5:30 am
>> commissioner lee. >> i was there only a few weeks ago actually. you know, since it's a hotel there's security it's kind of nice to have something there i only knew passing through that tunnel was the green door massage >> the green door uh-huh. >> yeah. i don't go there>> of course, not (laughter). >> but i went to a party under my friend ken through a party and i was surprised at the amount of people so i think it's great it's something only 10 o'clock; right? >> i don't see any more comments please have a seat and we'll invite the police to come
5:31 am
up officer. >> steve ma empathy of the please station we're recommending approval they had a previous license and done some remodeling where the larger room in the back is now ail tables and chairs and stuff so it was nice the previous license was nice because it was a hotel first and foremost so they didn't want to make their guests angry as far as noise i can't think of a single complaint it is a great fit for the area and we wish them well. >> thank you. any any public comment on the barrooms application a seeing none,
5:32 am
public comment is closed. commissioners anyone have a motion >> i motion to approve. >> i'll second. >> all right. let's take a vote. commissioner hyde. commissioner joseph. commissioner lee. commissioner campagnoli. president tan so moved. we'll move into our final permit this is the piano fight >> it's on taylor just to clarify this is not the fight club some people were confused it is as you know the old original jose that burnt down years ago and they plan to feature everything from the drama plays and stand up and the applicants met with the officers and they've recommended some
5:33 am
conditions they're in your bind if you want to look at them and the applicants are fine fair undergoing more construction. >> good evening, everyone thanks for taking the time to let us speak. i'm rob and this is dan williams we're the owners and operators of piano fight we're a theatre that started here in the city in 2007. we started with just a 3 man team and since then about 50 company artists we have visual artists and dancers oiblg writers and a producers. we've done about 5 hundred different shows. we've been performing all over the city and a by the way, and
5:34 am
up and down california we're building this into a multiple stage complex with a full bar and we have a 90 seat theater and with a cab are a stage. what else. the kind of performs you're likely to see it's a lot of comedy we do a lot of new work by locals. we're not going to do any shakespeare we do do exclusively work by locals it tends to be a lot of commodity and improve and stand up that kind of we have a music and film department we
5:35 am
want to share infrastructure that's the hardest thing for the artists to build an infrastructure that works for them because it's competitive and time consuming and difficult so if we make that process easier that's our thing. we want to make it easier for the audience when you go out they want diner beforehand so you don't have to think about where you're going to go over the show that's the project we're here to talk about. we're excited to be in the neighborhood that block, of course, we've been in and around that area for a long time on mission street between 5 and 6th
5:36 am
street running that for 4 years so we know the area it's difficult a few blocks up but we'll be there for a while in the tenderloin if you have any questions, i'll be happy to answer them >> one quick question before i pass it on i think telling from is is it a name. >> it's the master tenant at the space but you when we say piano fights it's the production company and will be the company that's responsible for all entertainment in the space. >> all right. commissioner joseph and commissioner hyde. >> i love that you have sound locks on the doors what kind of sounds like on the outside.
5:37 am
>> double sheetrock. >> we have double sheetrock on the walls and ceiling and with installation with regular forearm. >> did you test it. >> we have not measured the tests but we've been out and did a little bit of testing. >> that's great your raefrl room is it for the performance. >> you're going to do theater and concerts. >> maybe that is right driven maybe a small acoustic set that
5:38 am
i amplified music is not what we want. >> can you run all those rooms together at the same time. >> yes. >> without blending. >> we have double sheetrock installation as well too to help. >> besides the double sheet installation and the acoustic glue is there other awe civics. >> once we finish painting to help with the sound with the transition through the walls. >> could you tell me about the presentations and maybe who you talked to at the attained and stuff like this. >> we've talked to a few different groups in the we've done a lot of kind of business
5:39 am
outreach. and kind of more residential outreach we're still working on but obviously there's the best hotel right above us we've been in touch with the management and across the street what's it called? the tenderloin headquarters and we know the management in the hotel. and let's see city impact purchased the property and there you go to, moving into the 4 story building and i don't believe any residents but as a tenant but, of course, they'll be our landlords also it will pay to be on good terms with them. we've taken part in the two take
5:40 am
back a block that cesarean director i forget the organization but they're open turk and that's been really great in terms of reaching out. it's a challenge to enact with the residents on a basis and to know who's living there and not we do our best to keep the presence on the street and really looking forward to tearing down part of the waltz and we'll be running classes for students and younger kids and then supporting kids from the community to take part in that we want to be a part of the foundational system for the community so - >> that's great commissioner
5:41 am
lee. >> can you explain on the audit community when this place becomes popular can you explain how you are handle people i see how you're handling the line but when the show is over do you let them on this their way. >> we designed the space at the 965 mitigation it has a lobby with no security guard at night we needed to get people into the space but they're waiting in a building lobby but we designed the space so the restaurants bar would be a more general hang out place. in between when you left the that is right and stepped outside.
