and having you know where with all to actually believe that i can do this work and teaspoon to do it no matter what. when i walk into a pow-wow or community event i know them and they know me and it feels good. i remember is time i didn't know anybody and it can be lonely. so i feel like community are your friends and family for real. for my thoughtful husband and the sirens for the beautiful songs and the dancers it's so special to be here. i feel spur honored to be here and face you all today. i thank you from the bottom of my heart for honoring me today particularly during american heritage indian month. along with my fellow recipients bonding many and a orlando and vernon thank you for this wonderful local heros award ballot. i struggle to accept recognition and bring attention to a myself but it feels pretty darn special to be here fasting you. many of you all of you are my

heros i look at you to continue the work. i first came to the bay area around 20 years ago as a student. and didn't know anyone and if it wasn't for individuals welcoming me into the community individuals like a long-term community member i can't fail to thank for so much in my life millie. for those of you who remember her, she introduced me to earl so millie has been cup i do. i want to take a moment to acknowledge mike pueblo ancestors my relatives who

inspire me and give me strength and purpose. everything i do for the for my son, my grandson and my granddaughter whose on the way. i'm superfluous grateful for the opportunity i've received here in the san francisco bay area to be able to give back and for the relationships i'd be able to form with native american students and their families and the friends that i've made here. i feel the creator has blessed me in the bay area with this opportunity. blessed me with may husband who's also been here for me, i wouldn't be standing here without earl's support. earl taught me how to fight and love i thank you earl for that.

i'm thankful for all of my friends who i consider family here. my facebook friends who couldn't be here today but integrates me on line and thank you to my twitter folks who express their appreciation i am appreciative so thanks very much. >> and that's 18 years she's been at uc berkley. go bears.

helen and the society house right here in san francisco, california. >> good evening, everybody. we just i'm helen. i have i want to let you know we've 14rb9d 50 years of the american indian people last month i'm really proud of that (clapping) >> i'm very honored and happy to introduce someone that's special. in the community as well as the staff. and a family. orlando has been one of the very special persons in all of our families life. been working with the friendship

house. the friendship house association of american indians serves a broad range of services to the american indian people for 50 i can say now a for over 50 years isn't that wonderful. we continue to work with the young people, people with addiction problems and every kind of problem we try to sought so friendship how is it the r is the oldest peer in the area to continue services and all that. orlando who is the staff for the friendship house for 19 years he's been executive director for at least 5 years. he's got tremendous experience as a clinical director say

manager and speaker she's shown his leadership so far as we can see we like to see folks like i am had that are going to step up and that's one thing i encourage people to do don't be afraid to step up and do things you want to do and certainly orlando has been one of those people we're proud to have him in our agency not only as an agency person but as a relative and a husband and a grandfather and our son-in-law. we're proud of that, too. he's part of a very special part of our family and i wanted to go ahead and see his bio video.

>> ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ many years of singing and come to the programs and come to our next event and seeing the generations at different avenues whether it's educational goals whether it's them receiving long-term housing or whether they're getting healthier i see the next generation of children and grandchildren going ton to their future and having that leads to childcare and providing a solid foundation not only for the peers but for the community as well. and providing family support. it's been collaborative community members it doesn't just take one organization to

heal a community but the whole community at large to provide quality services and help the healing in this community. medical examiner indians we're born about how far and sacred it's all the influences that help us. and all we're doing it rekindling that national state my having them flush at their full potential and this community is on its way for you san francisco sustaining but for strong core values and a strong knowledge and strong kinship our future leaders. (clapping.) >> thank you helen and thank you for that wonderful introduction. good evening. welcome tonight and thanks for coming tonight. i'm orlando. i couldn't get the log findings of the unsung hero but i'm not unsung or neither a hero to me, i'm more local and a little bit crazy some people think. i'm really appreciative of receiving the award and a humble in accepting that. there's a lot of recipients in the past 9 years that received this award that it's powerful to be amongst those people and, of course, moopth our peers it's great to see vernon visit and also bonding many. i'm in great company and i

appreciate that. i want to first acknowledge some of our board of directors bonding many and bob bailey and i think eddy is in the crowd somewhere i thank you guys for coming. you know, people i want to really thank in my prospective of the true heros i admire are the war veterans. this is vernts day and if someone is out there with a veteran shake their hands and they helped to protect our froemz and land. so i express any appreciation to the veterans that they're my

true heros. two of my uncles passed away he and they were veterans so they passed away and let's give them a round of applause. and let's give did you unsung heros the singers and dancers sometimes, we forgot about them too. their commitment and dedication of loerp the songs and the sdaurngz it takes time for them to put that total and for them to showcase their talent it appropriate for ardent month. i want to thank the elderly thank you for showing up and supporting us you're my heros as well as so let's give the elderly in the room a round of applause.

and also marty and a helen are my heros spearheading a lot of leadership many the area they set the pinnacle and i try to live up to that. i want to thank my one of karen and my daughter for dancing they're my backbone they keep me alive and keep me honest. i love for that karen and my children. i want to thank my grandson luke and my 2k3wr5u7bd daughters both of them. and thank my family as well. so thank you so much. (clapping.) and i think my expansion and violation that derivatives me to work when i love something you

really love speaking on behalf of other people i have to be the conferring of the people in the room and the aluminums that have graduated they're my true expiration and heros so let's give them a round of probable cause tonight (clapping) i'm also a graduate of the program i've got about 20 years clean and sober (clapping) so when i thank the clients and a graduates that come through the doors so i know some of the struggles they go through because i went through the doors i see the clients get well, i hear the stories when they come back from they're outings they

can feel the aura of sobriety. and the negative energy out in the city they can subtle their friendship clients when they do their daily actions. that's what i'm about is supporting those folks in the friendship house. that's what we need. this room is full of talented heros and once you start communicating together we can bridge that into the next generation for the children and grandchildren in the room. i thank you and appreciate being nominated and thank you for coming out.
