5:22 pm
that is spreading a the shoulder. it is a great economic development solution. >> thank you for the presentation. it is exciting to know that the ameritech cup -- american cup will bring jobs. i understand we will have to break locate some of the businesses. what is the status on that? have they been notified? >> as we go through the ceqa process we do not have a project in san francisco until we have a certified er. our office has been contacting of the -- contacting the tantric we have to working with them and explain options and identifying
5:23 pm
commissions should the commissioners certified the are. randy and from small businesses to -- ranging from fall but -- small businesses to fairly large businesses. the america's cup is a unique event. something we are excited about, but we do not want to displace any of our small businesses. >> you have contact with them already. >> absolutely. there will be given adequate notice. and there is a the blood, their options going forward. we're looking toward amicable
5:24 pm
solutions. we should be able to achieve that. >> thank you for the presentation. it was great to hear it. after i had read all the progress reports as well as the original plan. i saw that you had done quite a bit of work and answered a lot of questions in this progress reports tread i'm most excited about the bicycle sharing and transportation. it was just wonderful to read by all those people stuck in traffic on where the food -- bicycle sharing will be a legacy benefit. i am excited about it coming to san francisco. this concept of breaking appliance is a great one. i commute, i do not have a car,
5:25 pm
i have never driven a car. natalee take public transportation and i am thoroughly familiar with each of the line to have described. i would like to see in the transportation planning's their role the as soon as you see there is justification. rapid transit is a great benefit on ben 7 and around the sweet 31 -- line. august is the most congested month for tourism. we are going to add a layer on top. there are specific events in chinatown and a lover of a city that are not part of america's cup. i think this is a good plan. i also would urge you to take a
5:26 pm
look at it right now. sooner rather there -- rather than later. the best thing is the legacy benefits. it justifies a great deal of work. we will find solutions to problems the have been faxing us every day less than in this context. i appreciate the only thing that struck me. we do have under---utilizd. -- utilize. these might be opportunities. sometimes a lot of little pieces
5:27 pm
add up into a larger piece. i think it might be a were the thing to look at. not just a couple of sites but we have more than that. and that doesn't for me. thank you. i am looking forward to it. >> thank you. we have met with a school district facility managers and discussed remote parking at school district facilities and we're looking at a couple of different solutions. one is an intercept lot. switching to transit or public sharing. also, tucson the closer locations, marina middle school which is walkable -- and we do not want people to drive from san jose within a few blocks.
5:28 pm
this makes better and more efficient use of our network. >> this is incredibly important work. i look forward to following that issue, continuing this process. hopefully i will be able to bike for 20 years. when people need help, we want to make sure they can get in. >> we're presenting to the mayor's office this friday. their work is recognized. they give us a lot of input and you will probably recognize that in the accessibility chapter. >> the demand pricing, that pilot project or that project i think will pay as benefits into
5:29 pm
the future. we have capacity year and people do not know. we could provide more accessibility on under-utilized hours and days and that is not really known. san francisco is expensive to part by if you have demand pricing, you can open up to people visiting the web they have not been able to. >> as we have been out in the community talking to residents, one of the concerns is about the closure of the embarcadero. something that was studied in the draft eir. something that happens when there is a lot pedestrians. we're working closely with
5:30 pm
businesses along that area to provide for delivery and provid, access, we are talking about a peak week day and the most likely a single lane closure. we are not talking about closing the entire embarcadero. we are really looking at the northbound lane and only after some time, just before the event, so that you can still do rush-hour, morning deliveries completely unimpeded, and as the crowd starts to mobilize, you put into effect, a kind of flexible manner so that people can still walk and bike to complete their trek. i wanted to make that clear, our intention is not to choke traffic any further on the weekend and provide access to the people that needed.
