or equitable. the other thing the other thing i read is that we should be holding people accountable. i want to hold the board accountable for providing a proper, transitional kindergarten program. it seems as though sfusd is looking for an excuse not to provide a program. let's face the factory is still law, it is reality. -- let's face the facts. it is still law, it is reality. we are talking about 300-400 school kids who will be impacted this year. if you project those numbers, it will be close to 1000 school kids in three years. we need a proper program. when a program that has some thought put into it. a program that does not change every five minutes. we need sfusd to stop cherry
5:31 am
picking and choosing the plate -- the pieces of information they want to choose to change the course. it is a law. i saw the pieces of paper that went around. you are choosing the government's proposal. if you waited a couple of days, you would have seen the response from senators. you have got to look at all of the facts. you have to take a balanced view rather than choosing which pieces of information you enact -- you act upon an spreading misinformation to parents. giving parents two options at the far southeast corner of the city is not an option for most people. i thank you very -- i thank you. [applause] president yee: the next group of speakers are coming from martin luther king. come on up to the podium.
5:32 am
there are quite a few of you. i will give you one minute each. toby cain? mark murray, laura hurley, karen green, lanetta spears, paul, doris, james, nancy, maggie, sandy, sabrina, maurice, dan --
5:33 am
diana, ms. coleman, ms. flores, sherry, david, sataro, patricia, and brandy. our most of the people here? >> is it on? president yee: is it outside somewhere? do you know? go ahead. or on.
5:34 am
-- hold on. we will give you two minutes instead of once. >> and you ask us to get involved with our kids' education grid when we do, our voices are totally ignored. the only choice that we see seems to think is racism. what we ask for at our school, what we elect is ignored. they put in their personal -- they put their personal agendas in front of our kids' education. believe it or not, there are some decent black and latino families in 92114 who would like to see our kids educated and attend college. in the over 40 years i have been a student, parent, grandparent,
5:35 am
to have a principal and vice principal go around and hand out pink slips to teachers that are doing their jobs. there are not doing their job because one teacher does not want to teach three kids that are disrupting the entire classroom in order to teach 20 more kids. one teacher who is doing her job excellent is not being asked to come back because she voices your opinion? one teacher who has the admiration and respect of all of the parents and his peers is not the ast to combat. i think that is a shame when principles and vice principals are allowed to do this and walk away laughing and snickering. what is that? that is highly unacceptable. ms. cook broader test store --
5:36 am
her task scores of. -- her test scores up. my kid has struggled in math. now he is teaching me the pythagorean theorem. he is in the honor roll because of ms. germer and ms. cook. to have them not come back is unacceptable. your kids are in college and private schools. let ours get there. let us have an opportunity to put our kids in college so that they can go somewhere. 94124 is tired of teachers and administration coming into the neighborhood to get a paycheck. it has been going on for too long. we are tired of our voices not being heard. let them have a say. listen to our voices. we are tired of being ignored. we know that this is going to be
5:37 am
swept under the -- president yee: excuse me. you have had your two minutes and you went over. there are other people who want to voice their opinion also. we have to be respectful of their time too. >> my name is mark murray and i am a seventh grade teacher at mlk. i'm here to ask that the non- reelection of those teachers be rescinded. we are an understaffed schools. normally, we have one quarter to one-third of our staff leave each year. how can you fire the teachers that had highly satisfactory evaluations.
5:38 am
how can you mentor these teachers and fire them because they're not improving quickly enough? all four of these teachers worked there butts off for these students and are well-respected and. now we find out we may lay off a higher percentage of our remaining faculty because, despite the fact that we have training, we are not in the zone so we do not get special treatment. put that together with the people who are leaving and retiring because of the atmosphere and we could be looking at 50% turnover for next year. that sounds like the turnaround model only we did not earn it. i am just wondering if something can be done about this. i really hope it can. as the previous speaker already said, we are feeling really ignored right now. [applause]
5:39 am
>> my name is laura early. i am the dean at martin luther king middle school. i am going to quote from this, from a restorative practitioners workshop, "schools are made up of relationships, interactions among people." we do not have this with our current administrative staffs. most of our students do not even know who the principle is, let alone her name and the same goes for the vice principal. [applause] >> my name is dr. karen green. i am a counselor at mlk. i am speaking on behalf of the counseling department. the goal of the counseling
5:40 am
department is to help children make the school better and give the children positive experiences. we are trying to improve the quality of life. the counseling department is made up of dedicated educational professionals with many years of experience. i have 15. all members of the counseling department at -- spend far more hours of school than the contract calls for. we do the best job possible no matter how long or how much effort is required. we go above and beyond the call of duty. we work in the best interest of the children. the bullying from the administration has gotten worse since we have spoken. this is what we are told. informing is not the same as intervention. i know who you report to, but what are you doing? we constantly have to justify what we do. why are you telling me and not another counselor? being thrown off about another incident, i finally walked off in frustration.
