share, particularly at the time when there is an anti-immigrant backlash. it has been a wonderful place for many years, and i sincerely hope there is some positive press that comes out of this horrible event, but you can see there is a lot of love and appreciation. >> thank you. sarah. >> i am a homeowner across the street. i am here to say we are very concerned about the incident, and we hope the commission takes
11:31 pm
serious security measures that can be put in place. of we are the only resident in the immediate vicinity, and we want to make sure it grows up in that space. >> thank you. jake jacobs. >> my name is jay jacobs. i am a salsa instructor. i have been teaching dance for almost as long as they have been open. i think it is a very unique venue. the community is really a very givers community, and the security guards at the other club always love soften night
11:32 pm
raided soften night, because there are few incidents -- really love salsa night, because there are few incidences'. what happens is the club owners will rent out places to other people. it does lead to some unfortunate incidents. it is a huge area. the other point i wanted to make is there are not many venues fed to support the latin music. -- venues that do support latin
11:33 pm
music. they would have a pretty significant impact, and we are lucky to have venues that do support it. musicians need the work. they have a great location. >> thank you. stephanie dalton. >> i write newsletters' that got to 7000 people a week. -- that go out to 7000 people a week. i am an advocate for musicians.
11:34 pm
a lot of people cannot speak of, so i speak of for them, and i also speak of for community and keeping it altogether. i.m. kind of upset about the entertainment commission. i think they acted hastily. icings they were looking for a reason. -- i think they were looking for a reason. i reached out for my community. i have gotten 300 signatures end comments.
11:35 pm
before i give it to you, i want to read one gentleman,. a support this because they were never given a bad rap. i think this incident is being linked to jelly's by mistake. the people involved in this incident may have stopped by because they saw the crowd but was leaving. -- they saw the crowd that was leaving. i did not see any problems with this incident. please sign the petition. >> if anyone else has public comments, please stand against
11:36 pm
that line. you will have two minutes. please do not lock the door. hello, can you find yourself a seat please? can you stand by the door? please state your name. you have two minutes. >> i am the engineer. i have been working for more than 50 years. i was the evaluator for those that could return in 1989. i had first time knowledge of
11:37 pm
the proprietors of jelly's, and i want to share two events. in 1989, the port was threatening them, and they needed to do something at their expense to make the building safe. we did investigate. the building was safe. we issued a report, and they admitted the reason there was pressure to raise the rent or yvette them. -- or e evict them. they said their support system was bad.
11:38 pm
in the end, last week there was an editor with the newspaper, and the it spokesman admitted they only have a certain amount of threat. thank you very much. >> thank you. next person, please state your name. >> i am happy to say they are located where they are. you have my wife's 50th birthday. i find the owners to be very
11:39 pm
friendly. i would just like to say i am glad the entertainment commission is working with them to make the venue a safe place. i think they want that. as far as a safety issue, i think the court could do a lot better by regulating traffic. >> thank you very much. >> i am one of the entertainers hired at jelly's. i want you to know it is a wonderful place for a musician to come out. there is not much pay, but it is the enjoyment of going out there and being able to give
11:40 pm
employment to my musicians. i am work at the morning, so it is not along venue. i have my wife, and my kids just started coming, and they love it. they are making a lot of changes, and they have already got where not to cross. they are doing everything they can to stay up to code. it is a family atmosphere, and there are so many people there who have become part of my family. >> i work as a planner in oakland. i have been coming for the past 11 years.
11:41 pm
it has some of the best musicians in the bay area. i have gone alone week after week. i think that the events that happened were part of the community. they were amazing together. we would be glad to cooperate. it is a cultural venues like nothing else. it is an amazing place. we should keep this place going.
11:42 pm
thank you. >> good evening. i have rented shelley's for events. -- jelly's for events. over the years, they have provided an affordable space for people to rent, and i have been there many evenings where it has just been the staff, because it has always been safe, and there has never been any altercations. i have rented for even as because it is handicapped accessible. thank you. >> thank you. next. >> my name is patricia doyle, and i want to thank everybody
11:43 pm
here, and i wanted to save chile's also offers -- to say jelly's also offers of food and wine tasting done by a chef, and i feel it is affordable and important, and they hire the best musicians, more so than any other club in san francisco. it is a very affordable place that i would feel really sad if it went. i wanted to make the comment about other people's comments, too, because it is not just a latino as saying.
11:44 pm
-- latino thing. it is people who love to dance, and it is a great place. i do not think the owners are really out there to make money as they are to provide a service to us, the people. >> thank you. >> good evening, i wanted to comment on the fact that i have firsthand knowledge of the owner of shelley's -- jelly's and how diligent she is in making sure they follow all the rules and
11:45 pm
regulations. also, i know this has been brought to light by a horrendous crime, but i want to comment it would also be a crime to lose the livelihood of all the people that are there. >> thank you. next. >> my name is scott. i do not think you are going to find anyone here that will say it is a mismanaged or badly run venue. it is a positive influence on that area. the biggest things i am hoping the commissioners take away is to the cab violence that has happened -- to look at the violence that has happened in san francisco.
