around the presentation those tonight have highlight for all of us in a growing kind of tension we have between the time that we will have in the school and the resources we'll like to include and the instruction go forward to i'm asking that we since we're not going to resolve the issue tonight or this year i - while we have to work on that i'll also is the two things are a two proengd strategy to reverse and make it is important enough that it is more ubiquitous the instruction it something that all students are

aware of all the time so we need to find out what kind of professional developments for all the teachers and administrators said how important this see we recognize the reality there is only so much times in the day we're asking him to do more and more things luckily we have a hundred and 80 days in school that's a step in the right direction but i think rather than arguing what is this going to cost us how much time do we have we need a plan to tell us how to do a better job of integrating the information and instruction we want in multiple subject the subject we have the time for and are spending the time on and

work towards more health teachers and more health classes it's the same tension we have in many other areas we want everyone to have it and have this and that whatever more arts and music and i just think it's time to take this as a kind of wake up shocking lesson that rhetoric is not enough we need to know how we're going to do a better job with what we've got and how at the same time, we rededicated ourselves to getting more which is not only money but time and better management of time and resources so if i don't know, i'd ask the leadership of the board in the venue about the

health education. >> i have commissioner president loftus and commissioner vice president haney. >> thank you very much and thank you for your presentation i want to make a couple of statements and then make some suggestions so i think that sex overlook health information is important as a mother of three children i know that i was very appreciative of having any children have this information and real information for example what is connect way to put on a con sodium those conversations are sometimes uncomfortable with you don't this yours the correct information for a parent it's uncomfortable for many of us i'm outdated on some of the information out there i feel like giving angle example many

girls on the dating scene but for our students i've been married 33 years about but in particular hiv/aids prevention i think that sexual health education from a credential educator give us true information and also it provides teachers our students great pride in on the one hand their well-being and allows the students to make smallest decisions on health and truth on what we want and don't want to participate in i think that this also what i'm looking at those fingers is something like appalling since

we have a policy and there is a requirement and it's not being taught this is what the cycle is showing you we're to go to piece together grant money that is a dedicated stream of funding to address this issue of teacher professional development around health education and actually finding a way to teach this in a comprehensive way to lou also in a sensitive way to our students so i think we should probably have this from the chair of the curriculum committee and we seriously looking at the budget for health education in our district and i just wanted to address some of the speakers about the hands on cpr i'm working with our fac to look at

anchoring about implementing that district wide that is something that allows them to be a productive part of society helpfully e helping others and it's the vision of 2025 so i have to say that this rather sobering this presentation but it shows you how off track we are about it i have more specific questions about why are they not programmed into it is it that counseling or a time issue which students are being programmed and which are not are we doing and also are we sensitive to our new comers two are learning our language our english languages are our terms you know i'm a little bit confused about the terms quite

frankly so with the sensitivity around it it and also, we should also be emphasising and elementary sob the foundation a lot of middle school not only the physical changes happening with our students but face the fact that many of our students in middle school now could be sexually active or contemplating being sexually active so commissioner vice president haney i'm requesting formally on our curriculum committee so we can talk about the issues that wish causing this lack of health education in our schools thank you. >> i have commissioner vice president haney and student delegate and first of all, thank you, very much fewer presentation and all your work

to everyone that came to speak on the importance of this issue what was demonstrated how critical this is for students for the community for our educators and also how collaborative this effort and how many organizations it's incredible to see that the enthusiasm and to get this forward i want to thank you for your honest in the presentation that's actually an unusual approach we sometimes don't get pointing out the areas we can do better and work on and i think as reflected have a lot of concern but for us to put thank you out there it's shocking, of course, to see the numbers shift and see the policy that was passed by the board we feel we can move it long to make sure that the students are ref

education i want to thank you for you're honest and address the prior commissioners around the curriculum committee one is how critical this is at the middle school level this was brought up good afternoon, supervisors there are inches that are brought to our schools whether or not the safe and restoring the practices and the healthy relationship if we had a place for them to live it would be extraordinary to find a way through a stand alone class or explore other ways i heard the comments from commissioner wynns he might not have a space but what's the right way and what schools with meeting the challenges and barriers i was at

the dph m the students were there to discuss their concerns about sex all harassment they were eight graders is it something you discussed addressed in our health curriculum they said we have our health curriculum delivered at the end of the year it didn't make sense it should be done at the beginning of year there's all this stuff around the best way to do it i hope that can be part of condominium conversion conversation moving forward and beyond one thing i want to raise also and maybe a question for that can be answered that he curriculum committee how we staff health curriculum and health courses centerly i know i've had conversation with all

