to presidio, and they were going to be heavily shattered, and the impact was going to be a lot more significant with that top floor, so i was trying to advocate for oa profit but would be slightly smaller. i think now we were working for the type of thing, and i had hoped there would be others who would have voted against this, and i could make a motion for the smaller garage and. i never spoke against the project. -- i could make a motion for the smaller project. i never spoke against the
2:31 pm
project. maybe we could figure out a way to take the floor off and lessen its impact. good >> as this continues to come back to the board, and i want to touch on an additional stain and which has impacted you got might outweigh the benefits of affordable housing, and you mentioned shadows. we all have priorities, but for me, shadows does not outweigh even five additional units, so i am curious about your thinking. >> my understanding is there would be no fewer units for transitional use. we were short of that. what we were trying to do was to provide mosley affordable --
2:32 pm
mostly affordable, and i thought maybe they could cross something -- craft something by putting a couple of units in and be able to lessen the height of about. good -- height of that. you have to weigh things. i agree housing is more important, but you have to look at it, because otherwise we would have a towering buildings in every neighborhood has a lower profile. i saw the shadows of these, and i said, let's see if we can cross something -- craft something to still meet our goals. how they did it was a way to
2:33 pm
pencil it out, so about was a suggestion -- that was a suggestion. >> i am curious about your 10 years of excess ability and your willingness to engage with constituents. i want to ask you about a project that is coming to our district, which is essentially on pier 32, and i wonder if you can share some of your thoughts on this issue and some of your principles that will help guide you on this process. good >> this has been geared to my heart. -- dear to my heart. even when i was just moving to san francisco in the late 1960's, when we were unsuccessful in getting under green adults -- getting an arena
2:34 pm
built, and it has also cost us hundreds of millions of dollars, probably billions of dollars in lost revenue from concerts, from political conventions, from all of the type of events that require a state of the art of reno pier a good -- state of the arts arena. nobody is going out to the cow palace anymore. it is not going to make it, so i have really been calling out for an arena for years. there was originally the consideration of a site south of china basin, which was also viable, but i thought is have some real event of shoes, being close to the bay bridge and walking distance from the downtown area and walking
2:35 pm
distance from taking new name metro -- taking muni metro. the important thing is the impact on residents, who are already feeling the impact, and this will be a much larger impact, because they will have presumably up to 250 a vent and nights of the year -- 250 event nights of the year, so i think it has to be carefully crafted, and i would really like to meet with neighbors and listen to their concerns and identifying certain concerns. is it going to be accessed getting in and out of the residences? will it leave you infringement? would it be aesthetics and? would it be general department and behavior of the participants
2:36 pm
who go to this event? these are of particular concerns. we go through the same thing with the masonic temple, but this has a lot more impact, so i think the sooner we are able to get concerns and here they are going to mitigate and do whatever they have to do to help out the neighborhood, to protect air quality of life, i think it can be win-win for everybody, and i think it has to be designed properly so it is not a big block right off the embarcadero. otherwise, i was there for the announcement, and it was really a spectacular sight. it could be the best one in the
2:37 pm
country for an indoor farina -- arena. by seen no other questions from members. gootwo minutes on item number t. >> does the overhead work? >> thank you very much. i am on the boards of nation improvement, and we are also supportive of him becoming a commissioner pierre a good -- of him becoming a commissioner. i am vice-president of government and media affairs for the merchant association, which has voted unanimously to support the renomination of michael anthony -- antonini.
2:38 pm
he is a civic treasurer. youhe is not only always available. here we are talking to folks on our but st. reminded of the mission street was there before dark look street -- before bartlett street. i have to say he is also a civic treasurer. the two of you are cut out of the same cloth year ago i will vote the mission district of against any other district when it comes to land use issues. everybody wants everything, but you have to balance it. thank you so much.
2:39 pm
>> supervisors. i am representing the san francisco neighborhood network. i will briefly repeat from the letter. the san francisco neighborhood network is a group with members from all 11 districts focusing on good planning and good government. we have focused on myriad items that comes before it and procedural questions. we have found consensus on the following a spirited we are disappointed commissioner ron miguel has not been reappointed, and we regret we cannot support the renomination of michael antonini.
