8:00 am
you have two minutes to make your comments. >> president of the board, hon. board members. thank you for giving me this opportunity to speak. in the fall of 2005, when i was completing my masters at san jose state, i was recruited by the school district to work as a librarian at presidio middle
8:01 am
school. previously i thought -- i taught at city college of san francisco. a surprising thing happened. i fell in love with middle school students. since then, i don't want to work with anything but middle school students. i showed some of the things that may be a highly qualified teacher and extraordinary librarian. i have been published in teacher librarian magazine. the second letter after the article she said that she wants me to continue the high level of
8:02 am
engagement i managed to achieve through this program. it was an innovative program that was a very effective especially for special education kids and english language learners. when cuts were made and i needed a full-time job, i moved to hoover. i began the first spanish english but cut out there -- but club. my students do not want to lose me. >> and i'm a staff wrapped and
8:03 am
there are a couple of non- reelected people who will be speaking before you tonight. it's hard for someone like me to watch every year. this process allows some of our teachers to be taken out by this project -- the process in an irresponsible manner without any appeal this is the project of the principal -- the principle
8:04 am
is concerned about his budget and wants to cut the position from one. 02 0.6. instead of using the process and the contract, he has decided to use the process and kicked her out of the district instead of going through a responsible process like an administrator should. he is being taken out by an irresponsible and illustrator who doesn't like the fact he is going on to advocate for his students. despite the fact his boss --
8:05 am
they have to let everybody know this is absolutely wrong. thank you. i am an itinerant speech language pathologist and i'm here to speak on behalf of france's laney. i have been fortunate to work with a handful of really dedicated and skilled resource teachers. he is knowledgeable of special education law and meticulous about -- a strong advocate for families and -- very knowledgeable about developing effective behavior plans and
8:06 am
most of all he is a good teacher who developed a strong rapport with his students, helping to narrow the achievement gap. i was shocked and disappointed to learn he had been recommended for non-reelection. i hope the board will not accept this recommendation. it would be a huge loss if he was not reelected. it's a really strong statement that the special-education team members to work most closely with them are all here tonight to support him. i brought with me letters of recommendation from the special education coordinated leader as well as the principal. i really hate public speaking and for me to be here tonight addressing year -- thank you. [applause] >> it good evening.
8:07 am
i'm at mother of a special kit. my i have to be his voice so that is why i am here. my child has a big challenge. with any change when he's -- when he was trapped at training. he was always there for help. he was a had a little bit. i am happy with all the changes he made for him. i do not understand why the system is doing anything.
8:08 am
they said someone has to be with him all the time. nobody was with him. coaster with her and what is the person who is with him in charge. who takes this decision. i think it is not fair for me. it is not for him. that is why it is a legal document. rajoy have to do for you following day -- what do i have to do for you following dathe iep? that is not her kid, it is my kid and i am here for him. whenever he needs me i will be here. i can see here is in
8:09 am
kindergarten. we get surprised about him. sometimes we think he's not going to make it. he is able to do more than we think. thanks for listening. [applause] thank you. >> thank you. >> good evening. [speaking spanish] i came here to support professor lenny. [speaking spanish] i have seen how he that for the
8:10 am
kids at carmichael. i've seen his hard work. to me he is a great teacher. [speaking spanish] >> i do not find a fair he should be given a pink slip. he has been great with my kids. in this girl who was going to graduate, he has done a fantastic job with her.
8:11 am
[speaking spanish] >> has been working -- he has been working, he works well with the other teacher. the teacher benji and i get sad when i see someone is going to be dismissed while he is a good teacher. i am proud of mr. lenny. thank you. >> thank you. >> i am a school psychologist in the district. i started 23 years ago this month. i have been -- worked in many schools and worked in several special projects. i have had the good fortune of
8:12 am
working with many companies, created, talented educators. administrators as well as the paraprofessionals and teachers and school psychologists and on. francis is one of them. i met him in august 2010, the beginning of last school year. and he was brought in on a difficult situation. he followed someone. she left a complete mess. he had to spend a good deal of last school year trying to clean up the mess. a number of iep's were done incorrectly. i watched france's work on that and clean that up while he
8:13 am
continued his regular duties. i found him to be very confident. he is very conscientious. he communicates well. he is organized. once he caught that up, he stayed on timeline for the iep's this whole time. a year ago he got -- he had a very good evaluation. i forget what the term was. it was outstanding. that was appropriate. it is still appropriate in my opinion. the thing that has changed is frances started this school year without any paraprofessional. he has done a lot of trying to cover things and catch up in spite of that lack of resource. i think the difference this year is he has not been able to -- he has advocated for the students and that has been his downfall. that is why he is not reelected.
