years if you'll rise and let people see who you are. obviously, we can't introduce all of you, please rise and let people see who you are my mother minnie. many years ago (clapping) passed on she would have been a

one hundred and 5 here today, the 11th of february. at one time when she was evidenced some degree of illness we decided to have a reunion every february 11th to let her know how much we loved and respected her. we had no idea thechs faking it it took those 11 years or more but the family hadn't been together frankly and that's in many, many years. when president huffman and the assembly members in the black caucus led by mr. hall said they were going to do this bridge thing and they did it now let's have the unveiling of the sign

they said no let's wait until black history month and do it on my mothers birthday and that will mean something to family and the american people. so my family came from whatever they were my sister has 12 children and another sister 9 boys. one sister had one brother and one brother had none but they were willing all here so, please give my family a round of applause for sharing this day and moment (clapping) you want them to stand up. why do i have to also give orders.

only about half of them stand up (laughter) they came in as early as saturday and they've been here all the days moving around renewi renewing friendships because they've traveled with me and i share this moment with them on this occasion of bridge naming. i also share it with a whole host of number one family members. i have treasured my friendships with a collection of people from around the country politically and socially and culturally and educationly and business world you name it. and those friendships and those relationships have just meant a

whole lot and you who have shown up on this occasion a couple of you i didn't know were alive and you showed up. even earlier this morning i walked through the door and said wait a minute where do did you come from. but i'm floored with the incredible level of you who have shown up for this occasion and i'm deeply honored. you made it possible for me really to begin to brag legitimately

(laughter) now, mr. mayor, mr. mayor craig surone-on-one was on the command staff when i was mayor i don't understand why he didn't have better control now but he's cheap (laughter) it has been frankly

(laughter) eleanor had that responsibility (laughter) and this business one of the components of leadership is also making sure mr. mayor you have somebody to blame (laughter) and the one you select make sure they're a solid in foundation so they can take it and absorb it and keep on moving. many of you around this as i

look around we thought, you know, two or 3 hundred people would show up and lvld there's a hell of a lot more people showing. there are a few chairs in a small place but we wanted to celebrate i didn't realize you didn't have nothing to do on a saturday morning and needed a cup of coffee. there was a great debate on the staff side presentation of this event said we better do a tent because it had rained in california in almost a year we need to do a tent because we

don't want people to get wet etc. and no you can't do it on the inside and they gave us the count down date and it kept raining and raining and i said let's do that on my mothers birthday and they don't know that woman she's got a relationship with the lord. under the circumstances the sun will be shining on her oldest boy on the dated when you do the bridge (clapping) and so credit my mother with the sunshine. and clarence were up correct to ask that question because when alice finally, called me they did this in secret he didn't want me to be involved taught u

at all for fear i'd cause it to fall. they were keeping it out of my sight completely until some reporter named a journalist called me up and asked how did you organize straight this bridge for being named after you. i said what are you talking about he said they're talking about naming the by a bridge after you. and i said that is to the o not possible i'm two controversial and i'm alive (laughter) and, of course, they said well they are. i called eleanor and said eleanor find out what's happening with the bridge naming

and she got back to me and i called alice and alice hung up she didn't want to hear me she was going to do it no matter what. i'm glad she hung up it's occurred i'm now about to have the unveiling of the bridge itself but they screwed up they got the wrong end of the bridge. i share you a view that's what happens to black people in america you get the achievement and they change the rules. that's kind of the way it works (laughter) but it is an incredible on a serious note frankly an incredible achievement and

something i want to enjoy day in and day out. i love the cat on the streets read it was going to be named after me he said i'm kind of a tea bargain guy i don't like you at all but i'm going to enjoy rolling over you everyday (laughter) i always want to be accommodating. i'll tell you how significant this is from the african-americans started up. this kids in the school yard i go to make a speech to the school and i know, you know, i've been out of politics for awhile officially.

(laughter) unelected for a while and i warranted through the school yard and the little kids stopped and kept checking me out i'm hoping they'll think i'm j z or small business. i go in the school and as i start to come out this little 8-year-old black kid who has all his little friends lined up because he clearly in this highly integrated school has been telling them about me and probably bragging about me he said hey administers who did you used to be? (laughter)madministers who did you used to be? (laughter)iadministers who did you used to be? (laughtesadministers who did you used to be? (laughtetadministers who did you used to be? (laughteeadministers who

