families. firefighters do it together. we live together, we eating together, we cleaning together, we drill together, we respond together, and we laughing together. we joking together, we fight together, we watch each other's backs together, and sometimes we die together and sometimes we are buried together. and today, we are all grieving together. not just firefighters, but all of us who acknowledge the sacrifice that vinny and tony have made for us. in our first greeting today, the commander of the army wants

to commemorate the death of all those who died in battle and he adds a sacrifice to the temple in jerusalem in their honor. and so today, we are gathering in this cathedral to offer a sacrifice in memory of those who have made the supreme sacrifice. tony and vinny died together and they will be buried together. and it is so important that we be together today. we come from many different backgrounds, many different races, many different religions, many different genders and departments, but today we do this together. we do it because we have to be together at a time like this.

every time that a firefighter goes out the doors of the fire house, they never know what they are really going to find. the dispatch can be as far as the moon from what they might actually find at the scene. and it might be just a false alarm, it might be a nuance call, it might not have any merits, it might be someone with bird food on the stove or a cut finger, or a cardiac arrest. a small fire can become as it did the other day, a greater alarm fire. so we go out that door, not knowing what we will find, and not knowing what we will really face. firefighters always respond together. but they usually respond to a

stranger, to a stranger's home to a stranger's need, just as in the good samaritan today. and they never pass by. they are always there to help to encourage, to rescue, and to fight whatever needs to be fought. we know that they are sworn to serve the people of this city and they do it well and with a great deal of pride. on june 2 engine 26 responded to a call that did not seem like it would be what it turned out to be. not only a greater alarm, but a tragic moment for that house and for the family and friends of vinny and tony. and a small fire became a

deadly one. the occupants escaped safely, but the firefighters went in as they always do together and faced the very loss of their lives together. we acknowledge the great pride, not only the gifts that vinny and tony have given us in their gift of their own lines, but we know that we really appreciate that they have taught us not only how to die, but how to live. we know that both of them and the many calls that they responded to, both the ambulance and the assist and as the paramedic, that they showed such amazing compassion, especially tony and any of you who know him know that this wild crazy funny guy was the

most compassionate and competent of the paramedics. and all of you know vinny, know the pride he took in his job, what a confident officer he was, how he always looked out for his crew and always wanted to keep them safe. as we honor them today, we know that they are not safe. tony would certainly tell us that one. yet we know that they are heros because of who they were and what they did. and they gave their all and they gave it for all of us. we know today that all of our rituals and all of our prayers will not take away our pain or the pain of their families. but let us in a real sense be so important that we are here today, that we acknowledge what happened and we acknowledge the

gifts that they gave us, especially in being san francisco firefighters. and we know that as we honor them, we also honor the perez and the vallero families who share that with us. and we always do it together. that's the fire department's way. and we have a unique bond that if you are not a firefighter, it's hard for them to express or define that, but it is a bond that cannot be broken, even by the power of death. so today we sometimes get it and sometimes we are buried together, we thank vinny and tony for not only being together and showing us what it
