diploma they're just gone from our system and we don't have that. >> i would like to say in terms of retained in the fifth year we're working with the counseling office to develop a task force to look at the fifth year seniors and how to better serve them in our district as we well. >> any convicting from the colleagues okay. seeing none oh, commissioner maufas okay. i think that one thing it stands out when we look at the plan one and we look at on page 7 and we looked at it broken
1:31 pm
down by race i feel there's something i don't know what it is but i feel some of this is missing it would giving me a good at some point whether or not they are offering more or less opportunity through our graduation is the gpa or the grades i feel like we i've seen indicate i gave us that showed us a large number of students that passed with a d or better this is the achievement gap and tha that type of data is pretty interesting to find out where we're in the gap if we are doing all this to close the gap and give more opportunity for a there g will give important access but help us to close the gap to fully understand the gap if you're african-american
1:32 pm
students or latino or chinese students or weather white students if they all graduate with a majority of d that's not giving nor opportunity but closing the door to opportunity because why a there g you won't be able to be joining a larger university so because of the entrance requirements i'm trying to get out of the information is about are we have we narrowed the gap of opportunity for our students like is that racial gap closings and a way to look at it what the students are graduating with we know that organization through g but the graveside it; right? how said that be a greater opportunity to go to a four-year university this was
1:33 pm
the intention of joining a rigorous graduation requirement. >> thank you president fewer i absolutely agree i think that just for your own edition around the information we're going to also seek from you when you present to us urge you to also come it's a temperature check on how well, we're doing with the work and how well san francisco unified school district is doing with the graduates have opportunities and choices to go this is also a need for part of the presentation we're talking about the a g requirements we know that a d is passing but it didn't get you access to where i need to go we need to know that it helps us amongst ourselves as we're testing policy
1:34 pm
implementation and with the executive staff to be addressing the issues it's key so you know that i want to see that up front and could i eninquire i think i'm seeing a new cultural or racial category and not seeing specific asian pacific islander am i correct frail i was looking for pacific islander i don't see those numbers here there's important unless sailed in the mention of another racial background but that's important to keep track of that and am i looking at something new a new category. >> no, it's not a new category i think previously someone mentioned we didn't include the
1:35 pm
southeast asians i think the group is in the other category we can get that out further that information. >> and i think that president fewer has - >> yeah. so i have a question on page 8 thanks for numbering those also so i'm looking at this not english learn and the english learn the upsetting data it the 14 to 8 percent drop out of english learners so mr. koffman what is interesting is by race and and a half language and also maybe you have many here maybe i didn't see it mr. koffman is the amount of students the english learners that complete our course of study but don't pass
1:36 pm
the kc i think that that being the barrier to graduation that number would be really important also to find out and then, of course, i would we - getting back to the plans so i see that everyone has a different plan i'm wondering if you have a number of how many of our students are english learners and take advantage of the world language accomodation is that something their utilizing and has this helped with the graduation rates i thought that was a positive accomodation and i thought that would have great impact on the ervin learners it would guaranteeing free up 20 units of class they can take nor course work has it been efficient active and working and has it helped students to
1:37 pm
graduate are those students knowing about it again which language was the nature language they spoke thank you. >> commissioner haney thank you, thank you for your report it has a lot of important numbers i appreciate revisiting that it takes time to understand where the students are at there's a lot in here to be proud of and progress and a lot of hard work to insure that students who had further to go and had other options so thank you for your hard work in bringing that forward and i echo a lot of the questions and interests in young and old data if different ways to break down the picture our goal to get as many of our
1:38 pm
students from all our different neighborhoods and obviously u obviously from the community to be able to graduate a there g with a c or better we're striving for that so see how far that's helpful for us and with that, i think in the spirit of what commissioner maufas said nevertheless what the data that's helpful wherever you can breakdown this by race i appreciate the places out of done it on slide 6 as well as to some extent on slide 4 i believe but on slide 6 the breakdown of where we end each of those with the different categories it would be great if those were broke down the 50 that doesn't
1:39 pm