of you that do an amazing job some of you are funded by different grants and the lack of content area for the health curriculum that actually owns it and make sure it is being delivered and the support for all the health teachers and the teachers that are delivering the curriculum i know that is something to underscore and part of the puzzle you are doing an incredible amount of collecting pieces but how to make it solely operational for the students and teachers so we kim and i discussed next steps before this meeting around the probability of bringing forward a plan of how we might address some of the issues that were brought up in this presentation and bring back

to curriculum committee and having furl discussion about the next steps and budgeted all the ways to you make sure we address those issues that we discussed tonight to in terms of the commissioner fewer and commissioner wynns that's the next step that looks like a 3 year plan that maybe short timeframe by along with instructor truit image we were going to set a date in march for the curriculum committee so that's the next steps and we'll make sure that everyone is aware when this conversation happens and welcome you to come there and be a part of that we meet on the first monday of the month at 6:00 p.m. and hopefully begin to put forward to address the issues i want to thank you and i'm also in support of cpr thing

so important we've elevated student and health and cult how we hold ourselves accountable i appreciate the honest in the presentation you don't know your challenges null i've identified them i sure the board san francisco unified school district has been recognized as a leader in physical education we're not about to lose the mantel we'll come back with a aggressive plan i lost my father at a very very young age due to fax he suffered from diabetes in my community as a latino male

type 2 diabetes is important and knowing what we need to do as your preparing a healthy mind to prepare a healthy body that didn't happy over and over gastric it happenings hazard to happen as part of the organized educational program i'm very supportive or ramping up in terms of health that's a matter of social justice so the other things i'll say a few years ago i was serving as a principle of a high school it was rather a large high school $3,000 students as a principle with my walk i didn't talk i didn't when the fifth billion rank i got an emergency call they said student down i ran from the first up to

the third-story and outside one of the classrooms was one of our students strawberry field on the floor he suffered a massive heartache what i remembered was in the midst of the chaos there have 4 individuals performing cpr and he was transformed those are four students were high school students that were part of the swim team trained on cpr with not for them he wouldn't have made to the hospital we talk about life and death not one teacher was trained but four students the call for cpr is not unharder thank you for your

advocacy. >> commissioner walton. >> thank you for your presentation and your health education it is definitely important but made better decisions had we had more opportunities groping so a couple of questions as deemed in the presentation you talk about the lack of opportunity and our alternative to continuous schools so definitely don't look for an answer but how to make sure it happens at that level and the mid-markets middle schools in terms of the comprehensive health education is there anything about violence prevention or violence in the curriculum that is definitely a top topic.

health department on adverse child experience every one of the dpw is being trained ordering on trauma care and hopefully partner with dpw i was at a two day conference we should be doing more to address i have a concern about sex ed in elementary school i heard it happened as significant grade girls are experiencing menstruation in third grade as someone that is a chap room there's also one girl that starts on the camping trip and they freak out and, in fact, in my daughters class we got a note to cancel the health education class because we are out of time

that's not acceptable i hope we do this successful planning one thing we worked on in our council report that the city iowa's we looked at the challenges that lesbian girls face and while the state is enjoying a humane drop in teen pregnancy a spike in our lesbian girls which doesn't make sense but if you think about it they're so in the closet they feel they have to get pregnant to not be looked as lesbian i'm hoping we address those underserved community and i'm liking to disagree with commissioner wynns i think this demands money and demands a day

i've been on this cac crusade we're asking people to do more we need additional time in the day i think we've heard from an educator about the perils of having a teacher for skiefgsz to deliver high quality education so it's the recommendation of our replenish citizens advisory committee and i'd like to see a budget so i'd like to formally move this agenda to not only curriculum but to budget this is an opportune time what it is going to cost not the whole cadillac plan but do long term planning on priorities in year one of an overall plan any further comment seeing none thank you very much for your presentation tonight (clapping) oh, - deputy instructor.

the common core i want to quickly highlight 3 areas first we continue to serve high needs students with 82 percent with reduced lunch for the families and students of color both schools have been recognized for the achievement award for the achievement gap and in addition i'm proud to report we continue to work on student retention 94 percent to engage and kind of make sure our students are staying with us we've invested in social and emotional elapsing we have a head of school that is over serging the sediment e demonstrated and making sure our teachers and students in our

building have the tools to begin to transition and third as we r have transitioned to running e running special ed in house our improvements we attracted more families with students with special needs about 10 percent of our students another kip san francisco about 10 berries or percent of bay area academy and 16 percent are students with special needs we're proud of our counseled and psychiatrists are doing we're looking forward to more questions and looter look forward to our continual support in the bayview and the we were edition thanks so much.
