building owners expansions so they could build even under construction we needed them yesterday now the need for office space is encroaching on pdr. and we have gone through many of us sitting in the eastern neighborhoods meeting for decades to terminate how to protect those pdr jobs like mentioned the pdr the jobs across the mid connecting section that don't require multiple degrees this is the job lost we're experiencing it again now. so what happens with this landmark it makes conversion to officer easier so i suggest that what is appropriate right now is praugz and asking the planning
6:31 am
department what is the need for pdr certainly there's a lot of pdr spates it's going to stay empty when our asking spaces for pdr they have to contract there's a loopholes now i ask you to stop did madness and ask the planning department to do their job. thank you >> thank you, sir. >> supervisors mike pecuniary trades council i've been a long supporter of pdr under an understanding it has two aspects one passenger door either produces something that produces the needs of the city or the other aspect is that it employes
6:32 am
a imply collar wells fargo like supervisor kim's. this building whatever it's supposed pdr function if house that function right now and it may support that or enhance f it in the city i think it's telling in the planning department's description of the building that it did service the function at the beginning of the last density but a preforklift type of building. i think then upper left with choosing between biz businesses that serves as one of the proponent testified high-end wealthy yours and businesses that are tech biz businesses that's not the kind of choice
6:33 am
the board of supervisors makes they defend the uses that serve the physical uses of the city but the other sort of decision is a decision that belongs to the marketplace >> thank you. next speaker. >> i'm the owner on one of the larger tenants of the design center i've walked through the doors 20 years ago. we have had very good future of being able to go through the recession with one flag year in 2010 we've seen a growth of our business since 1999 i feel a lot of that success we're really a lot of the of the technology our
6:34 am
landlord sought us out i have a little bit different take i'm a showroom owner and architect designer i'm the person that use those that building on a daily business i use interest on a daily basis to show inclines presentations, i use it for clients to show me what they like. if i put products up open interest or feedback the response that i get from local designers about this product is phenomenal i find printers to be smart decision for us to be able to use in that building. and i believe that's that. ; right? thank you >> thank you very much. next speaker.
6:35 am
. >> hi i'm a homeowner on katrero and a business owner in dog patch i'm invest in my immediate neighborhood i'm an architect and designer i have a working rich to kline's clients in the building i'm familiar with the interior and exterior i urge you to support the conversion to landmarkstasis status it's a landmark this i think we can't dispute the merits of what this building has for the neighborhood as well as been through our his. i think its important that we acknowledge and for me it's important to have a plan of evolution and it means to convert to a design savvy. i have a client in the building
6:36 am
because of this business i think it is the true merging of technology and design that's important to me as an architect and designer i'll be excited to see the low density building to a high density building living there it's quite dead over there the businesses are closed on the weekend i want to see the compression of space in the neighborhood thank you >> thank you very much. next speaker. >> thank you very much for giving me the opportunity i own a business in the showcase and have communicated with all of you. frankly, i didn't plan to take today but feel compelled to add
6:37 am
a little bit more after hearing the project sponsor. i want to mention that the building today is honoring only existing long term leases like other tenants that have spoken before me, you know, 5 or seven years in the future. they're not under immediate risk. so i think the plan is obviously to move everyone to a monthly lease so i have a thirty day risk it's hard to run a business this way. in fact, i have 4 positions i had available for hire i put up for lease because it's hard to find a good employee and just to let them know to move them somewhere else. increase no transition plan, in
6:38 am
fact, the last hearing i was invited to meet with mr. murphy and, of course, my concern that's apparent what was told relocating me as a business is less likely in the galleria and it will start in the fall. very quickly open the 2 hundred pdr border the other building in larry watson i've met with both landlords and larry watson wanted to center apprised tenants and when it comes to two hundred henry they mentioned that's 3 fold the market value and here you only have 20 thousand square feet >> thank you. next speaker.
