much, supervisor, always a pleasure to work with you as well. all of you, friends, spouses, family, people who are just enthralled with this wonderful great city of san francisco like i am. thank you for all being here to witness and honor and thank the people who are stepping up with us to help manage this wonderful great city. thank you, chief hayes white, for being here as well, and other department heads and other commissioners, thank you for joining us as well. we have 25 individuals today who are sacrificing a lot of personal time, sacrificing their own family's time away for night meetings, a lot of reading of paperwork, a lot of public engagement. we also have some 15 different bodies that you'll be appointed to today.

and, so, it is my pleasure to welcome you and to suggest to you that i personally appreciate citizens of san francisco stepping forward to help us manage this city. it never is ever about one office. it's not even about two offices. it's about how we conduct ourselves to reach out, engage people in the public to help serve our city. your ideas, your engagement with us, you're aligning where we want to go to make the city a greater city is really the essence of managing a city. and i've learned that in many, many years of being a public serve ant, being an advocate to make sure the city represented its own diversity, of using that diversity as our strength, and going forward each of you are being asked to serve on extremely important commissions and bodies that i fully, fully

respect. from fire, to transportation, to people handling billions of dollars in retirement, to our arts, to our health, to just getting permits out so that we can help people be success in this city. all of you are part of that. i just happened to address several hundred people this morning at a breakfast to talk about the health of our city. and part of that discussion was not just the health care programs that the country is heading into. it's also health means are we doing everything right for people? are we building strong communities? are we building neighborhoods? are we giving people the foundation in which they can invest to create a family, that they can have hope for their kids? all of you are part of that agenda, and every decision that you make and the people that come before you want to feel

the hope and the foundation that this city has. and, so, i want to thank you, each and every one of you, in your various capacities that you will take on, that you help us be a better city, be a more compassionate city, a city that will help me build more affordable housing, create more jobs, sustain the job situation that we have, to make it ultimately a city of hope for everyone. that is why we emanate our name of the city of st. francis. we have to be of hope to everybody. not just in america any more. we're a city of immigrants as well. so, your commissions also have to have a viewpoint that we are a world class city and we are a city that everybody, the whole world looks at to establish what are good economics, what is fairness and equity, and what is excitingly ip ~

thank you, everybody, for being here. >> everyone deserves a bank account. in san francisco, anyone can have a bank account, things to an innovative program, bank on s.f. >> everyone is welcome, even if you are not a citizen or have bad credit to qualify for a bank account is simple. just live or work in san francisco and have a form of id. >> we started bank on s.f. six

years ago to reach out to folks in the city who do not have a bank account. we wanted to make sure they know they have options which should be more low-cost, more successful to them and using chat catchers. >> check cashing stores can be found all over the city, but they're convenient locations come with a hidden price. >> these are big. >> i remember coming in to collect -- charged a fee to collect a monogram. >> people who use check catchers, particularly those who use them to cash their paychecks all year long, they can pay hundreds, even a thousand dollars a year just in fees to get access to their pay. >> i do not have that kind of money. >> i would not have to pay it if i had a bank account. >> bank accounts are essential.

they keep your money saved and that helps save for the future. most banks require information that may limit its pool of qualified applicants. encouraging to turn to costly and unsafe check captures. >> i do not feel safe carrying the money order that i get home. >> without a bank account, you are more vulnerable to loss, robbery, or theft. thankfully, the program was designed to meet the needs of every kind, so qualifying for a bank account is no longer a problem. even if you have had problems with an account in the past, have never had an account, or are not a u.s. citizen, bank on s.f. makes it easy for you to have an account. >> many people do not have a bank account because they might be in the check system, which means they had an account in the past but had problems managing it and it was closed. that gives them no option but to go to a cash -- check catcher

for up to seven years. you want to give these people second chance. >> to find account best for you, follow these three easy steps. first, find a participating bank or credit union. call 211 or call one of our partner banks or credit unions and ask about the bank on s.f. account. both -- most bridges will have a sign in their window. second, ask about opening an account through bank on s.f.. a financial partner will guide you through this process and connect you with the account that is best for you. third, bring some form of identification. the california id, for an id, or your passport is fine. >> now you have open your account. simple? that is exactly why it was designed. you can access your account online, set up direct deposit, and make transfers. it is a real bank account.