5:42 am
the idea there's a little cab are a stage not to have entertainment right there when you come out of a show you don't want to go into another show you may want to hang out and sit and chat about what you saw. hopefully, the space in front will provide that in addition to that we plan on staffing the security staff the whole time we're having the shows. we have 3 security cameras at each entrance and 15 feet around our facade and 5 feet around the building as well >> you plan to have at least one outdoor doorman to watch the
5:43 am
sidewalk. >> yeah. and it is a 47 liquor license so you wouldn't be tasked with the situation of iding he will be focused on the security although actually he would be iding. he's posted outside >> he's also backed up by a couple of floor managers probably one of the three of us one of us will be on site pretty much on site anytime there is entertainment going on not like a bartender stuck behind a bar someone who can quickly get to an incident. >> like the golden gate that is
5:44 am
right wherever they have a show they make people feel comfortable to going to their cars do you have that sort of thing? >> can i make a suggestion do you 3 guys intend to take the lead course. >> yes. >> so if you're going to be floor managers you can back up the security. >> yes, ma'am. >> just checking any other commissioners questions. >> all right. you guys can have a seat. we would like to invite the police up to speak on the conditions >> good evening. i'm officer torres representing the
5:45 am
tenderloin police district we had a chance to speak with the applicants and satisfied with their business plan we recommend approving this permit with the conditions if you like i can read them. the first condition is that the permit holder should conform to the attached information good neighbor policy under the planning code. i gave them a copy of the condition. condition two no noise audible outside the establishment during the daytime or night time hours we have n them in front of us >> okay. we ask you put those conditions on this permit if it gets approved if you have any questions i mean, i'll answer
5:46 am
them. >> commissioners any questions for officer torres? >> i would like to mention also that the old original jose restaurants has been vacant for a several years and somewhat has gotten deteriorated and we'd to see a business like this go there it will clean up that block. >> all right. thank you. all right. i don't see any questions from commissioners, thank you. is there any public comment? on piano fight? >> yes. mark you have a short comment. i've seen a lot of young people moving into this neighborhood like in the new york times but i saw this earlier tonight and
5:47 am
it's very interesting there's to peripheral people who have a heart i cringe when i look at the locations on eddy but the two years this project has been in the works lee works is in there now and the browsers are in the right place and those guys are great. it's an amazing thing they went through a good attitude and the city keep e kept beating on this and beating on them but those are great stand up great guys and, you know, if you watch this on tv welcome to san francisco because you guys are great. thanks >> thank you.
5:48 am
any other any public comment? ? all right. seeing none, public comment is closed. we'll take it as a commission now. >> okay. i would like to move to approve this permit and i think number had the loitering is taking care of within a hundred feet of any po e so strike number 4 and number 5 i'd like to remove the words upon request or so it will read electronic surveillance shall be utilized and a electronic recording shall be available for the police department with a valid search warrant.
