enough space for customer and their bikes and that is always a challenge. as rider ship the system continues to grow, we are working hard to find new ways, to expand the number of people that we can comfortably and safely serve. having a bicycle option, available for transit users when they get off of the train to reach their destination to keep the trains and buses full by allowing the people a quick and easy solution for solving that last mile in my community, of redwood city, i want our residents to know that the workers can get off of the transit center and get on a bike that will take them to the place of employment downtown and i want future residents to know that they can live downtown without having to rely on a car. >> we want to have answers, how can i get to work and how can i run, errands and can i live downtown without owning a car or having one car for my family.

we believe that the bike share is one of the answers to those questions, it is a convenient and affordable way to encuresage the use as driving alone, abehalf of the city county, supervisor, and the chair of the san transand the board of directors, and our county, transportation authority, we believe that the bike share program encourages people to take transit, and cut their carbon footprint and make a healthy alternative for all of us and as the council member said i want to extend a personal invitation when to come to the city when we launch our own bike share program thank you very much. [ applause ] >> thank you, so much, jeff, although that san francisco and san jose get a lot of the attention, it would not be successful without the regional partners up and down. they play a critical role in the success of this program.

i now have the pleasure of introducing bicycle enthusiast jared bloomen field. he happens to be the administrator for the pacific south west region nine. he has spent two decades on the front lines of environmental production at home and internationally. he is an avid biker and has led bike tours in los angeles and hey hawaii and washington, d.c. and london and looks forward to participating in the bay area bike share program. jared? [ applause ] >> thank you, this is a real today, and the people behind me, they really did take a village to make this happen. and the work and the effort is paying off today and i am thrilled to be here and i bike to work every day and i was lucky enough to try one of these in washington, d.c., and i have tried one in london, and i tried one in paris, and these

things work. and you will get all kinds of people saying this is the best thing that you have ever seen and all kinds of people saying that this is the worst thing. in a few months from now everyone will want to be on one of these and the program is going to expand. president obama recently came out strongly and said that we need to take action on climate change and we need to do that soon. here in california, 50 percent of greenhouse gas emissions come from vehicles. not from this vehicle, we spent a lot of time when ed and the mayor and i got to work with each other we spent with the time on the fuel cell vehicles and the cng vehicles and the electric vehicle and this happens to be the world's most efficient vehicle. by far. and it was invented a long time ago and does not take batteries or electricity. and you just get on it and it moves really efficiently. if you, think about the bicycle, and one of the things that the mayor and folks in

redwood city and the entire peninsula have done is invest in bike infrastructure and this is the last crowning achievement of that. and the more people that ride bicycles every day, and this is proven by science, the safer it is to bicycle. and the reason for that is the cars get used to bicycles and the people build more infrastructure and so these beautiful, bicycles will help the streets become safer. and the other amazing fact in the introduction is that i did go on the bikes with both the mayor of la and the mayor of honolulu. la is number one congestived and honolulu is number two and the san francisco bay area is the third most congestived area. if three percent of the people driving their cars went on

bicycles just three percent, you would reduce congestion by 30 percent and so it really could have a huge impact on air quality and the air quality, management district, here in the bay area, and jack deserve a huge degree of credit and they have really championed this with many of the other partners here and the final thing, here and in all of the cities that are going to get this and is that they are going to get an economic boost and what the ride share and bike share in new york shows is that businesses adjacent to new bike lanes and the bike share programs do better because people can get off and go shopping at this safeway and go into the cal transand it is much easier to park my big reason for biking is that you don't get a ticket. there is no license plate on a bicycle. and you don't pay insurance and as was mentioned, you get a lot of great exercise. most importantly, it is really fun, these are great bikes to ride and they have seven gears

unlike the ones in dc, and only have three, this has 7. and so at least twice as good as the dc bike share program, and they have gps so you can't steal them and they have a great little thing in the front to put your bag in and as you are going to see you can wear a suit. so when i bike to work, a lot of people take their bikes on the cal train and then they are stuck at the other end and they want to go and work and they do work at google or apple or any of these places and they don't know how to get from one place to the other and so this will provide that solution and everyone should try one. and a lot of people think that they are just going to be for tourists but the reality is that they are going to be for all of us and we are going to have a lot of fun on them. thank you for making it happen, i can't wait to ride mine in a few minutes, thanks. + [ applause ] . >> don't give the mayor any ideas for generating revenue, we don't want to see any tickets on the bicycles any

time. in addition to your great work, it is motivating to hear you and hear you talk about the personal benefits of biking in your own life and how you translated that into a public policy and created and motivating all of us to ride bikes, and bike sharing as you heard from our wonderful speakers is truly a win/win for the bay area, as a resident of san jose for 30 years and a city council member being a san francisco is one thing and it is dense and it is urban, and san jose is sprawled out and the chance for the people to use public transportation and get on the bikes. i am happy that our 16 bay area bike share stations will join a network of 280 miles of completed bike ways in san jose. and they continue to expand at a rapid pace, they completed

