11:00 pm
cut down on the time for people to be a stuart and really the streamlining for the permitting of those spaces we're hoping is going to support activation >> i have robin who will be on this project. >> i love it i think this is awesome and a lot of other cities new york has taken time square and done this and in the bourths and other cities its about time i'll really pleased you're doing this it's awesome. >> thank you. >> any other commission questions or comments. thank you very much we're happy to take any public comment on this any public comment on the dwp presentation. seeing none, we'll move on thank
11:01 pm
you very much for that presentation. item 67 on the agenda i don't have it - is that permits >> yeah. that's permits this is the hearing for permits under the jurisdiction of the entertainment commission how is that. >> great. >> it is matthew henry doing business as the watch they're requesting a permit his business is a t-shirt merchandising but they need to have retail it's slow so they added pinball machines and it got a lot of transaction and officer wu you
11:02 pm
visited them and the owner didn't know he had to have a mechanic and i adrenalins permit so in the report officer wu thinks this is a good business and there's dozens of e-mails and letters thinking that the watch is a great addition to the community. >> here's a lot of signatures and stuff. >> wait there's more. >> hi, i'm matthew henry i operate free gold watch it's a screen printing shop we print t-shirts overall the state and any bands or restaurants or anybody that needs t-shirts.
11:03 pm
we're on 67 waller street we're zoned for retail on that block. we have 25 hundred square feet of retail space that was difficult to fill so we tried jeans and outerwear and couldn't get people to come into our space so we are you think the only retail store on the street. i think there's a yoga place there to people weren't coming off our street so we added a few pinball machines only for me and my employees to play then a few more people and a few more
11:04 pm
people came by and i met someone who had a few more machines who want to do put them in. we have a pinball league that looets meets every other wednesday 72 active members we had to close off the registration and deny people it's fun clean entertainment and a lot of kids that come by and moms and dads bring their kids by and they ask what is this and the kids stand on a stool and their fingers start flipping it's really, really rewarding to watch its not an an ipad i'm seeing that children gets addicted to device.
11:05 pm
it's great to see it become a part of children's lives those machines are older than their parent. we love pinball and want to keep it there >> how many machines. >> currently 29 machines. >> commissioner joseph. >> anything great any spectacular pinball machines arrest how about your farther. >> captain fantastic and if you've seen the movie the pinball wisconsin's arrested machine and elton john has his own pinball machine there's another pinball machine attack
11:06 pm
from mars and the medieval madness that features tina ray before she was famous. something for me, i love about pinball is the artwork because the play fields is all screen printed so i get to admire but i anything else in printing those playing fields it's a work of art do you have the one that says you have failed >> (laughter). >> i think you might be referring to black knight referral it says no way when you miss it's very not encouraging. >> (laughter). >> he's against you throughout the game. >> commissioners any other questions or comments.
11:07 pm
thank you very much you can have a seat. any any public comment? in support or about this? come on up >> hello commissioners, thank you very much for the opportunity. >> state your name. >> i'm erick i'm the selfishness director at the patent university a small college in the east bay. i want to see a few words on behalf of petitioner. i help to run the pinball tournaments although i'm not alleviated with the business in the bay area there's only one other place that has morphin ball machines in alameda so to
11:08 pm
have some in san francisco is fantastic for us. it's allowed us to have a number of events and tournament twice a month as matt mentioned. we've been attracting a diversity even if people from all walks of life teenagers coming in to retired folks and it's great do so people from all types of professions and part of the country. recently, there was a big tournament near los angeles a lot of scandinavians came in and they came into to see the lounge it's acquit popular. i wanted to say this is very important it's an important place for the pinball community >> great, thank you.
11:09 pm
thank you. any other any public comment? all right. come on up anyone after this just go ahead state your name and what heifer what you want to say >> i'm andrea i'm a san francisco native and grew up in the same neighborhood as free gold watch i work in the neighborhood at ucsf. i've learned to play pinball and since then three years ago, i became the pinball challenge. i've been to a a lot of places around the world. i want to address there are very few places to play pinballs and down at the fisherman's wharf
11:10 pm
there are hard to keep them running and a maintained and you can't make a lot of money off them so few people want to invest it has a historic experience and an exciting experience and so one thing about free gold watch it has older games one other one was the wisconsin's arrested of these game it's got a full flat screen and it is from the movie wisconsin's arrested of these including a monkey that picks up the ball and heads to the castle. it's great the best players in the world has been there the
11:11 pm
other thing it's for casual people to be playing for fun and to learn about it pinball was not once as popular as it was. just having a place for people to play. i think it's good for the game and the city to have this special offering that was documented in the middle eastern magazine had cover stories about the gold watch and pinball stories there's a broad appeal for visitors. it's a positive place i think that matt as the owner and his wife make it welcoming and pinball people have been around for a long time. the attitude is really nice among pinball people.