2:40 pm
we believe commissioner miguel has shown a better understanding of the issues that come before the commission. give one example is affordable housing. he has consistently demonstrated an understanding of the various challenges, including in the low income community. we urge that nearly reconsider which -- mayor lee reconsider which one to appoint. >> my name is david elliot lewis, and we have discussed this with great interest and some debate. this is an organization comprised of people who are community leaders, organizers, activists from all 11
2:41 pm
districts, and we unfortunately cannot support the reappointment of commissioner antonini, and we say about considering the best needs of our district and what our community needs. i find it difficult to speak negatively about anyone, because i respect the commissioner, but we cannot support his reappointment your your -- his reappointment. thank you for your time. >> thank you. i am speaking both as an advocate who has spoken of the planning commission for over 20 years and is of broad public school parents who appreciates what the planning commission does for our communities. over the years i have found
2:42 pm
commissioner antonini to be attentive hearing good when he reveals all of the materials but come to commissioners. i am often at odds with him. i often represent new entertainment uses and contemporary design two particular issues he has often been at odds with, but i find his discourse and consideration of issues to be in death, and he has one particular characteristic that is lacking elsewhere, and that he is willing to not only hear from members of the committee who have not been before the commission before, but he often recapitulates there are givens.
2:43 pm
they really feel even if they have not succeeded in their goals, they have been hurt, and i want to express my appreciation for playing the role, and i hope he will continue to play the role going forward. >> i would like to _ everything said about the demeanor at planning meetings and his effort to pull out from people who are nervous what is that concerns them and to make sure it can be dealt with. i have been practicing real estate in san francisco for 42 years. i have been in front of commissioner antonini and his colleagues many times. sometimes he has voted in favor of my position and sometimes against my position, but i have always felt but he was extremely fair, but he made his decisions
2:44 pm
based on what he thought was the best interest of the city and county of san francisco and its citizens a. he reads what you give him ahead of time. he always comes prepared. he makes findings so people understand why the commission did what they did and how it can be explained to a judge is that is necessary. he knows the city extremely well, not only as a planning commissioner and not only in his official capacity but because of his deep love of an interest in the city. i became involved in the mission working with the vocational school, and i got to know some folks endive community, -- in
2:45 pm
that community, and i learned how involved he has been not only in the mission and other communities. i am always amazed about how much he knows about each neighborhood and the people in those neighborhoods, not just a powerful. >> thank you you're a good >> good afternoon. we broke yesterday to each of you are urging the nomination of all three. we support the move from the board of appeals to nomination to the planning commission. in regarding the plan, we urge his confirmation as well, and i want to submit a letter for the alliance for jobs and sustainable growth, which is a
2:46 pm
civic organization representing numerous labor and civic organizations in san francisco. as a former commissioner who stood before you in the past on confirmation, commissioner antonini just got an a-plus in responding to a growing and proper set of questions, and i think those answers indicate the kind of good work he has done and the knowledge he has and the need the city has for continuity. there have seen changes with the nomination, and the planning commission could use the continuity for reappointment with your favorable action with commissioner antonini. did you certainly are a
2:47 pm
treasure. >> thank you. >> my name is mike garcia, and i am here to advocate on behalf of mike antonini. i know him to be a man of high integrity and his love for the city was manifested here today. i want to make one comment about the fact that it seems as though there is some moves to not have the diversity he brings to the planning commission, and that is what we pride ourselves on, and we should also tried to sidestep most of the commission reflect that diversity. talking about the fact of because of certain points of views he did not have the necessary depth of knowledge.
2:48 pm
it was obviously vast because of the ability to respond to the questions asked of him. i think it is unreasonable to say that he lacks knowledge. he has a different point of view. i apologize for doing this because i have to leave. i served on the board of appeals, and he was one of those individuals when he came on the board, it was almost as if he had been there forever. he demonstrated full understanding of all the issues the face of. when he was able to help other people he made sure to do that. thank you very much for your time.
