7:01 am
san francisco because this is -- i hear a lot that this is ethics commission mayor, women -- what is the other commission? and every other commission is a mayor's commission. and i'm really afraid also that this city hall is not going to so please reinstate ross mirkarimi,ñér reinstate the dignity of the woman, reinstate the justice in san francisco. thank >> president chiu: thank you. next speaker#mj;c. >> hi. my name is jim and let me5zoñ bn by saying ross and elanea are we came to know ross as our supervisor and understood his intelligence, passion, and capacity to accomplish great things. all of us, human, and therefore noted p perfect. that brings us to the
7:02 am
restorativei's justice issue tht ross supports, our da supports, supposedly everybody supports, theodoaç idea is that you're sud to acknowledge wrong-doing, you're supposed toúhlz apologiz, you're supposed to make amends to the injured party that are the goal is to return to societ and be fruitful and productive, and go forward. that's what we're asking5s)÷ yoo do for ross. we need him as our sheriff. obviously, from the comments eliana is very satisfied that he has made amends, and she has made it very clear how she wants this to go forward. so since we are all human, we all do make a mistakes. i'll repeat the quote that was given earlier, let he who is
7:03 am
first without sin be first to cast the first stone. thank you. >> president chiu: thanks. next speaker. >> i'm here in response to all that is going on, and it's very saddening that they did this to ross. i saw ross at the earthquake memorial for all the victims and everything. and i felt that though there was something going on with ross that night, because he was very disturbed. now, he didn't have time to talk to me, because he had to go chase his son down, because she couldn't catch him. now, ross leads by example, not with an iron hand. and we should recognize that. when she said that it was going
7:04 am
to ruin ross' career, you know who it really ruined? it ruined her. and i hope it doesn't because she's a really good girl, and ross is really lucky to have her. now, as far as predicting the future, i predicted an earthquake, and a tsunami, and the demise of all the nuclear power plants. i did this on tv so you can't debate it. now, i thank ross. i thank that little boy for being there. keep ross going. and i hope that you all realize that god did this for you, not to you. my birthday is 9/11, and god did that for me so that you may know

7:06 am
he's the top law enforcement ideally the sheriff would have said because i've -- the crime and i want my department to be seen as a department that will not only hold offenders accountable but ask offenders to hold themselves accountable and since my conviction is relevant to my duties and probation term within my own department that i will oversee, i will resign for the integrity of this city and send a message that any level of domestic violence will be taken seriously but he didn't do this. so i am asking you not to be scared of setting a precedent of removing a sheriff from office for misconduct related to the sheriff's role. we voted you because we thuft you to do a thorough job in other cases that might come before you. being progressive, which the people are claiming to keep him in office i think being progressive is beyond our -- violence against women such as he said sorry it was a mistake
7:07 am
opinion it was mig nord when it was against women. san francisco wants a sheriff who is proud that san francisco has set a standards to keep a city safe, and i really truly believe it is in every citizen's best interest for us to show that public officials are trusted to hold convicted offenders responsible at the top level. thank you. >> president chiu: going to wait for quiet. >> hope i have the same time. my name is -- actually i'm here on behalf of iranian in the bay area san francisco. i was political president of -- for woman rights. and it is my -- woman rights because i was in prison for that. i got lots of torture for that. here, i want to support ross mirkarimi. just i want you to remember, many iranian come to this

7:10 am
3. there are seven of you. and you know i filed formal ethics charges for obstruction of justice. that's a felony, i'll remind you, and perjury. you signed your sunshine srgss certifications. you said you read the sunshine ordinance and understood it and you shut sunshine down, you obstructed justice. that's a felony. this is open and shut, real cut and dry. this is not vague law, like ms. keyser and mr. keith seem to think is appropriate in the hall of the people. you know, we're going to vote on november 6, and -- on whether we want to fire big bird. i'm saying that to all of san francisco and everybody watching tv because we've got a real serious vote on november 6. we have another serious vote coming up if we decide to recall mayor lee and recall district
7:11 am
attorney gascón. he didn't find anything wrong with the mayor lying on the stand on june 29 at this ethics commission. i was in the room. officer -- who was in the room he and i were the only two human beings that did not leave. the minute that that ethics meeting on -- was wrong. supervisor did not rees the meeting. he adjourned the meeting at 1:08 when we had some telephone call from the seven foot tall ukrainian bomber. i guess the sfpd can%cm@ñ see hw tall someone is on the telephone. this is not funny. it. but recalling supervisors and recalling the machine in san francisco, that's up -- >> president chiu: thank you.8xk next speaker. >> ladies and]n.2ç gentlemen, gd

