safely serve. having a bicycle option, available for transit users when they get off of the train to reach their destination to keep the trains and buses full by allowing the people a quick and easy solution for solving that last mile in my community, of redwood city, i want our residents to know that the workers can get off of the transit center and get on a bike that will take them to the place of employment downtown and i want future residents to know that they can live downtown without having to rely on a car. >> we want to have answers, how can i get to work and how can i run, errands and can i live downtown without owning a car or having one car for my family. we believe that the bike share is one of the answers to those questions, it is a convenient and affordable way to encuresage the use as driving alone, abehalf of the city

county, supervisor, and the chair of the san transand the board of directors, and our county, transportation authority, we believe that the bike share program encourages people to take transit, and cut their carbon footprint and make a healthy alternative for all of us and as the council member said i want to extend a personal invitation when to come to the city when we launch our own bike share program thank you very much. [ applause ] >> thank you, so much, jeff, although that san francisco and san jose get a lot of the attention, it would not be successful without the regional partners up and down. they play a critical role in the success of this program. i now have the pleasure of introducing bicycle enthusiast jared bloomen field. he happens to be the administrator for the pacific south west region nine.

he has spent two decades on the front lines of environmental production at home and internationally. he is an avid biker and has led bike tours in los angeles and hey hawaii and washington, d.c. and london and looks forward to participating in the bay area bike share program. jared? [ applause ] >> thank you, this is a real today, and the people behind me, they really did take a village to make this happen. and the work and the effort is paying off today and i am thrilled to be here and i bike to work every day and i was lucky enough to try one of these in washington, d.c., and i have tried one in london, and i tried one in paris, and these things work. and you will get all kinds of people saying this is the best thing that you have ever seen and all kinds of people saying that this is the worst thing. in a few months from now everyone will want to be on one of these and the program is

going to expand. president obama recently came out strongly and said that we need to take action on climate change and we need to do that soon. here in california, 50 percent of greenhouse gas emissions come from vehicles. not from this vehicle, we spent a lot of time when ed and the mayor and i got to work with each other we spent with the time on the fuel cell vehicles and the cng vehicles and the electric vehicle and this happens to be the world's most efficient vehicle. by far. and it was invented a long time ago and does not take batteries or electricity. and you just get on it and it moves really efficiently. if you, think about the bicycle, and one of the things that the mayor and folks in redwood city and the entire peninsula have done is invest in bike infrastructure and this is the last crowning achievement of that. and the more people that ride

bicycles every day, and this is proven by science, the safer it is to bicycle. and the reason for that is the cars get used to bicycles and the people build more infrastructure and so these beautiful, bicycles will help the streets become safer. and the other amazing fact in the introduction is that i did go on the bikes with both the mayor of la and the mayor of honolulu. la is number one congestived and honolulu is number two and the san francisco bay area is the third most congestived area. if three percent of the people driving their cars went on bicycles just three percent, you would reduce congestion by 30 percent and so it really could have a huge impact on air quality and the air quality, management district, here in the bay area, and jack deserve

a huge degree of credit and they have really championed this with many of the other partners here and the final thing, here and in all of the cities that are going to get this and is that they are going to get an economic boost and what the ride share and bike share in new york shows is that businesses adjacent to new bike lanes and the bike share programs do better because people can get off and go shopping at this safeway and go into the cal transand it is much easier to park my big reason for biking is that you don't get a ticket. there is no license plate on a bicycle. and you don't pay insurance and as was mentioned, you get a lot of great exercise. most importantly, it is really fun, these are great bikes to ride and they have seven gears unlike the ones in dc, and only have three, this has 7. and so at least twice as good as the dc bike share program, and they have gps so you can't steal them and they have a great little thing in the front to put your bag in and as you

are going to see you can wear a suit. so when i bike to work, a lot of people take their bikes on the cal train and then they are stuck at the other end and they want to go and work and they do work at google or apple or any of these places and they don't know how to get from one place to the other and so this will provide that solution and everyone should try one. and a lot of people think that they are just going to be for tourists but the reality is that they are going to be for all of us and we are going to have a lot of fun on them. thank you for making it happen, i can't wait to ride mine in a few minutes, thanks. + [ applause ] . >> don't give the mayor any ideas for generating revenue, we don't want to see any tickets on the bicycles any time. in addition to your great work, it is motivating to hear you and hear you talk about the personal benefits of biking in your own life and how you translated that into a public policy and created and motivating all of us to ride bikes, and bike sharing as you

