to my colleagues i can't thank you enough. we have, over the years that i have been on this board of supervisors we have had awed differences, but what i appreciate most is each and every one of you is passionate about what you believe in you're passionate about our city. we may have a different way of which we go about doing business, but ultimately i appreciate your support, appreciate our working relationship and i look forward to working together on this board with each and every one of us to serve this amazing city and county of san francisco and i'm humbled like i said. i'm excited, i'm proud and i'm truly looking forward to honor. i definitely will be making some additional comments later, but today is the day that i want to
1:05 pm
recognize the people who have just, within the last year running for office. running for office, people who are reelected, congratulations, and i'm so glad that you're back here in city hall so that we can continue the work that many of you started before your campaign. to supervisor christensen, i'm totally looking forward to working with you. i'm very excited about the work you've done in your community, and the work you will do for your community here on the board of supervisors. so with that i want to begin the process of introducing each member of the board of supervisors so that they have an opportunity to make remarks to have an opportunity to introduce their family and friend who are here to support them today.
1:06 pm

support. i also want to give a moment and recognize my fiance, warn pully. [applause] it has been an incredible four years and i appreciate my friend and my families for being with me as i walk along this journey to continue my calling in life, which is to serve san francisco. i also want to recognize one of my political mentors, fiona mah. she's been incredible helped me along the way and has been instrumental since day one. thank you very much for being here. [applause] earlier in the remarks you heard by way of introduction the distinguished department heads that have all left now, as you
1:09 pm
can see. monique moyer is still here back from the port. but without the help and the support of their staff, as well as their expertise would make being a member of the board extremely difficult and i want to take a moment to recognize staff persons that i have grown to admire and respect. there are department heads i work overtime with and i want to acknowledge director of dpw and this is the man that can clean up anything. if you don't know him you must know him. he is just incredible. i don't say that to leave the rest of you behind but when you need your garbage picked up what can i say. i want to recognize the close relationship i have in working with mta as we continue to grow on the southeastern sector of
1:10 pm
san francisco. transportation is absolutely critical. i also need to give thanks to the men and women in labor. you heard a few of the voices from police and fire but we also need to uplift the teachers. i'm a product of public schools and if it were not for the teachers we would have a truly lost generation. with that said i want to recognize the newly elected members to the school district. congratulations to those members, it's good to see you all here today. i want to give a moment to respect, not only the teachers, but the building and construction and trades, as well as the labor councils and alliance for jobs for their leaderships and dedication to
1:11 pm
men and women in labor. and the countless people who stand with you when you're running for office. these are resident who is come from every corner of district ten. they rolled up their sleeves knocked on doors and i can't begin to name all of them here today, but i want to take a moment to uplift a few. pete and philly strain, fran martin dewayne jones and i have a fantastic support in dog patch. i also need to recognize patrero hill. we have an interesting relationship over the last four years and i can imagine it will continue to be interesting, but there is a group of leaders that are phenomenal and i want to recognize kepa and patricia allen who has been so gracious and then the beloved bay view

community. that's not where the list end, because there's also the faith community. the faith community that stand with me in community and prayer. i want to recognize reverend brown. and pastor walker is not able to join us here today but that faith community is incredible. it's important to recognize that it's more than just the christian faith, but the interfaith. particularly when we pay attention to the things happening around this world we as a faith community must continue to band together. you would be nowhere without campaign staff. i want to recognize my campaign manager jessica love joy. thank you very much jessica, i know you're here. thank you for your work. these are two very special people they sung frozen theme
1:13 pm
song with my 5-year-old niece so many times, they played beauty shop in the campaign office and knocked on doors and turned out voters. to my colleagues supervisors breed, wiener, tang farrell former supervisor chiu, mar and yee as well as mayor lee, thank you for your unwavering support. i am touched by your friendship and kindness and leadership. and it's been an honor to work with all the aforementioned folks. though we don't always agree, we can agree to disagree in a very civil manner and understand that it is this disagreement that good legislation continues to be produced from this body. and i'm looking forward to working and building bridges with folks that are here on this body. i want to take a moment to
1:14 pm
reflect on the many difficulties we are facing here in our city and what we face as a community. my thoughts begin to turn to those who have preceded myself and what -- and acknowledging what they have accomplished. i'd like to recognize former supervisor willy b kennedy as many of you know has passed away a few years ago. she stood in this chamber and it's on her shoulders that supervisor breeds and i stand on. also want to recognize my immediate predecessor sophie maxwell who has been an incredible woman silent strong and encouraging every step of the way. also want to recognize supervisor doris ward who has been a matriarch and impeccable when it comes to providing leadership and guidance and a steady motherly hand to help me as i begin to navigate my career. you know, during the campaign
