fun. i've been taking my niefrts go shopping on fillmore the shopping is no longer as much fun they're not spending the money in the big stores the heavi heavily advertised. i don't think we're going to find unique things in chain stores >> thank you. let me call a few more names. david and others (calling names) >> hi, i'm here to speak in support of rag on bone.
12:31 pm
while i don't live in san francisco i spend a lot of time in the city on fillmore street. i'm here today a because rag on bone it special i would come into san francisco and fillmore street to shop because rag on bone is there. i want to point out the obvious. they're technically a formula retail but comparing them to other brands doesn't make sense. sure it's easy for you'll see will that leveling stores s are in the same category but it's not capable. that's like comparing taco bell
12:32 pm
with other coffee stores. i personally like rag only bone because it's one 0 of a kind it's an amazing experience for me to purchase in rag on bone. it would be nice to not purpose the rag on bones online site. it would be a convenience and a great edition to san francisco. again, i urge you to support rag on bone and i thank you, commissioners. thank you >> thank you. >> hi, i'm david peers i want to cover this in 3 sections one i want to talk about what i do in san francisco. we just were able to go visit in
12:33 pm
new york i want to say why did it is a good thing open fillmore street. i love san francisco i got here in 487 in the navy that was my first experience coming up on christmastime and fell in love with the city. really getting to know the city in the service and ended up studying be architecture and started working for a furniture place. starting in business in san francisco is a challenge. at this point it was coming up on the first.com space states of expensive to have a space so we were very scrap i didn't we
12:34 pm
built the furniture anyway. that was about 14 or 15 years ago. over those years met a woman lives here in san francisco we started 2 restaurants we're 16 people now interest we're lucky to be here. it doesn't maintains to live in san francisco san francisco but i love it. we're making the picks and shovels for this gold rush which is the second.com if, if you will. we'll lucky to have relationships with museums and remake residential furniture we have a great list of clients. rag only bone reached out to us
12:35 pm
relationships are the most important part it's not about making the furniture and selling it it's the relationships those are the long-standing things we seek basically. so rag on bone reached out to us and we are not sure - does that mean >> 30 seconds. >> rag on bony august if it's a good formula we should take it into the city. there's not another rag on bone a thousand miles from us. it's exactly the way they do business we do that. we manufacture ourselves and so do they. thank you >> thank you. next speaker.
12:36 pm
please. >> hello, i'm been a teacher at the dr. = could be school for 17 years i'm here to read a letter from our principal. before i do i would like to remind everyone we're located 3 and a half blocks from fillmore street you highly me may not be a merchant on fillmore street we're just as an important part of the community as any other entity nearby. i appreciate the in depth relationship rag on bone has created with our school. the following is a legislator from our principal. dear commissioners please join me in sporting rag on stores at the 2 thousand 60 fillmore and
12:37 pm
authorizing their conditional use. partners that care about the lives and education of children in the neighborhood is crucial. we're excited at the prospective of what rag on bones grant will impact our relationship. dr. will cot school has a talented faculty although we're not without your challenges. funding the right type of program for our students an important. funding what our students need and that's a challenge. while rag on bones impacts our

opportunities to offer students chances for programs they maintained have access to otherwise. those in the course partnerships are not what we see evidence and something we wish we saw a lot more of. i don't think that academic achievements are - most of these deal with 340ir79 and a vulnerable populations as bigger scalds. doctor will could be is prominently an african-american and latino school it invests with populations in order to see the characteristic k45u6789s

