of behaviors and rather than saying we're criminalizing you and the think language is also important and i want to thank you for bringing up that point. it's something that i really advocate for and our caution to use zero tolerance and exclusionary discipline policies and also i teach teachers at san jose state and hundred students who are future teachers. >> can they do a projector? >> no. my teacher did, but again using social media, integrating all of the areas is so important for the prevention. thank you for that focus too and i think that gentleman has comments. >> i was going to follow up in the conversation with digital media or literacy needed within the educational system. we are still experiencing digital divide and access and just the one you speak of recently

officer when you mention the generations and investigators not engaged with this media and no don't know my book or face space and when you have to look at youth culture. we talk about texting and sexing and omg and i didn't text anything to you. i spoke to and part of the language and how they engage so until we look at the culture of young people and how do we impact today's 20th century media culture we can't make a huge impact in regards to bullying or electronic aggression or whatever name we want to place on it and is affecting the students and i am excited you're addressing this issue and it's a crucial time for this generation and if we don't take serious this

conversation today and action tomorrow we will see more and more issues arise. [applause] >> and i'm going to cap it up and i totally agree with that and one of the resources i want you to point is out is the family institute on line and platform for good a couple days ago. anne was there for the launch in dc and the goal of this whole thing is connect parents, educators and teens together to talk about both the eat your peas and how you stay a digital citizen and do the whole thing and i encourage everybody to check that out and i think that's the type of resource that will get us to where we need to go. it's called a "platform for good .org" and part of the

family institute. >> yay. i think that's the way to cap it off really. let's lose the fear. let's bring -- it's safety, risk prevention, online risk prevention, whatever you want to call is is not the goal. it's important but not the goal. it's the mean to the end and the end is full safe effective successful engagement in participatory media and culture and society. this is a participatory medium that we're talking about in a network world. we're are in this environment and network participatory environment and our students need the tools. they need social emotional learning is a key tool and technical and literacy and media is behavioral so this has just been a fantastic day. thanks

strands theatre (clapping) this is i've been dreaming about this for 20 years and it's to incredibly tlifrl it's fm happen p were on central mark we've got government on two side and an incredibly rich neighborhood filled with defy ideas and we hope to be part of the amazing dialog. we're next door to our custom shop and it was the incubator ofor neighborhood. we have been know eleanor. when they arrived from san francisco we looked at where we're here and with the help of

terry shulman we turned this into a community based on art space. we've welcome dozens of groups into the community to share that space with us. we'll have argue teacher training here and accessible programs and we realized that market street is happening. it's important that arts groups as we also do take the lead in creating civic discourse. we're going to begin build open it. in this space we've got the supermarket orange will a new theatre and front of the of that it will be a 2 hundred seat black box theatre and a double story lobby. great coffee we promised.

to really welcome the neighborhood and to light up this block. part of what gives me joy is expanded the story of kc e t. this city helped us donors and trustees people that work here and they helped to rebuild gary and we knew that c e t are here. a lot of the students raise your hand. the merge theatre folks standing here we've got educational proomz programs. we're deeply involved with this neighborhood and we incubate a

lot of newark. it's such a beautiful cathedral of a spates. in the another way for us to partner with the community. this this space we hope to produce newark and engage new and local and old after the. we hope to share this space. in the a neighborhood filled with arts. a lessons king and luggage store. we're privileged to be part of this community. we look across the street to the museum. thank you for being here today. we know we've got the art community here and scott wiener is a big supporter. thank you scott. it's been an amazing journey. we'll see a rich array ray the

to market street to advance k c e t for new works in collaboration of after the fits with the possibilities of the central corridor. arts transforms neighborhoods especially at night. in the case of k c e t and our master students brings tremendous energy through this door. ac ta inefficient taken the lead in market street focusing on smaller arts organizations. mayor lee our support and enthusiasm is sincere and it makes you a nature leader of

this awesome city (clapping) >> having been under no circumstances on the ac t board with 10 years i can speak with authority about caring kari. in this fast lane makes her mind race faster. i'm honored now in my captain of chair of the capital campaign to nouns some fun stuff it's 32 1/2 millions and we've received many million dollars in new tax credits we've raised $10 million in private contributions to date from our mayors board and a if i other good friends of ac t.

