the slide now you have a breakdown of who's in the building in terms of staff. so you have 8 classroom teachers two engineering teachers, one stem coordinator then the lab teachers are the additional support staff. gym, foreign language, all those teachers would be assigned a portion of the student population to mentor and to advise across their college prep period throughout the year. >> i'm sorry, with the recruiting, how is the recruiting happening and do you have to take within the district first, just certain teachers get seniority, how does that work for a new school? >> currently if you look at our recruitment hiring process, every person in the district, every teacher certified and credentialled can apply at willie brown middle school. clearly we want the best candidates so we are designing an interview process that is already in line with hr hr has its initial process, once
3:31 pm
county supplies through that portal then we screen the applicants and prepare for an interview. they post a job description then a virtual tour of the school, we do a rubric screen, there is an interview with our colleagues at stanford then we perform a phone interview, we bring in our teachers for a model lesson, an in-person interview and finally we do a reference check. we know who will be good to be in line with our children to service our vision of our school. so we skipped a little bit forward in the presentation. what i would like to do, i don't know where we are on time, but i would like to go back to the health care center and talk about that a little bit. . >> (inaudible) is a key pillar
3:32 pm
for this school. we are extremely excited to rethink what our wellness support looks like at the middle school level. we're committed to make sure our willie brown students are safe healthy and ready to learn. we are building students who are health literate and strong consumers of health. this isn't just a stand-alone health center, this is going to be embedded within the curriculum as well, thinking about stem careers, biotechnology and the health field, it's something the students have access to before they need to visit. this is a breakdown of what we're staffing as a school district it's our traditional support system of a social worker, school nurse and our community health outreach coordinator and the department of public health is supporting our physical, oral and behavioral health practitioners at the site. this shows the model of our proposed model of what this would look like. at the bottom in gray, these are the supports
3:33 pm
that all students are going to have access to. in the middle there are additional supports for a smaller subset then up at the top there is even more intense interventions and supports for students that want to access them on site. this is a space for not just students but also families. it's a learning center for parents and families as well about health, good nutrition, ways we can be preventative in our health care for all of our children and this is really exciting opportunity for us to really welcome the community into our school. . >> this is just a quick rundown of what we've done so far. here we've participated in 20 school site presentations, 9 levels of enrollment and census for our families to engage with us. we have held 7 city-wide enrollment events, mostly at thurgood marshal high school and they have been phenomenal
3:34 pm
giving us space. social media, facebook and twitter, one community outreach blast and we are committed to over the summer, once we know who our students are, visiting each home so that the transition between home and school is a solid connection. our commissioners from the board of education entered the world of willie brown and stomped the grounds, i call them dkt, door knock team. we walked through the community and so here you have special thanks to commissioner fewer commissioner hayen, commissioner mendoza-mcdonnell, commissioner wynns who knocked on doors in the community and walked through the community and encouraged families to consider willie brown middle school. there is a quick enrollment update. we have 218 students as of today who have applied to willie brown middle
3:35 pm
school. 135 of those students chose willie brown first place. and that is informal data. we are still processing applications. here you can clearly see from the communities where -- sorry, yes. >> i'm sorry, commissioner mendoza-mcdonnell. >> do we know what the ethnic breakdown is of those who have applied? >> yes. quickly, these are the current schools with the highest percentage of students who have applied to willie brown middle school. these are the zip codes that most of our students have applied from. back to commissioner fewer's concern, i any the next largest one would be 94112, i believe
3:36 pm
that's the excelsior community. gender was a concern of families as i engaged them, a lot of mothers thought their daughters wouldn't want to attend willie brown because it was a stem school and here we have almost a 1 to 1 ratio of male to female students. african americans are 29 percent of the student population with this current application process data. spanish, at least spanish surnames are at 29 percent. chinese are at 12 percent and other white are at 11 percent. so that's the student breakdown of our school ethnic make-up. we covered a little bit of the staffing. i know that the president wanted to move forward. so again the hiring process, these are some interview day activities. we can go into detail on that if
3:37 pm
you have questions. ultimately we need your help in getting the word out. on february 9th we are hosting a hiring recruitment event at the office of the board of education, 555 franklin, so in the board's room. that event will begin at 5.30 -- 5:00. and teachers, networks have received this flyer. at the bottom they can click the url and fill out an rsvp to come join us at willie brown middle school. >> thank you, mr. hobson. we have two members on the roster, commissioner fewer and then commissioner wynns. >> i want to commend staff because these numbers look fabulous. i think this is really hard work and for the commissioners, and for the supervisors who don't know how hard this was, i just want to explain that most parents, they look at middle schools and the school they choose by test