11:46 pm
i would like to applaud mr. meko for looking at this. we had a number of instances taking place. and murder and violence is serious. there has been over 20 murders in san francisco. the entertainment community has been targeted, and there has been a reaction to having these cases shutdown without all the facts being looked they have operated since 1994. a i have heard a lot of reports that they have been expensive and not reliable perhaps that can be re-evaluated. i think what they need to do is
11:47 pm
get these videos to the report -- to the port. i will try to write you some details letters, and i hope the entertainment commission can stand up for the truth about what is going on so these places continue to survive. >> my name is patricia. i think it represents the international portion of the community. i have been too many vans and have never felt unsafe in any way, but i would also like to
11:48 pm
mention the fees were unfortunate incidences'. if there is some sort of game plan that needs to go into effect to make sure they have a little more guidance, that would be great. i understand this is not a conviction hearing, but i understand your actions will fuel or help halt the proceedings, so i hope you take that into account. thank you. >> thank you very much. >> good evening. my name is carol. i am a resident of san francisco. my job is to ensure equal access to justice, and i am worried they are suffering and
11:49 pm
11:50 pm
musicians to make an appointment -- make an appearance. as the commission says, it seems to continue, so i would hope you would use some of your influence to make sure it is not be evicted and that we continue to have this wonderful venue for music in san francisco. >> thank you. next. >> i am the band leader of our group. i have been working with police and rickie since they opened in 1994. -- with them since they opened
11:51 pm
in 1994. this is one of the best clubs i have ever worked in. my take on this is to beef up security outside and make sure people do not loiter in front of the club. that is the only sing i can see that needs to be corrected. -- the only thing i can see that needs to be corrected. it is a beautiful venue. you can take your kids there for some of the best entertainment around. i am hoping they will stay around forever. >> my name is alex, and i have been throwing several events at
11:52 pm
jelly's. they have always been extremely diligent, especially if they make sure all the rules and regulations were followed and practiced during the even when we reached the capacity, they closed it down. there was an altercation, and security handled it professionally and made sure the other patrons did not feel it was getting out of control and people were escorted out of the building in an effective manner. there is a huge parking lot across the street. it is totally open, and i do not see it any way they should be expected to be responsible for that space.
11:53 pm
it seems like the people who own the parking lot should be responsible. it seems obvious today capitalize on suspension to issue a quick the eviction, -- quick eviction, and if it was a more routine response to the loss of a human life, which seems appropriate that drastic measures be taken, but these extra conditions would be a public reflection that perhaps the original permit was in adequate only because they already had three provisions. >> thank you.
11:54 pm
>> it is a little upsetting. it is not forgotten. a couple years back there was a death that happen during a giants game. the parking lot is huge. there are days when you do get -- the comment that was made that when giants games are open, it clears out and there are no giants fans that come. that is not true. they enjoy it. it is one of the best venues. they do not have to get dressed
11:55 pm
up we do it for the love of the music. from 4:00 until 10:00 -- 9:00, it is people's way to get a little bit of music and still get home in time to get the rest for monday. if there is anything to be done, please do what you can. >> i do not know if it is appropriate to let you speak again, since you were representing show it to staff, because we would not allow the club to speak during public comments. they had an opportunity. >> there was an issue raised.
11:56 pm
i do not think they understood the basis of that, and i wanted to be clear. >> if i may, i would request the representative come forward before we make a decision, and i will ask my question. >> can you take a seat and let us complete public comments? please state your name. you have two minutes. >> i want to say last night i spoke against it. tonight i am speaking against kicking a club out of the port area, and i want to say that though i do not recognize the person here tonight, i used to attend ball park meetings on a regular basis, and the manager used to show up all the time.
11:57 pm
this is one of the few clubs that is really a good neighbor. they want to be involved with what is going on and the activities of around them, and i have noticed through their participation and the committees involving their community. also common -- also, it should not just be one place running all the salsa defense. -- events. kokomo is a great place. shelly's is a more intimate space. -- jelly's is a more intimate space. i almost cried when i heard about the shooting incident. where is it going to happen next? i suggested maybe they need
11:58 pm
officers. unfortunately, the clubs might have to pay for a little while. they want to get the message out, you are not welcome in certain clubs. they are not interested in how much fun people have had. i have had a lot of fun. >> thank you. next. >> my name is jennifer houck. i work with the california public utilities commission in the consumer affairs branch. in my previous history, i worked with the comedy club and basically facilitated as a volunteer whenever they needed it.
11:59 pm
i noticed in the previous commentary by the police department they stated there are only two events that go on in the parking lot. that is not necessarily true. cirque du soleil does have activity in the parking lot. as well as corporate events. it is unfair to limit the problems to clientele. it is pretty much truthful to say those people will do so.
