3:00 pm
at the last meeting of this board on saturday, i noticed it is clear that a lot has happened in the last few weeks, and a lot has happened in the last few days, and i did not think that saturday was the time to reference that and to talk about what happened, but i do believe in the context of assassinating an interim nature that it is important -- of selecting an interim mayor that it is important to begin a discussion of where we are as a city and as a board of supervisors. youlet me preface my comments by saying this supervisor who was proud and honored to be able to
3:01 pm
represent district 9 is committed to working with ed wynn lee, -- edwin lee and david chiu, but i think there has to be a context, and as someone who was adopted to office two years ago, i think it is important for us to understand there has been a significant change in city hall. for those of us who are part of the progressive movement, i think we have to recognize the progress of majority of this board no longer exists. progressives no longer control the board of supervisors. for the first time since the last round in 2000, and we have
3:02 pm
a president of the board of supervisors who was elected without a clear and aggressive majority and who was elected with the full backing with the entire moderate bloc of supervisors, and what is remarkable about the fact that we no longer have to progressive control over this board is that the loss of this board happens not at the ballot box, but it happened here at city hospital, and while some in the progressive movement have questioned whether or not that this case -- that is the case, the fact is of the progressive majority controls the inner workings of this board including the makeup of committee assignments.
3:03 pm
it's no longer does fat, and we will soon see the clear ramification and -- it no longer does that, and we will soon see the ramifications. it was called a shift to the center. david chiu talked about a changing of the guard, and he talked about how none of us were voted into this office to take a position. we were voted into office to get things done. again let me respectfully agreed and disagree with president shoe, with whom i look forward to working. while i understand the point, i do not believe it is accurate to say none of us and was elected to take these positions.
3:04 pm
i do think we were a elected to take certain positions that at the end of the day deserved the interests and needs of san francisco's, and i believe we were elected to take positions consistent with the principles with which we ran before being elected, and while i agree it is important to get things done, i do not think that getting things done is enough. we have to ask ourselves what is it we are getting done. what is it that guides those decisions? not only that, but how is it we are getting those things done, and for whom it is it that we are doing what we are doing? is it for the people and city enof san francisco, or is it for
3:05 pm
downtown corporate interests that have so much power in the city, and when it comes to getting things done, how is it we are getting things done? i hope it is not getting things done behind closed doors, and thinking about what is about to happen, i think about the progressive movement, because i think that implied in the notion is the idea that progressives cannot get things done, and i am reminded of the fact that the past does provide some guidance. we saw the mayor of oakland
3:06 pm
resign in a testament to the five said you can been progressive and get things done, and this city made to district elections have been. it is progressive said made health care possible. it is progressives that made domestic partnerships happened. it is progressives that made police reform happen. i want to be very clear about what we are about and who we are as we are about to enter a new transition the progressive saudis that got us here need to endure. i believe governments -- the progressive strategies need to
3:07 pm
endure. we have an obligation to relieve the suffering of more than 44 million people in this country who live in poverty, but we have to save the middle class and the last remnants of safe middle wages common -- middle ages, but the point is not to scapegoat city workers, that it is not just downtown corporations but also small businesses often are struggling to stay open. it means we have to fight and protect civil rights, and we knew we talk about diversity -- when we talk about diversity, it is making sure that we make the lives of those people whose diversity we cherished actually better. it means that the people of san
3:08 pm
francisco control this government and that we do have stability inferior -- we do have stability. we need to have transparency in government, and the big decisions are going to happen in public, and it also means there is something more important than ourselves. there is something that transcends us as individuals. that is why we are progressives. i look forward to continuing in this discussion. we will continue to work with the mayor and the new board president.