3:38 pm
scores. so they are looking at test scores, they are looking at how well has the school done. this is a brand new school so there are no test scores to go by. we had a couple incentives that helped us. one was if your child goes to willie brown, 6th, 7th and 8th grade, in 9th grade they get their choice of any high school. we are giving them a preference for any school they choose. we knew we had to do this for parents to take a leap of faith that willie brown, they had nothing to judge the academic performance of this so we knew we had to do it. i think it's 94124 is 42.2 percent and we are still counting i understand, that we have enrolled this number. it was our goal to build this school to serve the children in this area since they have been out of a middle school for many
3:39 pm
years so i think this is fabulous and the diversity, but we have said that if children who go in this area went to their school in this neighborhood that we would have diverse schools and we see here that we do. so i don't think it was mentioned that we have a cap of 200 students, is that correct? so this first class of willie brown will be the founding class. i think what excited a lot of students to enroll to put willie brown as their first choice is that these students will be the first students to choose their school colors. they would be the students to choose their mascot, they would be the first student body officers for this school and also they will be always the oldest students in the school, right? so i think that attracted them to this new school. i also wanted to emphasize that the way this school has
3:40 pm
been designed really complements what we're doing with the curriculum too. and as we build out a larger enrollment we will be offering more things. we looked for an orchestra, we're looking for much more elective choices and as we grow this middle school to its maximum capacity of 600 students that we will be able to offer more things. but this for a first class is fabulous and i just want to say especially that it captures so many children that actually live in this neighborhood. thanks. really great job. >> thank you, commissioner. commissioner wynns. >> i have a couple questions. the first one is where it says enrollment update --. >> you had me print out
3:41 pm
(inaudible). >> can you speak into the mic? >> i'm sorry, i'm not understanding what you are saying. >> the way the graph, if you look at the slide now on the screen. >> yeah. >> then you should see data there where you see series 1 and series 2. that's just the way the printer printed it out. >> i'm sorry, i don't know what you mean by that. i see that there are two bars. what are they, what is series 1 and what is series 2? i'm not saying i can't see it, i'm not saying i don't have the data, there's no explanation as to what it is. >> one represents the actual raw number and one represents the percentage. >> represents what? >> the percentage next to it. it's not the best way to format it. >> okay, we can talk about that later. i was wondering if we were -- but it didn't make sense when i saw it. what it looked like it meant was kids who applied by last friday and ones who applied since then but that doesn't make any sense.
3:42 pm
the next chart -- so i would like to know eventually what that means. prrp next chart has the current enrollment current elementary and the bars are not next to the school names. so can you just give us an updated version that actually tells us where the kids are coming from? i appreciate the largest ones on the side, we're glad to see they are, the schools we're targeting but this doesn't make sense. this graph is not, doesn't tell us --. >> it's not aligned. absolutely. we can provide the spreadsheet that has all the data to make sure it is aligned with the actual school. >> okay, that would be great. i appreciate that. so i'm going to wait because i'm going to want to ask some questions about the hiring so i don't want to -- first i want to hear what you have to say about that. thank you. >> actually i think i -- we
3:43 pm
moved that up to when i asked the question about the hiring so i think this is the appropriate time to ask about the hiring. >> what i want to know is if you can keep us apprised as to the, who's in the pool. i don't mean the names of the people in the pool, i understand the privacy rights, i don't want to know that, but i want to know who is applying, who is getting -- i understand it may be a little technical but somebody else is going to have to decide what kind of information is germane, really, but basically teachers are applying just to work in sfusd they are the ones who get screened by hr so while i would like to know, have some data about who is -- everybody in the pool, gender, ethnicity, where they are coming from and particularly since the transfer process is a little separate as we heard here i really want to
3:44 pm
know i think we all really want to know who from the school district is interested in moving to willie brown. that would be important to know. but then i'd like to know some of those characteristics for the ones who are screened by hr and sent to you for interviews. so of the big group, who are we -- who is somebody deciding might be a good match for willie brown? then eventually as we go along we'll see who we actually hire and if they take the jobs and what kind of a group we think we get so that we can have a sense of there are more than one group of people funneling, you know, making getting a smaller and smaller group of people and then i'd like along the way for us to have a sense of whether we think that's working and we are getting the right teachers, the ones that we would want
