we're going to start with employee recognition and before we have some of the division ones first, you'll recall that when you adapt a strategic plan i guess two years ago you identified safety as the number one goal of the agency in the transportation system. and tonight there's a number of different action to a advance that goal which of which strengthen the culture of safeties throwing out the city. and one way is to recognize the top performs with regard to safety. last couple of meeting we discussed the safe driver awards by operators. general williams and our h.r. developer has developed an award that recognize the best a safety performances in the workplace.

so the least number of accidents. and based on that issues an award to maintain quarterly based on the best performance. what we look at in evaluating the sfmta they look at reduction have lost 7, 8, 9 injuries. they look at compliance with safety meetings. they look at leadership and safety and specific leadership things or management partners with staff to chief safety goals. they look at compliance based on inspectors of facilities. and we're pleased this quarter to award to the materials management section of the finance division the quarterly safety award. i'd like to ask the manage to

and staff whose who have been structurally in this. we've got brenda mitchel who is our supervisor and store keeper and another gentleman who works with me in materials. we have ricardo and this is some of them. we have others who were not able to make it. in addition we're working with a store union labor union and we're tacking some of their suggestions in making improvements and so i want to recognize them all. thank you very much for the award >> thank you very much (clapping.)

>> next, i want to ask the director of streets to recognize one of our astounding parking control officers. >> good afternoon mr. yee. >> good afternoon chair nolan and members of the board and director edward reiskin and sfmta. i'm really pleased to announce our winner maria this is quite an awe suspicious occasion it's here one year anniversary pr i hope we don't raise her expectations so much she'll expect something every year. i want to announce our manager of our enforcement division >> thank you.

good afternoon. chairperson nolan and members of the board and he reiskin. so today we would like to honor parking control officer maria for her hard work and dedication. she's been with our division for one year now. and one sunday october 27th of last year maria was patrolling an assigned area in the marina district she observed two malls in an altercation a and shortly after she heard a gunshot and causing officer co- treason to drive away from that immediate location to take cover and

safety. enforcement supervisor a bit was informed by a citizen that officer connecticut trace had assisted citizens in the area into nearby building and stores for their protection. she called dispatch and pd was brought to the scene and the suspect was apprehended. during the situation officer connecticut trace remained calm and gave significant information to the police. second occasion on october 21st of last year this it was the third day of the bart strike you can imagine the challenge of the individuals community upset about the traffic and congestion and dealing with that we were

officer connecticut trace and james officer watts who's also here today, she's got a good clan of the family. managing pedestrian traffic and contractions when a vehicle traveling east bound made an illegal line item. the officer directed the vehicle to stop to prevent hitting pedestrians. the driver refused to comply and officer connecticut trace district the vehicle made contact with officer con trace hitting here twice. officers heard officer connecticut trace call for help and stopped the driver and they made an arrest.

of aggravated assault. we would like to recognize officer connecticut trace for outstanding dedication to the agency and for quick composed action and is safety of pedestrians during the incidents. with that, (clapping.) thank you >> officer connecticut trace on behalf of the agency people of san francisco thank you for our astounding work and it's great to see all our colleagues here. it's a dangerous work and we appreciate what you do on a daily basis

there's many things i could say but i'll save you time. i'll say for those who who have worked in management there's also that one employee that you say in the back of your mind i wish i had 20 of those and ms. cleaver is that person. she's done an exceptional job. he's been selflessness in those areas where a she didn't have the expertise she makes it her business to get that expertise she's been above and beyond approach. i'm very, very happy and honored to be here today to recognize

her. (clapping.) >> thank you. thank you. >> on behalf of the board and the entire agency thank you for your work throughout the years we're deeply appreciate. >> first of all, thank you for the opportunity and this acknowledgement. i've been in the training department for go on on 8 years now and it's a tough job because we're he trying to teach new operators how to be safe and defensive. and to be a good show for the company. even though i'm being acknowledged we're an excellent strong team. we're under mr. anderson who knows all the rules and

regulations. he's our fear also leader and others. we have one of our train supervisors and leaders. and mr. paul pernicious and mr. ed thomas. that team has motivated me to contribute as much as i can to make this company be one of the leading transportation companies in the country. thank you for the acknowledgement. and i will see you next time (laughter) (clapping.) >> so moving on to a couple of other quickly items. i wanted to report out the city completed last year's combined

charities campaign raising more than $2. million to sport 6 federations that support hundreds of nonprofits. our agency sfmta was one of the largest atrocities behind the police and airport and i guess that makes us number 3 or 4 in trigsz modern nine hundred millions out of the pocket of sfmta. jan was our coordinated and did a good job of railing the employees to give back to the community as public servant and as employees of the city. and finally, though you've probably heard about this we've finalizing our fragment for the politely for tcorporate employe

you shuttles we've announced that with supervisor weiner and supervisor chiu among many others. this is a proposal that will be coming to you two weeks an january 21st accounting and it follows in the gfrnls committee we've been working on this since the transportation authority completed a study working with the providers and the different folks within the agency from the muni staff to put together a proposal. i think you know the shuttles provide a transit service within the city with an estimated 035 thousand brgdz a day so they're a transportation agency.