2:49 pm
>> i would like to strongly support the reappointment of mike antonini. he has an enormous understanding of the city. you have seen that already, and it would be my understanding he has to be the hardest working commissioner on any city commission that i know of commo, and even when he goes agt us, he is open-minded and super out returning phone calls and e- mails. region -- he is superb about returning phone calls and e- mails. i would urge your reappointment.
2:50 pm
>> others bring up issues that have very little relevance. he is always courteous and respectful, even to those whose position he does not support or a share. my former supervisor often spoke of an anonymous lack of civility. the same could be said of the planning commission. dr. antonini is successful, and not levelheaded, who an easy to deal with. he does have some of us institutional knowledge of the issues, and i think he should be reappointed as curator >> thank you -- he should be reappointed.
2:51 pm
>> thank you. also, it should not be rare in someone who is a commissioner, but unfortunately, they are rare. mr. antonini possesses everything and more. it is vital to not base decisions on ideology, but on someone who looked at the facts. i think he has a vision for the future of san francisco. we cannot sit still. we have to move forward. i have to mention planning will be more involved now around the elderly population.
2:52 pm
i think he will be well served to deal with those in the future. >> i have known him for years, and we have served on various organizations, and i want to say a couple of things to all of you. he does bring not only institutional memory, but diversity.
2:53 pm
he also brings ideological diversity. it is important we talk about how the discussion should not just the to the left of recognize there is a substantial amount of electorate a are moderate or conservative. he does his homework. he takes an entire wednesday off of his invoke tractors. for the last 10 years -- he takes an entire wednesday off to practice. if he has any questions he goes out into the field to take a look of what is going on, so i hope you will support. thank you 3 much.
2:54 pm
>> thank you. i am going to briefly state my support for all three candidates. i am very grateful for support during cindy wu. i work for all of them in different capacities. i have worked for cindy for a long time, and i am happy she will likely be returning to the planning commission. i am also an adviser, and many of my clients are small property owners, and i know many of them have approached commissioner antonini because of his institutional memory and knowledge and to get guidance about what is doable with the planning code, and every time as it has been said this afternoon, commissioner antonini has been very accessible and very open-minded about giving
2:55 pm
advice as to what the options are. i think for many property owners this advice is very appreciated. i want to give my support to the newly nominated. i grew up with him in the course of my capacity on treasure island during the years he was working on that project. i think during the scope of being able to listen, sitting through the hundreds of community meetings, making sure the voice of the public was heard fairly and how to help the commission and the city come to a conclusion. i think he is the person, and i think his experience would be very valuable to the planning commission. >> thank you, thank you for being here.
2:56 pm
>> i have known mike antonini since he became a commissioner. let me say the germans chains the winning team, and they did not make it to the finals, and we have a winning team with mike antonin the common -- mike antonini, and the winning team is demonstrated by functionality. oakland has a budget of 500 million on in the six square miles, and obviously there is a disparity in the leadership, and the reason we have this $7.5 billion budget, a large part of it is we understood the concept of added value, and value to assets, and the planning commission has been one of the problems and one of the energy
2:57 pm
sources of having value, and that is why when we have affordable housing problems, unless we have the money we will continue to have problems, but the budget is becoming a large part of the decisions, and we speak to the winning team, and mike antonini is one of the winners in that concept. we should also understand it was not always an area of congeniality. it was divisiveness. he brought congeniality and objectivity that made people feel good, and he listened to all sides, and we have a winner with mike antonini, and it would be as drastic mistake not to reappoint them. i have seen with a commission since the late 1960's, and i have never seen a commissioners
2:58 pm
so hard working, and he brings so much to the table. gooaxe thank you, mr. dahmer yer -- mr. don a year-- donahue. >> i have to leave in a few minutes. my daughter is starting contractions. i have got to get out of here. good >> congratulations. >> it is always great to be here for a long time. a very smart commo, very knowledgeable man.
2:59 pm
life congratulations, and thank you for being here. >> i got a call but commands support for mr. antonini, and watching him on television, i find him very fair. being on the planning commission, there's a lot of hard work. i have been to meetings and seen him, and i thought he was very fair. >> thank you. >> i am here to support his appointment to the planning commission. gooit does not seem like four ys now, but i think he is the hardest working commissioner out of all the commissions in san francisco, and i
