to huge issue. our multi-lingual city, she's ensured that english is not a requirement for getting justice. she has spent significant time untangling commune indicationvs issues involving domestic violence and elder abuse ~ in communities where english is not a primary language. i can also say that she has great respect for the police department. she does. and she has a good working relationship with many of the officers. i've witnessed this. we have one of the best police departments in san francisco. it's not perfect, but the reason why it's because we have a strong police commission. it's important that the police commission have belts. there are only 7 members. this position is the people's position. and i know you have another position that the mayor can appoint, but this is the people's position. currently now you have three former prosecutors out of the seven. you have one former public defender and you have one youth

and community advocate, long-time advocate. and i believe that commissioner chan's exemplary record speaks for itself. and this is why a diverse group of over 40 public official and organizations from law enforcement to education to civil rights support her reappointment. thank you very much. >> thank you. >> hello, supervisors. thank you so much for taking me out of turn. i was visiting school today. i cut it short because this is such an important issue. not only for me as a san francisco an, but also for the 55,000 public school children that i represent. i am sandra lee fewer, many president of the san francisco board of education. i sent all of you a letter. i hope you had time to read it. but if you didn't, i'll explain a little bit about why i'm

supporting angela chan to the san francisco police commission. i have been a school board member six years now, but i am a first generation san francisco an chinese american. i was raised [speaker not understood], but more importantly, i am a san francisco police family. my husband work for the san francisco police department for 35 years. he just retired a couple of years ago. my two brother in laws are san francisco police officers. my uncle was the first chinese american police officer to serve on the san francisco police force. what i appreciate the most about angela, today you will hear from many people about her work with the youth, with immigrant populations, with mental health issues, but i'm here today specifically to talk about the deep respect that she has for the police department. it is not often that we see community members having great respect for the work that police do.
10:03 pm
i [speaker not understood] worked for eight year. the community buzz was not very happy about the police department. i was always happy about the work my husband did and had i colleague. i feel the work angela has done around mental health and the trauma they see every day on their jobs, it strengthens our police force to better serve the people of san francisco. and i want to say as a school board member, angela worked really hard on her m-o-u which we've had for year. this m-o-u as crafted has given us a working document on how we can work more efficiently and effectively with the police department and our school. we hope never to revisit the incident at authorize good marshal high school and this we hadn't had a memorandum of understanding for year. ~ angela made sure the open communication between the police commission and the
10:04 pm
people crafting the m-o-us always having discussions about it. this was an agreement, i think, that the san francisco unified school district appreciated and also so did the police department. and i just want to say also as a chinese american female, i am proud to have her representing us on the san francisco police commission. i think that she has been a great example of how we can forge communities, how we can bridge issues that maybe the chinese community has not been open to speak about, mental health issues, elder abuse, domestic violence and these are thing that happen in every community and every community needs help with them. angela has been a very, very hard working police commissioner. i am 57 year old and i have never seen a police commissioner that work this hard to bridge community and also takes her job as a commissioner so seriously to
10:05 pm
serve the community for san francisco. she represents a great balance between police and community and she does it with such grace and respect from also the police departments. i urge you for all san franciscans and for future san franciscans who will come here, especially our children in san francisco and their families to reappoint angela chan to san francisco police commission. thank you very much. >> thank you. (applause) >> there are a bunch of people outside and probably in the other room. so, the way i want to proceed is that i've got lots of cards. so, i'm going to give each speaker from the public one minute and i'm going to call -- i will call the names on the cards. and the way i'm hoping to do this is that i will call the names of people that are

