resolution authorizing the department of the district of san francisco to retroactively accept and expend a grant in the amount of $750,000 through the united states department of justice, bureau of justice assistance, for a program entitled "san the grant period of october 1, 2010, through march 31, 2012. supervisor chiu: i know that we have a representative from the district attorney's office. welcome. >> i am here to answer any questions that we have about the grant. this is a great opportunity for the people of san francisco. transitional housing for offenders is in great need and we never have enough. a chance to open a great facility in san francisco with a foundation that has a nationally and internationally recognized model for helping re- enter individuals. a great opportunity for this city.

i am happy to answer any questions you might have. supervisor chiu: any questions? seeing no one, are there any members of the public it would like to comment? i can see one individual. two minutes for speaker. >> when it comes to providing any type of rehabilitation to those who are released from the prisons, we need to get some sort of information and data. giving $750,000 is not the right way to go. there is no doubt that the nancy does good work. there is no doubt that they get a lot of money from corporations. this is an institution that is well-established. what happens is the district attorney's office has not done

their homework. there are many institutions and homes, many other qualified people that would like to serve, people that are released from the prisons. like the bay view hunter point. here we have $750,000. about one year ago we had $350,000 given to the mayor's office of families and youth. here we have the district attorney's office arbitrarily coming here and saying, you know what, we have $750,000 and it will be given to the lancet. that is not how it is done in san francisco. the district attorney's office has been very negligent. not only in this matter, but in the community response network. someone needs to audit the district attorney's office when

it comes to this type of grant and restoration of justice. here in san francisco we have various to constituents that will not just accept people coming here and making general statements and giving such large sums of money to an institution that is already valid. thank you very much supervisor chiu:chiu are there -- thank you very much. supervisor chiu: public comment on this item is closed. are there any final comments from the district attorney's office? >> supervisor, thank you. to respond to the gentleman's comments, i want to be sure that we have done our homework on the matter. we have looked at all of the data done on returning offenders over the last couple of years. we have consulted with the adult probation department about their needs. we feel very secure that this is a good model at this time.