the estimated reduction ever 45 million vehicle miles as a result of those vehicles keeping the carbon from the environment but there's been conflicts such as muni bus stops and impacting muni vehicles traveling on some streets people don't feel are appropriate for vehicles of those sizes. we're proposing a pilot program where shall we'll designate a certain amount of bus stops out of the 25 hundred bus stops. they would have to pay for their permits to pay for our costs and adhere to a number of the costs

to make sure they don't impact the muni costs. we'll be bringing that to our next meeting. so that concludes my presentation. any members of the public who wish to speak on director reiskins report? >> well, we'll turn them all on. try that one >> i could speak really loudly. like i said i don't know whether this goes in 6 or 7 but follow-up items last year roberta if i could have east side ear for the moment.

last year, we had talked about a followup hearing on the minnesota metro service as a rider i certainly noticed that service in my opinion has gotten a great deal better. some of the items have been fixed there's still the occasional thing. i want to hear from mr. haley so the folks know we're paying attention to this so i lived with some permission in from the chairman request that be done through a hearing with mr. haley here >> we have that skeleton for the february 4th. >> the second thing we talked about was some sort of you follow-up on the cat companies providing information because it's more appropriate to report

program. it's next to e.r. taylor elementary school and next to the branch library. it's a project that's intended to install things on the foyer corners traffic is light moving through the intersection but the main purpose is to enhance the pedestrian visibility as they stand across the street. those are a lot of school age children crossing throughout the day. this school has a higher than normal educating of children having being dropped off any vehicles. they hope to enhance the safety >> gentlemen please. through safety enhancement and improvements around the site using. >> okay gentlemen please.

mr. yee continue, please >> we had in the proposal both a 5 and 6 foot alternative for you to consider. we at staff recommended the 6 foot because, you know, it's a little bit less than the guidelines from complete street guidelines but it represents a very good compromise between the needs of the pedestrian safety concerns and also the he fire department who has expressed some southerners about potential potentially encroaching into the center line. so we recommend this b be part of the proposal >> excellent so members of the board want to hear from the public. >> one classification and a mr.

joe e yee with those bulb outs is there something that will prevent vehicles from going up on the sidewalks. i know that there's a raised apron that vehicles go across >> if you put those to delineate the edge or raise edges they present other obstacles where pedestrians trip over them or vehicles don't track properly they'll cause more damage then touching the education e edge of the curb. so all the tests we've conducted with the presented using cones by driving slowly and maneuvering through the right turn it can >> but if they miss calculate

their turn they, go over the curb. >> yes. >> it's nothing but a normal curb. >> thank you very much. supervisor weiner we know you're here for this item. good afternoon supervisor >> good afternoon directors. i'm here today to express my very strong support for the staffs recommendation for this important bulb out. in fact, this was a lead site for walk to school day and the safe rotates program is important and i'm glad the sfmta is moving forward in terms of of implementation. you know as well as i do we have a crisis in our city in terms of

pedestrian safety and pedestrian accidents i don't use that term crisis lightly per we've had a string of very, very travenlg accidents in our city. it's critical that we move ahead with our safety strategy. the policymakers of san francisco the mayor and the board of supervisors and the voters have all given very, very clear policy derivative that bulb outs are a key part of our pedestrian safety strategy. the mayor issued a document that highlighted bulb outs as a key safety and the streets plan was adapted unanimously by the board of supervisors and relies on bulb outs and proposition b was setting aside bulb outs.

we know that slower turns by vehicles as well as improved be visibility between he pedestrians and vehicles. we finally, have funding because of proposition b and regional funding to do the bulb outs and wre we need to move forward. i encourage you to proof those bulb outs. i want to acknowledge we've been in dialyses with the fire department and he know the fire department has expressed concerns about the bulb outs. i do believe that bulb out and pedestrian safety are consistent with fire safety so i encourage you to adapt the staff recommendation >> anyone else care to address the board. >> natalie verdict.
