our next retreat. and continue or develop a new logo. in regards to the discussion we had, we have the office of small business and the business assistance center. the office of small business tends to me the name that is communicated in more of a department-department relationship. and then we can move into possibly we have an assistant center at the office of small business. many individuals confuse the small business assistance center with the fba. we needed to figure out a way to distinguish ourselves. part of our direction is that

what the office not to have a government field but more of a business to business field. in the logo. so that businesses would identify and c.s. and identify with us and feel comfortable in approaching the office. there is the overview in section 11. jeff will provide information in terms of the staff. it has been whittled down to one logo. jeff will give us some background. we're having them work with us on a branding for the office. we will be redoing the website. we have to get the lowdown. i will turn it over to you. >> that was a good set up. this is my first time here. you are seeing what i see in terms of the powerpoint

presentation? that is what we have been tasked to do. identity development. we are if rolhave been around fs now. we specialize in doing social marketing. we have been working with the office of small business for three years now. our task was to create a specific identity. and -- >> because we need to have you speaking to the microphone -- can you turn on the microphone by the powerpoint, please? >> i am good over here? i can stay here?

ok. what we were looking at in terms of logo, there is a logo for the small business commission and assistance center but there is not an identity for the office of small business itself. we were trying to create an identity that is halfway between the middle. it is a public facing in today. the small business community. it is something that can house the assistance center and other offerings by the office of small business. our process is to develop a creative brief period to encapsulate what we are trying to accomplish design & multiple solutions. apply the solution to an identity system. we have developed and the creative brief. we have done multiple solutions.

we are finding one solution. after that step we will apply that to other materials. just to give you a brief overview of what we were tasked to do. what we want to do is create a logo that communicate something that when people think of the office of small business, they think it is not just the first place for small business. it serves as a small-business community and the legislative capacity. what we want them to feel as confidence. or connect me to the assistance and resources. who we are talking to is the range of small businesses. this can be in -- we have other organizations throughout the city.

our strategy is our business is for small business. this is a rough encapsulation. we want to position the office so that is that resources for the small community. >> is that -- that is beautiful. our business is your small business. >> we did write that. thank you. we have to variations on the same theme of these once we have narrowed it down to. what we're trying to do is establish this look of connection. we have a mark on the left with the o. then this connected script. it is the place for everything you need is connected. it creates a distinctive mark that is friendly and accessible. we have to variations. one worthy -- where the b is

upper case and then lower case. that is where we are now. we hae to do color aspirations. color will bring our range to it as well. then we will be applying this to any new trifled brochure and we will create a pocket folder. >> commissioner? commissioner o'connor: if you c ould go back and forth so everyone can see. capital and lower case.

of other departments, the planning department, many of the departments that have commissions, they have a logo and not necessarily commission logo. at the next retreat, once we have the office branding identity, we can talk about what we want to do with the logo. >>the next is an action item. the discussions are enough to work with. >> the feedback gives you some sense of direction. >> what we're hearing is looking at the upper case being with the slight curve and from there make a final decision.

of small business and the small business assistance center, update on department programs, update on legislative matters, and make announcements regarding small business activities. >> you will see that in august, the assistant center headed 12% increase over 2010. serving 235 clients. in our september bulletin there are three items i wanted to bring to your attention. we had the presentation on the consolidation for the annual billing with the tax and treasurer is permits and licenses. in a september bulletin we put in a survey for businesses -- is a sample survey to get some feedback. please feel free to for that.

we would like to get as much feedback from many different diverse businesses. also we announced there is a new nonprofit that is in san francisco. there will be doing business in san francisco that offers small business loans. this is eligible to small businesses in operation for two years. one of the things we have seen at the office of small business and the assistance center is the need for some landing, not just for new entrepreneurs but for businesses, existing businesses in the small range amount. we announced a continuing and -- continuance of funding. there are some grants available in other parts of the city. >> i am gratified to see that

program is continuing. i've visited the ocean avenue district and i have seen what those improvements can do. it is a tremendous list -- lift to the littell corridor. -- little corridor. >> i submitted a job description soo we will be able to get that opsitiopositiod soon. due to some great work, really looking into this, we may in

