4:01 pm
and there will be inspections. they did do their cast inspection. i want to applaud them that monthly, they are assembling a meeting so that businesses that may have received a letter can come and talk to them. i attended a meeting last week and there will be some new business that received a letter and had it not been for their consistent information education through the emergence newsletter, she would have thrown away the letter. nashua be able to respond.
4:02 pm
i appreciate the merchant's association being very proactive and responsive to their merchants. and katherine who is the in turn is concluding her internship, but she worked this summer to really start compiling some early detailed information. and we're close to 300 cases. this does not include cases that were filed in state court. if there are some interesting trends, there is a high number of these cases that are in the richmond and the sense that restaurants. there is just a little bit more

data collection and we need to add this the cases. what i would like to do is start reaching out to the businesses, tracking who is so open and seeing if they would be willing to communicate information in terms of the amount of settlements. most of these cases, they settled out of court and so we don't know what the amounts are. those are some of the next steps. mr. johnson has written a guide on how to hire an inspector. it has a good list of recommendations. live translated it to the six different languages that we have been transmitting material. america's cup. we are reaching out to the

business organizations to get a meeting on the books scheduled in late september or early october to begin to talk to small businesses in terms of what they can do to engage with the event authority or with america's cup. that is being worked on and the plan for the types of businesses, what is going to be needed, by that time, should be fairly well-defined, probably at the 500 foot level. but that we can start beginning to have the conversations about how they can become engaged with doing business. because the timing will be pretty quick once is done, trying to consolidate the number of presentations so that we
4:05 pm
maximize the number of businesses attending a meeting with getting this information out. i will be providing you with a list of the presentations as they get scheduled so that you are aware of that. if you know of any business organizations that are not on the list and need to be reached out to, then let me know. the nondiscrimination or prior arrest and conviction record, he led the presentation last month with a hearing on july 25. only a couple businesses attended. scott has also been soliciting input, so i will be working with the legislation and policy committee in terms of what kind of final presentation we are going to want to have for this commission.
4:06 pm
they will soon be moving into some legislation. and what information they're going to need. so think about it and you can let us both know ahead of time, but the legislation and policy committee, this will be on the august agenda. i have been invited to participate in a task force that is called the health care services master plan task force which is taking a look at combining -- combining from the planning side and the health side. and putting together a 10-year plan from those perspectives about what needs to be done from a health service side and how it affects planning. i have been invited to attend to representatives.
4:07 pm
there was an introductory meeting last week, and we will be conducting some public meetings and i will let you know those dates as well for public input and encourage you to attend those meetings. i will keep you apprised as more develops with vat. and lastly, i wanted to make a note that the office has contact with the design group to work on developing a new logo for the office and a look and feel that will also affect the brochure, the web site, and the outreach committee will get a first presentation in august for some preliminary concepts of our
4:08 pm
identity development. and i am encouraging them to develop a proposal that develops a whole department. jane is working on designing a new website for us that will be easier to navigate. and a bit more sophisticated. this will probably take several months for us to do. that concludes my report. >> i have a comment about the open sightseeing thing. i went on one of those a couple weeks ago. we decided to hop on it and who were around the city. you put it in your pannier, you have the year from things other was no amplified sound.
4:09 pm
is that on the upper deck? >> i just want to comment on the legislative action and the input from the commission. i am pleased to see that many of the recommendations on the sales tax has been taken very seriously peer ahead, and literally -- has been taken very seriously. >> no public comment on this, we can move to the next item.
4:10 pm
>> and the main thing that i would like to report on tonight. how they want to form a committee to discuss formal retell and possible other items of interest to both of us. this might be an easier way to go forward on some issues since the scheduling is so difficult for a full committee meeting and a commission meeting between the both of us. and to that extent, our committee recommended three members to be assigned to the committee that would be president o'brien, vice president adams and myself to
4:11 pm
join 3 planning commissioners to discuss these issues getting some headway going forward. the full commission is going to need to take action to establish that committee. i would think this is an appropriate time to move ahead with that? >> we have a date schedule. it is not an action item for tonight, and we have time, so it will be agendized for september. once again, i am very pleased that we will be able to start addressing things, a good, solid, working committee that we can discuss things and move forward. i believe everything else we
4:12 pm
discussed has been in front of the full commission. that completes my report. >> any questions? next item. >> permitting committee report >> there is nothing to report this month. >> outreach committee report. >> please do not have a report. >> president's report. >> just a couple of things. the commissioner pretty much covered everything as far as the subcommittee is concerned. the only thing she may have mentioned, but just in case, the president and the vice president will meet with corresponding members at the planning commission. and hopefully, we can move to formulate the subcommittee with
4:13 pm
the members mentioned already and take that as an action item at the next meeting following that meeting between the president and vice-president. that is the only other part of the item i would cover. just for myself, how it was mentioned a couple of times tonight that the merchant's association was reference and a very proactive on the handicapped access issue. i am attending their meetings for probably two or three or four months now. maybe most of the year. i didn't announce who i was or anything, i just participated quietly. i just participated and made notes and observe the proceedings. last month, at the conclusion of
4:14 pm
the meeting, i introduced myself into a was. and know whether shea -- i should say mistakenly, or intent to report ont he a -- on the affairs of the small business commission. i concluded that if they like to approve need to be the liaison, they unanimously approved. i goodwill myself and to another job here. they were delighted to have me present. they appreciated that i was there and they are very aware of the small business commission, as you can probably tell from some of the proceedings this evening around handicapped access. they also made it very clear to me that they will provide any
4:15 pm
support for issues we think are important. they would offer their opinions on issues going forward. not that they're not doing that already anyway. that is it for me. >> the vice president of the report. >> i have nothing to report at this time. >> commission reports. >> i just want to let of i did attend the nondiscrimination for prior arrest or conviction hearing that we held on july 25. there were presentations from the public defender's office, the district attorney. members of the reentry council as well as the human rights commission. it was a very broad discussion about the issues around discrimination. one in four california adults

