classmates cheered them on happy new year and those of you not familiar with the tradition this is the year of the sheep so happy new year to everyone we're in the month of february and at the last board meeting we learned about the history of san francisco unified school district and in particular the first african-american teacher ever hired in san francisco unified school district we also have another tradition taking place tomorrow the african-american honor roll from 6 to 8:00 p.m. at st. mary's cathedral an 11 lotta's fountain golf street a celebration this is sponsored by the alliance of black school a volunteer of san francisco unified school district educators this year mayor ed lee and san francisco board of supervisors president looerndz and supervisor cowen as well as

representatives from the gates will be in attention not to mention our commissioners as well and they will all be in attendance congratulating 2 hundred african-american students that are 3.80 or higher gpa part of the conversation around our focus on achieving african-american student weather obey very, very clear we are taking a hats basic approach to relocating recognize the students that need a little bit of extra help 12 hundred african-american or grade point afternoon 3.0 and behavior and district leaders will be there and congratulations to all students we're very proud of you and wanted to thank our staff

(calling names) tonight we're here to give you a brief update on what we've been up to it is appropriate if you can fix that thank you, thank you tonight you'll be receiving the first reading for the new wells policy i want to give you braukd background and frame what you'll be reading later a little bit background when the committee was originally formed through the board of education resolution in 2003 that asks for wells policy and commissioner wynns was destructible that led the work and it required the formation of a superintendant committee we have been meeting ever since and we have a presence on the sf website we are focused on supporting the district and the design

implement enforcement of wells policy our current work a really stayed focused on there are many reasons why i'll go into that on the next slide we do to the revive this policy we developed recommendations extensive work it was a lot of collaboration and a lot of research by city staff by district staff, community-based organizations and members of the public we developed the recommendation and submitted them to the district leadership team the superintendant and the sfusd leadership team and we also copied you all on those at the end of the december 2013 since that time we've been continuing to meet with the leadership team to review the recommendations

that it's been a interim process and wonderful partnership with the district we've reviewed the draft recommendations that the district staff has come forth to provide input that woefd held public meetings to engage more stakeholders the reason that we this is done there is a lot of changes in the federal and state guidelines with a hunger active program there are many changes he wanted to make sure the local district policy was taking into consideration all the changes as well as current best practices by the school district it's important to codify the practices we began with the wellness policy from previous years and built on it we tried to focus on centralizing the associate justices through food and physical education we i'd

like the framework of the districts strategy plan focusing on access and equality and 50k9d ability so symany recognized was collared in how it advanced each of those we clifford included the scientific literature on the physical education achievement and health and tried to end the best practices with other scapegoats we utilized district specific data an student health and the achievement gap and used this opportunity to really strengthen physical education and physical activity component of the wellness policy so our next steps with going to be to continue to provide input to the district wellness leadership team object the policy that is being trod we'll do that through the committees where this policy will be advanced and we'll also work with the

superintendent staff to support the prelims we wanted to call out we know the implementation of the policy will require the resources so for the first reading in the implementation section and the evaluates and monitoring we had really support this i wanted to with that is just acknowledge the current food and fitness sires members some are here and some not i wanted to acknowledge the incredible work of all those who have contributed to the current policy that is being introduced tonight and this is been a labor of love many involved in the partnership with the district over a decade and but we're really thrilled that our recommendations we are taken by

this incredibly dedicated team of sfusd staff team that led and includes the departments listed on top of the slide we look forward to seeing this policy adopted by the board in the weeks and months to come all right. thank you. >> thank you very much for that presentation i have one speaker card on the wellness issue josh david son. >> to minutes please. hi, i'm josh david son i cook for the students in the department i'm existed about the i got of this policy most people are not existed by wellness this

no offense to my colleges friends but if you're eating a meal and you're hearing those sound as you're getting ready to eat a burger or chirps you should give thought to we're careful about what we put-down many the packages for students i'm glad we're careful maybe the lesson of the package is not one and a we necessarily want to give to the kids beyond our doors what ends up is in the packages is very unhewitt so maybe in taken care of e teaching kids the company of a table with the dishes is not super practical but something we may be want to strive for it would be useful so, anyway thank

school district have awareness policy so in this case what is important about the first it is about the policy led to healthier informed and higher achievement all the things we know this is about so you know, i want to say thank you from all of us to all of you, we can't do this without community partnership and participation i want to thank everyone that served on the committee that had different needs when we start out from the beginning thank you. >> and commissioner fewer thank you for coming together with the nutritional guidelines i think the board should review this carefully and we could be in violation of many of the recommendations of the guidelines we need to actually look at ourselves as board

school food environment to the degree that staff has they're really leading all this work on the future dinging experience so again, this is really being led by the staff and to the degree it is in the wellness policy it will be that's an item to look for the support for that really prelims of the vision especially we know that it is really important to actually have kids have the environments they need to promote the eating habits it's about the lines and how things are presented i agree this is an opportunity to make sure is it so integrated. >> superintendent. >> you know that many of you have been doing this work for
