9:21 am
here to recommend adaptation for the u.s. history as noted in the report you have the committee followed the process that sfusd has used for many years when if looked at structural materials and makes selections committee was made up of teachers from diverse schools and after reviewing some key information they developed criteria and used that criteria to reevaluated the structural materials it included the content and historical organization through a blind analysis they didn't know what book they were looking at they made the selection. >> david knight will their his information. >> hello. thank you
9:22 am
yes, we went through the process described that was enjoyable and blind we were all experienced ap u.s. history teachers we looked at them with the criteria and the new test given on friday the new framework to see what books fit most with the students we teach and that would address their needs and their success in the course so we were requesting that the board adopts the following structural materials in the placement of u.s. history it is by the people by james w frazier this year thank you, thank you very much i have no speaker cards on this item comments from the board?
9:23 am
>> yes. >> i'm sorry student delegates. >> this was the textbook that was sitting on the - i took this last year and get a four sadly but looked at the it looks more easier to read when you look at it the old one you don't want to read it it didn't look frantically to the students i'm happy it looks nice i've read is it about two months it was thorough very novice. >> thank you commissioner wynns. >> thank you. i want to thank you for all the work i looked at the book today and i have my sort of butterfly in the sand and what i was on the board actually about 20 years i was
9:24 am
did a lot of work with jean wraun and had a lot of meetings with the publishes with the text book we made a pack we're not going to adapt any more chinese history books nonetheless they have the logo and i think we i mean this was a big lesson advocacy and the responsibility of the school board members i have a general question about the general content and question not for you but i think we need the public hearing about what i want to know about the consent it is getting more representative so another school board member didn't have to have a show you down and as teachers
9:25 am
your experience with how those boxes have evolved over time it feels before i was on the board as you recall i don't know if you remember a huge conflict in california about american history textbooks i'll say i want to know the books are heavy really big and heavy i want to know from our staff not the teachers necessarily what we're doing to so that students don't have to log them back and forth in the past we've talked about having a book for all kids to take home so they don't have to carry them home those books are heavy and not the only ones to carry around and related ordinance you know what are we
9:26 am
doing to those materials what about online and kids don't center to carry them they'll be out-of-date anyway and can you tell me how much each book costs ? >> the question each ask the edition is hundred and 37. >> i can maybe address the first question whether there be more diverse we specifically look for that and yeah, we talk about the chinese exclusion act we looked at 3 specific parts this book we are that happy everybody said oh, wow. there's
9:27 am
mexican-american and that's the first time i've seen that included we read a letter he wrote specific to the san francisco unified school district this author really were trying to include perspectives and we recognized that that was one of the materials we picked this one over others. >> appreciate it. >> superintendent. >> then commissioner fewer. >> thank you, dr. murase so commissioner wynns question about the port ability of the book as the violation 2024 and moving forward towards a digital this is one we'll have as we move to the digital context we're preying along with many skbtsdz preying on publishes to make their context more digital
9:28 am
so we don't have to carry around a 7 pound textbook and quite frankly only on a good day but it gives the teachers and publishes the opportunity to update their information and it is not quite there yet but the movement to make that a reality and the good news the district is part of the digital district plan moving towards vision 2025 is rapidly on the cutting-edge. >> presuming we'll do you want those books and will 0 not have to do it again. >> that's more than hope a promise. >> commissioner fewer. >> so it's mined that is common core that is only one piece of the curriculum and all the other stuff supplement the inception
9:29 am
of material is that correct. >> what all history courses including apples to apples the movement is towards the textbook is one resource and teachers should look towards other resources. >> great that's exactly when i wanted to hear when we hear about this i mean u.s. history a fairly long for one textbook i'll hope to see an infusion ever different representing also the struggles and history of the people in the united states and i wanted to mention as a curriculum committee meekly e meeting around the equalities of the u.s. history in the ab history classes that teaching also that going along with that how long you've taught the course and the way you engage
9:30 am
students is a craft that requires time with the trial and error i'm hoping to see schools that have been teaching those courses are pesticide this craft and getting good with passing grades and student engagement is high we'll see a sharing of this resources amongst the schools that are beginning to build their app program that distribution is equitable i want to make that comment i know you've heard it but for the listening public thank you very much. >> seeing no other cards i'd like to say i was in a conference room with ms. wynns looking at the materials i want to thank all the members of the staff that