so, we work with low and middle income, lebanonian gay bisexual transgender and queer survivors of violence, many of whom struggle with health issues are immigrants, mono lingual speaker who struggle with homelessness. there are [speaker not understood] in our participants. the work that angela chan that's done to make crisis intervention a priority, access priority, has been crucial to creating a sense of public safety that our members care about. i think that we've seen that angela chan has been an advocate for increased transparency and accountability. should the police, many of our member and participants experience violence from the police. good afternoon, supervisor kim, campos, yee, tang. sort of like the board of education days. i'm here to speak on behalf of angela chan who i strongly, strongly with recommendation recommend her. i want you to see something that is evident, i don't need to point it out. if you look at her support, broad base of support, she is supported by the young and the old all in this city. many wide variety of focuses. without angela chan the chinatown community, there would not have been a lot of these relationships established. an example would be for the past two years the police commission hearing have been held at my school where i'm the principal, gored an j.lau.
10:20 pm
to have the police commission have meetings at our school means she has the respect of the people in that community. >> thank you, denis. ~ gordon could you line up, jesus. leah price. kevin stall. go ahead and line up behind. i think i heard my name before but i was a little -- >> what's your name? laura pollstein. i'm from the central american resource center located in the mission district and we work on a variety of issues related to criminal justice and [speaker not understood]. we want to express our strongest support for angela china for her reappointment. she's done excellent work on the commission and we see no reason why she shouldn't be reappointed ~. i want to circle back to the comments supervisor mar made before he left. we really see no reason why it appears that there are two candidates and victor hwang seems to have his own qualifications and [speaker not

here to advocate for the reappointment of angela chan. so, as a community worker, [speaker not understood] on my own passion. i really see the benefit of having individuals that have been long-standing with their work. they become sustainable. when we have a new advocate and start building new relationships with people it becomes difficult. and all the work we've done prior is [speaker not understood]. there is a need to have consistency and angela chan has been a great person to be responsive with. the other seat i'd like to see the appointment of victor hwang. so, thank you. >> thank you. i'll call a few more names. come on up while i'm calling your name. i think it's joe osi. it looks like a j to me, but i'm not sure. what is this? [speaker not understood].

jeffery clay marcus. go ahead. hi, my name is gregory carey. [speaker not understood]. we are a civilian safety group that has worked in the castro since 2006. we worked closely with victor hwang through the past several years. his background in both public defender and district attorney bring a unique position. he he has proven to be very helpful in working with us in hate crime and other types of areas. one of the hopes that we have is in the shortage of the police officers that we have, to look at more creative solutions in the bridge period which includes working with groups such as ourselves and potrero special police to supplement the police department until the voice can be brought up to speed. we hope victor can bring some
10:25 pm
creative [speaker not understood] to the shortage we've experienced. >> thank you. i don't know if you called my name, francisco [speaker not understood]. >> no, i haven't. thank you. i did call audrey daniel just in case she didn't hear. she left? okay. good afternoon, commissioners. [speaker not understood] on behalf of [speaker not understood] doing work with 200 tran ition youth over 15 years and i really believe we strongly encourage the reappointment of angela chan. her work as a community builder and bridger, her integrity as an advocate on behalf of immigrant rights and immigrant language access services has been invaluable to our efforts. i really believe that her work with the cit group needs to be advanced and we do, as someone said earlier, we do need that perspective. we need the insight and the long-term view that she

[speaker not understood] evans. hello, my name is kevin stall and i am a resident of district 6 and i am here in support of victor hwang. from had i background it is like he is most deserving to be on the police commission, over 20 years of working for the da and the do, whatever, i'm sorry. but if he is appointed, he said he would help make the police commission a lot better. but i'm hoping that both him and angela chan are both on the commission because i'm sure they would both make the -- so, thank you. >> thank you.

10:29 pm
who is running for police commission. to me it's very important about safety in the community in the streets with the relationships with the police. now, my understanding is if i heard you right, david campos, somebody could get reelect and had there's another seat, right? so, i see a win/win situation. angela chan, hand down she does her thing, very respective of the community, but i'm here clearly to state that i'm here to support my man, mr. hwang. thank you. thank you, supervisors. excuse me. my name is ron stick l with sunset youth services also a violence prevention agency in san francisco ~. and i will say it is nice that support of a candidate is not disrespect to the other candidate. and that it is nice that there are multiple qualified candidates. maybe not nice for you guys