(laughter) but just the collections of the members of commissioner caisley and board of supervisors. the delegation from atlanta couldn't get here because they couldn't leave expect one member of the delegation left a day early and the achieve city council councilmember is here and a whole bunch of other people who came from atlanta from connecticut and frank is here doing what they do well, to celebrate this occasion. i wish i could cite each and every one of you who are activity and applicants for continuation. i'm just overwhelmed by the show

of support and i hope that is as the years unfold and if the projections stated by mr. hall were true and that in the form that others will use that bridge if others will use my life and what i've done and the methods and levels of service in spite of the terms that newsom has used to describe if they use my life as a means to participate in making public policy exports and imports public policy then they'll be doing it on behalf of other people. that's the basis of my life and

the basis that i think ultimately of my success and i'm just delighted that the affirmation of that produce is now enshrined by name in the second most often used bridge in this great country. and i say to each and every one of you i'm just delighted and i'll continue to be delighted. i do and i will practice bragging rights every time i get a chance (clapping) i may even enhance as i according do i may enhance why the reasons the bridge. i was at an event recently and i said something to somebody and i

remembered that there was a guy who owned a phrase that i absolutely loved. and turned out to be one of my friends. i said to him as i close my remarks on the bridge naming i want you to say exactly what i wished had been my original closing line and iowa with that, let me ask my friend to say that at this moment. my life has been for me a work of art in every way and i simply tell you i guarantee it >> i guarantee it

>> hi. welcome to san francisco. stay safe and exploring how you can stay in your home safely after an earthquake. let's look at common earthquake myths. >> we are here at the urban center on mission street in san francisco. we have 3 guest today. we have david constructional engineer and bill harvey. i want to talk about urban myths. what do you think about earthquakes, can you tell if they are coming in advance? >> he's sleeping during those earthquakes? >> have you noticed him take any special? >> no. he sleeps right through them. there is no truth that i'm aware of with harvey that dogs are aware of an impending

earthquake. >> you hear the myth all the time. suppose the dog helps you get up, is it going to help you do something >> i hear they are aware of small vibrations. but yes, i read extensively that dogs cannot realize earthquakes. >> today is a spectacular day in san francisco and sometimes people would say this is earthquake weather. is this earthquake weather? >> no. not that i have heard of. no such thing. >> there is no such thing. >> we are talking about the weather in a daily or weekly cycle. there is no relationship. i have heard it's hot or cold weather or rain. i'm not sure which is the myth.

>> how about time of day? >> yes. it happens when it's least convenient. when it happens people say we were lucky and when they don't. it's terrible timing. it's never a good time for an earthquake. >> but we are going to have one. >> how about the ground swallowing people into the ground? >> like the earth that collapsed? it's not like the tv shows. >> the earth does move and it bumps up and you get a ground fracture but it's not something that opens up and sucks you up into haddes.

>> it's not going anywhere. we are going to have a lot of damage, but this myth that california is going to the ocean is not real. >> southern california is moving north. it's coming up from the south to the north. >> you would have to invest the million year cycle, not weeks or years. maybe millions of years from now, part of los angeles will be in the bay area. >> for better or worse. >> yes. >> this is a tough question. >> those other ones weren't tough. >> this is a really easy challenge. are the smaller ones less stress? >> yes. the amount released in small earthquakes is that they

are so small in you need many of those. >> i think would you probably have to have maybe hundreds of magnitude earthquakes of 4.7. >> so small earthquakes are not making our lives better in the future? >> not anyway that you can count on. >> i have heard that buildings in san francisco are on rollers and isolated? >> it's not true. it's a conventional foundation like almost all the circumstances buildings in san francisco. >> the trans-america was built way before. it's a pretty conventional foundation design. >> i have heard about this thing called the triangle of

life and up you are supposed to go to the edge of your bed to save yourself. is there anything of value to that ? >> yes, if you are in your room. you should drop, cover and hold onto something. if you are in school, same thing, kitchen same thing. if you happen to be in your bed, and you rollover your bed, it's not a bad place to be. >> the reality is when we have a major earthquake the ground shaking so pronounced that you are not going to be able to get up and go anywhere. you are pretty much staying where you are when that earthquake hits. you are not going to be able to stand up and run with gravity. >> you want to get under the door frame but you are not moving to great distances. >> where can i buy a richter

scale? >> mr. richter is selling it. we are going to put a plug in for cold hardware. they are not available. it's a rather complex. >> in fact we don't even use the richter scale anymore. we use a moment magnitude. the richter scale was early technology. >> probably a myth that i hear most often is my building is just fine in the loma prieta earthquake so everything is fine. is that true ? >> loma prieta was different. the ground acceleration here was quite moderate and the duration was moderate. so anyone that believes they survived a big earthquake and their building has been tested

is sadly mistaken. >> we are planning for the bigger earthquake closer to san francisco and a fault totally independent. >> much stronger than the loma prieta earthquake. >> so people who were here in '89 they should say 3 times as strong and twice as long and that will give them more of an occasion of the earthquake we would have. 10 percent isn't really the threshold of damage. when you triple it you cross that line. it's much more damage in earthquake. >> i want to thank you, harvey, thanks pat for
