to be part of the mid-market development and everything into the city we've been working on i tell people a we've had a great experience with the city of san francisco and the mayor's office all the way down to city staff we took a a project and redesigning to make that basketball and attractive for today. >> this is a 6 lateral project and a multiple project so like the union square and macy's is one department store on six or eight levels we have 6 levels with tenants on each level and we're comboiftd about the interest and everybody asked me we're talking about going to disclose the tenants nobody to signed but the interest is a regional and local and national tenants it be a speciality of

what the city has done we are we were talking about the election last week and how so many people supported the families and transportation and housing and minimum wage all the things we care about passersby parks and when we place the voters confidence in the 0 local government this is like a regard we get regard with more confidence everyday in the city this site right here in autopsying all of mid-market used reflected that as supervisor kim's belief very strongly with a good and great process south of market and the tenderloin i see members of both community here i want to congratulate planning, dbi, all the different agencies that have come together to help

with this site but also want to thank my office of the office of economic workforce development because they've been on the ground visiting every site and they've literally begun through the machination strategy where the second round to fresher us to get it going to make sure we're dealing with the challenges across the street but at the same time bringing the kinds of things that led to like the hall up the street we've celebrated that you should have seen that hall during the world series and recently, i even had lunch with jessie jackson he was looking at around and said this is not the mid-market i remember and all of that with creating great partnerships with the offices very, very willing to do 0 chris

you're not announcing the great tenants you have here that's many tenants we know that we're confidence in starting the process now is the right timing this is such an attraction for retail there will be a lot of jobs and we have a designer like the person that did the irreverent i'm excited to see this design and you can't ask for another great construction venue to keep the site safe but hundreds and hundreds of great jobs in the next year's i'm excited it is such an incredible compliment to the confidence that supervisor kim and i and supervisor david chiu began almost three years ago with two

blocks up and block by block and block get that kind of investor confidence this is what we're doing it's right and recently the controller's office come out with a report the kinds of policies we put together literally added even more than $7 million above what has begun on in the rest of the city right here along market street that's the kind of confidence we continue to have so chris congratulations for taking this on we're to be supportive and get on to building this plays and making sure we do it in a way that helps both sides of the street and continues the incredible revitalization at mid-market to help the tinder and south of market the story about mid-market well, i know for forever in our hi supervisor

many of us have been behind that i see randy shaw and it only feels like it's been 18 years and finally coming out of the adolescence and it's actually geology to grow and before it opens its doors but this site has been something that our neighborhoods the tenderloin and mid-market neighborhood have bun talking about for years and years the tenderloin looking forward to the markets coming to this side of the neighborhood to bring you jobs and also a place where people can shop because we have retail in the tenderloin neighborhood and i know the many years the negotiations and many of you were involved in that and finally being able to get the

time and have the project come to fruition but i came into the office in 2011 and the mayor remarked market street had a 50 percent vacancy rate it's amazing what has within accomplished over the last years and is a press with the marketplace all you way to van ness where we have many of our tech companies at 1465 and government offices as well it's excited to see was you do with the neighborhood we want to make sure it's good for everybody we want to make sure we're hiring in the neighborhood and we're making sure it's a place it's comfortable and safe for folks of all incomes and background we can do that as a community together thank you and congratulations (clapping.)

rolph stared into the crowds of those who have gathered. a moment in history. the birth of a publicly own transit system. san francisco municipal railway. muni as it would become to be known. happy birthday, muni, here is to the next 100 years. the birth of muni had been a long-time coming. over the years the city was disjointed privately owned companies. horses and steam and electric-powered vehicles. creating a hodgepodge of transit options. none of them particularly satisfying to city residents. the city transit system like the

city itself would have changes during the san francisco earthquake. the transition that will pursue from this aftermath would change san francisco's transportation system once again. facilitated by city boss, abe ruth, ushering in the electric city car. the writing was on the wall. the clammer had begun for the experiment including public transit people. owned by the people and for the people. the idea of a consolidated city-owned transit system had begun traction. and in 1909, voters went to the polls and created a bond measure to create the people's railway.

would become a reality three years later. on december 28, 1912, mayor sonny rolph introduced the new geary electric streetcar line and the new san francisco railway. that he said would be the nucleus that would host the city. and san francisco gave further incentive to expand the city's network. a project by way of tunnel leading into chinatown by way of north beach. in december the first streetcar was driven into the tunnel. just two years after its berth, muni had added two lines.

and k, l and m lines that span out from westportal. in 1928, the j line opened heading west to the beach. in 1944 san francisco voters finally approved muni take-over of the market street railway. by then motor bus and trolley bus improvement had given them the ability to conquer san francisco's hills. after the war most of the street-car lines would be replaced with motor or trolley bus service. in 1947, the mayor recommended replacing two lines with motor coaches. and it appeared that san francisco's iconic cable cars had seen their final days. entered mrs. cluskin, the leader to save the cable cars.

arguing that the cable cars were a symbol of the city, and she entered a charter placed on the november ballot. it passed overwhelmly. the california street cable railway was purchased by the city in 1952. there were cut backs on the cable car system and in 1957 only three lines would remain. the three lines that exist today. in 1964 the cable car's future as part of california's transit system was sealed when it was proclaimed a national historic landmark. in february, 1980, muni metro

were officially inaugurated. in that same year, muni received its first fleet of buses equipped with wheelchair lifts. in 1982 when the cable car had a shut-down, they added an alternative attraction to the cars. the festival was a huge hit and would continue for the next four summers in a permanent f-line that would extend all the way to fisherman's wharf, by 2000 the f-line was in place. and in 2007 muni extended the third line to the southeast corner and returning to third street. for the first time in 60 years.
