permanent name change for the high school to john o'connell high school. i need a motion and a second. thank you. this item is going to be referred to buildings and grounds. item r, none. item s, board members report on the school district select committee. commissioner fewer or norton? >> we heard a report about the summer program at the candlestick shipyard benefit agreement. it was very successful. it served many of our ninth graders with a very high rate to its participation and success.

>> thank you. a report from the budget and business commission? commissioner fewer: the budget and business committee met on october 27. we heard an update on the state's budget, are there any updates about this budget? i think it was pretty much the same we have gotten. >> yes, it was pretty consistent with previous reports. staff gave an update about state revenue collection. the key question is whether the state will project there will be a large enough shortfall compared to the assumptions for this year to create midyear

cuts. that is the major question. we have more information that has come in a sense which we -- come in sinse which we look forward to reporting. >> i believe that at the board meeting there was a question about the trigger being pulled and whether not transportation was included. would you mind reporting on that? >> but question was, after the 2 billion mark is reached, does that trigger an all at once cut to statewide funding for transportation? the answer appears to be yes. >> we also had a budget overview

of the department and we looked at a couple of budgets. our next meeting will be held on tuesday, november 29 which is different than our regularly scheduled meeting which is usually on a thursday. this will be on a tuesday evening at 5:30 in the afternoon. >> a report from the curriculum. commissioner norton? commissioner norton: we met on november 7. we heard three informational items. the first was a report of the academic and professionals on the continuing implementation. there has been a lot of the painstaking, thankless work to get all of the catalog corrected and clean. they gave us an update on that

and it is really not find work but really important and they have made great progress. we also heard a report from richard and the principle of mission high school on the early warning indicators. you may recall we discussed in these last year. we can predict with good certainty when a student has poor attendance and a poor grade point average in the eighth grade, those students are more likely to not complete high school. the question that we asked was, what are we doing with this knowledge now that we can pinpoint these students? what we doing to support them and a change that predictive power? we got an interesting report. i believe all board members got this chart which shows the% of students who received a d or an

f. having a gpa of 2.0 or less. it invites some study. i want to commend mission for all of the support they have put in place. they have done a wonderful job. partly through the help of the money which we know we do not have it all of our high schools. there are some promising practices. i want to commend them for their work. we heard a report from kevin true it and staff about school health education. we got an overview of all the different efforts of the department. some alarming information about our follow through on board

policy. it seems like we are not following our own policy and giving students required health education according to board policy. our overall health education policy needs to be updated to reflect changes in the standards. the committee did ask that we begin to look at that and update those standards. but also that we need to look at why students and don't seem to be receiving the required lessons for things like hiv awareness. anything you can think of that is connected to health. it requires 20 health lessons and only 11% teachers taught

education lessons during the 2010 school year. that is a problem. we need to continue to monitor that. the committee will meet again on december 5. that is the kickoff to the celebration and the focus. they've focus will be special education a year after our review. what still needs to be done. it will be augmented and invite everyone to attend. >> i have a question. in regards to the chart, i was looking at it but i did not understand it, especially the last column of each year. it would indicate that there is a% of the students sit have to indicators.

that did not make sense to me. >> what the chart is showing you a, a district-wide, the percentage of students who received a d or f, dropped by 13%. in comparing year over year 2010 obverses 2011, the percentage of students receiving an grade in math course who had those indicators dropped by 2%. it was a little bit complicated. if you still have questions, he is the best person to explain it. not me. that is how i am understand it. you can see this some schools, commission made it -- in 2010,

for example, 75% of students who had a gpa of 2.0, 75% of them received a d or f. when you look again into that in 2011, and it dropped to 46%. in other words, the students who still had the indicators, the red flags for the low gpa and the spotty attendance rate got a much better grades of the following year because mission had put the supports in place. >> other comments? any other announcements? commissioner murase: 3

announcements. on october 27, the district attorney's office collaborated on a town hall at marina middle school. unfortunately it was not well attended but i urge parents to take a look at the common sense and media website. it has a lot of great information for families about cyber bling -- bullying and social media. just a shout out to be imagine bus project. they held a fund-raiser on november 3. they do work with the students, the juvenile justice center, malcolm x, bringing art to those classrooms. we appreciate their efforts in supporting our students. finally, this friday the friends of the mission campus are having