complete the graduation but what that picture looks like i know on the next page within each the city within the groups of students would be good to know and similarly when we're looking at the students that take advantage of the credit recovery interventions to have that picture kind of broejd as well as i think it would be helpful we know that ellis very well from doing that work we tend to have a high concentration of sub groups that make up a large proposition of those categories that are not meeting the graduation requirements and not being well served by the programs we have so, yeah those are the things i would say would be interested if there's another round of data i want to say
1:40 pm
thank you for your progress we made i know when we talked about this a number of months ago many times there was a lot of concern about huge numbers not meeting the a g and grating obviously the ones we are concerned and not to do better and understand their needs but to the extent you did a tremendous amount of work and kounlts and teachers and everyone else to make sure we made the progress i know it's new for everybody thank you. >> mr. superintendent i'm sorry. >> where you going to rely to mr. haneys comment and if i could draw your attention to the extent of learning and the annual and support annual report
1:41 pm
if you were looking page 4 i think some of that data exists for the demographics of the extended support of theatres and so this also might be able to clarify the data points and who took advantage and it's got some highlights of the works in terms of planning for success and the increased visibility and the accountability and the rigor and also a nice highlights on one of the sprout funds last year, it gives a snapshot of exactly what the micro funding for the school sites for identified students. >> commissioner maufas. >> thank you president fewer i got my questions together can
1:42 pm
i clarify the acronyms i may have heard the whole thing and not know cow pads. >> through the state of california as the kind of a database their collecting long data for students all throughout california and that's actually through the data that's how they are able to generate for your corporation rates. >> that's good to know and i want to appreciate the sprut funding process that you have created i think it is imperfect that everybody has an opportunity to apply for the funding and the process is clear and transparent i want to applaud that major step in the process i think it is good i'd like to hear a little bit about the professional development you're doing with the teacher could i
1:43 pm
do some investigating or just wishing their students that need intervention i want to make sure i said that right do i have that information or - and it's actually in development right now, we're just finishing up the design of the curriculum that is specific for intervention and those students we have been actively working with the math and science department to identify teachers interested if teaching summer school to take ownership when they go to teach it in the summertime rather the stock geotry and we know that a lot of times the students are different they need a little bit more sports and scaffolding in the summer school it's a longer period of time so it takes a
1:44 pm
different approach to provide them with the curriculum so right now, we're been meeting with the extended learning support tsas to offer that in the springtime for the summer school intervention curriculum. >> thank you maybe wherever you find it is fully developed bring it to the committee so they said it is ready to happen and the last question i have regarding the summer school i know your numbers jumps i jumbled from the previous years from the intervention online and summer school programming do you know now going forward that you will truly be serving our students with the highest needs for the graduation and
1:45 pm
priority have you be able to figure out that they need summer school intervention tongue the priority i need to graduate this class will help me graduate or those 3 classes will help me a through g completed do you have that ability and be able to use that that you're going to be using that going forward and that will be how you determine who dbes into those courses with the priority that's my concern you know i'd love to offer this to all students who desire more education but there's a reason you exist and based congratulation priority and how do the schedule that that's my
1:46 pm
question. >> thank you if you look at page 11 on the continuous cycle on the on track off track cycle it begins in august in terms of comically the d n f on and off track. >> mister koffman those numbers are tiny maybe you could send this power point presentation to us online and maybe it goes on line for the public to see as well it is really, really small i can look but tell me where in the cycle it is. >> it's actually a continuance cycle to the school sites in terms of lists and the on track
1:47 pm
off track counseling meetings we have in november with the caregivers of our students and so we actually send the list out to the schools and the counselors review it and based on that they accepted outliers for the on track and off track meetings with the parents in november and in december we'll present to and in january we'll rerun the data again and replicate the whole system again and we will post of the d n f on the bike list so this schools have access by counselor and the counselors will council those students and based on the data we've run on the school year in the d n f list we'll design the summer school programs based on the highest needs of the courses that are necessary for the
1:48 pm
students to graduated access one of the things we did have issues with was some of the classes were staffed with teachers so for example, we identified 4 good try classes we wanted to offer we might not have the goeometry marking restraining order approach may not be the best approach some of the schools need the access for their students to get into their receive the classes or the intervention they need just to add about summer school