reduced is not something we want to see. the start up relationships has already happened - >> thank you ma'am, you can submit our letter for the record if you want. >> the principal asked me to read it. >> we have it in the record. >> thank you next speaker please. good afternoon commissioners i'm ben. i work in the retail leasing industry. i wasn't not involved with the rag on bone transaction but i want to share thoughts from the commercial leasing prospective. first there's a reason that retailers come to specific
12:40 pm
sites. rag on bones commerce exist and their servicing a customer base it deserves their retail. we heard some talk oflogies a local laundry mat it's unfortunately, to lose a service but by not approving a deal you have several mrumgz and trktsz and attorneys and everyone else involved with the lease negotiations that lose income and the ability to feed and support themselves as well. lastly i know it's important to note that fillmore has become an international high street to its designation for travelers to so far. i think by not approving the
12:41 pm
lease to rag on bone you're sending a message you're going to dissuade others and further to encourage traffic to come to this neighborhood to spend money by not praying n this retailer. rag on bone shows the desperate level it's an "x" particular example of a business built on passion and i recommend that the planning commission please support this for the inventcy of the neighborhood as well >> thank you. >> hi, i'm laura porter i'm the business manager we have 3
12:42 pm
stores on fillmore street privately owned. i want to say that fillmore street is a specific designation for tourists and neighborhood shoppers. it was what is the most unique shopping experience that a small independent mostly privately owned store street can offer that's the complete oppose of union square. and to add another formula retailer to fillmore street is a mistake because people come to fillmore street is the variety the small shops that sell a collection of items that are completely different than other places so to allow another formula retailers to come in
12:43 pm
shows we're fine with it and that opens it up to more formula retailers coming then it defeats the purpose of why people come to fillmore in the first place. we care about our neighborhood and have a customer base that comes to us for the clothes but also for the feeling they get from a small business privately owned business and what it offers that is different than what we get when they go to a chain store i think that they'd percent of the street is fashion sellers. thank you >> thank you. next speaker.
12:44 pm
>> good afternoon madam president. i'm holly the sister of hydro i didn't and she's sorry she couldn't be here but along with the other clothing retailers they're doing the by annual clothing buy in negotiation o new york. i imply in from seattle it's the land of star bukdz and cost could it's shiny and a ultimately and completely bland. sadly there are unique priorityers to be found in the city. 13 years ago hydro i didn't and i came here. she's invested her money and heart and innovation open fillmore 3 ventures her

commitment is good. the personally of fillmore we didn't choose chestnut street lots of fresh air fillmore didn't have the same feel of other streets. we very carefully yoithd collections gives us a good feel. we have one of the finest neighborhoods on the west west coast and to protect the neighborhood from commercialism. it seems we're reaching a tipping point of saturation. we have become a soulless

street. formula retailer a burdening the fillmore district. one by one businesses will retire and the cost of high-end stores can absorb we can't. to preserve our special place we sell rag on bone and love their line but we have the rag on line for our customers. if the city who is as social aware and weighing as san francisco and more importantly specific heights can't do it. we should be the example of the wellspring from the entrepreneurial spirit and we

care about our local environment >> thank you very much for your time. >> thank you. >> thank you. next speaker, please. >> madam president and commissioners i'm thomas the president of the fillmore merchants association. four years ago a realtor saw the opportunity on fillmore and asked department stories across the country and he recruited them to come to fillmore street it's pacific heights the w50eg9 it place in the country you have to buy out leases and pay you whatever it takes to get a lease on fillmore street before you get to 11.
12:48 pm
it has worked magnificently. 22 high fashion retailers have opened on fillmore street as well as a handful of assessors and cosmetic companies. the rent have denounced, the landlord have been happy and deep corporate pockets can pay the rent but small businesses and furniture and 4r5ur7d mats and once the hardware store is now a french both technical. across the street we're talking about a fillmore shop is another french label. and next door is a dutch babbling label with the 4 stores around the world. yet none of these stores is
12:49 pm
considered a chain store under our formula retail ordinance. we believe that definition is wrong. we urge you to change the definition to include spin-offs from existing stores. we've set it up as a race if you can get to fillmore street before you get to 11, in fact, the ordinance doesn't say you want stories that have less than 11 stores when they apply and very quickly the 5 standards for determining whether or not the permit should be granted the existing formula retail uses it