500 bike way miles in the city of san jose over the next few years and as i speak, we are under construction of the green bike lanes project which directly connects several of the bike share stations and ultimately connect us all throughout the bay area. and all of these bike facilities create great places for the people to ride or on their own bike, the benefits are many, and bike sharing as a option will continue to grow from this point forward as you demonstrate how healthy and fun and convenient it can be. thank you for your attention this morning and i really do want to thank jack from the district and our staff for leading this effort in conjunction with so many partners at this time, i would ask the ceremony speakers to join me in the front for the ribbon cut and before they do that, i would like to encourage

together we can support your children. it's been my dream to start is a valley school since i was a little girl. i'm having a lot of fun with it (clapping) the biggest thing we really want the kids to have fun. a lot of times parents say that valley schools have a lot of problems but we want them to

follow directions but we want them to have a wonderful time and be an affordable time so the kids will go to school here. we hold the classes to no longer 12 and there's 23 teachers. i go around and i watch each class and there's certain children i watched from babies and it's exciting to see them after today. the children learn how to follow directions and it ends up helping them in their regular schooling. they get self-confidents and today, we had a residual and a

lot of time go on stage and i hope they get the bug and want to dance for the rest of their ♪

>> our concern is they are going to be here for a couple of days and everybody is going to have a great time. and we have three days of them and 362 days of everybody else using the park. ♪ ♪ >> this is the fifth year of our partnership with another planet entertainment, where another planet puts on probably the greatest music festival in america for three days here in

golden gate park. >> we work with them a lot to prevent and not have any problems. and what we have done with them is have roads built and have pieces under whatever equipment is parked. they do all of that. and then when it gets removed, they have very little damage. >> for me as a gardener and having to stay here and work after they leave, i am more than happy when i see their greening team come through and green everything up. >> we have given them pieces that they can use, and pieces that they can't use. so we are allowing them, again, because we have irrigation in the ground so they can use, and if they put up a tent they can stake a tent in some places, they can't stake a tent in other places. so we are protecting the golden gate park asset. >> so what is really special about the partnership is not just the incredible music, that about 70,000 of our closest friends are listening to right now, but for the respect that everybody has for this park and the work that we do with the

outside land music promoters to make sure that in a few short weeks, what you see out here will again be a beautiful, green, field filled with children playing soccer. >> everything pops back up, we are getting better and better as the years go by. bringing it back real quick, that is what we do. we bring the grass back and make sure that the plants are not destroyed. >> we work year round to plan for this event to make sure that all of the waste is picked up. 77 percent of all of the waste is diverted or recycling or composted. >> the gardeners work with another product operation staff to make sure that first and foremost we are protecting the incredible trees, meadows and the incredible open space that is golden gate park. >> making the crowd make a choice of which band have want to see.

so we don't have everybody going to one stage like a stampede. that didn't work for the event producers and it didn't work for us. we worked together and found solutions and it is working. >> you see a lot of people out here having a good time. you have no idea, how much work and planning has gone into this to make this sustain able and eco friendly park the greatest park in the united states. ♪ >> san francisco is one of those incredible cities in the world. i would rather be around trees, than like flat land, you know what i am saying? >> the fact that it is separate places it gives a lot of space for the amount of people that is here. i really appreciate that. ♪ >> san francisco, what is not to love? >> a blessing with the space and a blessing being here and everyone else being here on public land and sharing this music and vibration together and we are grateful for the city and the park and rec for

making it happen. >> we are keeping it cleaned by picking up, everything that we need help with, we can't do it without your help. >> it is amazing for san francisco and the music scene. this is a job creator and they hire over 3400 people. we bring in 50 to 60 restaurant and winerries. >> it is crazy. and it never stops. ♪ >> i only came to see stevie wonder. i just got a ticket. i am so excited. we are so blessed out right now. >> it is amazing, i came all the way from israel to meet the people and hang out and she was amazing. >> the environment, the people, everything. it is like everyone has so much energy. >> hey, you are beautiful. and i love you.

>> why? because... it is definitely a lot more fun than being inside. >> so far we have had zero problems. it is a long-step process, a lot of thinking and people involved. so we think that we got rid of all of the problems that could happen. they are doing it, and we are doing it and everybody is doing the best that they can. >> it is a wonderful out reach >> come. >> it is beautiful. ♪ >> here we are at the embarcadero. we are standing at one of locations for the street artists. can you tell me about this particular location, the program? >> this location is very significant. this was the very first and only location granted by the board of

supervisors for the street artist when the program began in 1972. how does a person become a street artist? there are two major tenants. you must make the work yourself and you must sell the work yourself. a street artist, the license, then submitting the work to a committee of artists. this committee actually watches them make the work in front of them so that we can verify that it is all their own work. >> what happened during the holiday to make this an exciting location? >> this would be a magic time of year. you would probably see this place is jammed with street artists. as the no, there is a lottery held at 6 in the morning. that is how sought after the spaces are. you might get as many as 150

