hodson has said the tell us on steam and the whole child we've talked about a whole approach the community in the heart of the bayview will be able to come to the site and have services the deep partnerships partnerships the department of public health and barbara garcia has pledged a full-time staff members and people out of the box before anyone saw the symmetric's are creating spaces and the nutrition will be second to none and we know that there are neighborhoods in san francisco children don't get fabulous they got out of the corner liquor store that will not be the case of the willie brown jr. middle school this is a school that loobltsd the whole

child we're excited for the sixth graders incidence 3 hundred and 65 requests for so many seats the majority of students that were offered a seat live in the bayview neighborhood they attend the schools in the neighborhood and nearly 70 percent are african-american students or latinos we're reclaiming an educational spot in the bayview so students don't are to go outside the bayview it will happen right here in our neighborhood (clapping) i alsoless want to enthuse one hundred percent of the money that built this building came from local gore bonds funded by the citizens of san francisco they believe in their public utilities this is the creation of the future another work i've

already mentioned our incredible partnership are the williams foundation i also want to recognize the public works has come forward as well as our first gate in the partnership world that is salesforce they've partnered with us and i'm not presented or authorized to talk about several other partnerships all i can say is get ready the community ask coming forward we'll be announcing a number of significant partnerships where the community is wrapping themselves around the willie brown jr. middle school there is still work to do one of the things i know to mention and staff may kill me awhile we're building this incredible, incredible health center in the part of the bayview as the the department of public health will staff it with a nurse

participation and dentist we'll be able to serve our community we need half million dollars so we are going to be unabashedly going out and saying if you believe we want you to come here willie brown has looked at through emphasis roller deck i want to say one more thing after the bus passes oh, its a cement truck i want to end my remarks when i saying when school opens in august of 2015 here in the willie brown jr. middle school what you'll notice the notice gifted students you'll see walking the halls of that middle school is what san francisco

looks like what america looks like and you'll see as a school that's completely designed to take us to our vision 2025 our students have global global skrilz skills to knot in a global economy you're going to see science and market and arts address cultural things and wrap around services and a staff that surely loves the kids they love the area but we've been strategy about people that are going to work here they're going to love our kids i'm existed about what you're seeing i'm going to turn it over to principle hobson thank you all for being here (clapping) >> next we'll have our families to share their reasons why

they're accepted and employed to and accepting their positions at the willie brown jr. middle school i have sophia silver and her mother mrs. silver (clapping). >> hi my name is scoffing i can't i'm in marshall school and came to this school it's a stem school i really like science and there's going to be a robotics class (clapping). >> hi, i'm senate file i can't see mother i'm existed as well for my daughter to attend this school yes, ma'am because of the introduction to the stem education it is especially because my daughter is a girl a female she'll get a head start

with career choices and other things thank you (clapping). >> thank you very much that is extremely important the work at willie brown jr. middle school our students know they're capable of doing the work they'll be presented to take the higher level math and science classes and enroll in college a lot of our students i talked to the families they're talking about the daughters attend the schools their concern because of boys are more the population we want to make sure they feel confident so next mr. nolan to come up and share with us her joy and passion for willie brown jr. middle school and introduce the mayor. >> thank you (clapping.) great morning everyone thank you

for being here there are many people that brought us here i want to acknowledge constituting thank you for your vision and leadership i want to recognize the school lineups or leaders that helped to develop the violation hydra and sandra and emily and others thank you very much. >> that's excitement because the future is right here in the library. >> the department heads that have been a part you've heard from determining trusts and others about the many city heads i want to acknowledge maria that has been heading up the department of b cf and the many people that work in labor many of who grew up in the neighborhood and still live here

this is truly a team project that is american people to on the last day of wir7b9 looking for spring tomorrow that's almost a poetic way to look at what's happening in the bayview and the seating part of san francisco we're coming out in the winter some consider a dictate neutrons i believe that one day this corridor is going to be the engine of san francisco where families with going to be able to stay in san francisco and businesses like high tech in the dog patch neighborhood that continue to grew and look for their future employees right here at this middle school so without further ado i'd like to bring a man that truly needs no introduction noted former mayor willie brown but mayor ed lee another mayor that needs to