6:39 am
>> hi i'm an interior designer i have the kind of office that can be moved but i've spoken to so many of the show rooms they're concerned because san francisco is really the premium showcase of fooufrnz and interior designs on the west coast and other design centers when they allows the critical placed they need to bring the market activity that they have they tend to continue to fail so i agree with many of the people that have show rooms that keep the people in business since 2008 and right when they're coming into their own they feel like the rug is being out out. it seems like a thriving building you don't think so i don't think so it's questionable
6:40 am
whether one building will be enough to create the critical mass and the platform it is developing so much business and leave the design area again, if you're making a historical building henry adams is a huge fan of the design industry that's at the trial important in san francisco and to reduce the design center is going in the wrong direction >> thank you very much. >> next speaker hi i'm crista i own a consulting company called cooper that works with the showroom i'm also an exterior designer and showroom person. one of the first mroofrmdz when
6:41 am
i work and engage in the exterior you designers it's on the first place to tell them about concept and expose them to products and that benchmarks into luxury sales and one of the hears or areas that's been flaund is the integration of technology into our city the technology companies have developed this await a lot of the feedback and where the partnership have engaged in the same buildings as entire designers can only help to raise the tide and help to revive. we can exchange information in terms of analytic that can help showroom guides to make better
6:42 am
decisions one good thing about penn contribution it really asks a middleman it's still ties into the show rooms and the interior designers to work with them >> thank you. next speaker. >> and a we feature homeland designers. i have leased the showroom at the san francisco science center for over 13 years and support of the renovation of henry adams i recently downsized my showroom down roughly about a thirty
6:43 am
percent reduction due to the changing nature of the design industry with the rice of the internet and the savvy websites by manufacturers i don't need as much square footage in my shadowing show room. i see other reductions of show rooms going o go on as well. i feel like-minded design tenants such as interest will create an ad active synergy with the san francisco design center i urge you to vote yes on the legislation >> thank you. next speaker. >> good afternoon sfifrz of supervisors i've been a tenant of the san francisco design center for about 15 years i too
6:44 am
support the redesignation of henry adams to landmark status my clients are doing business in the 21st century i've watched my business radical grow we've got a new business plan we conduct business by e-mail and telephone and interest is a viable part of our business. i like the association with penn contribution and the design industry because it's one and the same. i am downsizing from almost 9 thousand to 5 thousand square feet because my clients and are becoming for sufficient i love talking about the manufactures they have to see the merchandise
6:45 am
to feel it and smell it we go after them in a different way the san francisco design center is the heart of the design strict we're surrounded by like-minded people and people come to us for home furniture and furnishings especially with the demise of the retail furniture. i have 29 seconds outlook i support this and hope you will as well. thank you >> thank you very much before we get to the next speaker i think some have spoken but i'm going to read the next cards.
6:46 am
>> next speaker. >> good afternoon, supervisors my name is rich stevens a business owner and a tenants other than the messing necessary i've spent my entire career at the showcase we started in 197 with 3 people today 36 people i'm here in support of this project the reason there's change happening all around the area that hang has been happening since 1987. i like about this and the sheriff deputy andrew of the project by the owners the fact they've got a thirty year history from the design center with an industry that's sub burn to change but the owners and what's going on presents the best opportunity for change in the building i think it's good
6:47 am
for our employees i employ blue-collar works in san francisco and think it is good for our business and the other design centers change is not easy. >> thank you very much. >> next speaker >> good evening my name is john. i'm a tenant on the messing necessary level with the construction. i'm also a homeowner in district 10. i strongly recommend this project because it will create well over one hundred jobs for workers. i recommend an approval on the project i think it's important for people to look forward to
6:48 am
the future and with a plan of interest coming in what happiness over the next 5 to seven years it will create for construction jobs and also jobs in the technology industry quarter and also people that will live and work in district 10 myself being one of them >> thank you. thank you very much. next speaker. >> good evening. i'm you here and i wanted to say i support this project. i look forward to the new design technician jobs and the new industry i support this project because we want to see this building thrive and this is a great way to grow this san francisco >> thank you very much.
6:49 am
>> good evening supervisors. my name is rudy corpus i'm currently a resident in district 6 and also an operator of violation prevention program working with hundreds of kids. i'm here my interest is i'll confuse a history my family says in the south of market my mom moved here 55 years ago my family lived in this city. my interests is to support this program or interest and the reason why i've took an interest and supported our violence grassroots organization in our neighborhood. not too many people take the time to build the relationship they want to know about us and
6:50 am
we them. i'm here in support of them and thank you for the opportunity to learn about them and help us build as a grassroots organization >> thank you. next speaker. . >> i think we need to preserve those brick and timer buildings that's obese supportive i'm in support of interest moving into the neighborhoodful if there's an opportunity. there's observe benefits to the neighborhood in green e general and the community and frankly more vacancies in the neighborhood than i'd like to see a long term lease with tenant interests in the neighborhood has huge benefits.