street artists to show up for 50 spaces. >> what other areas can a licensed street artist go to? >> they can go to the fisherman's wharf area. they can go in and around union square. we have space is now up in the castro, in fact. >> how many are there? >> we have about 420. >> are they here all year round? >> out of the 420, i know 150 to sell all year round. i mean like five-seven days a week. >> are they making their living of of this? >> this is their sole source of income for many. >> how long have you been with this program. how much has it changed? >> i have been with the program since it began 37 and a half years ago but i have seen

changes in the trend. fashion comes and goes. >> i think that you can still find plenty of titis perhaps. >> this is because the 60's is retro for a lot of people. i have seen that come back, yes. >> people still think of this city as the birth of that movement. great, thank you for talking about the background of the program. i'm excited to go shopping. >> i would like you to meet two street artists. this is linda and jeremy. >> night said to me to print them -- nice to meet you. >> can you talk to me about a variety of products that use cell? >> we have these lovely

constructed platters. we make these wonderful powder bowls. they can have a lot of color. >> york also using your license. -- you are also using your license. >> this means that i can register with the city. this makes sure that our family participated in making all of these. >> this comes by licensed artists. the person selling it is the person that made it. there is nothing better than the people that made it. >> i would like you to meet michael johnson. he has been in the program for

over 8 years. >> nice to me you. what inspired your photography? >> i am inspired everything that i see. the greatest thing about being a photographer is being able to show other people what i see. i have mostly worked in cuba and work that i shot here in san francisco. >> what is it about being a street artist that you particularly like? >> i liked it to the first day that i did it. i like talking to mentum people. talking about art or anything that comes to our minds. there is more visibility than i would see in any store front. this would cost us relatively very little. >> i am so happy to meet you.

i wish you all of the best. >> you are the wonderful artist that makes these color coding. >> nice to me to. >> i have been a street artist since 1976. >> how did you decide to be a street artist? >> i was working on union square. on lunch hours, i would be there visiting the artist. it was interesting, exciting, and i have a creative streak in me. it ranges from t-shirts, jackets, hats. what is the day of the life of a street artist? >> they have their 2536 in the morning. by the end of the day, the last people to pack the vehicle probably get on their own at

7:30 at night. >> nice to me to condemn the -- nice to meet you. >> it was a pleasure to share this with you. i hope that the bay area will descend upon the plaza and go through these arts and crafts and by some holiday gifts. >> that would be amazing. thank you so much for the hard work that you do. hi, i'm lawrence. we are doing a special series about staying safe. let's look at

issues of water and sewer. we are here at the san francisco urban center on mission street in san francisco and i'm joined today by marrielen from puc and talk about water and sewer issues. what are things we should be concerned about water. >> you want to be prepared for that scenario and the recommendation is to have stored 1 gallon per person per day that you are out of water. we recommend that you have at least 3-5 days for each person and also keep in consideration storage needs for your pets and think about the size of your pets and how much water they consume. >> the storage which is using tap water which you are going to encourage. >> right. of course at the puc

we recommend that you store our wonderful delicious tap water. it's free. it comes out of the tap and you can store it in any plastic container, a clean plastic container for up to 6 months. so find a container, fill it with water and label it and rotate it out. i use it to water my garden. >> of course everyone has plastic bottles which we are not really promoting but it is a common way to store it. >> yes. it's an easy way to pick up bottles to store it. just make sure you check the label. this one says june 2013. so convenient you have an end date on it. >> and there are other places where people have water stored in their houses. >> sure. if you have a water heater or access to the water heater to your house, you can drink that water and you can also drink the water that the in the tank of your toilet. ;

not the bowl but in your tank. in any case if you are not totally sure about the age of your water or if you are not sure about it being totally clean, you can treat your water at home. there is two ways that you can treat your water at home and one is to use basic household bleach. the recommendation is 8 drops of bleach for ever gallon of water. you add 8 drops of bleach into the water and it needs to sit for 30 minutes. the other option is to boil water. you need to boil water for 5-10 minutes. after an earthquake that may not be an option as gas maybe turned off and we may not have power. the other thing is that puc will

provide information as quickly as possible about recommendations about whether the water is okay to drink or need to treat it. we have a number of twice get information from the puc through twitter and facebook and our website sf water.org. >> people should not drink water from pools or spas. but they could use it to flush their toilets if their source are not broken. let's look at those issues. >> sanitation is another issue and something people don't usually or like to think about it but it's the reality. very likely that without water you can't flush and the sewer system can be impeded or affected during an earthquake. you need to think about sanitation. the options are simple. we recommend a set up if you are able to stay in your

building or house to make sure that you have heavy duty trash bags available. you can set this up within your existing toilet bowl and once it's used. you take a little bit of our bleach. we talked about it earlier from the water. you seal the bag completely. you make sure you mark the bag as human waste and set it aside and wait for instruction about how to dispose of it. be very aware of cleanliness and make sure you have wipes so folks are able to wash up when dealing with the sanitation issue. issue. >> thank you so much,
