you'll hear a lot of stories of great braver but a i'm thinking about what theme we are that going to use this evening i went back about a month and a half ago the chief of police put out a belittling we get two or three the title of the poetry to help people ladies and gentlemen, this is we they do everyday you'll see the extreme version tonight but everyday officers on the street and every inviting night and they help people i thought about what example what you use and again, this happened recently a couple of days ago a hispanic female that had a language barrier on the fifth floor and needed someone to help her it was a domestic

violence you have to understand a domestic violence that unit is only 20 or thirty feet away from the chiefs office she went in there and there was an officer that could have sent her down others howl u hall the officer took the information she walked out and felt good about coming to the police department and getting help that was a i'm going to put you up front that was this officer (clapping) that so me as the epitomize of helping people you'll see that tonight without further ado i'm going to let you hear from our chief of police commissioner maufas. >> thank you. good evening, everyone on behalf of my

colleagues on the commission it's real an honor to stand here tonight and acknowledge the heros that walk among us in the police department now more than ever it feels like a good time to honor the best of the police department what we're here to honor is tall order braver above and beyond the call of duty a tough standard because the call of diet is high serving the people in the city we be honor the heros to do that to protect and serve but it seems and you'll hear shortly among this group as cheri's take care said uncommon valor was the common virtual we'll honor those who knowingly pursued armed suspects and were fired on over and over charges

with the weapon one officer that with an ran into 00 burning building and honor the officers that charged into an aircraft that could have easily imported into a ball of fire to rescue people each of you have made the city proud but the most extraordinarily see he thing about most of you, you doesn't do it for the that's correct the award or recognition you did it because you come to work everyday to help people and have serve the city and keep us safe without expectation of award or praise so for many tonight might be hard, hard to hear people talk about you and how braver and heroic uncomfortably with the praise and recognize i see some of i shuttling in our

(clapping) thank you commissioner maufas now from the chief greg suhr (clapping.) good evening this is our big night and it seems perfect it is situated over veterans day when we remember all those men and women in the armed services that did everything to preserve everything we get to do if this country two days before one of the most harrowing earning in the history of the san francisco police commission that took place on november 1819934 we lost a police with is where hundreds of rounds of ammunition

were traded and after that several officers received medal of valor when for not going away when we cough and the officer received a gold metal on the night of november 13, 1994, it was mentioned that this female officers she will not get a medal of valor that's her job (laughter) i don't see that to be funny but demonstrate some range at the world series pretty much every police and across town we droo took a lot of stuff oath conversation a lot of boltsz were thrown and officers stood their ground to make sure that citizens were not harmed and

property damaged and no one gets a metal it is not fun that's our job so far this year san francisco police officers have taken 9 hundred plus guns off the streets of san francisco obviously that's a dangerous time but we're probably at an all-time low for homicides in the city because there's 9 hundred less guns and those officers will get metals for that these officers way past all those things i described so if he could i'll read how they got here but to start with another round of applause (clapping) so how do you get a metal and how do you arrive here tonight to get a medal of valor in the

san francisco police commission you have to meet one of the thresholds i'll start with the browns medal of valor the departments third highest of award for the medal of valor the member of the awards committee shall evaluate the risk of danger and determine whether a silver or browns shall be grant if you do not meet the threshold of a silver there's a browns the silver medal of valor is the departments second highest metal only with the following mementos an officer modifies brafrz in the perform of his duties nicks that are not regard for a medal of valor and the knowledge of the danger involved or a reasonable person assumes hires

life is in danger where the officer accomplished the objective or was present by circumstances beyond his or her control silver melted is a big deal and browns is a big deal at gold is the biggest it is merited when the following elements exist outstanding braver above and beyond or failure to stack such action not justifying danger and when the officer has sufficient time to evaluate and went forward make sure it was to justify the risk and officer accomplished the objective or prevented only by occurring disabling injuries or death hard to get a gold metal so the way you get a metal is you have to you have to do something

that's a start and then somebody has to think it's outing outside of what your job is and eager to hear from some of the officers when we interviewed them the day of the metals many of them said they were just doing their job when you hear the stories it's morning that at this point the champion they take to seriously building they should make a recommendation of the medal of valor they write it up to an awards committee and the 3 captains for a period of 6 months decide which officers and they actually separated officers out and move officers forward and ask follow-up questions and sent to the full screening

committee in order to be in the room where those metals are actually considered and voted on only civic center captains of which are 31 or a member of the command staff sits in the room with the police commission that is non-voting and this commission skrertd commissioner monroe the number of years of experience steadies $1,000.02 or three times there's a lot of experience in the room and a lot of personalities and the men and women in that room to say it's a group is an understatement there are huge argument and people that haven't spoken together but it comes down to the voting we do it sounds like old but we're very traditional police department and second older in the country it's done with a