11:12 pm
we're competitive or cache people playing for fun it's a low-cost fun and enjoyment and i love the game and the gold watch does is great game >> thank you very much. >> thank you. next speaker >> i'll try not to sound like a broken record. i'm sort of the opposite of andrea i moved to san francisco in the united states only 2 1/2 years ago. i want to say that coming to a new city a hard to find friends and the watch place is where i've off and on a community. it's taught me about a seethe of
11:13 pm
american history i come from denmark where we didn't have any pinball machines and didn't have a free gold watch to be able to be welcomed by the group of people it is totally amazing. i got addicted i feel like a little child when i go there. matt and andrea touched on it not only is this pinball place hard to find but it's hard to find welcoming where families can come and hang out in the afternoon the other options are in alameda but it's hard if you don't have a car or to go to
11:14 pm
bars if you have a family; right? so it's one of the placed you can go with your whole family there's also a family hanging out in the place with the kids >> next speaker. >> that's not something you see on every street corner are that's it thank you for your times. >> thank you. any other public comment? ? already seeing none, public comment is closed. >> i'd like to move i don't think i've smiled this hard over a permit in a really long time this is totally cool and i move to approve. >> all right. a second. >> i'll second. >> take to vote. >> okay. on the motion to
11:15 pm
approve commissioner hyde. >> i. . commissioner campagnoli and president tan >> all right. congratulations (clapping.) there's applause that's the first too. let's move open to item 6 b is the better and better room >> this is located on stockton street they're requesting a live performance permit and the commission has permitted a place of live entertainment but because of the new ownership that's a request for a new permit they want the live performance permit they want to have do yous and we got a permit from the police that says
11:16 pm
approves. i'm retro at that we're applying for a limited live performance permit. i don't know if many of you have been to our property but sometimes you can literally walk by it and not realize it was there and we've been there since 1906 that's when the building was there first >> it's a really great space. it has original penny tile on the second floor. you know, having the opportunity to have live band 5 nights a week is a unique experience. i think you mentioned earlier there's not many places that offer microscopic free and you can enjoy cocktails or diner.
11:17 pm
we work with sprouts which say they help teach kids about food and how to cook food. so we'll invite them into the restaurants on weekends and show them how to preparing and invite them the following weekend so they will cook food for their families and serve them on weekends so i have a letter too. >> you can pass that up to us. all right. any questions from commissions >> i'm familiar with your space i had diner there in december. >> okay. >> so when you go up the stairs. >> yeah. >> so you have dousing or troy's in the bar area. >> when you go through the better room there's a section
11:18 pm
this is literally in that section. >> uh-huh. >> commissioner lee. >> i was there only a few weeks ago actually. you know, since it's a hotel there's security it's kind of nice to have something there i only knew passing through that tunnel was the green door massage >> the green door uh-huh. >> yeah. i don't go there>> of course, not (laughter). >> but i went to a party under my friend ken through a party and i was surprised at the amount of people so i think it's great it's something only 10 o'clock; right? >> i don't see any more comments please have a seat and
11:19 pm
we'll invite the police to come up officer. >> steve ma empathy of the please station we're recommending approval they had a previous license and done some remodeling where the larger room in the back is now ail tables and chairs and stuff so it was nice the previous license was nice because it was a hotel first and foremost so they didn't want to make their guests angry as far as noise i can't think of a single complaint it is a great fit for the area and we wish them well. >> thank you. any any public comment on the barrooms
11:20 pm
application a seeing none, public comment is closed. commissioners anyone have a motion >> i motion to approve. >> i'll second. >> all right. let's take a vote. commissioner hyde. commissioner joseph. commissioner lee. commissioner campagnoli. president tan so moved. we'll move into our final permit this is the piano fight >> it's on taylor just to clarify this is not the fight club some people were confused it is as you know the old original jose that burnt down years ago and they plan to feature everything from the drama plays and stand up and the
11:21 pm