heard from our wonderful speakers is truly a win/win for the bay area, as a resident of san jose for 30 years and a city council member being a san francisco is one thing and it is dense and it is urban, and san jose is sprawled out and the chance for the people to use public transportation and get on the bikes. i am happy that our 16 bay area bike share stations will join a network of 280 miles of completed bike ways in san jose. and they continue to expand at a rapid pace, they completed 500 bike way miles in the city of san jose over the next few years and as i speak, we are under construction of the green bike lanes project which directly connects several of the bike share stations and

have's brought a lot of stability to san francisco especially, after steady eddy were because ed has a background in administration and being tasked what getting things done and maneuvering through the san francisco policies. so to talk about the future of san francisco from the mayors prospective and the city's prospective in relationship to continue to build our economy i want to introduce the mayor of the great city and county of san francisco. mayor ed lee (clapping) >> thank you. thank you for that introduction and good morning, everyone. i know you've gotten a lot of statistics their not only interesting and accurate but

very guiding for what we need to do. thank you greg costco and bob and all of the members of san francisco chamber of commerce for extending this invitation and it's great to see a lot of the officials and the department heads to make sure and insure our cities skews. before i get started i want to take another moment to acknowledge and thank the men and women who over the past several weeks fought california's third largest wildfire the rim fire up in yosemite. and among those fighters the fire was our san francisco firefighters who stood alongside other fire department's across the country navigate over 5 thousand people fighting the

fire. and, of course, the staff and crews of the public utilities commission helped and that helped and water industry. i'm proud of their work and while we're grateful everyday for our first responders who risk their lives to protect and serve and for our police officers and firefighters who lost their lives years ago it's important we reflect on that. and certainly for our city. we've had our own including the rim fire the police and, of course, the fire department were there the first responders on a crash that will stick with me.

we're living in an extraordinary city and you can is new year it that a lot of our residents are back to work. when we took office on january lifting our unemployment rates was 9 and a half percent today's it's 5.5 percent. this streamer important year our city netted over thirty thousand additional jobs and think about what the professor said about the multipleer effects. it's not just one industry we're seeing board based job growth at every sector off our city is growing and beating the industry. we're successful because we've created the conditions that give

the investors and enterprise in our city to innovative and grow and create jobs whether or not their neighborhood or small business owner or international firms or other companies. well, here's a new stat. since 2011, 2023.6 million secret of office space - 23.6 million square feet that's 34 trans america pyramids put together. while we're licking lucky it's not all luck. navigate over the last 2 1/2 years we built the infrastructure of our city. where did we do that? let's see

we worked together to create enlightenment for jobs and attracting businesses and making the san francisco the innovation capita of the world. we worked together to build homes by providing verifies with the conversation treating e creating a housing trust fund and a working with our zoning and planning department and rezoning aspects of our city and creating a fund for permanent housing and we can be insure we don't have poverty housing. we want all san franciscans that be living side to side. we're working together to support our young people through our summer job program by

investing in 0 our skuldz and making historic investment in our budget for the san francisco unified school district. we've worked together to strengthen our neighborhoods through our innovates that's focused on 25 commercial districts throughout the city providing loans and phil vacancies and retaining the strength in the local business. we've worked hard to reenvision our waterfront with mixed seawall lots and 4 pier and, of course, we'll welcome in the gotten state warriors back home thanks for itself leadership of folks working with argue port and a city planners. a derelict pier will be

transformed that will bring thousands of people out to enjoy our waterfront. we worked to get with our community. we created the transit city plan that incorporates gov. both businesses and neighborhood for places to work with open shops and more and the development community has imbraced that with 5 office buildings adjacent to the transit center. we've worked together i get the theme now? to fund roads and parks and libs and asking san francisco voters to invest they're hard earned dollars to build infrastructure to help families skewed. we've worked together to make

san francisco the gateway to china and beyond. through china that sf it's a partnership for economic development we've attracted 2090 imply companies to 90 san francisco and we're setting our sites on latin listen to this latino sf. we've worked together to rebuild our 70 san with 5 hospitals, of course, our san francisco gunmen e general i'll be asking you for more help with furniture. of course, c pmc chinese hospital and uc san francisco. we've worked together to fix our that deficit with reform and 5

years planning all of which has maintained our strong bond rating and this summer we're going to tangle our health care obligation. well, it's bogging because of our layers focus on the infrastructure of our economy that that has allowed us to become the faster growing state not new york or los angeles but we cannot have done that without the san francisco chamber of commerce and without our business community that has vifrtd in our city in helping me create those jobs everyday. so, now this is not the time to rest in our success. i think it's time that we double down on our success by focusing

