supervisor camps -- kim has a second certificate today. supervisor kim: thank you for your patience. we introduced a national public works week, and it is our honor to introduce the staff, the men and women of san francisco's department of public works, for their service to the city and county of san francisco. we do this every year, but i do not think there are enough times we can thank you for your dedication and commitment. being new to the board, sometimes we come in with an expectation that we will be battling the stereotypes of city government, the bureaucrats who sit in the offices and are not necessarily committed to serving our city. my experience has been the opposite. i have been impressed by the commitment and intelligence i have seen among city staff.

i am most impressed by the department of public works. i do not think we can command you enough days of the year. -- commend you enough days of the year. you work 24 hours a day, seven days of the week. you are the most visible and understandable department of services we provide in the city, but also the most invisible. we wake up every morning, and our streets are clean, and we do not know the men and women who do the work to make our city beautiful. most importantly, i am struck by the immense commitment the individuals of this department have for our city. we send multiple e-mails. i think district 6 has tons of hot spots for the city. every single one of our e-mails gets immediately responded to, no matter how large or small the

issues that are presenting to us. over the last year, dpw opened five branch libraries, for which it helped. it broke ground on the mission building and the cruise ship terminal. it activated mobile food facilities. the kicked off a $248 million road repayment program, and collected over 2,605 pounds of fruits and vegetables for a san francisco food bank. the have insured the level of cleaning services were maintained in many of our challenging corridors, even in the wake of the loss of redevelopment funds. they have also developed a management tool to enhance

service, delivery efficiency, and have engaged a record number of volunteers for cleanup and beautification efforts -- over 6600 individuals who have volunteered to work with you to keep our neighborhood clean. i want to bring up our director of the department of public works to speak on behalf of your department. [applause] >> good afternoon. on behalf of the men and women of the department of public works, i would like to thank the board of supervisors for this recognition. every year, all over the country, and nationally, our public works organizations celebrate public-works weekend. we always start our celebration with a big race, and we were

able to clean up an hour and a half earlier than in previous years. monday, we had an open house in the engineering and architecture department, where individuals can see the great work on all the projects being conceptually envisioned for the city. we gave a ceremony four years of service. i think we totalled over 2200 years. we were able to recognize our employees who go far beyond the call of duty to perform here at the department. tomorrow, we have our open house, if any of you is available. at cesar chavez, where we opened all the shops, we invite the

schoolchildren to come and see what public workers do. they get to build a few things and see what a public worker does. with many of the project you heard, we have tours. the public safety building, the cruise terminal, and other projects are agents have been involved in. with all that said, we do want to thank everyone. we will continue to do our best. we will do our best to respond in a timely manner. thank you very much.

president chiu: thank you. [applause] thank you, supervisor kim, and thank you, dpw. with that, why don't we go to our next accommodation, provided by supervisor chu. supervisor chu: thank you. today, i have the honor of recognizing phillips -- phillip katulas, if i can ask you to

come up along with your family. bill is what we would call a sunset legend. he is the beloved proprietor of a chicken coop, a restaurant in our local community. 10 months ago -- this is actually a belated certificate. 10 months ago, chicken coop closed its doors. we were distraught. we did not know where to find a bill. finally, through good fortune, my dental hygienist is his daughter. we talked about how businesses impact his community and having deals with family. i wanted to talk about how important chicken coop is for

our district, and how much it is missed. when i first talked to deena about this, he did not want a big fuss made over him, but i am glad everybody convinced you to come out today, finally. he was going in greece. he moved to the united states 1957. he has been in the food business 30 years, something our families share. my parents were restaurant owners as well. this is very much a family business, just like we had. he began his career as a chef in a barbecue place in downtown san francisco. in a couple of years, he relocated to 16th street and valencia.

then he relocated and opened the chicken coop. many of our patrons call the office to ask what happened. a quick look at yelp, and you will see what chicken coop meant to many people. it is a place to come to when you feel things in your world are too fast. the time stops. another favorite -- if you love tasty, miti -- meaty goodness, come here. the best ribs in town. barbecue sauce would only ruin the flavor. and the guy who works behind the counter is so nice. i wanted to share those with you. we are sad to see the chicken coop close after so many years.

there will be a new restaurant, not too far off. since our office is a full- service office, if you are looking for him, be sure to give us a call. we will connector. he has his family here to celebrate. can you join me in giving a big hand? [applause] >> good afternoon, ladies and gentleman. on behalf of my father and my family, we would like to thank supervisor carmen chu for this wonderful honor. we would also like to thank our countless, loyal customers, who have enjoyed my father's

delicious food through the many years. we could not have done it without you. growing up, the restaurant was a second home. our dad loved what he did, and because of this was very good at it. many customers made a point to follow our dad to the different locations he had his restaurant. we opened our family to everyone, and welcomed them into our second home. many would say, "your dad is such a hard worker." these were things we already knew. our father has a work ethic we have seen in no one else. he worked seven days a week, and did not like taking days off. christmas and new year's day were the only days the restaurant was a home -- was closed, and sometimes on easter.