a celebration with sylvia mendez. there will be a reception at that campus of city college from 5:30 to 7:30. i did not know this history about mendez being a six year old in an orange county public school who was denied admission before the brown vs. board of education decision. has the sense left a legacy of desegregation throughout the country. there was a resolution that mary hernandez, when she was serving on this board, get together on the anniversary of the court victory. commissioner fewer: i also

want to know. you put out your picture and you put your face is side-by-side. december 10 at 6:00 p.m. >> i attended the equity summit in detroit, michigan. it was interesting. it was focused on poverty and community development. we have been trying to add the element of education in to those conversations. i want to congratulate the bay area fine -- science festival. it was fantastic and putting that together. they had their final -- 20,000 kids and their families at at&t park. i wanted to congratulate you speakers who celebrated their anniversary. a partner with us as well. and richard, one of our

teachers. he has the coral collaborative project which is our public schools and private schools, they have a chorus. they were invited to sing at the tree lighting ceremony in washington, d.c. they will be going to d.c. next month. we are fundraising for them. any other? commissioner yee: i wanted to congratulate all of the schools and communities that participated in the student enrollment fair. it was attended by thousands of people. it was packed. >> that was a terrific event. i know that all of the teachers and parents came out on a

saturday. i also wanted to point out there was a packet put together for you. thank you for making this effort to ensure that our families and know that john o'connell is one of our high schools. and the great things that going on over there. he has distributed quite a few disks to the eighth grade families. we have teachers they have redesigned call the o.c., which are really cute. thank you for all of the efforts you're putting in to promote it john o'connell. we are also going to have a ceremony, a brooding cutting for the new facility -- ribbon cutting for the new facility.

>> in 1986, my son was two, and i decided i would like to go over the story of the velveteen rabbit, mind you i had never read it myself as a child. i only heard it as a mother. my first-time hearing it was a bedtime story recording. it was through that that i found the theme and determined how it was going to produce this story. it was through listening to it. when a first mated, i really did watch my son, because i took him to live performances as soon as six months old. he loved it when someone was on the stage. he loved it when somebody was reading to him, the language. >> there was once a velveteen rabbit. >> usually when the bunny first

comes out ago, ah, the rabbit. i think kids can relate to it. and they built love nana. nana is the man at all figure in the show, and she represents stern love. the ferry is also played by the same person. -- the fairy is played by the same person. it is like the love you have for your first child. pure love. >> i think nature is a beautiful thing. all the wild rabbits come from nature. i like that. i think nature is mysterious, a beautiful, and not something our kids get very much these days. ♪

>> there is fantastical spectacle these days because of computers and films. i feel that in a live performance, being pared down, you can be more successful you can ask everybody to buy into the world you're in. if it is a simple world, they will buy into it, as long as the world is consistent that you have onstage. in some ways, i also want that message for kids. the world does not have to be spectacle. the world can be about relationships, how you feel, and having fun and taking them seriously. and not about being blown away. >> what is real, asked the rabbit one day. >> it is a thing that happens to you when a child loves you for a long, long time. >> i think it is a success

because, for the most part, if you are 3 or 7 years old, you sit in the sea, and the kids are engaged. they laugh and ask questions but that is part of the success. i think the fact that we tour and do it here and still have audiences says it is a lasting. i really want to say that it is lasting is because of the story is a gentle story. if it was just ok, it would not have lasted this long. i have had people come up to me and say that was the first dance show i ever saw and that is why i am a choreographer today. i have had people come back after being in the shows and come back to see it when they're 20 and 23 years old. little kids and people in their 50s and 60s tell me how much they love it. and they come back more than

stick -- authentic, and it looks terrific. congratulations to staff. the schwab cup was a huge excess -- success. another cuda's to staff. one professional golfers tell you that the course is in pristine condition, you can take that to the bank. for municipal course, that is a real plus. so congratulations to staff and everybody involved. as many of you know, the last year, we had a reorganization of the san francisco park council, park trust, and park alliance. we're honored to have two new and distinguished staff and board member to that organization here. i would like to give them a chance to say a few words to the right thing this is a significant step forward in trying to coordinate