and tackling with more vigor and more resolve by looking over that horizon to see what else we should be doing. this is not a buckle ladies and gentlemen. that first city college we're going to save city he college period no, ifs or maybe so it's too important to give up open our students or training of our workforce in the future. it's the fit and second the affordable care act is important. we're focused in marking our residents and encouraging resident to purchase affordable insurance via the california

marketplace but we need to provide guidance to our local businesses how it integrates namely the health care security ordinance. this is a complicated policy issue that's why i've ask you to serve on our council with barbara garcia and many others. we'll lead a data process so we can make informed policy positions and file the gaps of everyone so we can all be covered. we're san francisco we're going to be a model for that prelims. i want to close with a few thoughts. people as me it is good economy going to continue? how are we going to extend the prosperity

that so many of our enterprise part of the answer is the everyday decision by each of you to keep investing 90 in our city. yes investing in businesses and start up and innovative ideas but investing in our young people, our schools and community and neighborhood organizations. san francisco is the greatest city in the world not just because of our bay and at all beautiful buildings but our human talent we know is at the heart of our success. so i ask you help us save city college and help us rebilled and reimage our bettered education

for our children. help us higher young people making our neighborhoods safer and stronger. i ask you to get involved and volunteer and i ask you to help with more resources to be able to do this. that's how we're going to be able to sustain this economic recovery and extend our prosperity we'll be able to continue to build the infrastructure structure for our city today and tomorrow. thank you very much

there are so many ways that the internet provides real access to real people and resources and that's what we're try to go accomplish. >> i was interested in technology like video production. it's interesting, you get to create your own work and it reflects what you feel about saying things so it gives perspective on issues. >> we work really hard to develop very in depth content, but if they don't have a venue, they do not have a way to show us, then this work is only staying here inside and nobody knows the brilliance and the amazing work that the students are doing. >> the term has changed over time from a very basic who has

a computer and who doesn't have a computer to now who has access to the internet, especially high speed internet, as well as the skills and the knowledge to use those tools effectively. . >> the city is charged with coming up with digital inclusion. the department of telecommunications put together a 15 member san francisco tech connect task force. we want the digital inclusion program to make sure we address the needs of underserved vulnerable communities, not communities that are already very tech savvy. we are here to provide a, b and c to the seniors. a stands for access. b stands for basic skills and c stands for content. and unless we have all three, the monolingual chinese seniors are never going to be able to use the computer or the internet. >> a lot of the barrier is

knowledge. people don't know that these computers are available to them, plus they don't know what is useful. >> there are so many businesses in the bay area that are constantly retiring their computer equipment that's perfectly good for home use. computers and internet access are helping everybody in the community and people who don't have it can come to us to help with that. one of the biggest problems we see isn't whether people can get computers through programs like ours, but whether they can understand why they need a computer. really the biggest issue we are facing today is helping people understand the value of having a computer. >> immediately they would say can i afford a computer? i don't speak any english. how do i use it. then they will start to learn how to do email or how to go back to chinese newspaper to read all the chinese newspaper. >> a lot of the barrier still is around lack of knowledge or confusion or intimidation and not having people in their peer network who use computers in

their lives. >> the important thing i learned from caminos was to improve myself personally. when i first came to caminos, i didn't know anything about computers. the second thing is i have become -- i have made some great achievements as an individual in my family and in things of the world. >> it's a real issue of self-empowerment where new immigrant families are able to communicate with their families at home, able to receive news and information in their own home language, really become more and more connected with the world as well as connected even inside their local communities. >> if we value the diversity of our city and we value our diverse neighborhoods in the city, we need to ensure that they remain economically viable. equiping them and equiping residents in those areas with jobs that will enable them to

stay in san francisco is critical to that. >> the important thing that i see here at caminos is it helps the low income community, it helps the women who wouldn't have this opportunity otherwise. >> the workers with more education in san francisco are more likely to be able to working that knowledge sector. where they are going to need that familiarity with the internet, they are going to find value with it and use it and be productive with it every day. and half of the city's population that's in the other boat is disconnected from all that potential prosperity. >> we really need to promote content and provide applications that are really relevant to people's lives here. so a lot of the inspiration, especially among the immigrant community, we see is communications with people from their home country but we as much want to use the internet as a tool for people to connect within the local san francisco community. >> i think it's our job as public educators to give them this access and give them this