1:15 pm
you have the opportunity to really begin to reflect on many things and the best part about running for reelection is you get to revisit all 52 precincts that make up district ten and i have had the wonderful to reconnect with a lot of con stitch constituents that i have don't always get to hear from. . it's very humbling to look in the eyes of folks in need and i want to recognize my friend in the office now from hunters view who worked with me tirelyilessly to make sure phase one was and with that said we are going to rebuild all of public housing in the city and county of san francisco all of it. [applause] and in order to do this moving
1:16 pm
forward it's going to take efforts not just of one person or one supervisor but we are required the efforts of everyone working together for a common goal. so as i embark on my second term as supervisor i have a great deal of optimism on what we can achieve. i mean we just elected an african american woman as president of the board of supervisors. that is phenomenal. [applause] and when people think they're down and out i think there's always a beacon of hope. i think it was harvey milk that said you got to give them hope and i believe that and take that spirit with me every day when i come to these chambers and when i'm in the streets of district ten. many people think of the district and images -- negative images come to mind, high crime rate, underperforming schools, a
1:17 pm
part of san francisco where no one should go but everyone in district ten knows that's not all that there is to the neighborhood. and i represent a vibrant, live community with dedicated committed talented people and it's resilient, one of the most resilient neighborhoods inside san francisco and we are at the beginning of this revitalization and i want to thank those folks on ocii who are revitalizing our 12i. it is exciting to see the southeast side of the city catching fire and moving forward in a positive way and a way that's not leaving people behind and that's really important. you can move forward and you cannot leave people behind. yes, we have our challenges but that does not mean we are defined by our challenges.
1:18 pm
we have begun to rebuild housing and removed over 600 guns off the street and i want to thank the police department for doing that. we will continue to do that and chip away and make sure our safety net is safe and fair for everyone in this city. i want to in closing give a few remarks about some of the work i'm going to be doing in the next four years. i'll be working to ensure that affordable units being built here in our city become available to everyone equally and making sure they're accessible and there's quality advertisement and make sure that long time residents can remain residents if their homes so seniors can continue to grow in place. i want to make sure that everyone's that's not in this
1:19 pm
chamber can hear my voice and understand that this moment is not about me, it is about our collective interests as we as a city begin to creatively figure out some of these challenges. the last four years have been about building partnerships and and now it's about pushing to the next level. i'm here to humbly present myself as a bold servant for the city and county of san francisco. thank you very much my name is malia cohen. [applause] >>thank you supervisor, cohen. i'd now like to acknowledge supervisor mark farrell. [applause] >>thank you president breed and thank you colleagues. you'll have to forgive my voice here today i'm recovering from a cold. first of all i want to say congratulations to supervisor breed. you are going to do an amazing
1:20 pm
job as president of our board for the next two years and i couldn't be more proud to support you. congratulations. and supervisor christensen welcome on board and congratulations to you. look forward to working with you for years to come and congratulations on your appointment. i think district three is going to be incredibly well served so congratulations. you know, i remember standing here four years ago to the day i think over on that seat where supervisor tang is sitting right now, and remembering, not having been in office before and just being so awe struck with these chambers with city hall. what an amazing building. but also not at all appreciate the magnitude, the importance and the impact of this job and this position. i stand here four years later absolutely humbled to be
1:21 pm
reelected and so looking forward to what the next four years are going to bring. we have had an amazing last four years here in san francisco. our economy is now kicking on all cylinders we have record low unemployment, we have hosted some amazing events from two world series i think since we were last elected to the america's cup. we're going to have the super bowl next year. our neighborhood vitality has never been stronger. we have our challenges as well from the affordability crisis that we all know about and feel and work so on hear inside of city all. inside of district two we have cpmc being rebuilt, we have presidio parkway opening up laurel heights campus is going
1:22 pm
to be completely rebuilt. there are major things happening within the district that i think we should all be very proud of but as a city because we are elected to represent our cities from my perspective mayor lee touched upon that earlier. we went from -- when we got into the office a year before the budget deficit was over $5 million. we go into budget season this year in low double digits, that's amazing. we are the only city in the united states who have passed it's not about us but about the next generation, it's about our kids. parks and open space we have dedicated more funding. my colleagues all know that one of the things i'm most proud of is the san francisco reservoir
1:23 pm