abstraction bridging the gap between technology into the neighborhood so who is filling the nature of the community and making sure they're making systemic and institutional investment in our neighborhood ladies and gentlemen, mayor ed lee. important let me say this to those the school board and the superintendent and all the elected officials but patrolling to principle hobnobbing so that i'm existed at this time for our city to have to be able to have continued viewing confuses with virtually every area of success and education is at the center of everything to be a world-class city is such an inviting conversation that last night sitting around the table with 15 ceo's of companies and talk about what what we are doing with our school district is an incredible picture that we're painting for our senate file i can't see of the future because i look at her and i know she's going to be successful

whether my job or melissa's job or a ceo of a company it school will make a difference in fact our school system is making a difference this why i'm so combrifrd to have a relationship with statue of liberty we have the unique opportunity to talk about the future when i meet with the ceo's and companies as i do on a weekly basis we talk i talk about the mature investment the companies are looking for talent the school district is creating that talent for them this is the unique connection we have with our education system this is why the campus is important it is forward-looking and as principle hobnobbing so

that has said we're not only going to be a great learning center but establish the creators of the future when you have that as the goal for a middle school you're talking about the most critical thinking to have to happy with the youngest challenged age of our school district the middle grades that's why i met with mr. benny hoff a couch years ago and asked him to make the biggest education investment investment they could possibly do he's done with with our promises and teachers be principle hobnobbing so that you're in the line of middle school principles that embraces our schools i know you treasure and stanley have us visit every grades on a periodic basis to make sure our creatorors are creating the kinds of things this the future

that critical thinking is possible the stem thinking is future the 2025 is a future for our world-class city that's why the investment a happening and that's why we've gone beyond the benny hoff foundation and asked all the 2 thousand technology companies to circle our schools in doing so they said okay. if you invite us to p do that mayor ed lee what are you going to do well today's announcement is more than the opening of the school the anticipation this willie brown jr. middle school will be the 9th beacon center for the city and county of san francisco (clapping.) what did he mean i don't think we've opened the beacon center

what do you do what well 20 years ago then former mayor willie brown invited new york state and he saw schools this were embraced by the school with supportive after-school programs with entities that existed beyond the hours of the school that brought talent to the school site at all hours whether for health support or more creation those days you'll find cody's to help with the center that's created here with all the after-school programs that make that a beacon this is what we mean by beacon center lead by the investing of the city and county of san francisco we're pouring in over $4 million in

each and all of beacon centers that's y where superintendent wants me to go each - but it's our city investment that demonstrates to the private sector we're putting in our investment here our kids are our investment join us in making them your investment do more than watch invest and you'll see the parent and community come alive more than in the past so this is where we are going to make a difference for bayview this is a beacon center a central place marie a sue lined the agencies to be part of the beacon center along with the city agencies we're going to have a heavy dose of philanthropic support when willie and i talk with ceo's

we'll be in unison but snavn in unison about what we're doing where the board of education because the more we talk about us obey the world-class education center the more inviting it is for the investments to want to be here and this is why we're the center of attention the mayors will want to know what's happening in this school but how this dream comes about as such an inviting investment to all the ceo's in the city we will make a difference in a very short future for all our kids that's why i wanted police officers families to live in san francisco fire department families to live in san francisco the teachers to be able to afford more as we aggressively build more for the

nickel and dimed folks we want to grow all the tenant and have it supported last night i was asked the question and continuing be asked i get an opportunity it answer what do you want what do you really want out of our school system in san francisco i want a school system that's embraced our community and our city to embrace that that means that you'll never have teachers reaching into their own pockets to buy things the companies will do that the talent that sophia wants matched by those who are here physically engaging with the students and parents that more than hope that they believe and they'll be here because that parental engagement in this school will be at the highest level because of what we're

investing is this is more than the promise the physical manifestations of one of the best schools that will produce and reset the standards of the schools so the entire is system joins us in our world-class standards for the future if so what i believe and i'm so happy that that is got the name willie brown jr. when i was working for him he demanded the best out of all all of us through that effort we knew we could challenge all the coworkers in the city with that i'd like to welcome former mayor willie brown his main school for the future we only have to fill in the glass and maybe we'll get gold in the future