the whole family served and sold up to 40 turkeys to other families on thanksgiving. this was a passion. my dad enjoyed seeing his customers develop friendships with. he would tell sunny jokes and stories that made so many laugh. families would say that unless they saw the big guy in the front, and they would cut come eat. many customers would ask for recipes, especially for his famous rice pudding. when my father decided to close his most recent restaurant last june after 17 years of being there, it did not come without shocked and said faces. some customers even cried. after the restaurant had been closed a couple of months, we ran into customers everywhere we went. i remember being at costco with my dad when elderly customers spotted him.

they were hugging him, asking him where he had been, and telling him how much they missed him. it showed how much everyone missed him, and how much he had missed them. we are happy to say he will have to be missed no more. he will be opening his new restaurant on a street in san mateo. customers will once again be able to eat the food they have enjoyed for many years. we cannot wait to see them all again. we knew our dad could not be away too long. many people have had the privilege of meeting our father, but none are as fortunate as heat -- as we are, his family. we have always been proud of our dad. his honor in receiving a special

commendation is just a reminder of how a young man who came from a small business in greece cannot connect with so many people through a big heart. thank you for recognizing his small business today. [applause]

president chiu: our final commendation of the day will be provided by supervisor mar. supervisor mar: thank you. i would like to ask if several people can come forward.

we just heard from the department of public works staff, and i really acknowledge their hard work during public- works week. they were out there with us, cleaning up washington high school, on saturday, with a clean team in the richmond district. another farm in the efforts to clean and green our neighborhoods are the hard- working volunteers from our neighborhood organizations, to keep our neighborhood clean. there are amazing activists. i want to honor their work today. for many years, mina worked on keeping the area on geary boulevard clean, with loving attention and care. you can tell the great work, and

how it has been expanded. she is an outstanding citizen. she removed branches from trees blocking school crossing signs. we always see her clipping, trimming, and watering the plants. she is a tireless hard worker that makes san francisco beautiful. she works without any expectation of reward, but takes pride and obtained great satisfaction simply being a good neighborhood. her work is noticeable and greatly appreciated. she is a shining example for the younger folks at the schools in the district. she's simply says that everybody has to do something. san francisco is our home, and we should look after us. what a difference that could make throughout the city if each of us did a little bit. i want to thank her for her dedicated service. she is an outstanding san

franciscan, and an inspiration all over the city. she does what she can for our environment. i also wanted to think patricia, the director of the richmond district neighborhood center, and keith, a community director, who highlighted mina's achievements. will you say a few words? >> thank you for this well- earned recognition. i first met mina several years ago. i noticed there was something different about the northern side of geary boulevard between 22n and 23rd. it looked better, felt better, and felt like a nicer part of the neighborhood. there was a person who came out, "there is a woman who spends an

hour or two every day, sometimes twice a day, and cleans the neighborhood. she trims the bushes and keeps everything clean puzzle it not only creates a visual difference. there is a different feel when you walk down that street. i am delighted she is getting that recognition. i hope she will set an example for other people. anyone can do this. it takes a little bit of time and of little bit of thought. the whole city will look and feel that much better. thank you for this recommendation -- thank you for this commendation, and congratulations. it is well earned. >> i want to add my kudos also. individual time spent picking something up make such a big difference.

you can bet children will follow the same thing. we, as adults, set the example. you have done such a beautiful job. you make our neighborhoods clean, plus i feel so good. she does it without any recommendation, without any expectation. she does it knowing it is the right thing to do to help keep the neighborhood clean. thank you for taking time to acknowledge citizens such as mina. supervisor mar: i wanted to again thank gene and pat and beat richmond district

neighborhood center. this gives an example of how neighbors take care of keeping the neighborhood level -- livable. i will be out there with many of the families that come out as well. >> i am so excited to be here. thank you so much for being -- for having me. it is a big honor for me. i do not deserve it. it is a responsibility to do that. a neighbor once said to me, " your weekly salary is your pride." she was right. i do not expect anything else. what you do for your

neighborhood, it does not matter what it is. to me, it makes a bit of a difference. that is a jewel in the crown to me. i will continue to do the best i can. thank you so much. i have all kinds of stuff. thank you, all the supervisors. you are wonderful. i am honored to see the city hall. it is my first time. it is beautiful. and all of you beautiful people. thank you.