and converting in trm terms of homelessness we have a renewed focus on that here in city hall. this is just the beginning. this is an issue that affects all of us as san francisco citizens. these are human beings sleeping on our streets at night and we need to make that a priority. public safety is something that affects all of us in our neighborhood. we've created down payment programs for all first responders to live inside of our neighborhoods something we can all be super proud of and continue to priority here at city and something else that's important is focusing on families again. that has to change and it's slowly changing, but we need to focus on this matter whether it's opening of schoolyards
1:24 pm
again where i played with my dad when i was growing up or doing other things creating events in our neighborhoods. this has to be a priority for all of us. what i wanted to do today is really to say thank you. i told supervisor kim i would try not to crack up today, but i don't know if i'm going to be able to do it. you know, to me being in this chair, standing amongst my colleagues, we are all here because of other people and the great work and the great generosity and support of other people around us and i just want to take a moment to recognize those. first of all, to my family that are here my amazing wife liz who most of you know right now, being married with three kids is tough. it's tough in san francisco and it's certainly tough being on the board of supervisors doing it and i wouldn't be able to do it without the best partner in
1:25 pm
the world and liz, you've been amazing. i thank you for your years of support in this job and it's been amazing. we have been married over ten years have three beautiful children and it's an amazing life and i thank you for you support and life. to my children madison and jack, four years ago you guys were over there, i don't think you remember it. but among other things i am blessed with the best children in the world. our little 2-year-old cane had to go home for his nap. he would have been a terror during this whole process, but we love him just the same. and madison, jack you're our whole world we love you so much. dadsly loves you a ton. thanks for skipping school today
1:26 pm
to be here and share this moment but mommy and daddy love you so much and you're amazing. we are so so proud of you. to my parents my mom and dad who are here again four years later supervisor cohen is one of five. i'm an only child so i grew up and continue to be so lucky to be so close to my parents. i have the most amazing parents in the world and they are such close friend, such amazing grandparents to our children and that is ultimately what matters most in life and i love you to do. i am so proud of both of you. thank you for everything you've given me and all the support you give us as a family. four years ago i think the reason i won the election is because my dad sat in front of the marina safeway and wouldn't let anyone shop for groceries
1:27 pm
unless they committed to vote for his son. i had people coming up to me a few weeks ago telling those stories. it's the type of people my family are unconditional love and support and i'm so blessed. my inlaw who are here thank you for everything, for our family that you provide, for your friendship for me. you know the last few weeks have been rough for a lot of reasons for us but we're all here together and i'm so thankful for that so thank you for coming and being here today. to my brothers-in-law and sisters-in-laws my wife is one of four girlses. they are all amazing sister-in-laws. thank you guys for all your support and love it's -- life wouldn't be possible without it and i love you guys so much.
1:28 pm
and to all my other friend in particular who called me this year you know when you grow up as an only kid you form stronger friendships with other folks. someone who was my brother growing up tommy moved back to san francisco. thank you for being here for everything you do. i want to thank residents of district two you are the friend i grew up with friends i went to school with parents i'm now sending our kids to school with. on the political side the neighborhood, merchant leadsers and every other person outside of district school thank you for your support thank you for your support in the election in november. you know, it's an amazing place to represent, especially as someone who grew up inside of district two and i value all of those friendships and it is so fun to represent the neighborhoods i grew up in. you go on the campaign trail you
1:29 pm
do house parties. you go around and do the precinct walks and everything we do in our neighborhoods and i think supervisor cohen yee -- i'm trying to think now, supervisor tang, supervisor breed, ones that are born and raised here as well we're lucky enough to represent the neighborhoods we grew up in. we have memories in these neighborhoods and it's an amazing privilege to do what we do to represent these neighborhoods now inside of city hall. i want to thank my staff. i know i'm biassed but i think i have the best three aids in the city. and margo, we've been together since the beginning of our first campaign for years. and it's such an amazing part of our family, really. to katherine who does such an amazing job an amazing working mother has two small children of her own; and to jess who's been such an amazing part of our team over the past two years and
1:30 pm
kicked us all into gear thank you guys for your support. i wouldn't be interested in in doing this without you guys so thank you. to the campaign team as well, to maggy and moe tyler david thank you for all your support during the process. this campaign was different than the last one around but i thank you nonetheless and we still put in the work we needed to do and i want to thank everyone to the left to all our city family. i could probably spend time counting them out right now but this job is not possible without the strong relationships without our department heads so everybody inside of city hall that we work together with, thank you for your friendship and working relationships. it means the world.