afternoon. as well as supervisors, good afternoon. i'm here in hopefully to stop into the ed lee magic show, do, instead of analyzing the3m"f over the past nine months, in the city and countyu= q of san francisco, you can shoot someone dead as a policeman and but if you're a sheriff being elected by the mayor,%hyu you ct even get your paycheck. if you lookeddhss at things hern a realistic light, you will see collapsed in theoó ussr in 1990 but it's still good and present here in san francisco and china, whereis(pvju ed lee has made 100 visits since he's
7:13 am
beforehand. today, your job is to do one was a supervisor with you for votes as a sheriff in this your job is to cut him down from the cross and resurrectqç=kb hi. it's the only choice you have that's real. and if any one of you think that's not your choice, and you're going to be mayor next time, let me tell you something. the political machine in this city has already picked the next mayor and i regret to say it's not any one of you. this place will be under the chronicle examiner more times than you need. i thank you for your time. >> president chiu: thank you. next speaker. >> good afternoon, ladies and

shelter, an organization that has provided shelter and otherph services to survivors of domestic violence, most of them refugees and#rby6 immigrants se 1988. i am rela÷qe?$ñ new to aws but not new to domestic violence or the importance ofdj5l having les who may stand behind and uphold progressive policies and programsecxut protect survivors. i'm not new to ethics. i believe that the issue before youkvz. simple. we need not look to the details of the case that brought you here. what19[ the individuals involvd thought, did, meant to do, wish they had done, done, on a particular day. an elected official, his actions and statements it is a simple conflict of interest to have anózv elected w enforcement official, responsible for overseeing
7:17 am
himself is on probation. the ethical decision would have been for ross to step down and mayor lee's request that he do so maintain san francisco's reputation as a progressive city, committed to ending domestic violence. since ross refused, i hope that you will take the necessary steps to ensure that san francisco has a sheriff who is able and willing to respect the laws that apply to all of us, and to adhere to standards that we expect from leaders. to those who say don't take away my vote, i would like to say, and those who feel that ross is being unfairly targeted, i would like to say that had it been known that he lacks the integrity necessary for this job, i would not have voted for him, and i would suggest that those who feel that they are being deprived of their votes look to ross as the person responsible for taking away their votes. thank you. >> president chiu: thank you.
7:18 am
next speaker. >> good afternoon. my name is -- herrera. i've been a domestic violence advocate for six years, helping the community. i am concerned with this process has communicated to victims of domestic violence. every day we are working hard to make sure that victims are here from all over the world. and clear about their rights and understand that they have the right to be free from domestic violence, abuse, and control, from their partners. if ross mirkarimi is not removed from office after admitting abusing his wife it9]8x would definitely stop women from reporting, especially immigrant women, who already scared to ask for help. because of their immigrant status. i have a big problem,t??xy i men i've been listening to everybody saying that it was just a bruise, he just grabbed her. i have a problem with that. what do i tell my clients, go
7:19 am
back, it was just a bruise, i have a big problem with that. i wouldn't begb4ih doing what im doing now if i told this to myw clients. so please, i urge you to remove ross mirkarimi. thank you. >> hello. my name is -- i am a domest!z violence advocate. i work with victims to report that are sometimes afraid to report. concerned that failing to hold mirkarimi responsible for his actions will have a silencing2íç effect on survivors citywide and beyond. i believe that they wouldubv beo scared to come forward, and even more so in cases where victims stay in danger, inb situation. please, i urge you to remove ross mirkarimi fromx@ñ office as
7:20 am
victims rights could be held in the balance. things that i hear. you know, we do really hard work with this kindt?1(÷ when they ce in and ask for our support, for really hard every day, to keep them safe. we needb%8ñy someone to please, please help us keep them safe. thank you. >> president chiu:ats thanks. >> my name is barbara marquez, part of the domestic violence community. i am here to implore the board of supervisors to uphold the recommendation of the ethics and remove ross mirkarimi from office. our residents deserve to have a sheriff, someone elected by the people who uphold and respects the law, as we are also expected to do so.
