i want to make sure you are aware of it. you are welcome to attend. i will be out of town on the 14th but will be attending the last two. and chris sent an invitation to the commissioners. the mayor is kicking office of corporate challenge summit on april 12, and this is in response to president obama's summer jobs plan an unchallenged into the this business community to hire youth, 13 to 24, so while the city does have some programs businesses may be able to access to be able to do this, i think the mayor will be asking businesses to look in and see what they can do in terms

of summer jobs and paid internships, and the mayor has set out a goal of 2500 but he would like to achieve, and the apartments have been asked to contribute in addition to the business community, so if you are available on thursday, it would be great for you to be able to join the mayor and hear what he has to say. more information will be coming, but it would be great to be able to communicate this with the businesses you are in touch with so we can have the mayor achieve his 2500 jobs and summer internships. we just covered small business week, so small business week, a couple of octaveupdates.

monday is the kickoff event, and that is going to be a solid networking event, which will have business resources, sponsors, and food from different neighborhoods, and tuesday, may 15, there are two items but would be great for you to attend. we will meet the commission president and vice president, but we have small business honorees from each district apartments -- department and the mayor to be recognized, and we hosta reception starting at 2:30, and the honorees are done

at the 3:30 special. that evening we are having a separate program for small business week, and that starts at 6:00, and this is much smaller. it is more of zero vip reception region more of of -- of a vip reception. i will make sure you can get it on your calendar in terms of location, and on wednesday, may 16 is our all-day conference, and if you have is the opportunity to be able to drop by, that would be great.

week ago today, the mayor signed a revolving loan fund, and thank you for attending the signing, and the first $500,000 is going to be allocated a immediately, and the remaining $500,000 will be allocated at a later time, and as you heard, the eating and drinking establishments controls were passed today out of the land use committee and to move forward as a committee report to the board of supervisors meeting tomorrow 0. if it all goes well, we could see these new recommendations will be in effect until early june.

the benefit corporation will have its third hearing at the meeting this coming wednesday. there were some amendments made at the last hearing. in the legislation, they provided more definition in terms of benefit corporations, and there is confusion, so more specificity around the definition, and the other addition which is the joint venture applications. all applicants need to be of benefit corporation, and the disability access improvement is still waiting to be scheduled,

association did an update on an interviewe i, the bar association did. your legal rights. lastly, under the director's report is the proposed committee schedule. we are currently working off the schedule in 2011, so chris and i wanted to present this and have you take a look at it.

we meet for out reach we can proceed further with some direction from supervisor chiu's office. dr i have a brief report as well. on march 23 i attended the office of the efficacy on high- tech and skilled workers in the sow process. they invited me because some of the small business owners feel it is extremely difficult to get approval for visas for skilled workers, and the citizenship integration services came from d.c. to attend this meeting, so there were some immigration lawyers and their clients attending.

they felt that high-tech and professional lawyers are here not to take jobs from our people. they are here to create jobs, so one indian restaurant owner testified that he open several locations in the bay area and created over 100 jobs, so they are talking with the office themselves affected region with the office of advocacy to hope they can streamline the process and create more jobs in the bay area, and i attended the public hearing of the citizens meeting of community development. goowe listened to many nonprofit organizations talking about how difficult it is because of continuous cuts, so that is it.

>> when stephen de staebler died, he was working on one of the biggest shows of his career, matter and spirit. it is a retrospective look at the many faces and faces of the life of an innovative artist from the california clay movement. stephen de staebler's developed in an area dominated by abstract expression.

even his peers saw his form. >> he was able to find a middle ground in which he balanced the ideas of human figuration and representation with abstraction and found it even more meaningful to negotiate that duality. >> another challenge was to create art from a meeting that was typically viewed as kraft material. his transforming moment was an accident in the studio. an oversized vertical sculpture began to collapse under its own weight and spread onto the floor. he sought a new tradition before him, landscape sculpture. >> you feel this extended human form underneath the surface of the earth struggling to emerge. eventually, it does. it articulates his idea that the earth is like flesh, and the archaeology and geology in the

earth are like the bones, the structure of the earth. this tied in with his idea of mother earth, with the sense that we are all tied to nature and the earth. >> a half dozen bay area museums and private collectors loan the massive sculptures to the museum for its matter and spirit retrospective. but the most unusual contributions came from stephen himself. a wall of autobiographical masks and hence from the early decades of his private study. >> he had one of the most beautiful studios i have ever been in. when you walk in, your first impression is of these monumental figures that you see in the exhibition, but if you went into the back corner of his studio, there was a series of shells with these diminutive figures. he told me, these are the heart of my studio. these little, and held intimate study is that he referred to as

his sketchbook. a painter might make drawings. stephen de staebler made miniature sculptures. >> during the 1970's, he was inspired by the monuments of egypt. he assembled a large rocks of clay into figures that resembled the ancient kings and queens. he credited a weathered appearance by rubbing glazes' into the clay while still wet. the misfires from his killed were brought in his backyard in his berkeley home. he called it his boneyard. in the last year of his life, he dug up the artifacts from his own history, and the bones were rearranged, in the were slimmer figures with wings. >> even if you knew nothing about his life or career, you sensed there was an artist dealing with this fundamental issue of life and death, the cake, netting back together, and you feel there is an attempt to deal with mortality and

immortality. there is a seeking of spiritual meaning in an existential stage. >> during his 50-year career, stephen de staebler worked to form and out of the clay of the ground and give it a breath of life. matter and spirit gathers the many expressions of his meditations. and gives the viewer and insight into the artist's life. learn more about the retrospective on line at

supervisor mar: item one. >> resolution authorizing a grant in the amount of $180,000 to implement existing commercial buildings energy performance ordnance. -- ordinance. supervisor mar: mr. rodriguez? >> guillermo rodriguez. the department of the environment was awarded a grant of $180,000 to support the implementation of the existing commercial building performance ordinance. it was adopted in february of 2011 and requires each commercial building 10,000 square feet or greater to annually report the energy performance, conduct an energy audit every five years, and direct the department of the environment to make transparent all of those findings.

restaurants. supervisor mar: think you for listening to neighborhood organizations and working with them to make sure that this resolution was supported by everyone. thank you, supervisor wiener. supervisor wiener: this legislation will dramatically simplify our permit process for food and drinking establishments while maintaining significant neighborhood controls and formula retail controls to make sure that we protect neighborhood character. last week, i and planning staff described the legislation in great detail. i also introduced a number of amendments based on extensive outreach and feedback with various neighborhoods and other stakeholders. the committee adopted those last week that caused continuance to be required.