(laughter) (clapping) >> mr. mayor supervisor cohen elected members of the school board and, of course, the instructor demetrious and families particularly sophia and her mom and the families and even though people that live in this neighborhood you have no idea how proud i am at the moment and how proud i will be this is on the first 2 hundred walk through the door and look at it what we have here and to see how far we've come mr. mayor that was i don't know

2005 i think when then superintendent arching man came up along with the school board of something called the dream schools all in that you are not of trying to make it possible with the quality education in san francisco's public schools to be equal to any collection of schools anywhere in the describing country and a pioneering effort by the school board and that superintendent their eliminates were imposed there was actually zero money mr. mayor there were almost no companies or ceo's that had any interest in public education to the dennis degree that you've be able to drive that 1y5ur7bd

among them in san francisco be that as it may but a wonderful school board and superintendent arching man did her best i was in a facility to train cops to be cops it proved to be not productive for cops cops moved on to something better and left the facility and school board and the superintendent tried to make it into a school it proved not to be a good match and fortunately for all of us the city and the school board and the people had the courage to shut it down and attempt to conceive of something far greater i can remember mr. superintendant i don't think you were superintendent snafbs you were not rode by you brought me

out for this first occasion in a room when the architects had what they had in mind and believe me what they had in mind was like yesterday compared to what we're looking at today, the effort was made starting with the concepts that had been done by those combiftdz and talented and well trained people they invited senate file i can't see mother and you'll the other mothers they invited did school board members and invited people from every agency of city government and my daughter susan got the responsibly to show up particle for every meeting i don't know the total number of month to month but prosecute a transformation of that concept to the reality that you have so logically described mr. mayor and to what we're standing in so what we're looking at and the

projections of things that will come this august when the first 2 hundred students are not limited to an incredible journey a journey that's been carefully clagsd cataloged and and recorded it's been careful written about and will be written about because mr. superintendant i think henceforth, in every future bond measure that will be the book that the citizens of the city will be able to look at and see what's possible if they're willing to do with what they've done with the projects called schools and mr. mayor you were right when you asked me did you get a chance to open a school i said no, i didn't i thought and thought and thought mayor ed lee

is so blessed everything good happens on his watch (laughter). >> it's like the lord was mad at gavin not me but really great things and mr. mayor this is one of the great things i look forward mr. principle you are recruited no warrant were issued for you in chicago (laughter) pursue i came out to san francisco long before this building was to be opened and you started the process of doing what you need to do to make sure that not only does the building reflect the dreams that the board and the superintendent and the citizens had when they said let's do that but you notified the community to get to know you

on a firearm basis i said someone you going to demetrious school it's not demetrious school (laughter) i don't care what he's been telling you i am just overjoyed and ion above the entire willie brown jr. willie brown clan we are looking forward to the first day of school and i can't imagine ever having as many people as you said that made applications i can only assume the concept that has been so appropriately described has caused the families of senate file i can't see and others to sign on but the physical realty of walking through those fabulous doors i agree there

ought to be goals (laughter) somewhere maybe around my portrait (laughter). >> but i think when we walk through the doors you're going to be inundated there won't be 365 next time around but multiples and believe me mr. mayor i suspect the sdieshltd of this school at the middle school level will exceed the desirability of families trying to get into school it will be the power point of the rest of the schools reflecting the commitment you've made mr. mayor to the development the families in this city and i'm more than over enjoyed that that carries the name that my mother gave me

thank you (clapping). >> so how in the world does anyone follow willie brown mr. mayor we're so proud that building that be fitting our legacy so thank you for honoring us today, there maybe a lot of folks that drive over the bridge that don't call it the willie brown bridge but under will be a lot of the kids going to the willie brown jr. middle school before i turn it over to principle hobson ladies and gentlemen, this didn't happen without enlightened people policymakers people that are elected and i'm very, very proud to introduce the members of the board of education our president
