in san francisco who are members. creating many jobs in san francisco and outpacing the job growth in san francisco versus the rest of the country. sf city is delighted to commit 100 of its member internships 225 member companies. [applause] we are adopting two organizations where we will help place in turns. one of them is the sfpd future grad's program. it is focusing on keeping kids in high school. sf city is dunning $25,000 for scholarships -- donating $25,000

for scholarships for the program. there is a nationwide organization called summer qa camp. that organization is nationwide and places in turns into companies that need qa help. we will place over 25 in turns from 15 other companies who have signed up for summer camp. summer camp was founded -- someone you might recognize, jon bon jovi. sf city has committed to this program for years to come. it is the tech companies who are placing 2, 3, 4 interns this

summer. next summer, they will be placing 20. [applause] >> you are too legit to quit. one of the first company said stepped-up was pg &e. >> i am happy to tell you that he moved be. we did commit $100,000 to support all of you. we will add $25,000 to that. today. [applause] i also want to quickly say my story is not like some of the stories you have heard today. i did grow up lower middle class. i was the beneficiary of a program like this city is introducing today.

i am so thrilled to support the city, the mayor, leader pelosi, in this effort. thank all of you for being the future. thank you. to provide 40 additional jobs for 2012. >> bank of america. >> bankers are in high demand. i will keep this short and sweet. a couple of months ago, we made a commitment to president obama that we would be a supporter of the summer youth initiatives. we will make a $50,000 pledge. we are pleased to be here. thank you. [applause] >> we want you to notice that the thermometer is going up. ups. >> thank you very much. nice to see you, mr. mayor. i have been with ups for 34 years. i will be retiring soon. i would like for, you know, one of the youth to take my place.

we will commit to 15 new permanent jobs over the summer for the san francisco area. >> thank you. [applause] wells fargo bank. >> thank you very much. thank you for being the catalyst for this wonderful program. we believe that strong communities are great for everyone. businesses, the public sector, all of us benefit when communities are strong. we are honored to be able to participate in this program with a pledge of $50,000. thank you very much. at&t was also one of the initial participants is with the president on this very significant initiatives. we will pledge 20 interns over the summer and a contribution of $25,000. [applause] >> excellent. why is my thermometer not going up? all right, mr. mayor. jamba juice. >> we are very pleased to be here. we have pledged over 2500 jobs across the nation. san francisco, we are hiring 30 over the summer. we will have 13 internships in our corporate office. we will have 200 jobs in the bay area for the summer. >> mr. mayor, starbucks. >> hello. good to see you. i represent starbucks coffee company in my home town of san francisco. we are pleased, as you know, we are all over this great city. the stories presented, you inspired us. we commit to 25 jobs in san francisco. not just the jobs, but investing in providing these young adults the training that will help them today in the summer as well as many years in the future. we will also partner with our stores across the bay area to get a commitment from them as well. thank you. estate for tomorrows youth, we will pledge six summer internship positions. [applause] >> excellent. robert collins. >> i am a part of the tech committed to. we are a small team, eight people right now. we would like to add two more internships for the summer. >> excellent. >> we specialize in constructing a management and public outreach. i want to thank the mayor for during this. it is very critical. i want to make a special call to the small-business community. i want to encourage you to pledge. we are pledging two internships for the summer and one new

position. i want to thank the members of our larger business communities for going the extra mile. three. but we will now double that to 6. [applause] >> how are you doing? we are benefiting greatly from all of the great innovation in the city. we will hire 250 bay area youths. [applause] >> fantastic. >> we are representing air b &b. we have 10 paid internships this summer. >> 10 more.

in 2003. she was inspired when she first moved to this city in the early 1990's and discover the wild west atmosphere of open mi it's ic in the mission. >> although there were these open mics every night of the week, they were super macho. people writing poems about being jerks. beatty their chest onstage. >> she was energized by the scene and proved up with other girls who wanted their voices to be heard. touring the country and sharing gen-x 7 as a. her mainstream reputation grew with her novel. theses san francisco public library took notice and asked her if she would begin carrying a monthly reading series based on her community.

>> a lot of the raiders that i work with our like underground writers. they're just coming at publishing and at being a writer from this underground way. coming in to the library is awesome. very good for the library to show this writing community that they are welcome. at first, people were like, you want me to read at the library, really? things like that. >> as a documentary, there are interviews -- [inaudible] >> radar readings are focused on clear culture. strayed all others might write about gay authors. gay authors might write about universal experiences. the host creates a welcoming

environment for everybody. there is no cultural barrier to entry. >> the demographic of people who come will match the demographic of the reader. it is very simple. if we want more people of color, you book more people of color. you want more women, your book more women. kind of like that. it gets mixed up a little bit. in general, we kind of have a core group of people who come every month. their ages and very. we definitely have some folks who are straight. >> the loyal audience has allowed michelle to take more chances with the monthly lineup. established authors bring in an older audience. younker authors bring in their

friends from the community who might be bringing in an older author. >> raider has provided a stage for more than 400 writers. it ranges from fiction to academics stories to academic stories this service the underground of queer fell, history, or culture. >> and there are so many different literary circles in san francisco. i have been programming this reading series for nine years. and i still have a huge list on my computer of people i need to carry into this. >> the supportive audience has allowed michele to try new experiment this year, the radar book club. a deep explorationer of a single work. after the talk, she bounces on stage to jump-start the q&a. less charlie rose and more carson daly.

>> san francisco is consistently ranked as one of the most literate cities in the united states. multiple reading events are happening every night of the year, competing against a big names like city arts and lectures. radar was voted the winner of these san francisco contest. after two decades of working for free, michelle is able to make radar her full-time job. >> i am a right to myself, but i feel like my work in this world is eagerly to bring writers together and to produce literary events. if i was only doing my own work, i would not be happy. it is, like throwing a party or a dinner party. i can match that person with that person. it is really fun for me. it is nerve wracking during the actual readings. i hope everyone is good.

you have before you charts ecorse of our caltrain -- charts a course of our caltrain corridor. i just want to give the nod to the empty seat -- mtc for putting this together. in san francisco, we consider caltrain to be the transit spine that connects the city to san jose and san francisco to silicon valley and all of our partner cities. caltrain electrification has had a broad regional support for many years. caltrain is the most important thing we can do for generations to come. here in san francisco, i am working hard to make sure we continue to be the innovation

capital of the world. cities across this country and other nations are looking at its cities for solutions to everyday problems. transit is our number one concern because we are a growing economy. we cannot increase roadways and airport runways there. that will not be a part of solutions for the future. you have a good solution. it is going to be affordable, it will be faster, and it will be better. i want to welcome you. as i came here this morning, i ran into a lot of great people. i know they represent a lot of generations of people. i hope, as i think many of you

do, i hope to see the trains pulled through all the way from los angeles to our valley, through our peninsula all the way to our transbay terminal. thank you very much. >> thank you, mayor.