5:31 pm
president o'brien: i would like to comment on the report, i think it was very well done and very well prepared. a couple of questions, if i may. did you talk to other cities that had run the america's cup as you prepare this project? >> absolutely, who'll be going down to san diego, the host of the world series of events. it'll be the first estate site hosting since 1995. we've been getting documents from the same. one of the big challenges here, it has been out to sea. if you go to a marina, you really have to charter a boat to see the action live. this is the first time you can
5:32 pm
walk through and see the action from land. it is a very different operational mode for transportation, public safety, which management, and all of the other plans presented today. it will be a new thing for us which is why we are interested in san diego and why we are looking at other offense that happened in san francisco like fourth of july or new year's eve. any information we can get on previous experiences, we are devouring. president o'brien: and you have a rough estimate of how many an increase of population you expect during the event? is it 100,000 people, or any figures? >> the draft that was issued in july has some spectator estimates which helped define the outer envelope of
5:33 pm
possibility and that ranges from anywhere from 3000 on a weekday to a super peak weekend day which is the kind of confluence of all events. a perfect weather, high interest in the press, the end of the finals, even the giants' game thrown on later that evening, that is about 500,000 total which is the equivalent of a fleet week rican. >> the last thing, just an idea, that may be useful and that may not be useful. for the peninsula, i think it is not oyster point, i think it is further down. i wonder if there wouldn't be an idea to stop people driving up the freeway from the peninsula and consider taking a ferry service.
5:34 pm
>> that is a good vice. we understand in san francisco center. there are couple of major interest of points. the ferry terminal opens next spring. they can make sure they do have a lifting in the summer. the parking garages huge. it is close to the freeway, and we know that the hard service is about four times the service a few if the regular schedule. that drive wheels up pretty quickly so we will see if we can augment their bus lines. one of the most well used alliance is the 120. it will help us by running extra buses. and finally, those three
5:35 pm
intercept points are going to be a big heart of how we take drivers and keep them from crossing the city line. president o'brien: any public comment on this matter? public comment is closed. thank you again for that very informative reports. next item. >> commissioners, if we make, will hear items 5 and 6 first, the minutes approval, then we'll have certificates of appreciation. commissioners of, approval of the 11 meeting minutes. july of 11, 2011 minutes. >> did you have a chance to read
5:36 pm
it or you need a medic to take a look? >> i read it. >> there was a correction, the original mentor e-mail. -- minutes were emailed. >> move to approve the july minutes. president o'brien: any objections? so moved. next item. >> approval of the august 8, 2011 meeting minutes. >> i moved. >> i second. president o'brien: next item, please.
5:37 pm
>> item three, the presentation of the small business commissioned certificate of honor recognizing a local small business. this particular business will be a need to be presented in october due to their schedule. item four, presentation of the small business certificate of honor recognizing various employees of the revenue department at airports small business affairs process is part of the recognition program. >> commissioners, today i am
5:38 pm
very happy to introduce to the small business commission and to the public, the work of the sanford it is airport small business affairs office. as was the work of the airport revenue development and management team. [reading names] for many years, i have always look forward to my trips in and out of san francisco airport. the environment created by including the locally owned and iconic small businesses, like
5:39 pm
[reading businesses] joined by the new organic cafe, they have always filled me with pride. now known as the company's books has always given my family and myself a familiar place to pass time. as a small business woman, i recognize the economic benefit to the small companies that are able to operate in this high volume area. i'll leave this opportunity has benefited the businesses that are located in these neighborhoods. when i was fortunate enough to fly out of the new terminal on
5:40 pm
the very first day of operation, i looked around me at the small businesses represented, and the most important to the san franciscans employed, i felt it was time that our commission honors the work of the development team. the airport small business affairs office and the revenue department have made to the vitality of san francisco through their efforts to promote representation in the newly island terminal. there is a high business participation rate in demonstrate to travelers across the country in the world that san francisco is committed to its small businesses. his commitment shared by the family is demonstrated throughout the airport and helps
5:41 pm
make san francisco international stand out as a model airport both nationally and internationally. i think you. -- i thank you. >> thank you, commissioners. with me are folks from revenue development and management. there are very heavily evolved in the development of terminal 2. one of the most gratifying things that we do is seek out small and local business that we think might be a good fit at the airport. we are approached by small businesses as well. to meet with and engage and passion of a small business owner, helping them provide information about how to do business with us is very
5:42 pm
rewarding. navy because the heart, many of us can relate to the dream of business ownership, with the of the raw courage that it take to be a small the of the owner. it is very gratifying. the program at the international airport in relief to our visitors a very important impression of the city. 70-5 1/2 to prove a visitor have they're looking for our airport and commission and the airport director are very seriously and sincerely committed to doing business locally to the very greatest extent possible and meeting our small business goals. nine of the 22 stores have local ownership.
5:43 pm
17 it started off at some point a very small. most of them local. some have grown from one store at an airport. one spot now has 30 locations, it started with us that way. the program will realize sales of about $40 million the first year of operation. that will mean rent to the airport and that drove down to a general fund contribution.
