and shelly. on behalf of japan town thank you all. i'm here to give you a brief run down on the community participation and the outreach efforts of the organization committee. this is the third version of trying to save the culture of neighborhood. still we don't have a document endorsed by the city. it starred in 2007 and in 2009 that plan was sent back to the community to work with the planning department for further refinement additional since then we've completed it. we have conducted focus groups and meetings and outreach to stakeholders and it's been a

long road. since february alone we have conducted one community meeting and outreach to over thirty community organizations property owners and mentor and resident groups. during march and april and may we have incorporated changes. this has been an inclusive and continues process. we'll be{in september. over a long pet there's going to be a change of people and different recommendations are expected. however, it is good to see overall those meetings overall those years that the vision and the goals have been largely

unchallenged and to support this it is needed to perpetuate japan town. it includes the recommendation of the cultural aspects of this neighborhood as well as further the idea of a citywide cultural tougher than that program. j h is a consensus of what we've received over the years. a couple of quotes that continue to stick in my mind includes at the early meeting one resident said japan town is a desirable market and identification is

imminent arrest another resident said we don't want a disneyland this isn't about blue tile roofs that's about a neighborhood. at the community meeting another said it's not about saving buildings but what happened in buildings. a property owner has said and he's been continual saying what we recall losing our japan town. we need some written and approved document to point out to what we want from this community examiner i'm confident that j h is that document and b will be our stack in the ground that will guide our future. we look forward to to the prelims plan felt strategy and working with the mayor's invest in the neighborhood program. in closings it's good to see

heritage strategem they've been developing is an astounding start and that's pa a big deal >> thank you. (calling names) and a commissioners good afternoon and very much. i want to thank both bob and steve for their presentations. i think they did a job that the steps our community as taken to bring it about. when we started with the planning process it's how do you make investment happen. and then you, you know, a funny thing happened on the way to the forum hey wait a minute we might lose our fabric here.

at the same time that commission was coming into being and i think this is one of the things that happen. i say okay. the right people are coming together at the right time where the ideas can be considered and given full thought. i want to thank our planners and one was paul lord who helped to forward our community as a social community as a business community and making our planning document work for that. and finally i want to say that sometimes, we get so focused on planning we wanted to do this as japan is a historic community and i really want to invite all

the world to japan town and we take them around to the restaurants in japan town. i'd like to invite you to come and taste the food and understand how for this community is to me >> thank you. yes >> i might as well say something. i think what's important you guys are support j h s that isn't itself question. i think the question is how you do that and donates in the form of the recessing resolution to adopt or endorse or whatever this is a unique document within the city in go commissioners. it isn't a zoning plan and i

think the nature of did you have to think about how that resolution is crafted. because one of the important things is a lot of falls back to the community the things like the recognition program so we recognize the cultural resources whether businesses or whatever but then what. what does that mean and how do we take it identification and do something with that. commissioner had some ideas and hope we can bring those forward in the documents. there is one of the things we recognize the policies in this plan but then as part of our resolution we want to say we want to move forward in los angeles police department

marking the peace formula and direct that to the planning staff within our work program. those are the things we should think president about between now and december >> any other member? >> yes. >> i copied this on friday as well and have enjoyedrd that. one of the things i want to bring up is i see a map of the historic resources but it's very small compared to the area that the planning department wanted study for japan town between 2005 and 2008. and i happen to be really familiar with this area going way back in time. so instead of just a map i need to see a list of the historic

resources but if that's 3 hundred and something it doesn't look to be and those are only cultural resources they need to be dlantd as much as opposed to other agricultural buildings so there's never imply confusion about what's a cultural resources and maybe it's architecture two and only you will - the funding is not important so we can't have that so can we try to get the information ahead of time. i really want to support the document thank you

those things. i think it's a hard road when the use of the community isn't coming along with the mid age and a elders of the city. l are there members of the community where a child may not be supporting that business how do those things fly beyond the recognize this is a social construct we're supporting. it's a amazing >> it's really an impressive study and report. i think it's in some ways some of the most honest reports i've seen. you focused on the central points and one this is japan vs.

japanese-americans because the two in our history have been extremely different so that will be worked out. the other problem is the 5 percent residents the shifting democrat graphics. that's something that the city can't help you with. it's got to sort of happen or it won't work and i would - my thing or impression is there has to be a are you in custody focus maybe after this sits for 45 days or a month a are you nutd focus so focus on what lived work on your recommendations because so many of them you honestly said we don't have the

money or the neighborhood involvement for this. i don't think that street furniture and a signage will make any difference at all to this because people don't go to japan town to see the nice street furniture they go there because there's something cultural they want to see and if not participate in at least observe so maybe some of it will brush off on them. so there's a lot of programs you can analysis very, very carefully but you want to look through those and say what b will work for us and what is like more on the issues.

you have issues but you really say oh, we need an economically vibrant community. so good luck it's a wonderful, wonderful effort and it's something that not just the japan community are struggling with there's all kinds of community that are worried about will my children and grandchildren care >> i want to say it's a wonderful document and is indicative of mattion and that's really why i'm in the business. it's a well put together document it's comprehensive and it's honest and overoptimistic