5:41 am
taking a few extra minutes to help a teacher and i was constantly radioed. if i leave the counseling office, i am radioed. one time, i was attempting to mediate between students and i was radioed constantly to. i did not bring my radio. i finally was called out of the meeting and asked what i was doing. we are here for the best interest of the children. [applause] >> my name is david williams. i am a resource specialist. i work at martin luther king. i have worked there for 20 years. [applause] this year, i've been working with one of the teachers that has been asked not to come back. that is the phrase. this teacher has an excellent rapport with the students. she has a very good classroom
5:42 am
control. her lesson plans are well done and well-executed. this teacher is not even around anymore because she was basically pushed out of the school and i am left with a dedicated substitute trying to put the classroom back together. whatever standards the administration is using to non- renew people, i cannot understand what kind of standards would get this person and non-renewal. it is complete idiocy. thank you. [applause] >> my name is brandy. i think that our principal should not fire at ms. germer and ms. cook because they are
5:43 am
good teachers and they tell me get my grades up when they are low. i think that the principal should get fired because she is not doing her job. she yells as students who are not doing anything and she sat on a student to restrain her, which was not necessary or acceptable to me. that is it. [applause] >> my name is patricia. i attend martin luther king middle school. this is must third year there. i came here to save my teachers. on january 29, i was heard by the principal just for laughing in class. the principle to me into the counselor's office and told me she was going to search me so i told her that i did not have marijuana on me because that is what she thought i had. she refused to listen.
5:44 am
when i told her i did not want her to search me because she has no reason because my eyes were not ready and i did not smell like marijuana, she said if i did, she would call the police and it would do a full body search. i said ok and she looked in my backpack. she did not find anything and i felt -- i felt very uncomfortable because i wanted to be treated like a student and not a criminal. [applause] >> i am james carey -- james. you have a label our school i hard to sell school. we need these teachers to return next year. they represent the best and brightest of our faculty. one a former businesswoman, one a former lawyer, won a future doctor, and won an experienced teacher who chose to come to our school to teach our students to be successful learners.
5:45 am
the volunteer their mornings, lunchtimes, even after school to work with students. they should not be rewarded for their devotion with not being returned to our school, especially when we are labeled a hard to sell school. please rescind your non- reelection decision and return these teachers to your school and preserve all seniority so you do not remove any more of our staff. if you want to remove or not reelect somebody, focus on the problem at our school. for the last two months, as you have heard from parents, students, and a staff, the administrators at this school have no concern for our students. none whatsoever. we would not be here every month and every time we get a chance until you understand. if it is going to take some of these parents to run for the school board, that is what we are going to have to do. you are not listening to us.
