develop our public speaking skills and also to learn how to basically be a leader and yesterday we also had the student nutrition department where ms. vetting a racker provided how needless monday my possibly benefit the san francisco unified school district thank you. >> okay free muni for youth survey over the last couple of years we've retired a campaigning and as such the f ac promotes the opportunity for every student to provide their student voice and take a short 5 minute survey with the experience of muni so if you want your voice to be heard and

>> immigration commissioners and superintendent carranza my name is henry and this is my son john a ninth graderer at gateway and my other son i'm addressing you in sprongz support to have an admission preference for the gateway schools lottery our family choose this school because of the prep program and the difference learning needs as well as the community of death administrators and teachers my child has received and continues to receive excellent support from the speaker center and it's in everyone's interest to think at graduating we know that transition from middle school to high school is difficult i wanted my children to have an

easy transmission my son was lucky the transition from middle school to high school is less thanks to the staff and teachers at graduating u gateway middle school this helps him to focus on the curriculum and less so on the transition thank you for your time (clapping.) >> thank you. next speaker, please. >> good evening my name is brianna i'm a freshman at gateway holiday i was in the first class at gateway the contingent shapes my personality and support me and gave me a sense the pride and self-confidence they helped me

to learn with small class size and extra curriculum activities like pear and mentor classes and socially and emotional and starting out i felt apprehensive about meeting friends but gateway soon felt like a home because gateway middle it committed to preparing it states for college we studied to perform to the best of our ability we were prepared for the middle school school but during my eight grade year we were prepared early on in the game as much as balboa low choose me i was accepted into the lottery he

choose gateway i of time i had the best approach to school i was selected into the gateway lottery but many of my class was not so parents searched for some families it took months to get into a school this is particularly hard they felt disappointed by gateway so my experience i feel it is good for students if there's a system where students from gateway and middle can have an assurance to be expected this will be a less of a loss i've seen first hand how helpful it is when ninth grade students know what types expense i hope you'll support gateways proposed

changes to the lottery i know that gateway has helped me with the transition from high school i believe it will help many of the students too. >> (clapping). >> thank you. next speaker, please. >> good evening, commissioners and superintendent carranza this my is my daughter i have a son that attended gateway so i'm familiar with the school we're here speaking today to show our support of gateway schools proposal to give the eight graders a preference into the lottery we specific selected gateway for samantha because of the small class size and their photograph

that all ask the can learn at high levels and their understanding that all students have different learning needs samantha has made progress in her learning and personal growth in the last few years at gateway i believe strongly that it would be in our best interests if she could attend gateway high school for the next 4 years thank you for your time and consideration (clapping.) may i please have a report from the curriculum meeting thank you. >> thank you president fewer i wanted to remind everyone that we agreed to hold-off the the crime - curriculum report this

is at the curriculum meeting we first of all, a positive recommendation and it was really i think quiet a frustrate fill deep conversation about what this means for not only gateway students and we've heard from the gateway families but the important question that we had at the board of education. >>was how much room would you have more, more students not at the high school level what is the capacity and we were told that the in coming ninth grad closing class could handle 90 percent of the students not only

the gateway memorial day students that's what i think received well by the board to have that understanding and then gateway as requested that i president fewer in meetings did promise that when counseling middle school students on high school options they'll also vigorously talk about san francisco unified school district high schools so the students could make informed decisions about they're high school choice and the board appreciated that as well >> thank you, very much commissioner maufas commissioner norton. >> yes. i have a question first off about the free reduced price meal has that also been pardon of the gateway lottery preferences. >> that's new. >> so this is a new edition i don't know if i could do some

residents we have a new order of preference one siblings of current students that ready reside within the district and two students currently residing within the district and 3 students eligible for free and low priced meals reside within the district and next siblings of current students that reside outside of the district and children of employees outside of the district and students reside outside the district but enrolled here thank you. i appreciate that i think that's an important component to the discussion. >> thank you for reminding that my addendum on friday i forgot

provide an education to kids that need it and we felt it was consistent with the law and helped us sure our outreach it helped insure for families that wouldn't have as much access they'll have a preference does that makes sense. >> that's he helpful as you know this about say been a long conversation about the preference and areas of the disagreements last year and i want to commend you first for working with us about our concerns and as i interpret this new preference really addressing not just you know in work but real substance the mission that gateway is trying to address i

wanted to commend you personally for being simple a great partner with us and great thought partner with me and i well, i had some concerns about this you know in the early days of gateway middle school i'm going to report the material revision. >> thank you for the work i do dr. murase. >> i will be supporting this change, however, i do want to make sure that our colleagues said that this change privileges gateway and the tips we'll be discussing those families that have a little bit more predictability in the high school lottery i've visited both schools and observed them and it

makes sense to have this continuum from middle school to high school we had a town hall meeting and what the high school contributions looks like and i think over the coming months this board will be asked to evaluate whether chinese or vietnamness and tagalog as well as for a pathway into high school i want to flag that as an issue as we try to expand some predictability but we're aware for the privileging a couple of schools over other schools for the right reasons. >> commissioner haney. >> thank you. i have a couple of questions to clarify so and commissioner maufas

brought this up what exactly with the breakdown if every gateway eight grader were to go to ninth grade i know that's your hope but if they made the choose you how many spaces for non-gateway middle school students ways the percentage i know that commissioner maufas said 50 percent. >> absolutely so the we have one hundred students in our eight grade and one hundred and 70 if the ninth grade in pooling our families not all our eight graders will choose our high school and we really do help our students see lots of choices we encourage them to visit the high schools

we think that choosing should be about choice and they're lots of things that gateway didn't offer that the schools don't we think it will be closer to 70 or 80 percent students coming so that leaves a gap. >> you know i came into the curriculum committee meeting with a lot of questions and undecided i wanted to commend all the families and students it was really the stories that we've heard about how important this is to the families and to the students at gateway that was disi have for me, i think the way we're approaching that with the middle school feeder pattern there's a recognize of predictability and a cohort felt

opportunity to build relationships in the school over time and the value and not breaking that off when it's not a choice to do that when possible to i was convinced by that and just all of the people here and the enthusiasm for your school is incredibly impressive so hats off to you and i'll be supporting it, too. >> commissioner mendoza-mcdonnell. >> you guys call my hydra it's okay. i'm really glad all the changes in the language were made as well this is a positive thing to be able to do for our students in the middle school it was when we approved the middle school and really i think has done a great job in the middle school and the transition piece

was important as much as i want to make it predict for our yieths graders but to have opportunity to select the schools that mediated their needs and thank you. this is you're going into the middle school and now into our high school this is opening windows for them you continue to do for the kids that go through gateway so thank you for that and i'll be supporting this change. >> commissioner wynns. >> thank you i'm not going to support this i find it interesting you think that choice should be about choosing i believe that, too that's why we supported the high school admission based choice with the priorities for people however, so i and i even though

i didn't support the charter when it was granted the argument that were made by the colleagues they were interested in providing more choices for our families and so i find it ironic that now we're saying you know we want to people that are a little bit outside of our system we want to give them more opportunities so and i don't think this is what this was supposed to be about personally i'm not supportive of the charter system at all i think that consistency it is important the principle that some view the charter system as a choice for students if that's the reason it should be a choice for all students for that reason i'll not be supporting it and this is