going up fast. the availability of similar retail uses we're are wash in new fashion places we don't need more. capability and aesthetic character they'll build a buff place on fillmore - audience thank you sir, your time is up >> thank you. any further any public comment? if so, please come forward >> good afternoon, commissioners. my name is leah i'm here representing pets unlimited it was founded in 1947 we provide

life saving care to our animals. we've been operating on foiling more for 40 years we're one of the largest and oldest institutions on fillmore street. we also will not partner with anyone we pick our neighbors to make sure they climate our community we believe that the rag on fits that. this will bring more businesses to our community. the relationship with rag on bone is much more involved they want to sell something produced locally this keeps our bond alive. rag on bone is a small company that the people i met with when
12:52 pm
we talked about this collaboration. those people are the whops i can call. this is real accountability and this is evidence of the fact they're not like the larger businesses. they're small enough to be flexible and their in fact, one of the fewer retailer that have approached us with the partnerships. for those reasons i ask you to please support rag on bone today >> if i k would ask the people lined up in front of the the doors to move over here. >> good afternoon. i'm rachel i'm here to represent my business on fillmore. i've worked on fillmore street

francisco. our businesses are both closer to having tens of locations not hundreds. as such we both appreciate the relationships we have and the positive impacts on each other. we're aware that rag on bone is interested in pursuing other relationships on fillmore street. we hope this leads to other relationships amongst the various businesses on fillmore street and encourage that. again, we ask you support rag on bone and allow them to move onto the fillmore street. thank you >> thank you. next speaker, please. >> i'm for rag on bone coming to fillmore. i live on the cornea for 5 years. i usually avoid a coffee place
12:55 pm
and none of their 4r5u7bd vendor machines work. i'm certain that rag on bone will be a great asset. i look at rag on street and look at the fashioned. i think we have a quarter of people walking by me is wearing rag on bone already. we need a competent company that has the describe to stick around. it's known for being consistent in quality and craftsmanship. and i also think it's plenty affordable for people living in the neighborhood.
12:56 pm
in my experience several of both technologies on fillmore street are out of touch. i think there will be also people that resistant to change and threatened by a businesslike rag on. thank you >> thank you. >> how i'm heather. i'm in support of rag on bone i'll keep to short and sweet. i live a block from the proposed store location and would love to see rag on bone and walk in there and shop. i shop at a lot of the stores in the neighborhood and it's an added venue i know i want to go
12:57 pm
there and my neighbors. from the community i listens to the folks i know this would like to enrich the community it makes me like the brand even more. but to the side the work they do speaks to this business. thank you >> thank you. >> good afternoon, commissioners my name is ellen i work for ed match as part of the san francisco education fund. the san francisco education if you happened is excited to work with rag on bone. specifically through their grant to the dr. cob elementary school. we want to make sure that the fund are directed to the school and with the education fund to

make sure the work is in line with the san francisco school priority. they're setting up a model that we hope will be replicate by other businesses throughout our city. we looking forward to a company like this. i'm in support of rag on bone getting that space. thank you >> thank you. >> good afternoon, commissioners i'm going to follow up on what ellen said. i'm the founder of evil less than match. and i've role founded ed match because there were businesses out there like rag on bone who create true partnerships with businesses and local schools. i was contracted about three or

four months ago from rag on bone saying they were interested in giving a grant to the school. they want to go and meet with the principal at cob and talk about the needs at the school and we did we sat and the elementary school school has an interesting history it's 92 percent fillmore residents and it serves vastly the acknowledging and child community as part of the city that's challenged through the years but this school has remained consistent. like ellen said it's at the amazing model for other businesses to look at it and say they want to support the public schools and be part of the community. i'm the parents of three

children. and my kids all attend locally arrest affordable housing rod is one of the better schools in san francisco and one of the things we have an incredibly strong relationship with the corridor on 23rd street and it allows us to provide enriching schools and rag on bone should be modeled by as many businesses has possible. i think rag on bone i'm in support of it coming to the fillmore coming to the city and hope many businesses will follow their lead. thank you >> thank you. >> hello, i'm
