9:44 am
the bmgz and on four devoted to me it's nice so see how he placed things of importance obviously my dad is not here today but in spirit to thank you and tell you how proud but in his own words those are a few things he said my first few years of fundraising impressed me spurring their director chuck conley to invite me to join the board of directors in 1963 i was honored i've never forgot one meeting at the lunch of the board the director tould told rr78 which us the club had a
9:45 am
major deficit we don't have those anywhere i'll give a lot one guy said the next challenged said i'll give the same amount it went around the table they came to me wow, i couldn't give $0.05 i didn't have any money it wasn't until the gap went public many 1976 i got my hands on a substantial that i could contribute i felt embraced but before i could say anything one of the leenlz said let take care of talking to don at the end of the meeting i couldn't have been more appreciative how he took me off the hooky replaced the group
9:46 am
to see columbia park continue i stated on the board until today to do any part to maximize the influence in the beginning i could only add my thinking and energy to make things work better and 1ru67b8 as my resources grew i had more ways to contribute when rob came with bob emry and rocky to our family and said they wanted to name the club after our dad, i just can't tell you kind of what it meant to all of us this is something again my dad had been involved with since he was 35 years old it was in many respect the most important thing he was involved in and meant
9:47 am

9:50 am
right. i know that attorney general holder is not able to say this in public but he did i have to admit he said the visit in san francisco at the willie mayors clubhouse of boys and girls was the best of all his visits because it was in a true deems of what it means to build community trust and he was going around every portion of the country trying to find the answer answer he could bring back to the president and the answer bring back to scores of other cities around this country how do you build community trustee found if it in the willie maze center he put a basketball through 9 hoop what he saw was something our chief led and the
9:51 am
community leaders and kids a try relationship where cadets are leon how to be police officers are learning how to also create relationships with our youth at the very same time it isn't about being a police officer and then a good person in the community but both coming together to form of the character of the officer when the y0ug9 feel the character they in turn compliment the character building that was right here you know, i think he felt that he certainly expressed his feeling of that i know we now have a champion that's going to spread the word we do it right here in san francisco this is what the boys and girls club means to all of us that's just one clubhouse we have at least a dozen you have this
9:52 am
brand new one that is appropriately named with don's tricked i'll is you don't think in the chronicling of our dad and moms work one of the things i find the most enlightening is that you know those days i'm talking about philanthropy and trying to get those who have suddenly become overnight resources, if you will and trying to convince them to be you know understanding of people like who don and doris fisher are and the charles swabs of the world and the benny hoff's and sdooushgsz all those wonderful people that led the way and the thing i find the most
9:53 am
enlightening governor jerry brown is don was on the board of the boys and girls club 6 years before he and doris started the gap i think that's what you are saying was that you don't have to be corporately successful in order to show your commitment to people you care about and i think all of us can reach into our own lives and you know, i was an attorney before i became mayor i didn't have to become mayor to love people and create those relationships this is what the boys and girls club is drawing together because no matter where you come from in all you are walks of life our successful if you put people first and in this clubhouse the
9:54 am
newness of this place will ultimately be blended with the neighborhood very soon but what the youth that come through here with all the things that spencer is going to do and you'll the staff is going to do is that they're to create new relationships with you you're going to have new things to learn about users and about each other and then about our community and relationships this is what the boys and girls club stand for is building those relationships and you know rob i can't say that more than enough not only when we integrated when i think about the boys and girls club but those last most impressive seven years that the broouts has put together our volunteers and
9:55 am
fundraiser have done a tremendous jou job not only about the money but leading with the heart and the personal commitment that cases everything 80 everybody to truly say i want to give and be a part of that that is what the effective board do you get the chief on it he didn't go to a lot of boards 234i8s they're truly there he has to be on the ground doing good work i'll glad with we have allocate members the community i've encouraged them to be the members of the board of directors because it heeds leads not when you become successful but where your matter is first and when you lead like that your
9:56 am
successful this is my way of saying to doris and the kids of the family your gone good really good for the city we feel it and appreciate that the way we horn honor it is that kids when you and your friends gain friendships and the relationships we want to have with the willie maze in the mission area and all the other clubhouses that when you're ready we're going to do our job and create those jobs for you in the city you're going to have the best jobs you'll have the character building and you'll have the friends of mine and relationships then you're getting the skill stewart's sets one of the lovely things about this place. >> have to design thinking studio what is that going to do more for our kids to welcome them in and when you're ready
9:57 am
we're going to be ready we're going to welcome you going into the best jobs the world can have right here in san francisco that's my job to make sure that i get thousands of jobs for you that's the reward we get because london and i know that is better to be in here than in a car being a victim of something that happens you can't control that's why we've got to get the word out here is better than most places you'll feel the love of the city like don and doris and the entire family with that background and that commitment i want to present rob to you and to the board of directors on behalf of the city that this is an appropriate time to declare this to be don fisher clubhouse
9:58 am