congratulations. i've just been allotted a tour with s o m and plant organizations to take a at the theatre. let me tell you it is transform active for this corridor. i know how hard supervisor wiener and kim and mark leno when we all had been thinking about how to reinvest in this whole life corridor on market street. we were waiting for moments like this. to truly signal a big transformation change along market street and k c e t strand is wonderful you'll see the 3 hundred seats in the theatre and wonder why didn't we do this

long time ago. i've often said market street is a big priority but i have to tell you the truth it wasn't twitter it began with arts grassroots organizations taking the risks the costume shop and others joined supervisor that kim and i and said can you take the risk first and a attract some of the small businesses. they went about it when twitter and is an desk and other wonderful companies that are located here now were then ref the compliment. we talk about technology in the city. technology can't live without of the arts and the vice versa. and our kids are learning that that's why we teach arts and

math and i came back from new york and they're jealous. i have to say they're jealous because they see and hear the vibratecy in our city and when he host the u.s. conventions of mayors i want them to feel the vibratecy of the theatre. i believe that every company that exist in the city of san francisco b would love to have their name associated with this theatre. this will be the kind of theatre you'll want to have it's in the middle of the life corridor of our city that's it that's where things are happening. by the way, it's not just in the daylight but and you see this

all happening but we're bringing vibrant night life back to san francisco lead by k c e t strand and with all the technology companies that are locating along market street. i can showcase something that's going to be well received by everybody. theatre has been part of my life a long time. i know for leno and kim and supervisor wiener perhaps we can do something like that political theatre here (laughter) what do i think. what was their little envisioning thing. in college i did drama and little plays and - (laughter)

that's why i of those a bureaucrat for years. look it up butterflies are free. that's what i thought about when i came up open stage. i would be proud of any great city like san francisco to display this to talk about why we're able to get this together and talk about the history of effort that's gone on. thirty years of investment on market street 83 and now we're at that time, people want to invest in the cultural life. without that culture of san francisco and the arts i don't think the technology workers would want to be here by a theirs attracted atkins and the talent is attracted to places

potential of dramatic story telling and as we break ground today that's dramatic story telling in real time it's all about tomorrow. and tomorrow our kids and students because this is going to be a bit an educational institution it's not just about performance art this is going to bring opportunity for kids who wouldn't have it interest every study and every report we have clearly recognize that students who study art and music and dramatic arts they test higher in math and reading and science and they have lower rates of dropping out of school. a child who quits school before congratulation has an easier way

i was looking for our office had been working beside ac t to realize this project. we've played a small role to realize this vision. the theatre has been in many parts the city but has an important history in mid-market. keri said it two years ago this project seemed out of the worst now it seems obvious. as our ac t board president said. when the mayor came in and i was elected to office we talked about what it would money mean to revitality market street. i realize that policy are a leap of faith you put a policy out there you pass it and sign it by

you need private actors to come and participated in the vision and a process. we're lucky so many people have said they want to be part of that vision to do that and ac t was one of the first. they deserve a round of applause (clapping) >> truly, truly for believing in this very early on. the strand has been a colorful piece of mid market. it's surprisingly he many people come down this block and never saw it but no more. thanks to the office for parallel to preserve the soul of building this community. and we also want to recognize

and we'll be joining a lot of other arts organizations the lodge store gallery and want 59 market we'll enjoy an hour here to bring another arts center to mildred mid market. i always want to realize ellen the arts director (clapping) >> again keri parallel who signed off on this million dollars campaign. and again local builders and this gentleman who's mural has been put here. and i want to thank the group that put together a movie to the

daytime. it's a dynamic space set where the stairs and balconies and large projector room are the screen backdrop. it can protect images and is a reminded of the old market screen. it severs as is making make can he. the imagine on the screen will be transformed to the character of the building through those large windows. the strand theatre represents a renewal once vitality part of the city and one of the san francisco's great cultural neighborhood. it's an honor to work with the inspiring people at k c e t as well as