apply where they will be getting an -- >> 700 people will be released and they will have to find the -- >> jobs for them. we have to reach out because it will all be part of the training. it is better to have them employed and doing something. i very much appreciate you bring that up today, because it did come up with the merchant association meeting. >> is the most significant factor in reducing recidivism for an individual. >> and that concludes your report? next item? >> general public comment. >> seeing them, next item. >> i have a brief request. i think we spoke of as casually

before, but i would like to involve our commission in out reach that would put the america's cup sponsors in touch with merchants and businesses in that corridor where it will be occurring may be negatively impacted by traffic and parking congestion. i think it is something we need to address. it is a fairly large area that will be impacted. i would just like to see if we can be a liaison of some sort with the america's cut folks to try to help out and to mitigate those problems. >> just to clarify, it is about mitigating.
4:19 pm
>> primarily the parking and congestion problems. >> will there be a point person for that? >> i am not sure how we want to approach it. commissioner atoms, due have ideas on that? commissioner adams: we will be meeting later this month, so when we meet, i will bring up the parking issue. i believe businesses are going to thrive in that area because of the amount of people in that area. when we have festivals and fairs, there is always a large increase in business and i hope the same things happen in the marina area. the parking issue, i am hearing
4:20 pm
a lot of people, it will be addressed. >> more specifically, also thinking about the business's operating in the immediate area of which there are many small businesses. i of the parking for those folks going in and out having meetings and going is at a critical level. many people have to spend 45 minutes parking their cars. and these folks are still going to need to proceed on with their business lives while this is going on. i the one that addressed. >> would that be something assigned to the outreach committee to start working on? >> it can be assigned to the outreach committee, i am hearing
4:21 pm
is probably time for the small business commission to get a presentation to this commission in terms of what is being worked on and what is being developed. and to get a status update to provide some feedback in regards to this. >> has the office been contacted by some of the small businesses that will be impacted by the american cup? >> so far, no. >> i have a concern about it, too. there are some businesses that are totally unconnected to the what is going on there. i don't think that is an issue or is potentially an issue. of want to try to solve a
4:22 pm
problem that doesn't exist, i wouldn't mind and getting information about the degree of business -- businesses or how many -- not many people can get to their place of business or whatever, and if there is a lot of them, i would like to know about it. i am also very excited about it, but remember. >> i am talking more about -- >> the fourth of july was a madhouse. >> i am talking about the advertising community in that area. have clients coming in and out. it is a lot of that type of people that are already severely impacted because there is never a enough parking.
4:23 pm
i would just like to know that there is some thought to the many businesses that are down in that immediate area. we say it will not be benefiting in any way financially from america's cut and want to continue to just move their businesses forward on a daily basis. >> i think you have the sense of what you need to do. i agree with it. i am very excited. it would be good if there is some impact if we knew to what degree it is there. >> i think thoughts are being given to that. but enough to have solid plans, but i think it is time for the primary focus be completing the