5:46 am
[applause] >> good evening. tobias cain, security at mlk middle school. you have heard a lot of testimony about what is going on with the school and a lot of personal things that have happened. i am here and i'm tired. i had a hard day. i come down here to fight for the kids because they deserve an education and a safe environment. the thing is, there are so many things going on there. we could go on and on. what i am most concerned about is i had an incident where i was injured and while i was out, the vice principal filed a false police report stating that a student attacked me and signed my name to it. we are only as strong as our
5:47 am
leadership. if we're going to teach our kids to have honesty and integrity, we should show that within our leadership and not do those types of things. once again, i am here fighting for these kids so they can get some equality. some days, we have bad kids there. i have been in the district 41 years. [applause] i do not look at any child as being bad. we were children ourselves and we did things. our task is to guide them and show them that these are the things not to do and the right way to do things. once again, i stand here fighting for the kids of mlk. [applause] >> i just want to say -- president yee: you already had
5:48 am
your opportunity. excuse me. excuse me. >> my name is ari coleman. i was here last meeting to request a meeting with the school. i requested a meeting, obviously. they overheard the meeting and i got a telephone call from the
5:49 am
principal. she said she would have the counselors set up a meeting. i still have not had a meeting. i went to the school and asked for a meeting and i have still not had a meeting. i want my meeting. how long does it take? how long does it take from the time they start school and they have an issue, how long does it take for a parent-teacher conference? [applause] >> good evening, everyone. my name is cindy cook. there is so much going on at dr. martin luther king middle school read it is really embarrassing to be given two minutes. i have to master's degrees, an
5:50 am
english credential, and not capable to teach my students, having suspended one student. we have had so many suspensions, perfect classroom controls, we have a racist principal who has sat on a child. it disturbed me. what got me out here tonight -- if it was my child, i would be very, very disturbed. that child approached me when i went to the school and said, i got sat on by the principle. the principal ways over 300 pounds. i was like, why is she telling me? one of the things that bothers me, that brought me out here tonight, i started thinking about her. i started thinking about a child who approached me, me, she
5:51 am
approached me. we are given two minutes with all the stuff that is going on at dr. martin luther king middle school. i am not capable of teaching there. all of the suspensions, how many have i done? none. how many kids have a kick out of the classroom? none. do i have perfect classroom control? yes. why do we take our kids out on the streets? why are they out of class? my son is an attorney, my niece is a medical doctor. we believe in education. they have perfect attendance throughout the history of going to school. tonight, i wondered what i would say and i knew this thing would go off. so what? so what? i am tired of watching our kids
5:52 am
get a kick out of school. kicked out for what? for fighting? fix it. you are supposed to fix this stuff, not kick kids out. we are tired of our children being kicked out of school. i have not take anyone out of school but i am being kicked out. for what? for loving my students? i have a 125 get well cards from my students that brought me here. president yee: thank you. thank you very much.
5:53 am
>> what are we teaching our children? when we take them to occur, -- to the curb, we are no better than the people doing this stuff to us. two minutes for problems that exist that are unbelievable? president yee: thank you, ms. cook. next speaker, please. thank you.
5:54 am
>> i am here again due to the violence of the school. the principle is not doing anything about it. i was there today from 11:00- 2:00. i had to call the police at the school. this is so embarrassing how the school is a zoo and there is no authority. the principal is not even there. there is no one to talk to about my child to writ i send my child there to learn. whenever i have to do to get your attention, i will. i am sick of it. the teachers, i love the teachers, but when it comes to the principals, they have no
5:55 am
authority to carry their needs to be something done. next step, we are going to be outside of that school. [applause] >> good evening. as you know, i have been an advocate for the bay view community, he gave you students, i have been a voice for them. important dates for the bay view community and the naacp. 1969, 1972, 1978, the naacp filed a lawsuit. from that lawsuit came a court order, mandate for the consent to creed. 48 years later, guess what? we are back where we started. we, at martin luther king middle school, like many of our
5:56 am
students that have roamed always, disrespect teachers, do not care about their education, are falling through the cracks. we, like many of our students, are left behind and neglected and forgotten about. we are not one of the schools that are being skipped. we have students from the bay view, from double rock, from west point, from sunnydale, the trichomes, the towers that our kids fight about that is not even there anymore. skipping school is wrong. thank you for standing up and taking a stand for us, kim. that you for coming and visiting our school. thank you commissioner fewer for
5:57 am
taking time out of your day to come and visit us. many of our students are being done wrong. students in the bay view and all over the southeast part of the city. i am standing up for them and for our teachers that are going to be let go. there are the ones that can relate and deal with our kids. we need more support for our teachers. those who do not know how to relate to our kids. we need parents to go back to the consent to creed and the mandate from that court order. thank you. [applause] president yee: you had your chance to speak already.
5:58 am
ok. did you get more cards? ok. next set, i will leave you one minute each. there are about 30 of you. katie, lisa, lindsay, reece, daniel, lori, jennifer, megan,
