return to their academic learn they need a physical space to cool down a space for support staff be is social workers or teachers that help them through social and emotional healing to return to the classroom please support this in the long run we all benefit. >> i'm the charter president of the 10 to one my mom was a special ed teacher in if if her role was to be a crisis teacher which is managing steak this kind of out of classroom space i've heard stories over the years how important this is to especially students that have particular trauma experiences are who are dealing with things
10:01 am
overwhelming and difficult to deal with in the clamor environmentalist environment so having a quote separate space so for one-on-one times with the staff to help you through those situations is a really effective strategy for restrag students to make sure they don't sit with the secretarys who are fewer and fewer over time as you recall and continue learning thank you. >> hello, i'm neil a member of a lion's the community and arts and but most of all i'm a parent here in san francisco and after listening to those children talk about the problems they go through nothing i can say to do better i think in
10:02 am
every clamor we need a paraprofessional to help the children and also when you send a child out of a classroom they need to have somewhere to go we want to send a child to another classroom and number 3 when the schools you're confronted with parents you're not only there to help it child learner you should be there to help that parent so they can help the child to put children through school and give us a better education to do better in the world. >> hello, i'm doorwaycy i teach first grade i want to as a say clearly i speak for all teachers we absolutely speak this which
10:03 am
were shouldn't be suspend from school because of behavorial problems, however safety maybe an issue or the lesson is disrupted for that students and the rest of the students in the class so the idea of a paraprofessional is definitely essential students are acting out are crying out for help you can't also give that child did hope help so they'll act out to get my attention so having a paraprofessional or to me to whisper in their area and talk about how they can take a break and handle their anger is seeshlt now, however sometimes that doesn't work and throwing they need to be out of the classroom we need to put them someplace not next to the secretary and not at home
10:04 am
finally one more thing i'm lucky to have supportive parents that respond well when i call them we need to have more of an engagement plan for the parents at our site not wait for the ss t to get the parents in to discuss their children's needs. >> thank you very much. >> good evening i'm kevin i work as an advocate for the children youth with the close the gap if the downtown high school a lot of the works e work is centered after a budgetedy way to support the schools resolution and the students and families and staff needs additional resources to help the school district to reach all the children support we want to echo the comments to commitments to the families and staff we need to have paraprofessionals in downtown high school and especially like

10:15 am
ready to feinstein launch our own co 13 we've had a lot of conversations about the pros and cons first spectacular you public schools that is a vehicle it is purpose to stand the private philanthropic investment with the in time board which and vehicle to allow more direct involvement i'm sure you're aware of with the strong leadership of all of you and the superintendant many folks have said we want to fund with you dribble we like working with you and trust how your managing the results but a number of organizations have a approximate and having a 5703 c-3 in
10:16 am
investing directly is helpful the board of directors to sort add like the board of education and we'll talk about that the roles in a minute and the staffing of this will be the activities will be executed by our strategy and fundamental team that is in the superintendants office and, of course, why we need it we don't have to remind anyone in this audience about the lack of fund in the public educations and with more fund coming available with the philanthropic folks allows us the leeway in the literacy where we have a plan and expand more quickly to more schools or innovating with next practices we want to shift towards the graduating graduate profile the model people have
10:17 am
asked why do you want to do this this is like other 501-c 1921 what we like instead of out is ours, if you will, our function we want to do as many higher ed organizations for example go sf in our backyard they have their own office next to the office of the president and they report to the superintendant it reduces overhead costs and aligned to the universities goals and mission we feel we're on solid ground of modeling this after the higher education but we want to be clear about is how do we have long-standing and new partnership organizations in nonprofits role united airlines and collaborating we have a
10:18 am
long-standing partnerships are the ed fund with volunteers and new executive director that works closely and partnered with sf city around circle the schools and bringing smaller tech companies in and long relationship with the san francisco annunciations foundation and now the chamber of commerce organization want to work with us to support our schools those folks had been either directly on our board or advisory to the board the stark sf public schools allows us to have a coordinating table to look at how our work comes together around our priorities and the sf ed fund works a volunteer program and program at our school days and work with the chamber of commerce and the

organization they have or individual donors ambassador people that shape air campaigns and goals hawked meeting and help us to help the annual fundraising events as organizations do and they will be helping you think i us to bring more people to the table getting the word out about the great work and review the annual audits for the other to increase furnished confidence and our board is still helping with the policy and leadership we continue to work with the board to promote the benefits of investing in sfusd and want to partner with you to make sure that the furnished are into our portfolio are aligned to our vision and values and that is afforded to everyone i've spoken to you know from teachers to
10:21 am
principals to all of you on the board and help us to conduct the funders on the impact of the investment so this positive story is getting told and those are the benefits sort of. >> summary so when people ask what it the benefits of having the 501-c 3 we want to reduce the costs and the middleman as much as possible to and then the entrants and integrate them into the work of our district and that is what we believe the 501-c that allows us to do and again, the fund development office has 5 major goals we are be reporting to the superintendant but service technical to the 501-c 3 we'll not need to hire more staff and the budget and finance and legal
10:22 am
just as we do with the current grants we'll provide that technical support for the funded and then a quick timeline one of the things we would like to do is just get final feedback from all of you we'll be the superintendant will be appointed a board of directors many you, you have given us names and the legal department does the initial filing we need to recruit and orient the board of directors and hold the meeting and have them dot bylaws and i on the day the new board of directors approvals those because of these we wait for the irs but all the folks giving to us will be considered

10:25 am
balling or other policy in the organization at the can't donate directly in a publicly governmental agency unfortunately, we are we're a bureaucracy sometimes that allows people to make directly investments into the where had we've established and the last thing i'll say the seat change is become that 6 years ago when i came to san francisco and we were having those conversations with the people in the community business and philanthropic organizations, etc. everyone wanted to work with the middleman we'll work with the middleman to support it the sea change anyone wants to work with the middleman they believe in

this is something that is - we're not only we but everyone is invent now ways to support the public agencies and you know we've had some fits and starts i know but i think everybody has i think we're way ahead and all the foundation work we've done all the discussions the fact we'll have clearly articulated in our vision what we mean by working with private partners all of that is for the good so i'm very supportive i think that is a great idea the next thing to work with the private board of this entity which is really private mechanism that is part
10:28 am
of the psychopath and i'll have to disagree is it not unfortunate we're on public agency that is a good thing but the necessities that the private support for public activities especially those as important as what we do is actually, one of the components of getting adequate fund for the important work that is done so i'm very happy about this i appreciate we've had a chance to be given input as the development went along and what i was talking about to the superintendant on monday we it occurred to me even though this is actual name the component of our private support i think the concept and the vision of this conjured up of

10:30 am
district for the better so just the last thing i want to say is that as we're looking at to put the that his together in terms of who is going to serve and how we're going to move this forward in terms of the board and what it is going to look like intentional making sure that we've had those conversations not ethnicity wise but cross disciplines in the work with the board members had participate in the skills to increase the resources in the district. >> commissioner vice president haney. >> thank you commissioner president murase. >> thank you, laura for the way you've engaged with the board we've had a number of conversations as the structure was put together as we thought about the
