1:39 pm
hello, can you find yourself a seat please? can you stand by the door? please state your name. you have two minutes. >> i am the engineer. i have been working for more than 50 years. i was the evaluator for those that could return in 1989. i had first time knowledge of the proprietors of jelly's, and
1:40 pm
i want to share two events. in 1989, the port was threatening them, and they needed to do something at their expense to make the building safe. we did investigate. the building was safe. we issued a report, and they admitted the reason there was pressure to raise the rent or yvette them. -- or e evict them. they said their support system was bad. in the end, last week there was
1:41 pm
an editor with the newspaper, and the it spokesman admitted they only have a certain amount of threat. thank you very much. >> thank you. next person, please state your name. >> i am happy to say they are located where they are. you have my wife's 50th birthday. i find the owners to be very friendly.
1:42 pm
i would just like to say i am glad the entertainment commission is working with them to make the venue a safe place. i think they want that. as far as a safety issue, i think the court could do a lot better by regulating traffic. >> thank you very much. >> i am one of the entertainers hired at jelly's. i want you to know it is a wonderful place for a musician to come out. there is not much pay, but it is the enjoyment of going out there and being able to give employment to my musicians.
1:43 pm
i am work at the morning, so it is not along venue. i have my wife, and my kids just started coming, and they love it. they are making a lot of changes, and they have already got where not to cross. they are doing everything they can to stay up to code. it is a family atmosphere, and there are so many people there who have become part of my family. >> i work as a planner in oakland. i have been coming for the past 11 years. it has some of the best musicians in the bay area.
1:44 pm
i have gone alone week after week. i think that the events that happened were part of the community. they were amazing together. we would be glad to cooperate. it is a cultural venues like nothing else. it is an amazing place. we should keep this place going. thank you. >> good evening.
1:45 pm
i have rented shelley's for events. -- jelly's for events. over the years, they have provided an affordable space for people to rent, and i have been there many evenings where it has just been the staff, because it has always been safe, and there has never been any altercations. i have rented for even as because it is handicapped accessible. thank you. >> thank you. next. >> my name is patricia doyle, and i want to thank everybody here, and i wanted to save
1:46 pm
chile's also offers -- to say jelly's also offers of food and wine tasting done by a chef, and i feel it is affordable and important, and they hire the best musicians, more so than any other club in san francisco. it is a very affordable place that i would feel really sad if it went. i wanted to make the comment about other people's comments, too, because it is not just a latino as saying. -- latino thing. it is people who love to dance,
1:47 pm
and it is a great place. i do not think the owners are really out there to make money as they are to provide a service to us, the people. >> thank you. >> good evening, i wanted to comment on the fact that i have firsthand knowledge of the owner of shelley's -- jelly's and how diligent she is in making sure they follow all the rules and regulations. also, i know this has been brought to light by a horrendous
1:48 pm
crime, but i want to comment it would also be a crime to lose the livelihood of all the people that are there. >> thank you. next. >> my name is scott. i do not think you are going to find anyone here that will say it is a mismanaged or badly run venue. it is a positive influence on that area. the biggest things i am hoping the commissioners take away is to the cab violence that has happened -- to look at the violence that has happened in san francisco. i would like to applaud mr. meko for looking at this.
1:49 pm
we had a number of instances taking place. and murder and violence is serious. there has been over 20 murders in san francisco. the entertainment community has been targeted, and there has been a reaction to having these cases shutdown without all the facts being looked they have operated since 1994. a i have heard a lot of reports that they have been expensive and not reliable perhaps that can be re-evaluated. i think what they need to do is get these videos to the report -- to the port.
1:50 pm
i will try to write you some details letters, and i hope the entertainment commission can stand up for the truth about what is going on so these places continue to survive. >> my name is patricia. i think it represents the international portion of the community. i have been too many vans and have never felt unsafe in any way, but i would also like to mention the fees were unfortunate incidences'.
1:51 pm
if there is some sort of game plan that needs to go into effect to make sure they have a little more guidance, that would be great. i understand this is not a conviction hearing, but i understand your actions will fuel or help halt the proceedings, so i hope you take that into account. thank you. >> thank you very much. >> good evening. my name is carol. i am a resident of san francisco. my job is to ensure equal access to justice, and i am worried they are suffering and injustice. i am also curious about this
1:52 pm
scanner. it brings together people from all different walks of life. i go there alone. i feel completely safe walking to my car. it is an intimate atmosphere. the place has nurtured young musicians over the years. it is not uncommon for visiting musicians to make an appointment -- make an appearance.
1:53 pm
as the commission says, it seems to continue, so i would hope you would use some of your influence to make sure it is not be evicted and that we continue to have this wonderful venue for music in san francisco. >> thank you. next. >> i am the band leader of our group. i have been working with police and rickie since they opened in 1994. -- with them since they opened in 1994. this is one of the best clubs i
1:54 pm
have ever worked in. my take on this is to beef up security outside and make sure people do not loiter in front of the club. that is the only sing i can see that needs to be corrected. -- the only thing i can see that needs to be corrected. it is a beautiful venue. you can take your kids there for some of the best entertainment around. i am hoping they will stay around forever. >> my name is alex, and i have been throwing several events at jelly's. they have always been extremely diligent, especially if they make sure all the rules and
1:55 pm
regulations were followed and practiced during the even when we reached the capacity, they closed it down. there was an altercation, and security handled it professionally and made sure the other patrons did not feel it was getting out of control and people were escorted out of the building in an effective manner. there is a huge parking lot across the street. it is totally open, and i do not see it any way they should be expected to be responsible for that space. it seems like the people who own the parking lot should be responsible.
1:56 pm
it seems obvious today capitalize on suspension to issue a quick the eviction, -- quick eviction, and if it was a more routine response to the loss of a human life, which seems appropriate that drastic measures be taken, but these extra conditions would be a public reflection that perhaps the original permit was in adequate only because they already had three provisions. >> thank you.
1:57 pm
>> it is a little upsetting. it is not forgotten. a couple years back there was a death that happen during a giants game. the parking lot is huge. there are days when you do get -- the comment that was made that when giants games are open, it clears out and there are no giants fans that come. that is not true. they enjoy it. it is one of the best venues. they do not have to get dressed up we do it for the love of the
1:58 pm
music. from 4:00 until 10:00 -- 9:00, it is people's way to get a little bit of music and still get home in time to get the rest for monday. if there is anything to be done, please do what you can. >> i do not know if it is appropriate to let you speak again, since you were representing show it to staff, because we would not allow the club to speak during public comments. they had an opportunity. >> there was an issue raised. i do not think they understood the basis of that, and i wanted
1:59 pm
to be clear.