this situation have reduced the impact fee because of removal of some square footage. we will have some bigger picture discussion with the sfmta. that we need to have and some of the triggers, itis a full amount. we are three years in. this can be a deterrent in villing lon-term g-term vacanci. we don't have legislation before

us this month because of the brae says. some items you have heard in the past. and where they are. the limited live performance had at second reading. -- its second reading last week. targeting the time frame from when the mayor would sign the legislation to the 30 day window it needs to sit before becomes law. we are looking at early november before first applications can be taken. then the ada policy, one to let you know that another presentation is coming up with the inner sunset merchants. i attended of presentation which is the certified access specialist institute. interesting presentation and discussion by most of the individuals who were there are

certified inspectors. some of the nuances with the 2010 regulations. the fact there is not enough clarity. it was interesting to hear the questions to. and still no definitive answers. it really speaks to the complications around this issue. and the difficulty for businesses to understand what is required. there received a presentation from the city side. you will have the presentation for working on scheduling business outreach meetings.

and the america's cup organizing committee. we started to schedule those meetings. i will send you the list of business organizations we have set them up with. and october is the month we are doing our business to business presentations and the commissions will be receiving one at the october meeting. also with a consolidation of the annual buildinbilling, the tax d treasurer has -- the presentation was made last week and we will -- will be making a presentation on september 19. just to get the word out and

make sure we are in forming businesses of the plan. then september 19, a week from today, there is a joint meeting with both the commission president and vice president. and our commission. the nondiscrimination for prior arrest conviction records will be doing a presentation on that item and soliciting feedback to the council of district merchants on september 19. since that is something the commission has received a presentation on, i wanted to keep you apprised of the business organizations they are reaching out to to get input from. i mentioned last month there is a health service master plan task force that the office as part of. there is a public meeting

scheduled on september 22. i will send you the details and the information that is covered that will be presented. what this is is to take a look at providing health services in relationship to a planning -- and adding a planning perspective overlapping providing health services. there is one meeting and that is what was covered. well, probably soon. i do not have the details right now. also i want to make mt. that

commissioner raley will speak to this. we have been advised by yvonne yee who introduced herself, she is the western region policy advocate. there is some food policy issues coming down that have some interesting implications. commissioner reilly will speak more about that meeting. in terms of calendar items, the merchant meeting is happening on september 19. and then there is their annual gala on october 27. make sure you save the day. >> that completes your report but? >> i almost forgot.

i did not put this in your report. small business leaders have come together to develop a conference in the winter period february 2012 to develop an agenda. a list of items to present to our city elected officials in terms of small business priorities to be focused and worked on. commissioner reilly has been invited to be on the committee and help with business outrage. i know commissioner dooley has expressed interest in being on it as well. >> commissioner adams. commissioner adams: i want to thank the director for coming

13a, legislative and policy committee report, allowing the chair to report on recent committee activities and make announcements. >> we have nothing to report that has not been in front ob. discussion and possible action to form an ad hoc committee to meet with members of the planning commission and other persons to discuss formal retail related matters. >> in preparation with the planning commission, if from that meeting will want to initiate one of the topics that will be discussed is taking a look at formula retail. and so the legislation and policy committee has selected a subcommittee. i advise that we affirm the

recommendation. so the meeting should be scheduled relatively sen. if that is the fashion that will be taken that there is subcommittees' developed to start your review and analyze different topics. the subcommittee could not have to wait until after our october meeting to have its first meeting. as the chair for the committee -- >> we discussed having a couple people from our commission be on the ad hoc committee. and i would like to move that forward in terms of do we want to discuss the makeup of that committee? president o'brien: i anticipate

analyze where we're at right now, or is there a specific, a new direction we want to go with this? >> i think at this point, the direction is not specifically been identified. there has been discussion at the planning commission and this commission. the criteria at the planning commission uses for formula retail needs to be re-analyzed and see if there needs to be changes, modifications, updates. any new criteria. both commissions basically come together and analyze and perhaps come together with new proposals on what that would be. that is yet to be determined. >> just to clarify, the ad hoc committee is set to work with