3:09 pm
supervisor wiener: can you hear me? >> we are going to have to extend that microphone during your -- that microphone. good >> before i get into talking about my support for the mayor, i think i need to respond to what was said. this is an incredibly diverse city. it is the most perverse effect i can imagine, not just in terms of race and ethnicity it and put -- and sexual orientation but in terms of the types of jobs and people do and businesses people own, it is an amazingly the
3:10 pm
verse plays that deserves a diverse government -- it is an amazingly diverse place that deserves a diverse government. what happened on saturday with this board was extraordinary in terms of the coalition that came in together to elect this board. the fact that you had elsbernd joining together to elect this board shows me that the board is healthy, that people can work together, that we do not have to character everyone as being one thing or another, that there is complexity to every member of this board, and i am proud of that.
3:11 pm
president chiu has my complete support and a lot of support across the board, and i look forward to working with him over the next two years. i am proud to support a believe the regioned -- to support ed lee as mayor. we will have our second mayor in a row that is a member of district 8. i can think of no better qualified person to do this job. being interim mayor for about 365 days when we had a looming budget deficit and a lot of challenges is not necessarily the most desirable thing to do,
3:12 pm
but fed has stepped up and this is willing to do -- but he has stepped up and is willing to do it. you do not have even a few months to get acclimated to the job. you need to be able to step in on day one, and that is why i am supporting him. he is tremendously qualified in so many different areas. i will be voting for him today. >> thank you, president chiu. today is a historic day. not only are we and electing a mayor but the first asian american mayor. youit is truly historic. i wanted to mention two things.
3:13 pm
first to acknowledge our sheriff, michael hennessey. i have known him literally my entire life. his reputation on questionable. he has served as our share of for over 30 years. good -- as our sheriff for over 30 years. his tenure has been marked in many areas. members from the lgbt community and other minorities, but what i wanted to mention in particular was his attributes as a person.
3:14 pm
i cannot think of a more honest, trustworthy person full of integrity serving our government today. he is simply a straight shooter, and we are fortunate to have michael hennessey as our share of. he is one of the true gems and -- as our sheriff. he is one of the true gems. secondly, while i know you did not initially vote for him last week, i truly believe and what you did was really in the spirit of the best interest of san francisco, and i knew you take it -- i know you took the chance to ask questions, but i think
3:15 pm
that shines a great light on what we can do as of board. it is my sincere hope that cooperation continues over the last two years. i want to make sure i mention that to all of you. i had the chance to speak to lee two times last week. i cannot think of anyone more qualified and very much look forward to working with him over the next two years to move sandford cisco full word, so congratulations. now -- to move san francisco forward, so congratulations. supervisor mirkarimi: i think your comments are spawned in emphasizing the dedication of
3:16 pm
share of tennessee -- r. scott on a regionre -- are spot-on in emphasizing the dedication of share of tennessee -- sheriff hennessey. there was a process we did not see coming with a tactic that i hope is a thing of the past, and that was the introduction and advancing of the name for consideration. i guarantee some of our surprise would have been lessened if those who proposed the name would have done so in a style and a manner i think we would all be expecting looking forward at what has been the process of reform.
3:17 pm
-- the process before as i indicated last friday, i have noticed -- known mr. lee for many years. i have always found him to be very responsive in the variety of capacities he was serving. there are people i have also known for man-eater's -- many years that i listen to as well. what i hope is as we look forward to the confirmation of mr. lee that we are also leaving behind the tactics of last week that i thought made the process feel more clumsy than it should have been, because this is once
3:18 pm
in a multi-generation kind of a vent that has confronted this government. that has ever been processed by any of us in coming close to it. it was only because of the assassinations of mayor mosconi and supervisor milk. none of that should retain our open arms in working with mr. lee. i expect as we were all trying to reflect on what our approach would-be with the administration is we will see that level of continuity, and attention and
3:19 pm
determination to get the job done, nuance to the need of our specific districts, but larger for the greater goals of the city and aggregate's, and it gives an opportunity to relax the partnership that is required of all sides and to be able to inject a level of smart politics, not necessarily branded as a progressive or moderate or conservative, but smart politics that take us forward so it is to the welfare of those who we want to serve and who need the attention where there is not. it concerns me the it is couched in the term progressive politics. it has been mutated.