3:45 pm
that have the experiences we want, et cetera. so i'd like to be kept apprised. >> we can definitely follow-up with the details. i just want to make it clear that while hr is helping us through the large pool, we actually have a specific posting just for willie brown as well so people can go on and apply just to teach at willie brown. >> okay, so it would be great to know how many of those there are and what their profile is. >> exactly. >> and how many of them also --. >> applied to the larger pool. absolutely we can follow-up. >> thank you. >> thank you. so i don't see any other comments or questions so at this time we are going to open up for public comment on this item. is there any public comment on this item? seeing none, public comment is closed. so in terms of helping with further outreach, i assume it's for the second deadline of enrollment for the second round of enrollment, is that what we're doing with the school
3:46 pm
district is recruiting for currently? >> we were asking for support to tap into your professional networks and market our school to staff, teachers, potential employees. >> i see. okay. you are looking for teachers and is there a second deadline for enrollment for school? >> there is a second deadline, however at this point given the fact that the data is not entered yet and we have already surpassed our goal we are probably going to fill all our seats in the first round. >> i assume you have to wait for the students to accept as well, but you feel there's a sufficient wait list that that's not going to be an issue? well, we're happy to do outreach to individuals that would be interested in teaching. i do want to thank you all for the time in presenting to this committee which has been following the development of the school for quite a while now and it was really exciting last year to get a real full and robust
3:47 pm
presentation on the actual construction of the school and what the physical elements of the school would look like to create a different learning environment around math and science and it was really really cool to see because we certainly don't have a school like that currently. we're going to continue this topic throughout the year. last year in the fall we did have a discussion on the growing population here in san francisco and what that means for the school district in terms of potentially opening new schools and new classrooms which is a really nice and positive conversation to have because i know many of us were involved back in the early 2000's and closing schools whether we were on the school board or not, had attended many meetings. so it's exciting to talk about hitting capacity at the kindergarten and grade school level but we look forward to continuing that item. as well, i know our office and also members of this board have
3:48 pm
been really interested in the construction of a next school, mission bay is one we've talked about as well as a school of the arts. so i think we want to continue having those discussions here at the city select committee. and finally this is just really exciting to kind of envision what a new school looks like in the bayview and i really hope that a lot of our families are excited about it and hopefully we can create a continuum with mission bay as well at the elementary level and i look forward to a discussion of where our students are going to go at the high school level, too, so that would be a continued discussion. supervisor avalos. >> i just want to say thank you for the presentation and clearly there's been a lot of work that's been put into creating the new school and it's very very exciting to see the work, the experience you have coming, mr. hobson, bringing the school together
3:49 pm
from scratch. i know you have a lot of support from the school district and the school board and wish you luck and if i can help with whatever networks i connect with to help with your recruitment process. >> commissioner mendoza-mcdonnell. >> thank you. i just want to thank you all both so much for your support on this. this has been a lot of work from the heart. i did want to note that we brought on staff a year before we are even opening the school, which i think makes a huge difference, and both of you have been out in the community in many places doing many things. so we're really excited to see what will happen in the fall which i think will be really positive. also i just wanted to ask with regards to what you just asked of the supervisors, which is, you know, to tap into your network for teachers, are we going to be doing, it sounds like we're going to be doing recruitment from within sfusd
3:50 pm
from our own pool, but are we doing national search as well? is this posted all over the country for people to come, a way for people to come to san francisco? that's question no. 1. secondly besides teachers what are some of the other positions that you are considering? >> yes, we are sending out the post to national platforms like career builder, indeed, ed join is another one. my linked in profile and you can post it through your linked in profile as well, it's posted on the sfusd hr portal and i believe hr has that general protocol of making positions open through all those other portals nationwide. so we do have some interest from the midwest, the east coast and the south. so here is a list of positions, to
3:51 pm
answer your second question. you have 8 classroom teachers and then the assistant principal we are hiring office staff we also need a special education teacher, the health care center we have to staff out, there's also security, custodians and paraprofessionals. >> excellent. thank you. and then i know one of the other things we are wants to do is to get more engagement with public private partnerships, especially as an art and tech school and really bringing in some of the industry. and so what are some of your thoughts around that as we walk away from there so that when we're out and about we're thinking about who would be most appropriate to invest in the schools, support the school, be champions. >> currently for the social emotional support and learning,