7:21 am
there have been a string of recent domestic violence incidents in the media regarding high profile individuals who have been able to avoid harsh punishment. as a city, we must stand and make a statement that anyone, especially elected officials, will be held accountable for their actions. let us not forget, he did plead guilty to a crime. as a city, we must realize that the sheriff is a -- of his department. mirkarimi is seen as the leading example for his department and his employees. we deserve to be able to trust and respect our law enforcement officers. victims of domestic violence have the right to be protected by the sheriff's department without fear that our issues will be taken lightly. by removing sheriff ross mirkarimi from the board -- i'm
7:22 am
sorry, from office, the board of supervisors will affirm and ensure that any official will be accountable to the public they serve, and exhibit an appropriate standard of conduct. please make the right decision for the san francisco residents you serve, and vote for the removal of sheriff ross mirkarimi from office. thank you. >> president chiu: thankmtí# yo. next speaker. >> hi. the same extra time she had. what i will say is that there saying but i'm going to say out loud and i'm else is thinking. you have all these women groups that profess to speak for everyone. most women in san francisco have they don't know what they think. most of the women i know, that i campaigning, visibility for ross
7:23 am
all over the city, there are very few
7:24 am
do is separate a family. coming from a broken home, maybe from an1-v show of hands those m broken homes understand this one situation where two parents have a disagreement, or whatever thak is that you have no idea what's going on and that have consequence be --5w. on that kid not knowing what that consequence will mean for that kid for the rest of their life. second thing one of the most violent things you can do politically is to target somebody's family especially a democratic official and use that as a tool and understand the precedence that that sets not only for your political career or everybody else when our mayor who is pulling strings can get away with that and overturn 80,000 votes of the people here. i encourage you to think about the right thing what that means for families here in san francisco but all throughout the state and of course the country -- across the globe. thank you again for your time and do the right thing.
7:25 am
>> president chiu: thank you. next speaker. >> goo good evening, mr. presid, ladies and gentlemen, san francisco board of supervisors, and citizens in the audience on both sides of the aisle. my name is johnny, former mayoral candidate for the san francisco. ladies and gentlemen, please forgive me for not giving you eye contact. i would first like to apologize to all of the san francisco board of supervisors for having to be placed in a conflicting disadvantaged position. the court handed down their )tu(áq handed down his mind but] suspend they sheriff ross mirkarimip[kxw wito pay. you must not let -- interfere. nis not a lawless state. there wasst you cannot perform official misconduct while offb duty.
7:26 am
was this motivated by politics, bias? since 1953, therexñxnx have nevr been a specific policy in the city of san francisco forhc dealing with an off-duty city official involved in domestic violence. the most common discipline that can be imposed for a first time offender for a -- allegation of domestic violence is counseling, by he is currently undergoing. and some -- you consider this incident high caliber but the court sees it different. what the court handed down is a standard procedure. turn to each other, not on each other. when you dissolve you drift. i believe a recommendation should be that sheriff ross mirkarimi incident should be parallel with the disposition of the dui case involving a city official, a shoplifting case involving an assembly woman at nieman marx, a battery case
7:27 am
involving three public servants in the case. also to recuse yourself because of conflict of interest. since sheriff ross mirkarimi was voted in by san francisco voters. >> president chiu: thank you. next speaker. >> hi. patrick connors. there are so many things that i would love to point out, i'll never get it in in two minutes. one thing i want to mention is the city attorney, in their presentation, mentioned similarity between a case in new york, a politician named high ram mansrat removed from office. the the thing making that a parallel, he was arrested and charged with three felonies and three misdemeanors. he spashed his girlfriend's face with a glass, he slashed her,
7:28 am
and he was caught on videotape, grabbing her by the hair and assaulting her violently. it has nothing to do with mirkarimi and it's offensive that the city attorney would make that kind of connection. i'm so glad i did not vote for that guy. finally, in the paper yesterday there was a quote from a domestic violence inc. person. her name is kathy black from lacasa. she said it's about how this case is about how san francisco will respond to domestic violence. well, no it's not. if that were the case then there would be a recall. and what i would like the supervisors to do is empower the domestic violence organizations to get themselves together, and gather signatures, and recall the man, instead of enabling them to hide behind the mayor, to hide behind politics and have the work done for them.
7:29 am
so reinstate the sheriff. make them do the work that they think should be done. uphold my vote. thank you. >> president chiu: next speaker. >> good afternoon, everybody. good afternoon, mr. . and i don't like to say too much. lex-q me tell you something. we live in united states. we arepeqp believe in democracy. if we believe in democracy, we forget the vote for too many people. please don't forget the vote. return it to this family, vl)imi, to his place, and support this family, and that's6 all. evening, and god bless you. >> president chiu: next$#&xx speakersy#8. >> it
