more inviting, more in inclusive and more livable. the images on the slide show streets full of people with seating and all kinds of different activities in a street car. the more inclusive goal is something that we are reaching out to many different communities especially the disability community to make sure this project reaches that goal. the project schedule is right now we just wrapped up conceptual design. that was our first phase, from 2011-2013. we are beginning our environmental review phase from 2013-2015. we plan to start design in 2015 which will take us to 2017. i

want to share improvement that the project is proposing. the north side crosswalk which are the confusing non-right angle crosswalks with lots of islands on the north of market street and extend the sidewalk to shorten the crossing distance. realigning and reconstructing the crosswalks. new programs including at all transit islands. aps signals throughout the corridor and minimum 15-foot pedestrian through way so nothing obstructing that 15-foot wide zone. outside of that zone is a street light zone where there are places to

sit down and different amenities, plants and things like that. a really great recap on traffic and bicycle improvements being proposed with the project, with islands and longer and wider boarding islands so they meet ada standards at least eight 1/2 feet wide and they will have all street car access. the bus will be upgraded to lower boarding buses and there will be shared lanes and marking for heavy pedestrian cross range. so we want to provide this so each view knows where they

belong. the image is an image of the current market street paving. which probably everybody is familiar with. it a curve of granite. and this is an image from our design consultants who proposed to show a paver system with a street line zone with different paving where you see the curve in a pedestrian zone and you have the street lights and you have a different type of paving material and the pedestrian through zone that 15-foot zone from the edge to the street light zone you have a different type of paver. that is proposed

by our consultant. what we are were looking at is three different options with two variables. one is to prepare the existing bricks, the second would be to replace the brick with the new paving system, either regular standard concrete sidewalk or with a concrete, or other type of pavers, this focus group convened to look at the market street and give expert opinion on the existing paving and look at other kinds of paving that could be potential. the key considerations were first, safety, the second, maintenance and durability so over time the paving would stay safe and our universal design considerations for people with disabilities

including mobility and visual and sensory disabilities. the first workshop where we broke out into small groups during the day. so just an overview of what we actually did, the process on the first day we went over the goals and on objectives of the workshop and discussed that. we shared a short presentation about the market street project and we talked about and listened to the response to that proposal and that's when we broke out and we listened to everything, all the feedback about the proposal. the image you see on the right is from day two and it shows a map of the two different routes that we took when we went out into the field and looked at the actual paving and conditions. that's on day two. the top two is we had a

recap of the first work shop and reflection on what we said and heard. we did a walk tour preparation and we did the tour and afterwards we had a round table discussion of our findings. the focus group access the market group paving in the following way. the brick paving is slick especially the newer brick is more slippery. it can stick in some wheelchairs when you are going a distance. the joints between the bricks can cause a tripping hazard and crutches and canes to catch and the granite can be

slippery. we had a great opportunity to have all kinds of harsh conditions because it was saturday in the rain. we were looking at all the paving conditions wet and cooling and dark. so the other assessment of the paving was from a visual perspective and the brick is a dark paving and speciallly when it's wet. so it reduces the visual cues. the singular paving surface doesn't distinguish the sidewalk zone, the through way from the street line zone. the image on the right is during the tour looking at the public and the private, the two different paving shows the public is the darker paving and the private

towards the building edge is very slick. we looked at many alternatives. we did look at the paving on market street but we also looked on mission street and alley ways. we saw many different types and the focus group provided an assessment for all paving materials as well. brushed concrete with coerce aggregate provided visibility and safety. the edge curb, pedestrian access travel and building edge. so the brush concrete had a texture and what you will see on the right image is a public private, the public you see on

the right and the concrete paving and the private on the left, and in fact when we showed up on saturday when it was already wet when it was coming into the building, one of our members, alberto, his crutch slipped. before we started the task of seeing in reality how that paving is very unsafe. the focus group had the following recommendation for the better market street paving. to specify paving including covers, install joints to prevent canes and crutches from catching and the image on the right is from one of our round table discussing

the paving. we came out of the focus group with design recommendations for the better matter street project, to distinguish the pedestrian through way by using different paving textures and color for visible audible and tactile clues and the third is to design consistent paving along the corridor to predict language to promote ease of use. and the conclusion about the market street brick is that it's as aesthetically pleased. it's necessary for all pedestrians especially those with disabilities and visual disability. the image on the right is from the tour looking at a brush concrete paving on

mission street. so for next steps out of this focus group, we have created a report, we drafted a report. the mayor's office on disability and better market street team have collaborated on that report and we are on a final draft. we will share that with participants and it will also be available on our website. this report will inform the policy decision regarding the sidewalk paving on market street. it will guide the better market street design team in the selection of new paving materials. this is continue the on going public dialogue to advance the universal design principals in the better market street project. you can see on the right with one of our groups walking down the street that the pavement is very wet. we got soaked and nobody

number is 415-488-4088. thank you. anymore comments? we have public comment now. i'm bob plan hold. i was one of the people that focused on this group. i want to pay a compliment and a request. not stated enough is the extraordinary insight by staff from dpw and carla and john paul in looking at the different walking surfaces already out there and having us analyze those by walking, rolling or sliding along them in that rain. it was an extraordinary amount of detail that showed in the sites and the samples they picked. it

really helped to understand how complex and how much we have to consider safety and yet safety isn't always a factor in aesthetic design. i want to compliment the staff or what they did for the tour. the advocacy request. i want to go back if you can review the powerpoint where you saw the analysis that brick may have aesthetics benefits but it's not that safe because of it's slickness, it's ability to chip and therefore have a different level of surfaces. the advocacy request is that folks, you really have to pay attention when there are hearings, when there are decisions. there is a strong advocacy interest in brick sidewalks that originally were put in san francisco in

the 70s, allegedly supposedly for some reason as a reflection of san francisco's historic character. my comment then and since, if they want that historic character, why don't they put in wood board sidewalks. the point is they are picking some aspect of history, but they have to now think there is an ada aspect to design and construction that was not present in the 70s. they have to think about the safety of all and not just the aesthetic interest of some we will have to fight because there is an historic preservation in this city and agencies for that. until you also get out there to speak our need, we can possibly wind up with having brick again still for another generation. thank

among eligible productions and it's through june 30th, 2014, and authorize additional funds into the program. again, we're not going to fund those budget it will be next year but it will put the cap. we're seeing that the web series are 0 popular and we need to continue to make sure that is adopting to the film destroy to capture all the film in our city. in the about jobs and our after the community and continuing to promote the on screen productions pr it's a streamline of web
