5:00 am
then you know what dignity means. i would like to thank st. anthony's for this opportunity. and geronimo and i look forward to the new dining room with open minds and open -- open minds and open hearts. thank you. [applause] >> i like that no excuses motto. that is a good one. thank you. over the years, and i think i have heard it today, many people, when they come here, they referred to it as sacred space or holy ground. people from different backgrounds come together, and like kathy and kevin a share, they share a meal. together, we find our common humanity. that is what really binds us together and transforms us for the better.
5:01 am
and i think that there is no greater model for that kind of service, that dedication and devotion to bringing that, and humanity to the fore than our franciscan friars who are responsible for funding at st. anthony foundation. they have given san francisco and st. anthony's dining room a place where all are welcome just as they are. as we mark this special day for st. anthony's, i now invite father john harden, now the provincial for the order and the president of our board of trustees. father john. [applause] >> ok, linda, you can start your clock to see how long it is going to take. [laughs] before i start crying. christina olague is here with us, and other supervisor just came in.
5:02 am
[applause] 26 years ago, this was my room right here. and i had the privilege of -- i hope uyo -- i hope you're not taking me, because you can cut it. i was living here with father tom was the little that i know when i was living with father alfred that i would be following in his sandals, not his footsteps. i had so many wonderful conversations. this was a genius, and he had more ideas than carter had pills. his nephew joe is with us today, and he can vouch for that. his model was you visualize, organize, dubie dies, and supervise. i said, then you agonize. he said, no, you never agonize.
5:03 am
and down through the years now as we are at this kind of bittersweet moment, i was down in the dining room and associated with the st. anthony said different levels of ministry and a leadership for 16, 17 years. and i was down there today and -- this is a funky old building, you know? i am going to miss that. building something new is wonderful, because i think it shows that we believe in the dignity and respect of every individual the comes to st. anthony's. but there is just something about those walls down there. i had a privilege to talk to volunteers and ask them what they were going to be taking
5:04 am
across the street in the temporary dining room. they always talked about dignity and respect, hope and compassion and love. i remember one of our former client safety servicers, richard, and he says, we're going to let you until you learn to love yourself. and that is what st. anthony's does in spades. i am just looking forward to this. father alfred wanted to end world hunger in 2000. it was an ambitious bill and did not happen. unfortunately, we're serving more people every day. but i think what people here in this room and so many people that will see the news coverage, not only in san francisco that literally a around the world, we will be here to help stop poverty and homelessness and hunger. it is so important that we have to do our part, not only to continue to serve meals with dignity and respect, but to wipe
5:05 am
out hunger. it is so important to the i am so excited about shari's leadership. i cannot have left the foundation in better hands. she has hit the ground running, and i look forward to seeing this new building come up. unfortunately, i might be complaining, because i live right next door. larry, if you could keep the noise down when you're building, i would really appreciate it. or ed least cut it off so i can sleep at night. god bless you all and thank you for coming. [applause] >> again, i want to make sure that we recognize the fire chief. hopefully we have not exceeded the number of people in our space. [laughter] and i know we have a member from the police chief's office as well. thank you for joining us today.
5:06 am
one of the things i also want to make sure is that getting all of this work done takes a lot of hands, a lot of people working together. i want to acknowledge suzanne sw vice-presidentift, of our board. [applause] and then i want to also ask all of the staff who are here to please raise your hands, because day in and day out, raise them high. [applause] day in and day out, they're the ones that are truly making sure that everything runs very smoothly and gets done, and we cannot do it by ourselves. this is truly a team effort. we talked a lot about teens and putting together a winning team. certainly, this is a winning
5:07 am
team in st. anthony's. as we wrap up our press conference today, i just want to display for you, this is our final tourre for service today. and then it will go on display. this will be the inaugural tray for our new dining room at st. anthony's in 2014. meantime, we will fill it with that final $5 million for the capital campaign. off we go. [applause] thank you. >> for those of you who would like the opportunity --
5:08 am
>> good morning and welcome to this groundbreaking event for our new home at pac 12 studious. i am the president of pac 12 enterprises. we are thrilled to get this construction project rolling. pac 12 enterprises is a subsidiary of pac 12 conference and is home to aover 1200 employees. we will be launching one national television network, six regional television networks, and an additional network. as we have announced previously,
5:09 am
we have distribution agreements with four of the most powerful cable companies in the cable industry. including comcast, time warner, cox, and brighthouse. if you live in the bay area, we will be part of your basic cable package with comcast. i would like to acknowledge and thank our new neighbor, the leader of comcast sportsnet. for his help in this process. when you live in a neighborhood, some neighbors swap eggs for making cookies. we will be swapping television cameras with ted's group. as part of our programming mix, we will televised 850 live sporting events across our 12 campuses each year. that does not include hundreds more that we will eventually
5:10 am
strain on our digital network. our event mix will include 34 football games, over 125 men's basketball games, over 40 women's basketball games, and another 650 olympic sports events which our conference dominates on an annual basis. in fact, the pac 12 has won several competitive championships. what is most gratifying of all, our dynamic student athletes in all sports will be given the increased national exposure they so richly deserved. speaking of athletes, we have quite a list of former pac 12 star athletes and coaches and i will introduce them in a moment. first, we would not be standing here today if it was not for the support of mayor ed lee. aside from the vision he has for bringing technology and entertainment companies to san
5:11 am
francisco, it does not hurt that he has a law degree from cal, so he is a pac 12 guy. it is my pleasure to introduce mayor ed lee. [applause] >> good morning, everyone. this is exciting. the most exciting thing is that san francisco is doing all the right things to signal that we want to make sure people know though role of technology is our future. it is a big part of our present in terms of business, but the way that we do and think. so when gary and larry met with me a few months ago, we talked about the need for speed. when you look at all these athletes here, they move in their own sports with a great indeliberate speed. i wanted to show them as much as
5:12 am
to gary and larry we could move with speed as well to complement the kind of athleticism our stars are representing. san francisco has been very fortunate. we have had this past year the cal bears play at at&t part. we have had the higfight hunger bowl. we want to make sure that that content of these athletes gets distributed as widely as possible and that is why when i heard the interest of the pac 12 to locate their media center here, we jumped on it. with all the innovative we have here, it would be a very short time that that media distribution could be blended with all the thousands of possible applications to get the content out into every possible mode and for our athletes
5:13 am
present in the -- and in the future, it would be great for them. they could be viewed at people at their comfort but at their most exciting than is possible. we're here not only to signal our support. we know that this will be over 125 jobs by the end of the year. they told us that if the city is interested, we have got to start, they have to be able to broadcast by august. we went into that speed mode, that final two-minute drill to make sure we're able to get this thing started right away. we are excited here. this media center is all about that land. -- blend. we can distinguish here and what would have happened if it was the los angeles region and we're happy they chose here because this is our future. i believe it is the future of sports content delivery throughout the west coast and the world.