applicants met with the officers and they've recommended some conditions they're in your bind if you want to look at them and the applicants are fine fair undergoing more construction. >> good evening, everyone thanks for taking the time to let us speak. i'm rob and this is dan williams we're the owners and operators of piano fight we're a theatre that started here in the city in 2007. we started with just a 3 man team and since then about 50 company artists we have visual artists and dancers oiblg writers and a producers. we've done about 5 hundred different shows. we've been performing all over the city and a by the way, and
11:22 pm
up and down california we're building this into a multiple stage complex with a full bar and we have a 90 seat theater and with a cab are a stage. what else. the kind of performs you're likely to see it's a lot of comedy we do a lot of new work by locals. we're not going to do any shakespeare we do do exclusively work by locals it tends to be a lot of commodity and improve and stand up that kind of we have a music and film department we
11:23 pm
want to share infrastructure that's the hardest thing for the artists to build an infrastructure that works for them because it's competitive and time consuming and difficult so if we make that process easier that's our thing. we want to make it easier for the audience when you go out they want diner beforehand so you don't have to think about where you're going to go over the show that's the project we're here to talk about. we're excited to be in the neighborhood that block, of course, we've been in and around that area for a long time on
11:24 pm
mission street between 5 and 6th street running that for 4 years so we know the area it's difficult a few blocks up but we'll be there for a while in the tenderloin if you have any questions, i'll be happy to answer them >> one quick question before i pass it on i think telling from is is it a name. >> it's the master tenant at the space but you when we say piano fights it's the production company and will be the company that's responsible for all entertainment in the space. >> all right. commissioner joseph and commissioner hyde. >> i love that you have sound
11:25 pm
locks on the doors what kind of sounds like on the outside. >> double sheetrock. >> we have double sheetrock on the walls and ceiling and with installation with regular forearm. >> did you test it. >> we have not measured the tests but we've been out and did a little bit of testing. >> that's great your raefrl room is it for the performance. >> you're going to do theater and concerts. >> maybe that is right driven maybe a small acoustic set that
11:26 pm
i amplified music is not what we want. >> can you run all those rooms together at the same time. >> yes. >> without blending. >> we have double sheetrock installation as well too to help. >> besides the double sheet installation and the acoustic glue is there other awe civics. >> once we finish painting to help with the sound with the transition through the walls. >> could you tell me about the presentations and maybe who you talked to at the attained and stuff like this. >> we've talked to a few different groups in the we've
11:27 pm
done a lot of kind of business outreach. and kind of more residential outreach we're still working on but obviously there's the best hotel right above us we've been in touch with the management and across the street what's it called? the tenderloin headquarters and we know the management in the hotel. and let's see city impact purchased the property and there you go to, moving into the 4 story building and i don't believe any residents but as a tenant but, of course, they'll be our landlords also it will pay to be on good terms with
11:28 pm
them. we've taken part in the two take back a block that cesarean director i forget the organization but they're open turk and that's been really great in terms of reaching out. it's a challenge to enact with the residents on a basis and to know who's living there and not we do our best to keep the presence on the street and really looking forward to tearing down part of the waltz and we'll be running classes for students and younger kids and then supporting kids from the community to take part in that we want to be a part of the foundational system for the
11:29 pm
community so - >> that's great commissioner lee. >> can you explain on the audit community when this place becomes popular can you explain how you are handle people i see how you're handling the line but when the show is over do you let them on this their way. >> we designed the space at the 965 mitigation it has a lobby with no security guard at night we needed to get people into the space but they're waiting in a building lobby but we designed the space so the restaurants bar would be a more general hang out place. in between when you left the
11:30 pm
that is right and stepped outside. the idea there's a little cab are a stage not to have entertainment right there when you come out of a show you don't want to go into another show you may want to hang out and sit and chat about what you saw. hopefully, the space in front will provide that in addition to that we plan on staffing the security staff the whole time we're having the shows. we have 3 security cameras at each entrance and 15 feet around our facade and 5 feet around the building as well >> you
