years ago, david. what are we going to do with this surplus property? i appreciated the process we went through to find out of this something we could do, the community was clear that there was a need and we needed to fill it. not only for the child care community or the education, but also the community that lived around the area, that has been taking care of the property over the years because it has been an eyesore. i was happy and the last meeting to hear the support from the community, this is going to be going into the site. i am excited to see the investment to be making. i look forward to a long, a wonderful partnership in coming
5:01 am
together. the only thing i would asked, this is asking us to go into an agreement. i know there were details that needed to get worked out. if we can get an update on that that would be great. we appreciate that you are going to be serving the community and you have been open to many of the ideas that have been put forward. commissioner maufas: i want to echo what my colleagues have said. i do not think i have sat on the buildings and grounds committee. i am happy to see this go forward. i am sorry there are no public comment cards. i was hoping to hear some french. commissioner wynns: i wanted to say that i was happy to meet
5:02 am
with you but i want to honestly say in public, i am intimately interested in using our resources to support private schools. but i am supportive of the policy we passed, the directive to try to reap some financial benefits from properties we are not likely to use. even though the benefit for this is far out, there are other benefits in the meantime. it is a cost for us. that is why i am supporting this. we asked them to do this and he did it.
5:03 am
that is what i will be voting for. >> i wanted to thank the board of education, so many of you, for working with the superintendent and i over the course of time to have the discussions that brought it to this point. it has been an enlightening process of working all the way through and everybody knows what is going on. thank you. president yee: again, this is the second major transaction we are going to have this year. this property has been available for a long time.
5:04 am
i am glad that the building will be used for that purpose and i am glad we have found somebody that has the finances to make this a reality. when i asked these questions, i can they find and support this, the vision they have, it was clear they were going to be able to do this. i think we did the right thing. selecting the organization's that are going to be able to implement the program and the vision that they put forward to us. without further delay, let's have a roll call. commissioner fewer: yes. commissioner maufas: yes. commissioner mendoza: yes.
5:05 am
commissioner murase: yes. vice president norton: yes. commissioner wynns: yes. president yee: yes. president yee: just because we have a relationship, you are more than welcome to come every tuesday to our meetings and sit through this. congratulations. >> one more of the details are known, i will bring that back to the report. >> i know you agreed we would not take things out of order, but we have one other item -- we would like the public to hear it. our resolution on the tax initiative. i do not think it is going to take very long. president yee: that is a good idea. item r.
5:06 am
5:07 am
introduction before the board. reading of the resolution. vice president norton: you want me to read the whole thing? here we go. in support of funding initiative, where as the board of education has been forced to make budget reductions in the amount of $113 million, and anticipates cutting an additional $83 million, and where as two statewide funding initiatives have been submitted for the general election, and whereas one initiative is sponsored by governor jerry brown and supported by the california federation of teachers and all other statewide management organizations, including the school board association, and
5:08 am
whereas the other initiatives in bond corp. debt reduction act is sponsored by the advancement project, civil rights attorney, and the parent teacher association, and by the california school board, and both initiatives would benefit schools by lessening but not eliminating impacts to districts throughout the state of california, and the current reductions for the school year will result in numerous personnel reductions, and services essential to educating its children, including the increase of classicize, and whereas based on the fact that either initiative passed by the electorate would serve to mitigate the cuts impacting the district and whereas the failure of both initiatives would trigger a $5.5 billion cut it to california schools, resulting in
5:09 am
the for the reduction of instructional days for students as well as cuts toñ%rñtv teached other employees, and in the event both of them pass, conflicts would be resolved through legal means and not double taxation. therefore, be it resolved the board of education hereby endorses both funding initiatives and urges voters to vote yes on both of them to mitigate the continuing free- fall of california's public system to the detriment of the students whom the members of the board are elected to serve and whom the educators and staff are dedicated to serve. be it resolved that this action of the board of education will be communicated to the media, representatives, and the proper campaign.
5:10 am
president yee: there were a few public comments on this. michelle parker? linda's gone? >> he had to leave the meeting but she did convey to me -- >> i know i spoke earlier but i am michelle parker, parent of three children in the district. i want to give a heartfelt appreciation for your leadership and the endorsement of these initiatives. it is a necessary and important step to take and we encourage all parents and citizens to vote this november in support of both measures so do we not see
5:11 am
more cuts in middle of the year. i put outside on the table a stack of handouts that list what every school will receive if the initiative passes in november. you also receive that on e-mail this morning. he can also go to the web site if you want to look up any school to see what state they're doing. you can also e-mail me. for those watching it is president@sfpta.org. it received over $55 million in the first year of implementation. that is significant. it could bring classicize back down. and it puts decisions in the local communities and not in sacramento. it is a progressive income tax that would bring $10 billion per

year and after the first four years, when a portion is paying it down the debt, the number will grow even larger. thank you for your leadership in bringing this forward. i am excited about it. >> i am not linda but when she left she left me her speech and so i'm going to read it as she wrote it. president yee, commissioners, ladies and gentlemen, this is my final board of education meeting in that position. like many many educators, i am retiring. i rise to speak to rogers support of these initiatives. we appreciate this resolution

and energy to go further. the appropriateness of this to support funding for our schools. these initiatives are arising from the sweat of hundreds of californians who want what was articulated in the labor movement, that is more. we want more for our children. more for their persia futures -- their futures. these initiatives will bring us more if we do more. we need more work, more door knocking, more convincing other voters to approve the plea want more for our children. now let's get to work. thank you. >> thank you. >> i wanted to make knowledge that this was her last meeting in that position.
5:14 am
i am sorry we did not to acknowledge her and thank her for her service. >> any comments from the board? >> i want to say that csba is the only organization to have taken a support position on both tax initiatives. we think it is important. we think it is important the whole education committee be united in saying to everybody that we, the education committee, agrees with voters and citizens who are aware of the underfunding and cuts to public education and support higher taxes. i urge my colleagues. i am confident we will support that.
5:15 am
we are interested and supportive of sending that message to our partners in the education committee. we support both of these. we feel the governor's initiative as an emergency stop gap. the other initiative as a first step. i thank my colleagues in advance for their support. i urge the passage of this. >> commissioner mendoza para >> thank you. thank you for this. does anybody know if there is one of these for the other initiative? jerry brown does not have one? >> there is not because money will go into the general fund. it is in the meat grinder.