5:14 am
we're glad to make sure they're not only west coast distribution, we think with your media center, it will be worldwide distribution. that is where we want to be. we want to make sure the media center has a worldwide ability and to match up the talent we have here. thank you. i am so happy to start drilling holes and building new walls. congratulations to all of us working together. larry as well and to all the athletes here. i may be the shortest guy here but i move pretty fast, too. thank you. [applause] >> larry scott came to the pac 12 with a plan and vision to reenergize the conference and lift it to new heights. after an expansion, negotiating and new blockbuster television
5:15 am
agreement with fox and espn that guaranteed national exposure, he announced his vision for pac 12 enterprises which is being realized here today. it is almost like giving birth, isn't it? it is my pleasure to introduce larry scott. [applause] >> thanks very much. great to see such a terrific turnout today. this is such an exciting moment in the history of the pac 12 conference. on behalf all 12 universities and our presidents and chancellors that guide the conference as our board of directors, i want to thank everyone who has been part of the process to bring us here today. this is truly a seminal moment for the conference. it is an exciting time in college sports in general. there is no more exciting place to be that in the pac 12. we have a dynamic and bold
5:16 am
vision for college sports and the future of our conference. it is an exciting time for television and technology in general. our conference aims to be not just a leader in college sports, but also leading the way in terms of the future of content and distribution through many different technologies. and launching seven networks in august as opposed to one and all that will follow from that is an indication of a new model. we look at our conference as in the corridor of innovation out here on the west coast. when you look at our schools, you look at the markets we're in, the entertainment capital of the world in los angeles, technology capital of the world in the bay area, we could not think of a better place to be to signal our intentions, a signal what is special and unique about our universities that to be here in san francisco. i cannot overstate the significance of this to our
5:17 am
schools and to the student athletes. as gary mentioned, our conference has unprecedented said -- success over sports having one more championships than any other. what it means to the athletes, alumni, and fans is amazing. every football game and every men's basketball game will be broadcast on television nationally either through espn and fox or through the pac 12 networks. equally significant, if n the oc sports events that will be telecast. far more than any conference has had on television. what that will mean to our student athletes for the best of the best in what they do to be up to be seen by their families, to fall by passionate -- followed by a passionate fans will get our conference, the
5:18 am
advantages going forward. there's a lot of excitement, a lot of buzz about what this will mean for our conference and college sports. a lot of people to thank for bringing this to reality. i want to commend gary stevenson, the president of pac 12 and prizes for the amazing team he is putting together to bring this to realization and have this be a great success for schools and to all parties that are working with him and especially to mayor lee, who has been such a great visionary and advocate for this city and in such a great facilitator. the city has overachieved on everything. we are on schedule and they are thrilled we -- with the partnership will have with the city to show cash -- showcase all that is new and innovative. thank you for your support. it is a historic day for the pac 12 conference and we're excited about the future.
5:19 am
[applause] >> we started this process in locating and designing a building in september. i would like to introduce ed graham. thanks for your guidance in helping find this property. as you can imagine, we scoured the bay area up and down and when we came to this building and we were introduced to the owner of this building, we knew along with the mayor and his team that kilroy and kilroy realty and their team were the partners for us. it helps that he is a usc graduate. i would like you to introduce you to john kilroy, the owner of this building. >> thanks rog.
5:20 am
it is a terrific day. on behalf of my colleagues and our shareholders, i welcome you and your team and you're growing employee group to this building. it is not quite finished yet but it is going to be a terrific facility. as the landlord, where the largest provider of technology and media space in san francisco and elsewhere, and down the coast. it is great to deal with people in media. there are a lot of fun and exciting. in this case, pac 12 and what they represent, the immense following they have, this is the most special tenet we have had. i welcome you to this building. we will be great landlords. thank you on behalf of our organization for all you have done. all the best. [applause]
