in education and health care and in the environment for future generation. mayor ed lee began his career as a civil rights attorney he later served as a director of the human rights commission fighting for people then as director of the public works and later as city administrator now as mayor of san francisco he continues to fight by implementing services that help our most vulnerable community. i'd like to welcome to the stage the houshlg may have san francisco mayor ed lee. well, this is tonight i'm excited to be here it's an honor to be here to celebrate the ninth american heritage indian month no san francisco celebration of the awards. i wanted to thank not that all of you are here but for k q e d for the sponsoring of local heros. this is important because your city is all about diversity and i want to make sure that everybody can live here and be here and have good jobs and education and if they go out to the military they'll come back and give go opportunities for them. i have a special guest someone i met this afternoon but represents sacrifice in the face of a lot of changes.

if you, you know, what's happening in the midwest you'll know what's happening no south dakota. this gentleman came all the way to celebrate with us tonight perhaps we can exchange lessons leeshd how to support community. i want to welcome state representative kevin keller from the 27 district. he's here somewhere (clapping) but he'll be joining us tonight. i know he'll be very proud of our community as we conduct this celebration. well, this celebration is in san francisco because we're a city that breaths and exists and works on sdpift we not only celebrate but incorporate it in everything we do. i know a good part of it is the good work myself and the board of supervisors you working to

make sure this economy is strong and can take care of more people. i remember the days when all the talk was about lay offs and no programs for funding and good times getting cut here and there and people's employment getting cut. today there's a lot more resources to work with and that's why we use this opportunity to invest in job skills. you know when people come back from the military has from afghanistan and iraq they go to an affordable place to get educated. well, the most affordable that the city college that's why we're working hard to make sure they get saved they're not going under because of the past economy city college will be saved for everybody i assure i have that. that's where a lot of our veterans end up.

their smart enough to be at berkley and stanford but they got that from come back from the military we've got to help this them so city college is there for them. we're viflt in historic things in our public schools and it's where it is for a lot of people in san francisco. that's why i adapted the middle schools to give them the technology and wifi on campus or tablet for the kids or training for the teachers or engagement for the parents. this year our city is historically viflt in public schools to the tune of $50 million on top of what the state provides for them. we have an additional $25 million in universal pre k

programs to help our public school kids survive and props in mid-school through high school. because of additional resources i'm working with the business community. you know, this year i asked that we create 6 thousand summer jobs for our kids who all live in san francisco from all walks of life. guess what, we accomplished this summer 6 thousand 8 hundred jobs for our kids. that's a millstone. a millstone (clapping.) and tonight we get to honor and celebrate some people who are doing extraordinarily things not only on behalf of the american neighborhood communities but you're going to find some great personalities and characteristic and commitment like vernon cloud

who is doing health care or orlando who is from the nah how nation working on housing. on a entity that i got to build this affordable housing in the mission area with bridget who comes from new mexico but is working with the california university to help with mentoring of our students. yes (clapping.) give her a big applause. for bonnie hartley who emanates from the missouri heck nation she's n.y. a health center in oakland. their proud and strong people working to strengthen our communities. and they decipher the honor go tonight so with those strong leaders we have a lot to celebrate.