1:49 pm
we have a senior simmer school for 12 graders that haven't completed their courses so we provide a lot of focus in grating our seniors. >> we appreciate that thank you. >> i'd like this to be actually included if a curriculum community meeting i'd like to hear about what our projection are for the graduating a let me ask you that, of 2015-2016 but are there other questions or comments from the commissioners. >> commissioner mendoza. >> i want on about what we should prepare to tap into our resources including what they have to offer. >> then mr. koffman we need to
1:50 pm
revisit our continuous skeletal and what's the projection for graduating and this will be 2014; right? so i want to see where we are and what kind of tracking our schools need and also i think it should on a curriculum meeting. >> if i may president fewer for your own understanding mr. koffman i think maybe november meeting regarding our county court schools abused as this is their 2014 graduation year before we have the budget meeting started because i don't know we're going to have a curriculum meeting may be one in december i don't know commissioner haney will let us
1:51 pm
know but if increased a meeting in december we want some of the information for the board members to work with because intention and meaningful allocation and the executive staff we need that as early as possible it's incredibly important and helpful so the information i think n i imagine imagine you're going to come before the end of the 2014 and i'm preying that on the community meeting to bring the information to the board of education don't that makes sense. >> at that point, we had a deep conversation burning around the congratulation i remember having conversations with the principles at the continuous schools i remember colleagues
1:52 pm
that that was encouraging that the principles said no. we're very close to graduating everyone so let's see where that's at if commissioner maufas said it's about our budget we should be talking about that i believe our generally council can clear cow pad it stands for i've pulled the website it's california longitudinal pupil assessment system and data systems. >> wow, that was great. >> we're now smarter in our acronym world. >> coy pads works better. >> the theory b behind cow pads
1:53 pm
this is the system that has a unique identifier number for each student that allows us to track all the students in the state that has a big again, on the mobility issue that a lot of big districts kids moving from here to oakland and students without stable homes that move around we don't know if there's a problem if the future by one of the issues with the federal government they presume that because it was usually if some small state it would be easy to have a system like this but it's difficult it's finally coming on line district are defining the data they've gotten from it is not completed in the future to provide a lot more kinds of day has been useful so it's a good
1:54 pm
thing we're happy about it. >> commissioner haney a quick clarifying question the total number on slide 5 and the total number on slide 6 seems like it different i he was the wondering. >> on slide 57 which is the reference to the on track graduation status we ran in the spring those are actually students so students sitting in the class at the springtime frame on slides of the 12 graders that have been in class since 2013 so starting in august there's slightly more bylaw by superintending some have transferred out graduated early. >> okay. thank you very much and i think this is just sort of
1:55 pm
the tip of the iceberg actually as far as questions we'll have much more when you get more data so thank you very much the presentation mr. koffman and the consent calendar resolution none and we'll vote it was we have a motion and a second. >> thank you, ms. son at that arrest mr. chin mr. haney ms. maufas ms. mendoza-mcdonnell. >> except on items 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 8 and 9 dr. murase. >> ms. norton ms. wynns and president fewer
1:56 pm
thank you. >> thank you very much item t consent calendar resolutions none superintendents proposals none together and board members proposals none and the board members report so may we hear from the school district ms. mendoza-mcdonnell and ms. wynns. >> yeah. quickly we had quill i actually multiple presentations on the various city services that are being providing support for a company of children that was a great report we expect to continue working with them and they'll be working with christen wong were p
1:57 pm
thank you very much ms. norton report from the commission. >> after conferring with complauf i'd like to postpone. >> that's absolutely great and dr. murase the report as a committee as a whole 2014 and one informational item update on the willie brown middle school and it's going to be a fantastic school we encourage our families to look at it as a option the information is available thank you very much commissioner improving is committee report. >> thank you president fewer as ms. norton said i will postpone my report until the next regular board meeting with

website so, please wwwsf e d u and i think you can put in the search s qi s and get the information if you're watching it at home. >> thank you very much any other board reports and commissioner wynns and i want to announce there's no rules committee meeting this month they're not really my referrals to the committee maybe it's because we're waiting for the legislation meeting to begin we don't have proposals to take it. >> thank you very much commissioner haney. >> i have a quick announcement we're going to have a meeting of the ad hoc committee open personnel and labor on monday october 27th for the chair and this is our first meeting of the year and one of the main topics we're