5:49 am
so those conditions okay. is there a second actually? >> i second it. >> any other decision? let's take to vote >> on the motion with the police conditions omitting condition 4 and taking outnumber 5 upon that request or replacing that with valid search warrant commissioner hyde. commissioner joseph. commissioner lee. commissioner campagnoli. president tan. so moved >> congratulations guys good luck. our last two items shall be fairly quick is commissioners, comments or questions anything people want to note >> i have a couple of things i wanted to ask about first, i wanted to ask about pursing 10 b
5:50 am
is this something that the staff or commissioners with going to do i'm unclear where that's gunning - gone. i guessed i was less than clear about the form this should move to t to the police commission so what's your - my i was thinking if you needed help formulate that from the commissioners or something like that >> i'll watch that hearing and let you know if i do. >> okay. thank you. also you know, i was - when i was hoping that when we got someone in the mayor's office instead of every time we have a commission hearing we hear from
5:51 am
the police we could alternative it between the police and mayor's office we hear the same thing every week but to hear what's going on with the mayor's office so alternating those i think hearing the police ever hearing i'd like to hear other things as well like what's going on with the mayor's office of economic development >> all right. that's duly noted i don't know if there's comments. >> i love the purpose tonight i love the ball they were great and if you haven't bought our tickets to the san francisco night life and the san francisco
5:52 am
entertainment community and come to the san francisco night life awards monday february 24th at the castro that is right. >> i have a couple of more. >> i think i kind of like to hear i don't want to eliminate the police i kind of like hearing that for some reason but i think it's a good idea about having knowing what's going on with the mayor's office too. i mean we're here for the small business >> who would be presenting that. >> mr. ben. >> and you know it was something i was thinking of. and also i was hoping that in september at our first meeting in september that we could have kind of an overall report about limited live permits and as well
5:53 am
as that i've been in contract with jane kim's office hearing from people who have applied for live permits >> in september. >> also after the summer. >> yeah.. and then final someone said something about night conclude problems. everyone knows that night life and night lounges don't create bad problems but the people do. i heard it and i want to make sure i mentioned that >> all right. any other commissioner comments. >> i think it's important that the police weigh in so we know
5:54 am
what's going on. we're interested in public safety >> i agree i was just offering that up as something we could hear two things and officer ma empathies doesn't have to come every two weeks i don't mind hearing it also. >> i depends upon shawn's reports he will yes, ma'am e encompass those it has not been a the case shawn has been here and i'll take that under advertisement. >> i'm going to be missing the next meeting so commissioner hyde that will be your show. let's move on >> you're going what are you
5:55 am
bringing me back. >> a ca wall. >> any public comment on everything we've just discussed as a commission. no seeing no, the finally is the additional agenda items for future meetings. all right. there is none so we can now adjourn this meeting. have a good night >> i tried to think about this
5:56 am
room as the dream room, where we dream and bring some of those dreams to life. i feel very blessed that i have been able to spend the last 31 years of my life doing it my way, thinking about things better interesting to me, and then pursuing them. there are a lot of different artists that come here to work, mostly doing aerial work. kindred spirits, so to speak. there is a circus company that i have been fortunate enough to work with the last couple of years. i use elements of dance and choreography and combine that with theater techniques. a lot of the work is content- based, has a strong narrative. the dancers have more of a theatrical feel. i think we are best known for our specific work. in the last 15 years, spending a
5:57 am
lot of time focusing on issues that affect us and are related to the african-american experience, here in the united states. i had heard of marcus shelby and had been in join his work but never had the opportunity to meet him. we were brought together by the equal justice society specifically for this project. we were charged with beginning work. marquez and i spent a lot of time addressing our own position on the death penalty, our experiences with people who had been incarcerated, family members, friends of friends. pulling our information. beyond that, we did our own research.

to create a picture that resonated with humanity. it is the shape of a house. in this context, it is also small and acts like a cell. i thought that was an interesting play on how these people make these adjustments, half to create home. what is home for these people? the home is their cell. people talk a lot about noise -- very noisy in prisons. that is interesting to me. looking at the communication level, the rise of frustration of being caged, wondering, where does redemption fit into the equation here? [singing]
5:59 am
i think both of us really believe the death penalty is wrong, and is flawed for many reasons. the list is as long as my arm -- about several others. we feel this is important for both of us, personally, to participate in the debate of this issue in a way that we can help people frame it for a conversation.
