and efficiently as possibly. i would thrike welcome the president of small business commission mr. mark white to make brief opening remarks >> hello there. thank you president breed, good afternoon supervisors. i'm mark dewite president of small business commission and local business owner and manufacturer [inaudible] in historic dog patch neighborhood in district 10. thank you supervooizer cohen. it is my honor and pleasure today to join you to celebrate san francisco's small business week and recognize 11 special small businesses, one from each district with our small business honoree program. last night we officially kicked off the 11th annual san francisco small business week with flavors of san francisco event at the met reonwhere 1500 attendees

enjoyed food and sweets and beverages from local restaurants and makers. this years theme is celebrate small businessism we have much to celebrate. small business deserves to be celebrated, it is the small businesses that help shape our communities and neighborhoods and creates a vibrant community we all love and tourists love about us. we all know that small business ownership is difficult, but it is also supremely rewarding. san francisco has nearly 80 thousand small business with 100 employees or less. they range from dog walkers [inaudible] retailers, manufacturers, massage practitioner, lawyers, market consultants, architects, designers florist, all kind of

different professions, the list goes on. small businesses are the economic backbon of the neighborhood corridors providing for the needs of residence and visitors. generally, small businesses thrive when the city thrives and also struggle when the city struggle. today however, we face something of a paradox of extreme prosperity and all of the small business owners face affordability issues. affordability impacts comtitian for commercial space, rising rents, sh rinking praurpt margin and these are the realties for todays small business owners especially in san francisco and throughout the bay area and throughout the country. the small business commission and office of small business are thankful for close partnerships they developed with members of borebd of supervisors and mayors office that allows to work toward

mitigating todays small business challenges and prevent the institution of obticals to business formation and grouth. in the past year with your support we launched an award winning business portal, the office of small sknz served over 3 thousand business clients. we worked with the the planning department to establish a community business priority process program to expedite conditional use process in certain circumstances and developed a response system for businesses that face disaster. supervisor farrell, with your leadership, the office of small business and [inaudible] to date the office of small business sponsored 7 loans totaling 33 thousand dollars to local small business. thank you for that. there are many more accomplishments but today you'll recognize 11 of san franciscos most special

here. it is no small thing. they run 2 small businesses in district 3 and raise a family. thaare the apitomy of small business owners. there is a lot to love about jay and melissa. they own little vine on grand avenue in north beach and the uniier larter in russian hill thrmpt a number of things about those businesses that bare or attention. both are pioneering locations. they selected spots where we said is anyone going to walk that far for a sandwich and created a sense of community. they opened little vine in hard times, economically when money was tite and the recession was making the starting of business difficult. one of the first encounters that some of the members of the public had i was contacted by a nairp columnist that [inaudible] the loss of heritage

business in north beach [inaudible] had been forced to close, the cesars closed and the [inaudible] sad brt the chaimpgs. i said we are sad, but have you been to the little vine or [inaudible] it landed up we got a article about the great and thriving new businesses in north beach which made us happy. i was pleased like a lot of businesses they r had trouble with the permit squz licenses [inaudible] coming on down for the thursday evening wine tasties so i think everyone has come around. there is a lot to love. they sell local goods. jay makes the best sandwich in north beach. don't tell the old timers. i'm sure this is a future hairatize business so want to congratuless jay and melissa on a great job and say how pleased we are to have them as a small business in

and up next is supervisor farrell >> thank you president breed. colleagues i get the chance to honor a small business today in district 2 i have been going to my entire life so it is fun to bring them up. gill hawjs. gill, come up. the owners of liverpool [inaudible] made recent headlines over the past few weeks, it suffered a fire in the building and working to repair and reopen but want to welcome them here today. liverpool [inaudible] started in 1973. prior to

opening lils raffle traveled to liverpool to visit friend and soak up the pub life. he met a bar made in liverpool and they developed a relationship and brought her over to the united states here in san francisco and built [inaudible] for her. a true labor of love. eddy and [inaudible] and gill and jennifer hawjs bought liverpool lil in 2006 and maintained to what it is today. [inaudible] liver poom lives is on [inaudible] street [inaudible] of the presidio. it is one of our top neighborhood restaurants, everyone loves it. people

go to lils to do everything from amazing food and french onion soup to hang outin the public. my dad used to frequent it as a bar patron for yoors growing up. the one thing i remember is going with my 2 parents as a only kid and the atmosphere is still the same today as it was decades ago when i grew up and it is a nugz in the city and inside of district 2 and [inaudible] and marina. i wish you all the best as you recover from the fire damage. i know what a drag that is to go through, but it is a pleasure for me to honor you guys and bring you up here today. someone that has been going to your restaurant my entire life. i bought my kids there. congratulations and thank you for all you do