8:14 am
we should reconsider. he is a valuable employee. we should keep him. [applause] >> thank you. >> item g, consent calendar. is there motion and second? >> second. >> any items withdrawn or corrected? >> we have one item we would like to withdraw. it is on page 68, item three f. >> ok. any items removed by the board from first reading? any items severed by the board or the superintendent for discussion and vote tonight? seeing none. roll call took place under
8:15 am
section o. board members proposal, and then tonight. item j, request to speak or guarding general matters. we have said that. -- cynthia. and cassandra sweet, are you here? press the button right there. >> good evening. i am a graduate student pursuing a master's in public health. i'm here to talk about pe. for the last ten months have been turning with -- i have been
8:16 am
interning with the san francisco department of public health. our main focus -- the main focus of my master's if this -- this is. last week a study showed most district elementary schools are not receiving adequate pe. as an intern with the pe advocates i have had the privilege of participating in some of the dialogue with school administrators, principles, and teachers. i would like to express my gratitude to them. to put more focus on improving the. scores of studies have shown physical activity helps to improve cognitive function, concentration, and classroom behavior and may ultimately contribute to closing the new achievement gap in many of our schools. nahyan only should p happen because it is mandated by the state, but because it provides regular physical activity to children who might otherwise not
8:17 am
get any. in many neighborhoods it is not safe for children to play outdoors and many families lack the resources for after-school physical activity classes. among the many reasons it is sold important, p levels the playing field and gives all children equitable access to quality physical activity and skills instruction. i want to thank you for listening to me and i encourage you to continue supporting the administration as it continues their effort to improve and -- in power -- improve pe in our elementary schools. >> good evening. i am a parent of a child whose fifth birthday is in november. i'm here tonight as i was at your last meeting to ask you to reverse your decision of january 26 to abandon the transitional
8:18 am
kindergarten program and ask that you offer your original program. if you cannot or will not do that, i and other parents in my position ask that you allow the district to approve waivers for our children said the can enroll in regular kindergarten in the fall. i think the plan you posted on the district website on january 6 is inadequate, inconsiderate, and unfair. will pay taxes here and we want access to high-quality education for our children but you're trying warwick -- your january 26 decision creates winners and losers among our district youngest students. we think it is this regard to your responsibility to serve the people of san francisco in the most equitable way. some of our parents have tried to make an appointment to speak with you, but your office has
8:19 am
not return telephone calls. i and other parents have sent letters to every member of the board. so far we have heard back from two members and we appreciate those numbers taking the time to research bond. -- to respond. none of the other members have responded. we would like transparency and we think it is not too much to ask. a lot of us are parents with children, older children who are in school. we spend a lot of our time fundraising for schools. that is our top priority. every day. i ask that you please grant us an opportunity to talk. we have to reach an understanding about what you might be prepared to do to alleviate this difficult situation you put us in. we understand the state budget problem, this mountainous
8:20 am
problem. we figure you are doing a great job but we would like to talk with you about this issue. >> i have a fairly large group for the next item which would be addressing some issues at the middle school. martin luther king. what i will do is we have been here before. i am wondering, are you here, do you know each other? are you going to be on the same issue? i will call your name. you will have to make your decision. i will give you a total of 13 minutes for your group to speak. it is one metopes but -- one minute apace because there is
8:21 am
quite a few of view. i will call your name. make sure that you are going to cover all the issues you want to cover. the first person. [reading names]
8:22 am
will give you a second to hull and find out how we will do this. you have 15 minutes total. it is less than a minute each. is that the total group?
8:23 am
go ahead antiguan minutes apiece. come on up. press the button. >> good evening. i am here to support the school of martin luther king. my son is going over there. i have a lot of nieces and nephews that are going over there. i am here. the teachers and a counselor and security are there. they're doing a good job. it is very good. their work very hard and my problem, we need a good principle over there.
8:24 am
she's supposed to take me inside her office and we have a meeting. we're talking outside. i see some parents, they complain about that, too. another thing, she forced my son to write down a report. they're supposed to call the parents first. to find out what is going on. that is not right. another thing, every time i come to meeting, she is supposed to be over there. she is the head of the school. she is the principal. no counselor or teacher thinks like that. another thing over there and i see this, they need more over there. there is no way you play teacher
8:25 am
or counselor and you go outside and watch the kids at the bus stop. these people have to pay double pay. thank you. [applause] >> i am the dean at martin luther king middle school. in this month's california educators there was an article. what makes good school leadership? every school employee knows that a principal can either create a dynamic learning environment or staff feels -- where staff feels valued at filled or makes life extremely difficult for teachers and classified staff. that is what we have with our administrators. [applause] >> my name is dr. karen green, i am a counselor at mlk's.
8:26 am
the goal of the department is to help the children make this school a better place. all the staff at mlk helps improve the quality of life. all the members of the counseling department spent far more hours at school than the contract calls for. the department model is, do the best job possible the matter how long and how much effort is required. the counseling department is a cohesive unit that works well together. in the administrative standard, stender derica alamance 5, counsellors are smokinspoken toa demeaning matter. i know you will be passed off with me if you miss lunch, etc.. it is our trace and we're told, i know who your report to order you doing? martin luther king counseling department wants to be treated
8:27 am
with respect. we're highly educated professionals. masters and doctorate levels. [applause] >> security at mlk. one minute. our task is to motivate and give our students tools and create -- the students are being let down. they're allowed to disrupt the learning process by asserting their will and actions with no accountability. it starts by ignoring the uniform policy. the threatening and challenging of adults without admonishment which grows into actual physical actions. as example, we have responsibilities to exercise good character and values. not by falsifying reports,
8:28 am
documents or allowing actions to occur unchecked until it accumulates into a serious incident. being here today, my wishes administration reversed their tactics of authoritarianism and work with us as adults so we can become an excellent free school where students can get an education in a fair and equitable manner. [applause] >> good evening. i am a teacher at martin luther king. i just questioned the selection process for administrators at our school. this is our fifth set as administrators. in the last five years i've been there. are you as a board being duped by associate superintendent to withhold information on administrators that are being assigned to martin luther king? you know because it was
8:29 am
reported at the last board meeting that you are not provided all the information necessary to make an informed decision whether or not to re- elect an assigned administrator to martin luther king. run with the king is a public school. public schools require community participation. instead, we have an exclusionary regime. like all regimes, this is not encouraged -- and dissent is not encouraged. there is retaliation for independent thinking and support of our students and parents. please return the community, the school, mar and live the king to the community. thank you.