3:52 pm
especially around the peer practices, we've partnered with peer practices. we have the partnership with stanford. in fact we will attend a thinking training in february for the design thinking training. the puc, public utilities commission, is another agency that has been supporting us and looking at the resources we need and what resources they can provide to support us and so has dcyf >> thank you. >> thank you. commissioner fewer. >> yes, i just wanted to mention that i am hoping that we have an emphasis on hiring from within first and within san francisco. i think that this school is in an area where the personnel that we're looking for has to be very culturally sensitive to what's happening in the area and also to the students that they are
3:53 pm
teaching. also we have started a lot of initiatives in san francisco that we've embraced whole-heartedly and restore tif practice is one of them and rti and also you know, our stat tee strategic plan is equity focused and we are rare in school districts about that and about a ratio in he can equity we're trying to balance out. hiring within, most people are aware of that, they know exactly what we're about and also in particular about these students who liver -- live in this area. i think a great partner for this area could be ai, we -- aim high. and would you please be reminded to send an invitation to every supervisor when we cut the blue ribbon or red ribbon or gold ribbon or
3:54 pm
whatever ribbon color it is on willie brown because any time we build a new school for the children of san francisco it is celebration regardless of whatever district you live in. thank you. >> commissioner wynns. >> i just wanted to say that we still need to be doing outreach to students because we know that we don't -- i mean the fact we have so many first choices is fantastic. that is something that i'm going to guess no school in the southeast part of school can say forever since we've had these choices and that is testament to everybody's work, notably yours. but, you know, just like any college or anybody else, you -- i always hated this term, but there's a yield and you know, we're pretty close to the number, so we're going to need
3:55 pm
people. we're going to need people and be so happy to have people clamoring to get in but there are some kids who get in who are not going to come so we still have to do outreach and we particularly have to do it because one of our issues is that this is a neighborhood where there's a high percentage of people who don't participate in the first round. so we still need to do outreach for them and i'm volunteering. i will help. thank you. >> well, seeing no other -- commissioner mendoza -- seeing no other comments or questions, congratulations, we look forward to working with you in preparation of the new school year in august and please lean on us for support because we really do want this to be a successful venture for the school district. so seeing no other items, can we take a motion to file this item so we will take that motion and we will do that without opposition. madam clerk, are there any other
3:56 pm
announcements? >> there are none other, madam chair, today. that's it. >> thank you, madam clerk. commissioner mendoza-mcdonnell. >> i'm sorry, i just wanted to thank supervisor avalos and supervisor farrell for your support on the committee. these are always really good conversations for us to share and to have so i just wanted to thank you from the school board for your -- for showing up and participating and really sharing some of your ideas over the course of these last few months, so thank you. >> agreed. and they will continue to be involved in the dialogue around schools and families regardless of whether they sit on this committee. i know supervisor avalos is super instrumental in the children's fund and public enrichment conversation and that will continue to happen and we look forward to hearing on the shared schoolyards project that supervisor farrell continues to lead on the city end. so without further ado, our
3:57 pm
next meeting item will likely be on the pre-k hearing that our office called in the fall and we look forward to that conversation, particularly in light with the reauthorized childrens fund and public enrichment fund and that will likely be in february. commissioner wynns. >> we still had not had the hearing on the expansion of afterschool programs so if we can do that one time. >> we are happy to do that. >> i'm not going to say when we should have it, we should ask associate superintendent truett when they think would be best. >> we do have that item on afterschool for all and we will work with the school district to calendar that. thank you, meeting adjourned. (meeting adjourned). .
3:58 pm
3:59 pm
fund, we are celebrating a renewal and an awakening of this park. we have it safer, happier more joyous. >> 3, 2, 1 [laughter] =--[applause] >> it is a great resource for families, to have fun in the city, recreation. >> this is an amazing park. we have not revitalized it without public and private investment. the critical piece of the process of this renovation was that it was all about the community. we reached out to everyone in this community. we love this park dearly and they all had thoughts and ideas and they wanted to bring their own creativity and their
4:00 pm
personality to bear on the design. what you see is what the community wanted. these ideas all came from the residents of this community. as a result, there is a sense of ownership, pride and responsibility that goes along with what is going to be an exciting park. . >> i'd like to call the meeting to order please join me in the pledge