3:20 pm
that is an important discussion to half with regard to the direction politics is going in this city, and progressive politics needs to qualify its new definition, which is more than just to we are by name or by ethnicity or cultured but by what we stand for. >> thank you. supervisor avalos. supervisor avalos: there we go. watching oakland mayor kwan walk in the room was exciting. she walked in the room and had a beautiful red dress on and was a commanding presence, and that
3:21 pm
was exciting to see the new mayor of oakland walk into the room, and that reminds me of a sense of stability we are running towards finally so we will be ensured of who our interim mayor is going to i have been i us why maybe thousands of people -- interim mayor is going. i have been lost by thousands of people, are very excited about it, but mostly i felt agony about having to be in this strange position to fill one again newsom was going to leave office, so i am glad to be close to finally getting the vote to select interim mayor. i want to thank all the people that their names forward as
3:22 pm
well, knowing what i huge responsibility it is. i have watched closely mayor gavin newsom and snow, she had to put up -- and i know how much he had to put a cliff in terms of dealing with city government and the difficult choices people have to make every day, and all those choices we make our made a tenfold, twentyfold in the office of mayor. i do not envy anyone in the five opposition. certainly you have a lot of power, but the responsibility is a daunting one, so i want to thank anyone who puts their name
3:23 pm
out. ed harrington and met with a couple times. i do appreciate all your work, sheriff michael hennessey, and i want to apologize for how difficult that must have been for you last week. you were the one who was going to be appointed, but that did not happen, and i want to thank ed lee, who look that may be losing a lot of making a decision about running for -- who looked at navy losing a lot --maybe losing a lot. he is going to be the person i thought was best for local hire ring carrier -- local hire ring. he understood city hall very
3:24 pm
well, and i was very excited about the asian american community having someone in the mayor's office, knowing the experience for chinese americans has not been a pleasant experience, and to have a leader like edwin lease is quite an accomplishment. i want to congratulate the asian american community for this incredible place we are at right now, and i look forward to many years of asian american leadership continuing in san francisco. i plan to vote yes. supervisor kim: thank you, and let me also a joy in my colleagues in saying it is an honor, and i am very excited to
3:25 pm
serve. -- let me also join my colleagues in saying this is an honor and i am excited to surf. --serve. also in bringing more equity. i am also excited to support ed lee for interim mayor, and i want to support a previous board, including share of tennessee -- share of tennessee sher -- sheriff hennessey. i have known ed along time. he spent 10 years as a managing attorney, and he was part of the litigation team that brought increased hiring and promotion
3:26 pm
for clennon, asian americans, latinos and -- for women, asian americans, and latinos. he also represented tenants in the first rent strike ever against the housing authority, which led to one of our strongest public housing organizations. he litigated the groundbreaking anti-eviction strategy. they are amazing leaders for our community and a huge part of shifting the power of voices in san francisco superior -- in san francisco. i know i am listing many of the things we all have read about
3:27 pm
and know about ed, but i think it is historic in many ways to have him as the mayor. i met him when he was an organizer, and he was always responsive and respectful, and he took the job seriously. he very much wanted to connect public resources to a constituent superior to -- to constituents. i think it is nice to be part of a commission that is unanimous. i think this agreement is good, and we are representing a lot of constituents, but i think it speaks volumes that we will all be supporting him today, and i want to end west with a q
3:28 pm
regionuote -- with a quote. i want to help not only our community but the disenfranchised in san francisco. i think it is important that we have a mayor that does that, and that it was never about his qualifications or questions about his credentials, and i think it is important to all of us about that was never in question. congratulations to our future interim nature, and i am looking for to the vote. thank you very much. supervisor mar: i am looking forward to a unanimous vote.
3:29 pm
i look forward to further dialogue has demographics change and politics change with different forces, and i look forward to that continued dialogue. i feel tremendously proud to be part of this board of supervisors in 2011. we will be on the verge of having the first asian-pacific islander mayor in san francisco. i net ed 20 years ago, and i know him to be a person with a tremendous schumer and a huge heart, -- humor and a huge heart. i also want to say i think he was the most experienced person placed before us,