>> it is very exciting. we see people opening up second accounts. a lot of these people never had account before. people who have problems with bank accounts, people without two ids, no minimum deposit. we are excited to have these people. >> it has been a great partnership with bank on s.f. because we are able to offer checking, savings, minimarkets, certificates, and loans to people who might not be about to get accounts anywhere else. even if you have had a previous account at another financial institutions, we can still open an account for you, so you do not need to go to a check cashing place, which may turn to two percent of your monthly income. >> you can enroll in free educational services online. just as it -- visit sfsmartmoney.org.

thank you for coming out today on this beautiful summer san francisco morning. it's a little windy so bear with us. i'm with the s fm t a. i'm so excited to have you here, to have these folks behind me here but most of all to have these vehicles here. as i think about why we are so excited to have these new vehicles hitting the streets of san francisco. the first new vehicles to hit the streets in six or seven years. it's not just that our riders will have a smoother nicer ride on vehicles that are cleaner and neater and easier to

access. it's not just for the operators and the mechanics that will have vehicles that are easier to maintain, it's not just for the agencies to have increased security in the buses and better features from everything from the fuel to the light bulbs, what it's really about is when munis is working well, munis is such and important part of the city's economy that all city of san francisco benefits. all of the people who ride these buses are really benefitting everybody because they are not out on their own vehicles in the road causing pollution and congestion. they are getting around san francisco in the cleanest way possible and really contributing to what

makes the economy strong. we are super excited about these vehicles for us and for our operators and mechanics and they are really a great benefit for all san francisco. i want to acknowledge some people. i have been a member of my board of directors, my bosses, chairman to director jerry lee, ramos, i don't know if anybody else is here. mohammed the director of public works and we are going to hear a little bit about how these buses are part of the public space. just like these are clean, we want to keep these clean. the buses here from input, from our operators, transit workers union local 258. the san francisco transit riders union.

the mta advisory committee. a lot of folks working together, our fleet engineers, mechanics, supervisors, operators, most of whom are under the leadership of john who has been the driving force of getting these here. the one person who was so excited about this is our mayor. he kept saying when are we going to get to ride those buses? i'm happy to say this day is here. i would like to introduce you're san francisco mayor,ed lee. [ applause ] >> thank you. some of them have arrived and all of them will

arrive by july. i want to thank the commission and ed riis skin and the staff for investing properly. this is what we talked about for a number of years. when you realize that many of the buses that we have are over 13 years old in the city and you realize on how not only how run down they are but we keep replacing the parts over again. we have learned the lessons of fuel economy, of ergonomics and designs and free coating on there and material that won't absorb the moisture that sometimes is spilled on there. these are going to be great vehicles, not only for the drivers to drive through our cities safely and for

customers for residents who need a more modern fleet of vehicles to serve them as we attract more customers. this is where the economy has picked up and certainly the financial situation from munis is improving as they make more investments. these are the proper investments to do. they are cleaner and hydro electric. we are using the money responsibly matched up with local monies. these are great investment. this is just the beginning. these bids take a long time, the manufactures take a long time in delivering these buses. but we'll see in the near future, the replacement of some 60 trolley cars that will bring street cars into the similar level of standard that we want. we are

reif refurbishing as we speak. you see not only a modern aspect to them. you see the bike racks in front because munis is about multi-ways of transportation. it not just stopping at destination to other destination. they can take other forms of transportation. these vehicles have arrived in a timely way. we have major events that will bring thousands more people into our city whether they are going to the concerts in our golden gate park or they are going to america's cup beginning next month all the way through september -- or they are making game day trips to the park. this will get people all around the city where they need to be and e
