popular programs like spanish it has many programs and french has 41 programs yet no tagalog programs but having programs in a larger group of native-american we have 24 thousand strong groups of larger indigent folks in alaska so whether or not a program should be implemented or sustained shouldn't be an issue. >> please wrap up. >> there are 4.4 million filipino that is multi racial children and 4 hundred and 54 thousand live in san francisco tagalog is the largest population in san francisco and this is the. 1:25 am
to supporting this. >> commissioner mendoza-mcdonnell. >> thank you this committee for the hard work and effort and making the adjustments and entertaining a lot of our requests and supporting the changes you've presented in front of us i'm role pleased to see all you have in here first of all, and just want to comment been the filipino language program i want to thank all the community advocates that came out and shared the importance of their heritage language and the value it has in keeping our communities together as well as supporting many of our students who have both speak the language and want to learn the language as many ever you know languages are important to me and it is also important to have well
1:26 am
articulated programs i think the allocation that multi language departments has given to add to the .4 to provide a one .0 fte fellowship language specialist who will help to develop the program is critical what we want to do going forward so i do want to thank chris trainee wong for spending the amount of time with us and really understand where our deep concerns were coming from and really hamburger hearing us out in any conversations with christina we talked about the kind of the gap in elementary school versus middle school and high school and how our skids need to be be able to come through a program that is well articulated with a smoothed
1:27 am
transition we've had challenges because we haven't had the support in our multi lingual department to insure our teachers and our community is well supported to insure that articulation is managed well and that the resources are provided which includes the curriculum materials and strong language program i think what this one point get we'll finally be able to have one a filipino language speaker and advocate in multi lingual that will be able to help us understand the gaps and support our teachers more fully so we have a fully articulated program from k through 12 so i also wanted to make sure that i add
1:28 am
that currently at betsy a k through 12 articulation programming that's been supported but we also have our kids that are in third through fifth and 6 through 8 i want to make sure in the transition of adding a new staff member that one we do not create a difference in programs we're not taking our middle grades and starting something that doesn't flow with our k through 12 which will be growing so i think that the investigative work and research and the planning that the person will be facilitating will help us to understand that i absolutely does not want to see our kids not in the early articulated programs so again from third to 8th grade fuel there the cracks and not have
1:29 am
support that insures the fireman they choose when they went to betsey carmichael in particular is intact in some way i want to say that out loud it is important to make sure we're providing strong articulation again that goes through all the grades somebody that helped us to fund the program at balboa i think our intention is clear we want to provide an opportunity for students going into high school to have the opportunity to learn or retain their heritage language or other speakers that point to learner the filipino lunge what we're worried me about implementing that program you know with principle caring was supportive is that the lack of
1:30 am
having it be sustainable so my expectation again is to have the filipino language program specialist role look to see how we sustain a program if the high schools you know through the funding support and allows us in conversations with the budget committee to look at going forward so again, a huge thank you to the advocates we got you know you organized, i got leave folks to rally around this and expressed the importance of our language and i really want to appreciate all of you that cute in particular our young people that shared what it means to for them to be able to keep their language to be able to communicate with their families and stay in their communities without getting lost bogging