>> thank you supervisor mar, you are up next >> thank you president breed. colleagues at a committee hearing last week the planning director mentioned san francisco has a heart and identified the central down town corridor on market street as the heart of san francisco. i understood his comments but i wanted to-i said back to him that

in my opinion the heart of san francisco is where the people are, but it is also where the small businesses are, the 80 thousand mentioned by mr. diwite. one of the amazing small businesses along clument street is park life and want to ask jimmy alexander and [inaudible] i will explain how they revitalized the corridor with a muchant association. they bring fun and excitement and creativity to the neighborhood. i see them during the farmers market sunday morning and in the evening as a drop by. i love the types of items they have in their stor, but let me explain what park life is. they are a independent retail store and art gallery. they are in the richmond and the mission. they started 10

years ago by jamesy alexander and derek song. park life is not just a store or gallery, but it bricks a lot of life and color and creativity to the whole district and city. until their recent expansion with the gallery in the mission district, park life hosted all most 100 exhibits along [inaudible] shocasing the contemporary artist in the world. wrun of my favorite squz i use it for my profile pictures i have mine hands spreads infront of [inaudible] butterfly amaying mural. there is other stuff. i love the david sh rigly politicians make me sick and other great art and [inaudible] as well. there is no much to say about the local artist brought intoperc life. jamesy and dereks leadership is important in

revitalizing businesses along the corker and richmond district. [inaudible] very close to their store and in front of [inaudible] third and cument a few doors down. they were also central in bringing the farmers market to the district that is exstremly successful every sunday from 9-2 p.m. y. always bump into jamesy with his family there too so he is not only the business owner with derek, but also a part of our community. park life features art and design products called together from all over the world. hard to find limited addition, unique items. i just love to get buried in the books that you have in the front, but the t shirts many of them are in my closet as well and lots of great stuch in there. house weir, jewelry, artist, muttples aoriginal art and so much more. i think yoi are part of the rich mnds district pride your store. i

also want to say you worked with dozens of local art est over the past sick years and artist outside san francisco to produce projects such as book squz [inaudible] t shirts ubfanub and various cool objects. there are publishers och book squz catalogs under their paper museum press they run as well. jamesy alexander studied design and art history and a patron of bay area art fwr 20 years [inaudible] jamesy is a member of headland sener for arts. derek is a history buff, master at trivia and publisher at paper and museum press and they are just wonderful when i drop in on them at park life. derek is also the former manager of jieant robot magazine. that was many years ago. thank

supervisor tang >> thank you president breed. today i'm pleased to recognize our district 4 honoree for small business month [inaudible] if dumeet reand stanley x k come up that would be great. welcome. here with us today is demeet riof [inaudible] who is a rel known and well loved member of the sunset district community joined by father gus, brother bobby and managers at [inaudible] is a san francisco institution.

after immigrating here in 1974 they opened hate rr ash burry produce in 1981. in 1985 [inaudible] this year they are celebrating their 30th an versery. demeet reworked at [inaudible] enjoyed interacting with patron jz neighbors and if you stop by the market today you will see him smiling, talking and laughing with the customers. as a young adult he became fascinated to how the groushry business is changing and expanded to the market from produce to small scale market. they sell their own personal wine label. demeet repartnered with small business to design the wine labeled logo and love how our businesses are working and creating together. demeetry and other merchants worked to transform the cor door into what it is

today. they hosted side walk sales during small business week and developed the ocean beach music and art festival that occurs in october and attended by hundreds of residents and families. last year we shared a booth. [inaudible] helped children at the festival paint them so they can take them home. everyone who shops knows it is a well stocked store with high quality items. the family looked for aungzs to expand and we are excited to announce that they are planning to create a full service narcotic with a butcher shop, deli, cafy and juice bar and produce department on nor ega street in the future. later this year the family will open guss market in the mission district. the market is named after gus, demeetrys father who you can see

>> thank you madam president. colleagues today i am thrilled to be able to honor i recognize a true institution in district 8 and the city, theroxy theater as the district 8 small business of the year. theroxy first opened in 1909. it st. tholdest continually operated in the united states and second oldest sen mu in the world. throughout the history theroxy shocased a array from sen mu from second runoffs holly wood films in the 1940's and 50's to german and russian films. theater gained fame for pemereing films as life and death of [inaudible] eraser head and

john [inaudible] the phantom barren make theroxy a part of the bay area senmatic community. the littleroxyopebed next door in 2003 and theroxy theater became a non property 501 c 3 in 2009. today theroxy facilitates a space for all ages and background to gath rb, connect and learn about the world and one another in a accessible environment through daily film screening, festivals, special events and, presentation and educationm programsism i will also say-the person that has the honor of representing district 8 but as a neighbor who lives close to the theater as someone who has seen many movies at theroxy theater and gotten to know theroxy community how proud i am at theroxy theater
