5:30 am
is a change in location, assignment of a school? how does that work? let's say as of today going forward how would that communication happen between the school district and muni? >> so what we're recommending is that we identify a single point of contact. what typically happens now is the principal reaches out either to myself and suzanne in the schedules department or sue lu who is known to the principals and has that relationship. do . >> do we know who the point of contact is or is it being worked out? >> >> for the short term it's candace but we will identify somebody who more long-term can maintain those relationships. >> okay. great. thank you very much. >> thank you supervisor campos and thank you. i was really
5:31 am
very impressed by the presentation and how data rich sfmta is. it was great to get all of the information and i know you didn't have a lot of time to do that so i appreciate the work. this is really a first step. we want to ensure that the dialogue and collaboration continues because i think there is a lot of work that all of our agencies can be doing together to make sure that we're providing the best transportation system possible for our students and having said that at this time before we may have other presenters speak i want to be sensitive to the time. we have many members of the public to speak and i would like to open public comment at this time and leave time for more discussion and questions after that. thank you. >> so at this time opening up for public comment if you would like to speak please line up and approach the microphone. yes
5:32 am
and while folks are lining up commissioner mendoza wanted to make some additional points. >> thank you. i just wanted to thank the director of facilities and david golden and nick director of sustainability who are here today and both acknowledged that we need better communications with mta so as the board members direct them to find the appropriate point person so you have a connection at the school district but i wanted to thank them for being here. >> thank you. please approach the mic. >> good afternoon board of supervisors. i aman drew and attend lowell school and for the past six years i have been riding muni to get in and out of my school. i first rode the
5:33 am
one california from mission to chinatown and the bus drove students from my school and from washington school and prisido and ucsf and the communicate i spend everyday during middle school was two hours and now i am waking up every morning at 6:00 a.m. to go catch the 3045 or another -- or k line to go across the city to lowe and i notice there are students from ccsf, sf state, balboa, mercy and [inaudible] all riding the same bus with mean and muni is our school bus. we all need to go to school around like 8:00 a.m. and sometimes there's like -- you know, sometimes i
5:34 am
will like -- sometimes i would miss it just a few minutes before and it's 30 minutes before the first class and i check the timer and it's 16 minutes before the next one and those are the only -- those two lines are the only way to get to school, and i feel that the metro station should like make the k line more abundant and reliable for like the sake of the early school riders, early student riders and i hope improving transit lines and finding -- exploring for more dedicated transit lines that get us to school without the anxiety of being tardy. thank you. >> can i ask a follow up question so on a good day when you catch the buses on time how
5:35 am
long does it take to get from chinatown to lowell? >> roughly 35 minutes. like traffic -- it's heavily influenced by traffic and the metro is -- it just goes straight and really fast. >> so on a good day from home to school takes 35 minutes? >> yes. >> and on a day where you missed -- >> usually the one bus at a certain time and once you get off of the 8x and you can catch it and sometimes miss it by a few seconds and you have to wait a long time. >> and how long is the commute on a bad day? >> >> about 50 minutes. >> thank you so much.
5:36 am
>> thank you. >> good afternoon board of supervisors. my name is david is i'm also a student at lowell lowell high school and i live in visitacion valley and everyday i go to the school and transfer at balboa park to take the 29 but the thing with the 29 it serves many high schools want for example it goes. >> >> [inaudible] high school and balboa and lincoln and colleges and city college and [inaudible] and [inaudible] valley middle school. every time i take the morning buses i always have skip at least one bus pass me by to at least get on the bus because after that many buses come by and i don't really have time to get on a crowded -- i can't get on a crowded bus because many times bus drivers will skip you
5:37 am
or push you out because they don't want you behind the yellow line so there is an issue with equity here and the 29 is serving many schools here but the time to stop isn't enough because the run time is eight to 10 minutes and that time isn't enough because most of the students really want to take the bus at a certain time to get to school. for us at lowell we get to school around 730 or 725 and get to school at the time and many take it at balboa park so we don't have enough time to take it and another issue when we go home from school we -- at lowell we have all of the other schools before us and we get off at 330 and two schools being very crowded so i want you guys to please increase the amount of buses running in the morning and the afternoon to help increase the amount of ridership and
5:38 am
ensure that we get to home and school on time. thank you. >> thank you. >> hello everyone. i am stephanie and i am a youth leader at ccdc so there are many bus routes that bring students to school, but then the problem is how long it takes for students to get to school because there are bus stops where it takes students a long time for them to get there, and then have to wait for a long time, especially those from excelsior bay view and other districts and during that time