6:51 am
thank you. >> next speaker >> good afternoon. i'm tim the cfo of the san francisco design center. bay of background my participate bill poland as well as marketing thomas have been involved 31 years and owned and managed the seattle design center and the laguna design center if southern california. essentially the ownership and operation of design centers has been the focus and core of my business criteria that's what we do. we've worked very hard over the last thirty years to make the san francisco design center the most prestige design center in the united states.
6:52 am
our main interest today is maintain that position or strengthen the design center. i don't need to point out the obvious in the last 10 years the 5 specifically and technology has affected us all. like it or not no one in the room didn't have a smart phone and people use technology to buy things online whether music, mefrs or making reservations for your next flight that's it dollars nothing different about our service the technology is effecting our business. backseat we must change and when i hear comments that the design center will never be the same my argument i agree it can't be the same if it doesn't evolve and adapt to the new environment we're going to have problems
6:53 am
we're not going to survive we don't want to fail. today, we sit here with a huge opportunity that we partner i'm sorry. i'm done >> can i say one last thing. >> finish your last sentence. >> we'll work and support folks who get moved from the galleria to find homes. >> is there any additional public comment on item 5 seeing none, public comment is closed colleagues the motivator is in the hands of the committee. supervisor cowen >> okay. thank you. interesting last words from the owner of the prompt. the matter is to grant a landmark discussion but there's
6:54 am
issues. one i agree that we live in the 21st century and technology is a part ever our lives and it is an interesting balance that we have to engage when when engaging with different technology firms. i think one of the things that made me uncomfortable it's a i the thought underline plan presented for the potential new tenants but i don't i don't see the current 0 thought and consideration for the new tenants it so you would a classic david and goliath set up this is a piece of protective i've struggled with allowing because la month i passed
6:55 am
legislation for the exempting commitment to pdr and the pdr spaces because we've seen a significant increase in demand you've heard testimony today and statistic data that size pdr in particular, the blue-collar work hires women and minority and people that don't have a college education than technology copies coming in. rudy said something about the nonprofits that has partnered with the company one of the things that's significant to move me, i'm laborer for a commitment to change the face of technology. there was a recent report about google having a large population of white males and insuring that
6:56 am
meaningful investments is happening with technology companies and with our education partners and within community of color and we've also seen that with the discussion there's still a large number of questions from tenants in the building and i'm convinced the project sponsor needs to address before moving forward. i'm not comfortable with this building is proposed being used for i'm uncomfortable with the conversation saying too larger to property owners if you want to get rid finding pdr space landmark our building i think that sends a wrong mess particularly what i say one of the better technology partners for this design center in san francisco there's businesses
6:57 am
that are already lighting this approach so this could xheevenly help san francisco we define technology. and instead of it being a big technology george up but maybe an opportunity so is how technology enhances and supports existing businesses but that said the biz businesses must be able to exist so i want to have a discussions to see what our thoughts maybe i've indicated that i think there's need to be more of a conversation between the current tenants and the project sponsor specifically as it relates to the landmark designation it changes the conversation the dynamic in the city. supervisor kim
6:58 am
>> so i think what i'm hearing a motion to continue i'll feel supporting to give a little bit more time for the project sponsor and many of the tenants we've heard from to maybe get a little bit further on the discussion. there's certainly a willingness on both sides for the discussion to occur i understand this is a two-part process and this is the first step i appreciate the landmark designation and interesting reading about the history of the building i wing the go historic preservation commission and planning department puts together with the history and the life of our buildings so if there's i also want to respect the district supervisor as well so if there's a motion to continue that's something i can support i'm not
6:59 am
how to get perimeter confidence this will currently come back at another point as well and let me say before we entertain a motion part of this i come to this committee a little bit frustrating around the tenants. you guys have been asleep at the reilly chili this conversation is frustrating i reached out to many of the tenants and no one excuse me. 2 people showed up so it's really hard to advocate and take our prospective into consideration when you've largely been absent so there's needs to be a voice around this has been a 15 moss e most project and i need assurance
7:00 am
from the folks and the tons and phone calls this those not something you're going to come in and make noise and walk away if that's the case there's nothing to negotiate. so i see heads needing in the committee room some in agreement and some not in agreement but i guess or just want to say how frustrating we need people who care of about the livelihood of their business and be at the table and the conversation didn't have to center in the city hall around the business hours we can move it to a closer place where you guys are working so we can accommodate this to the project sponsor i wanted to check i don't see - off thank you. i wte
