waste fill

spending is and how we can cut back to be sure we're funding the programs and the departments that need the money the most. i know i have a challenging job ahead of me but fortunately, there are other supervisors that have first-hand experience. it's going to be a tough budget process but looking at everything whether it be site visits to the program or digging deep into the number of other things. it's going to take you mentione.

we caught muni when i was growing up in the city that's how you got around. there were real problems the buses were dirty there was loopholes some exchanges and we need to look at all modes of

transportation and how we allow people to move around the city safely. and part of that is making sure that muni is running well. and we have come very close to securing revenue for the train as well as looking at express options and looking at express trains and other alternatives to make sure we're moving people around so they feel comfortable. i think everyone in the city is a perpetrated to bike and ride share but we have to make it a lot more convenient for people. we're bringing more folks into the city but we are not

increasing the mode of transportation and transportation so we're going to have to take a hard look at our priorities around transportation and really aggressively dealing with that >> and what do you hear about crime in your district and are you happy about what the police department is doing and a well fortunately because of the academy classes we've got additional officers in district 5. it's had a big impact on the district. we are way past the point of where we used to be and that's a place where homicides were happening daily and weekly. sealed we've lost a lot of young people not only to that sort of violence but to the crime

system. now we're dealing with iphone thefts and other things like home invasions. i think with the additional police officers and also with the foot patrols and some of the things that are happening in the lower hate it's more of a did he that really helps to change the environment overall. we have issues of crime just like any other part of the city. i'm happy it's not what it used to be. we have to do more and look at it programs like sf 8 to get folks to take care of themselves and other. we have to provide opportunity

to the folks who commit those crimes but we have to provide opportunities for those folks >> you mentioned how will you deal with the folks who hang out on hate street and homelessness. >> it's a citywide issue we have to work together. just like public safety. you don't fix is and move on. san francisco is an attractive place in general we're going to get folks from all over and we have to make sure that the public agencies that provided homes for those people that their held accountable to be out there and talk to the folks who need the services. and we have sealed an increase

in crime as a result of the homeless population. park station has been relatively and

issue and on ongoing issue one that i'm committed to working with the mayor's office to help manage >> what are. >> thoughts on the economic policies. >> i think that unfortunately, it allows the rich to get richer and it doesn't have a place for the middle class and the poor. i think we have to do when people are interested in economic development opportunities they need to be part of the community it's not just about giving out turkeys. it's about what kind of

opportunities are we going to have how are we going to impact lives. this is a great way to look at it. we have to do a better job >> let's talk a little bit about the city's sports are you supportive for the warrior stadium? >> i'm for a plan that includes the residents of this city. specifically with the warriors stadium it would be a great opportunity for san francisco but i want to make sure that in the agreement that people are not just employed for construction their employed for professional opportunities with the warriors team. they're a whole different type

of team and who are they going after. who are the people who are long-term working with the stashlt. i'm more interested in the long term. we're not just going to build a stadium and everything. how are folks connected to the opportunity >> to what degree should the city subsidize the team. >> i don't see the city subsidizing the team other than the land. eventually maybe not the entire amount but no plans for the city to give up anything other than

potentially the land that wasn't going to be used in the first place but i appreciate their focusing on private fundraising. i don't think the city with the situation we're in now we shouldn't be investing in that. i'm happy the warriors are stepping up >> it's an exciting change. >> yeah. >> well, we're almost out of time are there any other issues that you plan to concentrate on? >> i think one of the things i really want to concentrate on is to make sure we're collaborating more because as a city we're engrossing and resources are being stretched. it's important that city departments collaborate. we are not in just our own

san francisco we're the largest armenian food festival and widely recognized as one of the best food festivals in the area. we have vendors that come up from fresno, from los angeles showing off their craft. we really feel like we have something for everyone in the neighborhood and that's really what it is, is drawing people to see a little bit of our culture and experience what we experience weekend in and weekend out. >> we are behind the scenes now watching the chef at work preparing some delicious armenian kabob. this is a staple in armenian cooking, is that right? >> absolutely, since the beginning of time. our soldiers used to skewer it on the swords. we have a combination of beef and lam and parsley. and every september over 2000 pounds of meat being cooked in three days. >> after all that savory protein, i was ready to check out the fresh veggie options.

>> this is armenian cheat sheet. it's tomatos and mint and olive oil. that makes summer food. and what i'm doing is i'm putting some nutmeg. it is kind of like cream cheese. in armenia when they offer you food, you have to eat it. they would welcome you and food is very important for them. >> in every armenian community we feel like we're a "smallville"age and they come together to put on something like this. what i find really interesting about san francisco is the blends of armenia that come together. once they are here, the way people work together at any age, including our grandmothers, our grandfathers, skewering the meat, it's fun to see. fun to see everybody get together. >> we call it subarek. it's a cheese turn over if you want. we make the dough from scratch. we boil it like you do for la san i can't.

>> the amount of love and karin fused in these foods is tremendous. they come in every day to prepare, cook and bake bread, all in preparation for this big festival. >> nobody says no. when you come them, they have to come tomorrow for the feast. >> what a treat it is to taste a delicious recipe, all made from scratch and passed down through generations. it really makes you appreciate the little things. >> it's one of the best festivals. it's outstanding, a marvelous occasion. >> we're outside checking some of the food to go options. i grabbed myself a ka bob sandwich, all kinds of herbs and spices. i'm going to taste this. looking fantastic. one of the best i've had in a long time. you know it's delicious b i have just enough room for dessert, my favorite part. we're behind the scenes right now watching how all the pastries get made. and we've got a whole array of

pastries here. honey and nuts and cinnamon, all kinds of great ingredients. this is amazing. here's another yummy pastry made with filo dough. oh, my god. really sweet and similar, it's lighter. this is what i like. we have a lovely row here. looks like a very delicious and exciting surprise. i'm going to bite into it. here we go. um. this is great with armenian coffee. now we're making some incredible armenian coffee. >> we buy our coffee, they have the best coffee. they come from armenia,