5:39 am
there might be buses that are crowded, so then they will skip the stop, and the students have to wait more. also there are students have to take multiple of transits just to get to school which takes a long time, and then they might be late to class which takes a way their education time, so i think there should be -- muni should find a way to provide services so that students can get to school on time. thank you. >> thank you. if i can just ask a couple more questions. if you could speak specifically to certain lines that you would like to increase service on or mention how long it takes to get to school on average on a good day or longer day? >> i think that the 30 should
5:40 am
have more bus lines because there are many people from chinatown who needs to ride the bus, and i don't take the bus because i can just walk to school. >> thank you. >> hello everyone. i am david yee and i go to galileo high school and i live in visitacion valley, so on an average school day i take the 8bx and the 30 to school and most of my problems come from the 8bx that comes in the morning so i take the first one everyday. the first one comes at 650 and i am not sure what happened here but it used to come earlier around 640 and gradually it started coming later and later and this causes a lot of crowdedness and over
5:41 am
population, and this causes a lot of issues as well. things like people forced to be on the stairs and extremely dangerous and probably not [inaudible], so also the first 8bx that comes around 650 now is rather consistent but the second one can have , well the intervals aren't consistent at all. for example the second bus can come five minutes after the first bus or 20 minutes after and of course this will cause problems and my second issue is that i have noticed this mainly on the 30 bus going to school and leaving school, so buses that aren't crowded can appear crowded because of people that crowd around the steps, so there's a lot of people
5:42 am
standing at a certain area and makes the bus seem crowded but in reality in the back and the middle there is plenty of space, and bus drivers often try to tell everyone to get to the rear but this doesn't work and this is where i see the addition of the on bus enforcement helpful. thank you. >> thank you. and when the timer goes off always feel free to finish our sentence. i know it's alarming but please feel free to finish the sentence after the bell rings. >> my name is david. i live in bay view and i attend galileo high school. so as you can guys can probably understand the location of where i live and the school that i attend is almost
5:43 am
half a city apart, and takes me very long to go to my school. that's not the biggest problem here. every morning i have to leave my house around 615 even though the bus stop is practically right in front of my house i still have to leave my house very early due to the fact that i have to take the t. i have two routes. i can take the t and then the 30 on market street or i can take the t and switch to 8bx and then the 30 and both routes are really unreliable. the talways -- th -- the timer -- i don't know what to say. it says 10 minutes but really it comes five minutes later, so even when i
5:44 am
leave my house earlier than i really should, and i need -- i'm a high school student. i need my sleep and if says it's coming at that time. >> thank you. if i can ask you how long it takes on the best and slowest days? >> on the best day and i leave my house and there is a t there and i don't have to wait that long for the 30 it will take me 40 to 45 minutes to go to school
5:45 am
early. >> commissioner fewer has a question as well. >> yes, i wanted to know because of muni when you're late for school what happens when you tell them you're late because of muni? >> well, i can't tell them anything. i just go into class. >> don't you need a tardy pass or something. >> no. >> i think that's only if -- i don't know. i have never been that late, but -- >> you start at 615, but i am wondering what -- so that's okay. i was just wondering what a school policy is with students that arrive late to school and they're late for class what response the teachers have and
5:46 am
how sympathetic are the schools are to the situation. that's all. thank you for sharing. >> my teachers don't really care. they see me enter a class and you're here. that's it. >> okay. they're probably really glad to see you. thanks. >> what is the start time for you? >> 8:00 o'clock. >> 8:00 o'clock. thank you. >> good afternoon board of supervisors. i am steven chang from the bay view district and i currently attend galileo high school. personally when i take the bus to school it usually takes around 10 minutes to wait for the bus if one leaves and for the 54 it's very inconsistent and usually takes around 20 to 30 minutes. that's why when i come home from school i usually have to walk back
5:47 am
home, so the inconsistency of the 54 really like makes the time for me to get home longer. besides that i see a cluster of buses every time i go to school or go somewhere because when i go somewhere i see that the time waiting for the bus is around 10 minutes, and when the 10 minutes end i see that there are four or five buses coming together, and that was very strange for me because i always -- like i never see the people -- even when i get off the bus from that stop i never seen that before. more
5:48 am
over the t it's -- i take it during from 630 to 650 and it usually -- there's usually isn't that many, so i would like more t's from 630 to 650 since that's when most people are coming or going to school. thank you for your time. >> thank you. >> hello sfmta boards. i am andy and a youth leader from ccdc. i take the 30 to galileo high school. by the time i get on the bus it's usually packed with seniors that buy groceries and students that go to marina and francisco and galileo.
5:49 am
oftentimes there is a lack of buses which explains why it is densely populated. the bus can cause problems. i used to go to presidio middle school and by the time i leave school and get on the one california it's packed with seniors and students that go to galileo presidio and washington. if a student or senior fall the rest of the students and seniors will fall. i like to request the sfmta boards to provide special buses with senior and students feel more safe and more enjoyable
5:50 am
rides. thank you. >> thank you. >> good afternoon everyone. my name is shirlee and also a youth leader from ccdc. as many of our youth leaders have said we think that school bus routes are important, especially to those low income and transit dependent students who take the bus to school everyday and may be limited to the opportunity to go to the school of their choice. for many immigrant low income families many of the parents might not have the time to take their kids to school because they have to work for long hours so they might not have the time to drive them to school in the morning. if these students attend school that far away from their neighborhoods it would require them long commute hours and probably multiple bus transfers to get to school especially in the southeast
5:51 am
neighborhood such as the bay view district or the visitacion valley and there are less schools for them to choose. also as one of the youth leaders have previously stated managing to get to school on time early is also an important and difficult task to do because of some of the inaccuracy of the bus arrival times. for example, i am actually a sf state student and i go to -- i live in ocean view which is pretty near to school but because of the free muni for youth program that i am still part of i usually take the metro to get to school but one time it said that i had to wait for five or 10 minutes but i ended up waiting 30 minutes which i could have just walked to class. muni is a life line for many students. we know this by the fact that many youth fought for the free muni program and we know that many students
5:52 am
rely on the public transportation to get to school, so this is why school bus routes are important to be well utilized and implemented into these student's travel patterns. dedicated school bus lines would create more convenience for students and commute on school on a daily basis and we want to thank the city to provide safety to these students for commuting to school for funding for vision zero. thank you. >> thank you. >> hello am my name is emma and i'm a youth commissioner and i live 10 minutes walk from here and everyday i take the k or m at 645 and get to school around 730. what i have noticed that the buses are crowded both in
5:53 am
the beginning and at the end of the school times, but especially after school because that's when extra curriculars end and there is sort of a heard herd of people awk on the bus stop and i want to comment on the first week of school where the teachers give students books to bring home. >> >> and what i noticed that people will be holding their books and will have backpacks and it's hard to grab on to the handle bars and also i have noticed that people who are vertically challenged like me have trouble holding on to the bars sometimes and yeah thank you. >> thank you for that feedback . >> good afternoon. my name is [inaudible]. i'm a chinatown resident and at galileo high
5:54 am
school. i think 30 is the bus that mta to extend service in the morning because i always take the 30 to galileo high school and every morning when the 30 gets to chinatown the first stop is always crowded with students. those students already stepping on the stairs so the youth and students can get on and some of the bus will skip the stop because it's so crowded already so i just want the mta to extend the service because the 30 is so tiny. it's like the short one so limited space. i want them to have the longer space so more students can get on the bus and there's other problem. i know that because of the bus is so crowded many of the students that walk to school instead of taking the bus so i want you to pay more attention to the po tecialt safety and more students can get to school safely and thank you. >> thank you so much. are
5:55 am
there any other members of the public that would like to speak so this item? seeing none. public comment is now closed. [gavel] . i just want to thank all of the students that came to speak today. it's important to have your actual voices heard at these hearings so thank you for making the time to be here, so commissioners, supervisors any comments or questions? okay. again i know commissioner mendoza recognized that the staff from sfusd that mere to speak on the item and i want to thank you for being today to answer any questions if we had any so thank you for your time as well. i think that this is a really, really important discussion and this is the right committee to be having a discussion that talks about better agency coordination between sfusd and one of our city agencies. i think that i learned a lot in today's hearing based on the data presented
5:56 am
today and i really love to continue to see coordination to work to improve especially upon some of the comments we heard today and what i think i largely heard partially of course was the time to get to school but seems like a larger issue is the frequency of the buses to ensure that students it get on when buses are crowded and they're skipping stops and of course its connection to next muni which i love but can be very frustrated by when i see it go to zero and no bus and have to wait for the 15 minutes for the next bus but i am glad we had this first hearing. i hope we can continue the discussion today so seeing no further comments i would like to make a motion to continue this to the call of the chair. we have a motion. we can do that without opposition. madam clerk are there any other announcements?
5:57 am
>> there are none supervisor. >> can i -- >> i'm sorry. commissioner wynns. >> thank you. i want to remind the committee i have asked several times that we have a hearing on the after school bra initiative. >> i am sorry i didn't get that. >> i would have liked it before but i know we had scheduling conflicts with our own staff and i think they might have that for the next couple of months so i would like to ask that someone work with the staff to figure out a time for that. if we had that hearing prior to this month we would have been publicly discussing expanded after school opportunities for people in the school assignment process but if we do it later it would be before school starts when people are thinking about school. i don't know when is the best time but i think it's important since we did so much work and expansion of after school opportunities to be
5:58 am
publicly discussed so people understand what we're doing before school starts next year. >> great. our office will work on that if you can let us know the appropriate staff person we will do that. just so the committee is aware there are at least four items pending for april and may. we have one on homeless families within the school district which i know was a great discussion in december recently with a major grant from some of the private sector folks. we have a continuation of an item on the work that our planning department is doing with sfusd on the growing population and whether we need to plan also to build schools or grow schools with our population growing which is very exciting, and we do also have on the docket a hearing item on the health curriculum and sexual relationships in consent curriculum as well, so i know
5:59 am
supervisor cohen also has a hearing on the docket we're we're trying to schedule and that is what is coming up over the next coming months. madam clerk are there any announcements? >> no, there are none supervisor. >> seeing none meeting is adjourned. [gavel] thank you everyone. i.
6:00 am
>> welcome everybody i'm going to start the program well, to 1915 yeah. >> yeah. >> and if you look around you might see charlie chaplin and laura is here and if you look really closely that devil art smith that here so i'd like to start the show with first of all, how many were you at the palace of the fine arts did you have fun and go to the ugly this one my friend jan is here who originated it did light were breathing taking did you love them so let's people e keep that time travel going
